7:21 I love the background of Wet Dry World. When I blasted off in the cannon, I was always hoping that I'd fly beyond the level and be able to explore the ancient city.
finally, somebody who knows how i feel. theres always something about 2D skyboxes that annoy me and its the fact that the backgrounds could look awesome yet it would be physically impossible to reach it :l
I've used to have recurring dreams about this level. The only difference was that it was just a foggy like atmosphere with mirrors all around the music would be in the background
This is one of my favorite levels just for the atmosphere. A ruined city with a ghost town that shows that Bowser has potentially murdered the citizens of the town. Goes to show that 64 is one of the darkest Mario games.
This game had darker levels. One level I remember is literally hell. The Bullies are basically demons, the entire stage is filled to the brim with lava and fire, the portrait leading to the level is a cackling flame with a demonic face, and they sky is a fire red. The Arabian styled synth music that played throughout the level did not help matters. It sounded both melancholic and creepy. The following level which is actually a desert and uses the same creepy theme really makes you feel isolated. Like you are in a harsh sandy wasteland far from civilization. Oh and it has the classic Tox Box design which I found to be more menacing then their redesigns in the Galaxy games. Other notable stages that had dark elements was the haunted bay level with the Mawray in it, the ghost house level with the Mad Piano and the Bookends, and that creepy dark mine level with the poison gas. Heck this game takes the typical grass land level trope Mario is known for and turns it on the head by making said grass land into a warzone between the friendly Bob-omb Buddies and Bowser's Bob-omb forces. I think what they were going for was that these worlds were Bowser's worlds. As such they are outright hostile and have little to no allies inside them.
@@warioland523The ghost house is the least scary level for me besides the piano lmao.I actually find this entire game to be kinda creepy, just the way the models look and the constant lack of enemies,it feels weird and surreal.Which is why i love this game.
Wet Dry World as well as Rainbow Cruise from a design perspective are some of the most visually ugly levels in the game since they're less levels and more beta test rumors the developers just decided to call "levels" and this had to do with the fact how Miyamoto cut the development time for this game and the game was already maximizing its storage space so it couldn't do half the shit it wanted to do that it ended up doing in Super Mario 64 DS
After reading a bunch of interviews I know the game was rushed, at least one developer remarked that sometimes he felt they were mashing random stuff together to create levels.
Honestly, for trips to the town, it's way easier to just jump the water level all the way up when entering through the painting. Then it's just a matter of jumping into the cage, no need to bother with the cannon.
This stage always reminds me of the “Oh hi, Mark” scene in The Room because the city painting that has been manually edited into the space above the top of the walls looks almost exactly like the background green-screen in that scene.
Wonderful playthrough of the Wet Dry World level of Super Mario 64! You did it in an excellent way. And I totally enjoy watching this video. Please create even more of those phenomenal walkthrough videos! ❤🧡💛💙❤🧡💛💙❤🧡💛💙❤🧡💛💙
Have you ever wondered what it would be like in a water level where you can control how deep or how shallow the water gets? Wonder no more, you're in Wet Dry World, where depending on the challenge, you'll need it to either be wet or dry. From going to the Top O' The Town or visiting the underwater city, let's just hope you know what you're doing.
This was a very interesting level being able to raise and lower the water at will. The underwater city was always strange to me though what was the story behind that? Did Bowser kill all of those people or were they able to flee in time. I would have liked to know more.
It could be a OoT reference that didn't end up panning out as the town it is based on it got cut from that Zelda game. It sort of resembles the buildings from prototype screenshots of that game, both were being made around the same time period IIRC. Such is one theory that's been around for a while, and no it's not part of the fake creepypasta junk currently floating around.
I always got to the "Downtown" area by having the water at it's highest point (by jumping in the painting at the top) which is high enough for you to simply jump on to the fence and climb over as shown at 9:50 because screw the cannon.
For anyone who is wondering what city they used for the background of Wet Dry World, and I bet someone in a past comment said this! As you look at 7:23, its a altered image of Casares, Spain!! In the 23 years I have played this classic, I never ever knew this!
@@bigsmoke9691 Hi big smoke, after two years since I posted this comment I think your right it is in Shibam Yemen! For some silly reason however I still believe its Casares!
For "the shocking arrow lifts" I raised the water one more level swam over to the box and jumped on top to break it. So I guess there are three ways to get the same star.
This place stresses me out. I've almost finished the game, but this place is just so annoying that I can only get like half of the stars. Not to mention Wiggler's Red Coins! Still a fun and cool game though. Love Big Boo's Haunt, Hazy Maze Cave, and Tall, Tall Mountain.
I remember this place so much, I even do not feel comfortable about I was seeing myself standing on the cube in the up then I flew without wings then I saw myself swinging to that weird city
When I first jump into the level I don't get dropped that down, the platform as well as the level of the water is a bit higher and I can't walk down there

Honesty same ... not entirely sure why it did though, out of all the levels this one stayed with me for so many years etched into my brain. Spooky af
Am I the only one who used to get mad that you couldn't go inside those buildings in the underwater town?
No, you were not the only one, I always wanted to do it, the interior design of the building must be very beautiful.🥹
I wonder why the image of Casares, Spain was used for the background for this.
Look at the blue sky and you'll see a city underneath it.
It adds a weird, desolate vibe. I love it.

Well Mario 64 was only made by 15 people, what do you expect. It is already very good, scoring more than 90 points in a review.

Honestly, for trips to the town, it's way easier to just jump the water level all the way up when entering through the painting. Then it's just a matter of jumping into the cage, no need to bother with the cannon.
