Also, somebody who reads an amount of like 85 books a year can not, never ever, get in the right mood for every book, grasp its finer details and potentially learn a profound lesson. So, the whole reason one should actually read books is lost. Fast food media consumption should be reserved for TV programmes and movies. Books and video games (the right ones) should stick with you 60+ hours and potentially far beyond that.
I really appreciate your approach to booktube, it's not the usual way of things and that's refreshing. Watching your videos is more like talking to another reader, rather than just watching a youtuber talk.
Brandon will always be top tier. Mistborn was a bit dark and gory for me but gosh the characters are pure gold. I really love his concept of the cosmere and how all these planets intersect. I'm currently on book 6 of mistborn and it's just so dang good
I have tried numerous times with Sanderson and, while I acknowledge he has talents..... I would never ever put him up with many of the authors on this list.
Mike, thanks for mentioning Dead Boy's Game and The Broken Vow in your video. I really appreciate your support and generosity for spreading the word. Hope you can fit the prequel in your schedule later this year. Best wishes!
I also read the Foundation series this year, and I agree that book 2 is the best out of the Original Trilogy. I personally really enjoyed Foundation's Edge & Foundation and Earth probably the most in the series as a whole for its continuous storyline and character development. Though I think I loved his Robots Series the most out of all of his books that I read. If you haven't read them yet, I can't recommend them enough. Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun, Robots of Dawn, and Robots and Empire. They're all phenomenal
Thank you for the tip! I Other than the Foundation trilogy, the only other Isaac Asimov book I have read was I, Robot in college. I remember really enjoying it. Definitely want to check out his Robot series!
I recommend reading the Robot / Foundation / Empire in order of publication. Make sure to check out Pebble in the Sky, Asimov's first novel; it's well worth reading. Above all else, make sure to read the robot novels before continuing with the Foundation books. I also agree with An Unknown Burrito about Foundation's Edge & Foundation and Earth being better books but from what I've been told we are in the minority.
+1 for The Time Machine! Especially the last two chapters resonated profoundly with me. The sheer existential dread serves as a nice contrast to what came before and really puts the framework story in perspective. It still stays with me. What a book!
I read the Mistborn trilogy last year and the Foundation trilogy back in January. I'm also reading through the Wheel of Time (1 every 4 months) and will next read The Shadow Rising in August. I'm currently reading the first few Star Wars High Republic books.
Stormlight is "better" than Wheel of time and A song of Ice and Fire??? Very subjective opinion. Personally, I think certainly not. He has talents obviously, but, I would not put him ever up with Martin and perhaps Jordan. Though personally of the two, I think Jordan I find less appealing, but Ive read some of his books. Martin is violent, but I think he's closer to Tolkien and other fantasists I like best. I read Martin's sci fi before song of ice and fire was popular, he had a science fiction universe he was going to write an epic in Avalon, and while he's dark and horror influenced, I certainly like his sci fi, and found he seemed inspired by Frank Herbert, perhaps my favourite sci fi writer, and also Wells who I often compare. Check out Sandkings specifically, but he has several other science fiction books.
@@devinreese1397 We have totally opposite taste when it comes to fantasy. Sanderson is The most awesome author for me and there is a good reason Stormlight is rank 1 on reedit as The Best Fantasy series and also Words of Radiance, his Best book is rated The highest Fantasy Book on Goodreads, its that good.Sandkings is pretty good, ive read IT three Times but Not even close to Stormlight Archive. 🙏 Herbert is great but again im not enjoying him as much as Sanderson, for sure. 😁
In my teenage years(most productive about the reading) I used to read 30 books a year max. Now with the master degree It has dropped 7-10. So your number made me tbh😃I actually listened that part again if it is 17 or 70😂
After playing the amazing videogame Pentiment over the holidays, I was on the lookout for a medieval historical fantasy/fiction book. My mother recommended me The Mists of Avalon, because she really liked that book when she read it back in the 80s. However, when I looked at the Wikipedia page about the author, I read that the author has been accused of child sexual abuse by her own daughter. That zapped any interest I had in reading the book out of me. I would be interested to hear your opinion on this, Mike. Did you know about that while reading the book? If yes, did it change your perception of the book or were you able to seperate the book from the author?
I found out after I had finished reading it. But since I already wasn't much of a fan of the book it didn't impact my opinion. I always try to separate the artist from the art. It can be hard sometimes though
Me and my dad are reading through the Wheel of Time right now. We’re currently on Eye of the World, and I like it so far. I’d really like to finish Mistborn Era 1 this year. I read The Final Empire & The Well of Ascension in November and December. I also need to finish The Inheritance Cycle. I’m on the last book, but the last two were really boring to me, so I’m having trouble getting motivated to read that. The other day I picked up Red Rising at Books-A-Million and I’m blown away with how good it is. I would also like to re-read Harry Potter this year (this will be like my 10th time reading it over the past couple years, but you can’t read it too many times…can you?). I also picked up Assassin’s Apprentice and Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb and I really want to read those this year. I’ve got a lot of plans and hopefully I’ll be able to read them all. I would also like to read Stormlight Archive and The Dark Tower, but I’ll have to wait and see with those.
That is awesome! You have some really good series there, and series that I still need to tackle at some point I really need to reread Harry Potter again too. I read it when it first came out, but never finished the series. I was on the second to last book when the end was spoiled for me. And after it was spoiled I just never finished it. Now it's been so long I need to probably just read the whole series again.
@@miketravelsnowhere6557 Yeah, Harry Potter is really great. The first time I read it, it got me so excited to read, and I loved it so much that I re-read it 7 times in one year (I think it was in 2020).
I had the same reaction to foundation. I really liked the start and setting of foundation but the rest of the book I was bored out of my mind I didnt expect it to change like it did.
If you loved the Time Machine, check out the sequel by Stephan Baxter, The Time Ships. It continues right after the end of the first book, keeping the same tone but turning up the story to 11.
My man Mike 👌🏼👌🏼 Great to just see your video pop up on my feed I love genuine book tubers 💯🎃🤪 I totally agree with mistborn I really didn’t like it it and didn’t feel like the time invested was worth I am totally picking up the foundation series
I can only read two books at the same time if they are very different from each other. As in completely different genres. I can't read two science fiction books at the same time for example. Actually, right now I am reading Warbreaker (fantasy) and A Study in Scarlet (Sherlock Holmes).
We had to read the catcher in the rye in English class. I do not think I ever read a book I hated more. Holden didn't feel relatable at all, just very annoying. My teacher loved that book though. And while I still think very highly of him, that was shocking. Also, I read I robot this year, all the short stories endings felt quite like a deus ex Machina, so I don't think I will read other books by Asimov.
Catcher in the Rye was required reading in high school for me, but I think I just used spark notes or something (I really wasn't into reading back then). I remember really not caring about it then. I am glad I finished reading it this past year though. Even if I wasn't really a fan. I've read I, Robot as well a while ago. I thought it was a fine book, but does not hold a candle to his Foundation series!
Well, I guess I'll have to give foundation a chance sometime. By the way, I'm glad you liked the Silmarillion, it's my favourite book and I am really tired of people claiming it to be borderline unreadable.
Honestly, its really sad... His first experiance with the Mistborn world is ruined because he had too high expectations. I hope he'll read the other books in the series, if only the first trilogy. Hopefully--he'll be able to forget about expectations and just read, if he goes onto reading "The Well of Ascension" But the end Ruined it for me...
I definitely plan on reading more Brandon Sanderson in the coming year! I plan on reading the next books in the Mistborn series, but not sure when I will get around to it. I have heard the series improves with the later books. I also want to check out his Stormlight Archives series. Since that is considered his magnum opus
So nice to see a booktuber not pull out a list of 85 books that they read this year. Finally a relatable book reader.
Thank you!
Agreed I read about 16 books of 2022 which is more realistic for most people
