Meanwhile Horner gave the world the infamous Tyrannosaurus scavenger hypothesis, the idea that Triceratops and Torosaurus are synonymous, a Chickenosaurus Project which results are doubtful and experiments potentially being animal cruelty, and recently made dinosaur NFTs using art from another artist. Oh and did I mention that he married a 19 year old student of his when he was 65? But hey he's honest, did a lot of essential research during the 80's and named a few dinosaurs such as Maiasaura and Achelousaurus. I'll give him that.
Absolutely inspiring. Everyone knows how a Straight-A student ends up as a successful researcher. But that makes it hard to aspire to if you aren't that kind of student. This is a show of having true passion for your field, and caring about what you love to do. Obviously doing well in classes makes things easier, but if you love a subject you can always find a way to make it your life.
+Fencer Dave If the education system could not recognize a great mind like his, it fails to perform its function. Keep in mind he is not alone even people like Einstein, Darwin, Winston Churchill, Richard Brandson were not recognized with their purpose they exist in many fields. The education system is broken form my perspective.
+Sebanoe: It's actually a myth that Einstein was bad in school. The only class he failed was French, and in Maths and Physics he was a straight A student. Apparently, it's a misunderstanding because he went to school in Switzerland where the highest grade is a 6, whereas in Germany it's the lowest (don't know if that's the reason for the myth or not but it's one explanation). I just had to remark that because you always hear it as an inspirational story and it's just not true. But what you're saying is indubitably right, in most every country I think. You can get through high school (and to a certain degree through university) by simply memorizing everything you need to know without understanding or liking the subject at all, while other people who are interested but lack some other qualities flunk out . And that's why I've stopped looking at a person's education to judge their mental capability.
Sebanoe Einstein got a phd in physics from a highly reputable school in switzerland. Darwin transferred from the best medical school in the UK to the University of Cambridge (the best university in the UK) Its like people think somehow claiming Einstein was just a patent clerk will somehow make them at einsteins level or something.
Sebanoe this is a story about how the education system did recognize a mind like this. He got admitted to college with a D- avg, had a 0.06 gpa in college and still became a professor
This was probably one of the best conversations between two experts (Jack and Jessi) that I have ever seen. There wasn't any form of egotism or passive aggressive behavior. And I feel like Hank was just hanging out on the other couch with his mind completely blown. A++++ for a great SciShow Talk Show!
+Jamie M Agreed! The discussion between Jessi Castañeda and professor Horner was one of the best things that has ever happened to the Internet. I wish we could hear more of it. (Because there's no way they stopped talking just because the filming was over.)
I love that she brought on an animal where he could contribute by discussing its evolution. Usually, once Jessie comes out, she's the one with all the information. As far as I remember, this is the only case other than when Emily Grasly comes on where she and the guest both are contributing a lot of information, and they are knowledgable about vastly different aspects of Hera, one about her behavior and physical traits, the other about her evolution and the origin of those traits.
honestly this is so motivational because even though he had really low grades, doesn't mean he didn't get back up and yknow, hank green called him legendary, and that itself is a great thing
I can't even imagine the level of determination & passion this man had & how fortunate he was to find an equally determined advisor. There are so many kids today stuck in the no child left behind, underfunded, understaffed education system that could benefit from his story!
I totally was up one night wondering if it was possible to reverse evolve turkeys or something into dinosaurs. With very little understanding of exactly how, nice to know someone with that kind of understanding basically had the same thought.
+Shauna Blake Some genes just got deactivated, and they can just modify the regulator genes to turn them back on. Others got changed and need to be edited directly to change them back. And still others actually have been lost completely, like the enamel gene, and so those have to either be taken from another species or synthesized artificially. So, yeah, it's a thing people are trying to do, but it's going to take a *lot* of effort and research to get it done.
Thomas Mishler IceMetalPunk That makes sense that it would be so much more complicated than I expected, I thought just selective breeding would be enough. Sounds interesting, I'm putting it on my to research list for after my exams are done.
+IceMetalPunk another big barrier, is that hatching them is a little bit extremely illegal (because apparently its somehow crueler than the poultry industry. No! No it is not! Let me have my pet chickenosaurus!), so we don't know what effects making these changes might have in the long term. We know we can give a chicken embryo a snout, but we dont know how it will effect the chicken's life, and what other genes it might need turned on/off in order for it to operate properly
Shauna Blake Selective breeding *may* work, but it'll take thousands or millions of years at least to selectively breed a bird back into its ancient form. Genetic engineering techniques are the only way to do it on a practical timescale.
Magmafrost13 Meh. I've never been the type to worry about things like that. We eat these animals all the time; how is that less cruel than giving one a disease? I'd rather be diseased than eaten, personally.
How great to see the legendary (yes, he is) Jack Horner on SciShow. I've been in awe of him since the 1990s when I was a geology student. With apologies to him, I thought he'd be kind of grumpy; but he's so down to earth and accommodating! I'm so grateful to the professor who saw his potential. What a gift to the scientific world.
Jack Horner gave a speech at my son's school (Rochester School for the Deaf) a few years back and he was fantastic. I still have the picture from the local newspaper of he and my son playing together.
This is my favorite episode of SciShow Talk Show now. I learned more about dinosaurs and their evolution into birds in 30 minutes than I have in years! This Mr. Horner is pretty great! And so are hawks!

We raised chickens when I was a kid. For the longest time, I didn't think that a standard domestic chicken could fly. Throw a chicken up in the air and it will flap its wings and pretty much come straight down. It doesn't hurt the bird because the wings keep it from coming down too fast. Fast forward a few decades, and we were showing our kids the joys of raising livestock. Watching Paul fry and eat the very first egg to come out of his chicken something to remember. Anyhow, our chickens decided to eschew the roosts that we made for them and fly up into the trees -- perhaps twenty feet up. I wasn't surprised that the lightweight leghorns could do it, but the heavier dual-purpose (meat and egg) birds also flew. At the time, we had Leghorn, Americauna, Isa Brown, Barred Rock, White Rock, and Rhode Island Red birds, along with mixtures. They all flew. One winter when I was blowing the snow, an Americauna mix flew past me on a straight and level flight. That's the only time I ever saw that happen. My guess is that flying for them is like running all out for us. It's too strenuous to do for more than a short burst. Chickens and other fowl might represent some of the earlier flight in birds -- useful for jumping from high places, getting up into higher and safer places, and short bursts of speed to escape predators.
