They are similar in size. However, Mordax feels much larger in hand. I prefer the blade shapes of Malibu but what has ruined all flippers for me is the flipper action of the malibu. I have not found a better action and for this reason the malibu has been my edc since it came out. I have tried to carry others but I always go back to malibu after a few days.
Hahaha I thoroughly enjoyed watching parts sling across the camera! All jokes aside, glad to see the knife is treating you well! Thanks for the deep dive!!!
Nick,do you belive there is good knife about 20€ ? I found one. Sandvik steel and steel frame lock with bone scales. Yes,it isn't greatest knife, but for price,it is excellent.
I saw your old review on ceramic bearings. In this vid you see the most critical component. The hardened steel washer between the bearing and the liners, or scales. If the bearings are running on a soft steel or titanium surface, it's comparable to driving on mud versus concrete. If the only moving parts are the blade and bearings, ceramic works dry, just blow it out with canned air occasionally and you're good to go. Long time viewer, love your channel👍
Thanks! Just got a Malibu about a week ago and so far I'm really digging it. Was looking to put some ceramic (Skiff) bearings in it But I've never taken a protect or a button lock apart so I didn't want any surprises. Very simple, thanks. And I love how very simple and solid the build is on this thing. Just two solid slabs, a button and a spring. I see why they might go with aluminum - light enough to make two solid slabs without being unwieldy, strong enough to keep the integrity of the handle.
There also wasn't a whole lot to mess up - I had to fiddle a little with the pivot-stop-button to get it working correctly but there was little margin for error in that it appeared to just work or just not work. Action is pretty close to the same but I might have put it together a tiny bit tighter, so I'll see how it feels after a couple hundred flips and redo the screws if it doesn't seem happy. It was beautifully smooth and fast but not quite together enough and I didn't use loctite which I guess I will on the frame screws eventually. PIvot I'm still getting the feel for. I didn't see any loctite on these screws, just a little blackened grease/oil from the factory. It was pretty clean and simple overall. Will see if you have disassembly vids for knives to use my other 3 bearing pairs in, heh
Someone on reddit' s Knife Swap remembered I had called 2nds on a Malibu & offered to sell it to me today. Of course I said yes! I can't wait to try it out! 😃
Irked Particle, r/knife_swap has been a blessing and curse for me, can’t buy anything from dealers anymore because of all the great prices you can get there, plus I find myself refreshing the swap every five minutes, if I don’t my hands start shaking 😂
A little pissed about this one. Managed to snag one of the pricier titanium-handled versions of these after so much patience, waiting, and monitoring of my BHQ wishlist. Plus there's the $400 price of admission. And, I got sent a knife with an off-centered blade caused by a bent frame on the clip side. Adjusting pivot made no difference, so I took it apart. I knew something was off straight away when I was taking the bottom screws off, and the frame was pulling itself apart when the pivot was still tight. When I check it against a straight edge, it's bent. Never owned a Pro-Tech before, and I'm already loathing to deal with their warranty service on my first sampling of their products if this is what they think is acceptable to send out on an item in limited production.
I bought the Tekton Everybit Tech Rescue kit, thinking I'd save some money in the long run. Anyway, so yeah, now I have that Tekton kit as well as the iFixit drivers, and the Wiha bits... :)
Should the installation of the second ball bearings ring have been orientated the other way? (facing down towards the blade surface) The first ring of bearings was positioned upright (toward the blade). Just curious.
Nick, Thanks for disassembly of the knife, knowing that it can be serviced is very important. Most knives eventually need to be worked on to keep the action tip top. Great Video Thanks again. : )
I have the liquid both the permanent and semi permanent and doesn’t work great on really small screws, which is a good thing. Just works enough to put a little friction on the screw with out glueing it on
Also, that spring popping up and the surprised expressed on through the movement of your hands was priceless comedy. Good reflex control to avoid cutting your hand too.
Oh yeah, I mean, bearings in a knife don't have to support a load. Here's an example people will hate, it's the same deal with hand spinners. Now the bearings in a skateboard have to hold up to your weight while moving so you gotta have lubricant... Dry or lubed, with bearings in a knife it doesn't matter...
Hey Nick! I’m excited to see the full review after some carry! Have a wonderful day!
Talon Sei just received a Malibu from Protech. He opened it and showed it in his mail time video today. Another great video Nick.
I saw a post on Instagram about some titanium malibus. Very excited for this one.
This looks like a good alternative for those of us that found the Mordax to be a bit too large.
Mordax looks better though. Hope they will make more manual button lock knives
th3smsyt ...me too.

I actually laughed out loud when the screw pulled the but out of the driver handle.
Nick: I prefer the lubricated feel
Me: Phrasing!
Has protech failed at anything. They just seem to do everything right.
The Cambria has bearings. The Mordax, which is more of a Ferrum Forge than a ProTech, does too.
Hahaha I thoroughly enjoyed watching parts sling across the camera! All jokes aside, glad to see the knife is treating you well! Thanks for the deep dive!!!
Nick: the spring is not going to yeet across the room
*2 secs later*
Spring: YEEET!!!
All things in moderation, especially if you're a moderator. This alone made me subscribe 😂
I never cut down on lubrication. Cars, food, knives and tools and uhh women but I digress.
"Burned by Murphy's Law".... story of my life...

There are several. Especially for a daily beater EDC!

Really like the dropxferrumforgexprotech collab and this looks just as good!

Did you end up going with Skiff, and if so, is it worth the $ and time?

I just wish one time I'd see a pro tech I really like it would actually be in stock some where
I've been waiting two weeks for this to come out haha

Spyderco Smock!!! Great video Nick

Apparently, there's a difference between cpm154 and 154cm, I didn't know this until now. I had to look because my protech has 154cm
lol same thing happened to me
I’m watching while flipping my own custom zt0393glcf with micarta scales and hinderer hardware. Flicking awesome! Lol
Should the installation of the second ball bearings ring have been orientated the other way? (facing down towards the blade surface) The first ring of bearings was positioned upright (toward the blade). Just curious.
nice grand seiko :-)
Does anybody know/confirm if protech uses stainless steel on their springs?
They actually usually use 154CM, not CPM-154. Ferum Forge talked them into doing 20CV for the Mordax.
Nick, Thanks for disassembly of the knife, knowing that it can be serviced is very important. Most knives eventually need to be worked on to keep the action tip top. Great Video Thanks again. : )
Out of stock unfortunately - looks good, opens smoothly...
I waited like a few hours and they were all gone .. shoulda pulled the trigger
@@justinhensley6465 theres one for sale on ebay they sold out so fast .
I think this will be my first knife above 100 dollars I'm extremely into this knife and I've heard so much good.
We need a head to head style video. Spyderco Smock vs Protech Malibu
Dude!!! Was that the spring drive GMT Seiko??
The Cambria or Mordax may have bearings? Not sure
Nicholas... it’s button, blade then pivot.
Not 27 miles of beauty but 3.5 inches of sweetness.
The bit got stuck because the screw got stripped a tiny bit so the hex bit twisted.
The laugh of pure joy at feeling the action is what sold me on it.
The best way to hear God laugh is to announce your plans.
Nik where the links for your tools thread lock and knife?
Such a pretty knife. Shame everything is illegal in the UK hah
That moment that Nick Shabazz says “yeet”.
I've had mine for a week now. And I adore it.
No one cares. Lol jk
Looking forward to the full Nick review. Great looking knife.
Is the pivot captive or free-spinning?
Been a while since i watched the whole disassembly video . I like the new format .
I have one abs it's awesome. Love the vids Nick.
Your disassemble videos are second to none...
What size hex key were those nick? I know they were tiny but idk what size to buy
My Protech uses#6 torxbit
Love mine. IMHO it's a GEM!
Sell me that when your done?
It’s a beautiful thing
The mordax has bearings...
Protech had been impressing me.
Yeah boring handle.
Sweet grand seiko!
Hey everybody, Nick here
Nice disassembly !👍
my "thread lock on a stick" must be defective cause it doesnt seem to do much of anything
I felt the same way about mine, are you still on that top waxy layer of the stick? Once I dabbed past that layer it works like a charm.
I have the liquid both the permanent and semi permanent and doesn’t work great on really small screws, which is a good thing. Just works enough to put a little friction on the screw with out glueing it on

Did you give the price of this one Nick? You know, perhaps the most important thing to discuss about a knife?
I like the part where you yeet the spring across the room🤣🤣🤣
0:26 if you tierd of taking knives apart just end your channel...
So are you still carrying this or did protech become unhappy when they saw you disassemble it
They sent it to me. They know what they were getting into 🤣
Nick Shabazz hehe got me there
