I had to live with a husband that told his mom every detail of our lives, let her walk all over me, etc. So happy to get out of that marriage. When my lawyer called to tell me the divorce was finalized I was so happy and he was shocked because most people didn't react how I did. I was so happy to not have to live with mister looney toones anymore.

I would have secretly learned French, then spoke French in front of all of them after an incident.
As a french women, I can only say that the behaviours of this mother-in-law and her son are particularly disrespectful. I have to add another remark : these two arrogant persons are not french but swiss, because of their very hard typical accent. Probably from Geneva.
Good idea, but the older you get the harder it is to learn another language. It takes alot of time as well.
One of my neighbors several years before had the same problem with her husband and his mother. They would speak French in front of her knowing she didn't speak French. My neighbor went to night classes and learned to speak French. She told me you should have seen the looks on their faces when she contradicted what they were saying by replying in French.

I've done part submersion via movies and youtube but still hard.
The mother is inconsequential because that nuisance can be tuned out super quick, it's the husband that is concerning. I know of a woman who’s Polish parents hate her husband so much they let her and their grandchildren stay in their separate condo for virtually free but only if he doesn’t live there. For financial reasons they have agreed and the husband lives with his mom. Some of these parents use their financial means as leverage against their children and it’s really unhealthy.
Do they have a good reason to detest him. A drinkers, or a wife beater maybe ?
I would rather have my freedom and dignity than to have my life ran by a sociopath who’s holding an inheritance over my head. It’s not worth the pain. This man needs to make his own way in life and support his wife. I am retired from the military and former Drill Sgt. My now wife is as civilian as one can get. She mentioned family arguments of everyone ganging up on her. I put an end to it in front of everyone during an argument in my presence. She was right and wanted to defend herself. I got what I wanted; everyone can argue but 1 at a time. She defeated everyone with ease after my Drill Sgt habits kicked in, giving her plenty of breathing room. They don't even remotely think about doing it again in my presence.
Her biggest problem is her husband. No marriage can survive the disloyalty and sabotage against the wife by mom and son. She needs to cut her losses. She's married to a manchild.

My first language is English. My second is Spanish. I hate it when I am around other friends that speak Spanish and they start speaking Spanish in front of those who do not. It’s very rude, and I always have to remind them of that.

Semi-related: My mother and her sisters were born in the USA but grew up speaking Polish. Although my mother would occasionally say that we (her sons) should learn Polish, she never taught us. I suspected later that she didn’t push it because it was too convenient for us to not know what mom and my aunts were saying when they switched to Polish, but between what the conversation had been prior to that and the tone of voice they were using, we might get clues what they were saying. At some point when I was in my early 20s, I finally had enough and told them it was impolite to speak in front of us in another language so we wouldn’t understand what they were talking about.

I went through this same thing but my mother in law is from Austria and speaks German. In their minds, no one is good enough for their son.
My husband and I have been married now for over 25 yrs and this almost ended my marriage. My husband finally cut off his birth family and we are trying to repair all the damage that has been done. Our adult kids also do not have a relationship with his family because they saw through all this and wanted no part of it in their lives.
