It’s crazy how well exposed the colours look underwater for an 8bit camera. Not sure if I prefer the look of the action 5 colours with its white balance sensor it’s a tough one
Absolutely mate! I think they have really done a good job with the color science on the Ace Pro 2 for the use underwater. 👍🏻 And I understand what you're saying. I think that comes down to mainly personal taste.
Have a look at my latest video, a comparison between different action cams including the Ace Pro 2 and the Osmo Action 5 Pro: ua-cam.com/video/RMTrdI9kSW4/v-deo.html
Great video but very frustrating when you own the Insta 360 Ace Pro 1. Used it for about a year now and have got some great footage. Those upgrades sound great.
I totally understand. It's always a little frustrating when new gear comes out that has better specs than the one you just bought only recently. I guess it's just the way it goes.... And just because the AP2 is great, it doesn't mean the Original AP is bad by any means. 😊
Hello! Thanks for the amazing review. I just got my camera for an upcoming trip to the Maldives. Do you use I-log when shooting underwater or is the footage not that great to work with, even with scuba mode active? Follow up question, did you try shooting in purevideo mode? I wonder if the better lowlight performance of purevideo helps even without HDR mode....
Thanks for your feedback and your kind words. Happy to hear you enjoyed the review. I did try to shoot in I-Log, but wouldn't really recommend it. Since the Ace Pro 2 has 8bit color depth only, you don't get as much flexibility in post as with some other cameras offering a 10bit color depth. I would stick to Standard Color Profile. Pure video can really be beneficial, especially as you can now use it with 4K60. You can use it with Active HDR turned off, but I don't really see the reason why you would wanna do this.
Hi there. Regarding your mention that the Osmo Action 5 Pro triggered the deep dive mode at only 8m underwater. We need you to provide the following information so that we can better help you. 1) Original material (the material name starts with DJI) 2) Camera Log 3) Time of failure (year, month, day, hour, minute) Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Please provide an e-mail address where I can send the information to to contact@matthiaslebo.com and I'll be happy to supply whatever information I have. Thanks.
Good to know. Still holding off regarding upgrade. I do think my next camera will be a GoPro again. Especially if there would be a native macro lens option underwater.
Honestly I doubt there will be a native macro lens option for underwater from GoPro. The underwater (scuba diving) market is simply too small and unattractive for them in my opinion.
I usually don't take photos underwater so I don't even have any photos to show you. I might take some on my next dives and share them in another video. 👍🏻
@hazwanwalker2323 you normally don't use ND-filters when filming underwater. Unless you're very very shallow, you will usually fight for more not less light underwater. 😉
Are there accessories for UW use available for this Insta360 camera such as color filters, wet optics (macro and WA lenses) , housings, etc. as is available for the GoPro?
From Insta360 themselves there is only a dive housing available. No wet lenses, filters and such. There are some third party companies like IOA making accessories like wet lenses for the Ace Pro line. But there are by far not so many choices as for the GoPro ecosystem, simply because it's been around for so much longer.
When you compare the Ace Pro 2 VS Gopro 13, can you do some filming with HLG HDR on Gopro13 and upload the video to youtube in HLG HDR Mode, looks like the Gopro 11 & 12 dont have "true HDR" but the Gopro 13 encodes the video to BT2100 thanks
I had two big issues with the previous version. Minimum focus is too long for many small fish situations. Recording selfies is hard with no front facing screen(can’t flip the back one in the case). Still photo quality is poor. Once taken editing the video reel is easier to edit quickly with the GoPro Quik software 😮
The minimum focusing distance has improved a little bit, but that is a problem every action camera has, as they are from a design standpoint not made to capture close up shots. Wide angle is weher they really shine. Having said that though, the Ace Pro 2 has the Clarity Zoom function, which lets you zoom into the image without losing quality (in 4K), so you can record smaller animals better without needing to get physically closer.
Unfortunately it won't. The dimensions are mostly the same, but the Ace Pro 2 has a microphone module that sticks out a little and that won't fit into the old Ace Pro housing. If you decide to get the Ace Pro 2 you'll also need the new dive case.
@@MatthiasLebo that's not true, I have both and just checked and the ace 2 definitely fits in the ace 1 housing. The ace 2 comes with a different microphone cover that you can change to, to use in the housing... but you have to do that for the ace pro 2 housing as well. On my first dive I used the ace pro 2 in the ace pro 1 housing, just to make sure I didn't scratch it yet
@critterhunter I disagree. Even if you take the mic module off the AP2, there are still some attachment points protruding and those are sitting very tightly against the (old) dive case. The new dive case accommodates for those attachment points. So yes, you can physically squeeze it in there and close the case but when you take it repeatedly underwater and specifically to deeper depths I imagine some damage happening to the attachment points for the mic module in the long run. If you want to avoid that, I highly recommend to use the new, dedicated dive case for the AP2. That's by the way also the official recommendation from Insta360.
I'm afraid so, no. It looks like Insta360 is targeting divers who don't want to do heavy post production color corrections/grading with this camera. Which is fair and to be honest, probably the bigger market than us nerds, trying to optimise the sh** out of every camera. 😂🙈🤷🏻♂️
Well, let me put it this way: If you want to do rather heavy color corrections and color grading on your action cam footage, you are definitely better off with 10-bit color depth. The image will, generally speaking, hold together better and won't fall apart quite as quickly. But when we look at it from a realistic, real world standpoint, most action cam users don't want to do much post color correction/grading to their footage, They just want to capture it and more or less instantly share it to their social channels. If the second applies to you, the 8-bit is not going to be a problem.
No. No red filter used on any of the Ace Pro 2 shots. Most were straight out of camera and on some I adjusted the exposure a little bit (corrected the midtowns down because they were to bright for my liking). 😊
@ purévideo of course. Phone changed it. Nope it’s not it’s to 30 fps. When you change to 60 it tells you it’s not supported. And I have the latest update. You have to update the camera when you get it. What firmware do you have
Well, the sponsored part gave me early access to the camera so I was even able to test it and create this review before the official launch. The opinions mentioned in the video are all my own ones, solely based on my first-hand experience with the Ace Pro 2.

wider field of view might be a problem with a standard flat port underwater housing
It's actually not with their new Underwater Mode. It helps a lot with distortion underwater, correcting the image to a very natural look.
Not with underwater mode
