These supermarkets are making big profits and the government’s are doing nothing about it,it feels like a waste of time voting for any of them.

The gubermint won't do anything because they are taking in too much GST on food. If prices go down, so does their take. The average Joe is subsidizing exports. (the govt. should be doing this not you and me) Wholesale and retail need to be separate. These supermarkets are mobsters....there should be no tax on necessity items. We are one of the ONLY countries that tax food and basic clothing items.

This is the second merger by Foodstuffs after the previous lower/upper north island merger a few years ago. They should not be allowed to have nearly 60% of the grocery market. That is simply anti-competitive.

It’s a beat up story designed to take scrutiny off the previous government
They couldn’t even uncover any issues even when investigations were conducted by the commerce commission

We concur, by creating a single entity who holds all the cards will monopolize the industry that being as if the industry isn't already a parent company ie.. a single company that has a controlling interest in other companies.
The problem is suppliers will be dictate a price, have no negotiation powers (unless an unforeseen short fall ie..flooding etc.. then supply & demand will determine price.) and customers will have no other options but to accept whats been given to them both in price and product items on offer as to what brands are to be sold, therein ideally a conglomerate is formed controlling it's own best interest by marketing it's own brands as cheaper or better etc..
And who can blame them.. it's just good business sense to have your fingers in all the pies & being a goose that lays golden eggs being supermarkets are now a human necessity wherein every town needs at least one store.

Thing is, maybe an economy of 5m simply can't support multiple independent supermarket chains. How does the grocery market look in similar sized markets like Singapore or Denmark?

I stopped depending on supermarkets long ago. Buy bulk, grow and bake my own, and local farmers markets. No processed food, even crackers or sweets. Butchers have better meat. Corn and glucose syrups are in everything and the cause of obesity. Supermarkets be dammed.

You only have to go to the UK and have a look at what they pay for our Kiwi foods to realise just how much we are getting RIPPED OFF. Time for farmers market in every town and city in this country.!!
