  • Elisabeth (Sisi) (Sissi) was born into the royal Bavarian house of Wittelsbach. She enjoyed an informal upbringing before marrying Emperor Franz Joseph I at the age of sixteen. The marriage thrust her into the much more formal Habsburg court life, for which she was unprepared and which she found uncongenial. Early in the marriage she was at odds with her mother-in-law, Archduchess Sophie, who took over the rearing of Elisabeth's daughters, one of whom, Sophie, died in infancy. The birth of a male heir, Rudolf, improved her standing at court, but her health suffered under the strain, and she would often visit Hungary for its more relaxed environment. She came to develop a deep kinship with Hungary, and helped to bring about the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary in 1867.

You obviously did a lot of research on Sisi and I thank you for it. A well done video although if it had narration, one did not need to sit through more than 1 hour 20 mins of it. Thank you for adding the list of books and films on Sisi. I loved the 2009 German Italian production called Principesa Sisi. It's available on UA-cam with English subtitles! It's lusciously shot and the actors really did a fantastic job. It's a romantic fantasy (Franz Joseph and Sisi are shown to be very romantically in love although in real life Sisi was less enamoured with her husband) with actual historical stuff thrown in. It also has one of the most nuanced portrayals of Archduchess Sophie, Sisi's MIL who is almost always portrayed as quite the heartless villain. I actually liked this mini series better than the 1955 Sisi. I strongly urge you all to have a look at this mini series.

Thank you for providing all this rich history. Many a sitting she sat. My family Nickname is SISI too. Some people’s I meet think it’s Sissy. My older brother called me SISI because he couldn’t say Alison Anne. So happy I found this. Her waist may be a 10-12. Dear girl.

I don't think shw was a simple to read as all that. Women back then were treated much differently. I do think she loved her children. If you see the video she is very attached as much as they will allow and wore black after Prince Rudolf's death. It's hard to really get a good read on someone who lived in a different era with "queen" responsiblilities. The nobility lived so much differently that the average Austrian housewife. Sisi is more complicated than any documentary can reveal.

She was forced to marry him when he was suppose to marry her sister, & he did nothing to stop his mother from taking Sisi's kids from her he was a momma's boy. Sisi started having health problems when she married into his family that's why she didn't love her husband put yourself in her shoes. Had she not married Franz she would've married someone she loved & lived a healthy life I wouldn't love a man that I was forced to marry.

Look at the regimes & routines she did to keep herself looking good in pictures in her later years she still looked very youthful while her husband looked like the old man that he is. Sisi was not going to let child bearing, a wicked mother in law, unhappiness in the courts & her marriage keep her from looking her best.

The saying in 28:58 is very true kids wreck havoc on the female body as well as the appearance of a woman no wonder so many women now don't want kids. I feel bad for Elizabeth she was forced to marry a man because the clothing she wore made her stand out from her sister who was to marry Franz bu even if he married Helene he would've taken a page out of Henry the 8th's book & found a way to divorce Helene to get to Sisi. The moment she married him Sisi had been plagued with health problems obviously marrying into the Austrian family was a curse I would've flat out refused to marry him "Hell no you're marrying my sister not me." His mother should've forced him to marry Helene if he still refused his ass would've been kicked out of line for the throne & given to someone else. Plus this is one empress that took great care & pride in how she looked her regimens obviously worked for her because she looks great in all the portraits she posed for. Sisi really knew how to take care of herself.

Romy Schneider was magnificent in portraying Sissi, only she was nothing like her neither in physical appearance or character. I never noticed a true smile in Sissi but there were many smiles with Romy Schneider, or perhaps in those days it was not used to smile when taking photographs mainly portrays. This is the problem with films, they pick some true facts and then make up their own story, just like making a new door from an old door, but the trilogy of Sissi with Romy Schneider are very good and this is what entertainment is all about

very interesting: Sisi was crazy; perhaps due to inbreeding in the family and perhaps a venereal disease by her imperial husband?

Yeah sure blame EVERYTHING on the "inbreeding"

@@monabohamad2242 Indeed, like she had a say in anything she was able to obtain control in somethings but everything else she couldn't. Royals called themselves trying to keep everything within the family that included marriages which is never a good thing.

Elisabeth was a self centered, selfish woman, completely obsessed with herself and her appearance, without the slightest understanding of duty and responsibility. Considering that, it is hard to blame her mother in law as, giving the circumstances, it was probably very difficult to see Elisabeth as a caring and responsible mother.
Taking her young children on such a long trip to Hungary just to defy her mother In law was extremely risky and yes, Elisabeth, at least indirectly, caused little Sophia's death.
She wanted everything and gave nothing back neither to her husband, her children nor to her country. She was a bad wife, a bad mother, and a bad Empress.

Hey, she never wanted to marry Franz so she had every right to act the way she did her mother in law basically took her kids from her Sisi told her husband to put a stop to it but did he do anything? Hell no" Mother knows best" in his eyes another reason why Sisi resented her husband he was a coward & a pussy. She did gave back to not only her home country but her adopted country as well she had some traits of Catherine the great Sis learned different languages her new home country loved her. She was basically Catherine the Great & Princess Diana rolled into one as for her appearance? What's wrong with a woman wanting to take care of how she looks men want hot wives not ugly wives. In pictures she looks young, vibrant, youthful & in later years she still looks young in contrast to her husband who looks like an old man. She had a reason as to not want to be bothered with her husband & kids she never wanted them again she was forced into marrying him & forced to bear children she hated being with her husband so much she did everything she could to keep from having to sleep with him. The moment she married him & had to live in another country she developed health problems. Her mother in law was a witch she tried to control every aspect of Sissi's life until Sisi said "Enough!" good thing her mother in law died. As for her duties she hated them she found the courts stifling & boring she wanted freedom & independence if I were in her shoes I would do everything I can to escape too. Elisabeth was a 21st century girl trapped in a 19th century world had she been born in our time she would be a very successful business woman.

How could she be a parasite when she was forced into a life she didn't want? She never wanted to marry Franz he was suppose to marry her sister but he wanted Sisi so he acted like a spoiled brat until he got what he wanted. Sis wanted to be free & live life on her terms but she was denied that so out of defiance she refused to be intimate with her husband even after she had to bear him children. She took rides on horses, traveled the world, had little to do with her husband & their kids, she did things that Princess Diana had done she hated the courts & especially her wicked mother in law. It gets under my skin that only male heirs can inheritate the throne so much stress & pressure on women to bear sons women don't have control over what sex their child is. If it's a girl the woman & daughter get shunned women are forced to have kids until they produce a boy women's bodies can only take so much no wonder so many women back then died of child birth. Sisi is not spoiled & selfish she was born in the wrong place at the wrong time can you blame her for not wanting anything to do with a man she was forced to be with? She even told him to have an affair so he wouldn't be lonely while she was away. No doubt she told him "I don't love you & I never will you should've married my sister instead I was forced to be with you." I'm sure Franz was hurt but he had to accept it so I really don't feel any sympathy for Franz whatsoever he could've just let her go. Sisi did the best she could while taking good care of herself she was finally released from her personal hell when she was fatally stabbed at last she was free.
