    Arromanches brings back old memories the first time I heard it played was at a Lord Mayors Show in 1964 and we were standing in Poultry on a very cold November day and the procession was held up and the Central Band of The Royal Air Force played it from start to finish and all of the spectators both sides of the street stood in silence until the end and we all cheered and clapped with great exuberance, at such close quarters you not only hear the band but you feel it as well in your chest region👍

      Looks like it was the Bandmaster who chose the marches as he was the one marching within the band, baton swinging.

    Oh how much I love the RAF Band!! Like the Band of the Household Cavalry, they don't drown out the other Musicians with an overly loud Bass Drum. What a pity the Arch at Victoria Barracks is still closed off, they would have sounded Awesome coming through that. they sounded great anyway, you could hear all the Instruments & they were so beautifully Balanced. Their arrangements of some Favourite Marches were Brilliant, that has to be the best version of "Trafalgar" I've ever heard & a favourite of mine "Glorious Victory" was excellent. I like the way they have the Band formed too, Mixing the Trombones, Euphoniums, Eb Tubas & Saxophones together like that meant that there was no loud & soft volume change as Instruments "rested" during a piece, the sound was rich & full as you pass each rank, even when the Trombones rested during "Old Comrades". Superb!!
    A most Excellent Video MBE. Audio & Visuals Brilliant as Always. Thank you!

      Hi Vicky. As your former "instrument recognition" tutor I award you "12 out of 10"! 10 points for passing the instrument recognition course "With Distinction", a bonus point for the appreciation of the effects of the different positioning/layout of the instruments relative to each other, and another bonus point for the retentive memory. I hope that the sound at 06:24 provides some consolation for the hopefully temporary non-availability of the arch at Victoria Barracks. You can hear your "favourite" instrument very well there!

      @@MikeM14-40 Hi Mike! Why Thank You Kind Sir! 😁😁🤗 Unfortunately, the Henry Vlll Gate isn't deep enough for much more than 2 ranks at a time, mores the Pity, they sounded Great anyway. I heard the Bass Trombone very clearly! Looking at the front of the Band, he's on the Left leaving the Barracks. Because they have such a beautifully balanced sound, you can pick it up very easily. I can fully understand now what you meant about only having 1 Euphonium, it really makes a difference when there's multiple ones, you can hear them much better & I'm sure I heard a Counter Melody, within their Counter Melody if that makes sense. I admit to a certain amount of bias towards the RAF Bands anyway, my Dad was RAF during WW2, but I don't think too many people would disagree when I say they're excellent.

    • @MikeM14-40
      @MikeM14-40 10 місяців тому +2

      Hi again@@vickyRoyalHistory Yes the euphonium part can be quite complicated, and in this instance it's good to hear them as, after all, the euphonium was the main instrument I played. I'd describe its sound as very soothing, whereas a group of trombones has a "makes you stand up" sound (all depending, of course, on how the instruments are being played, who's playing them (with a brass instrument who's playing it can make a big difference to the sound), and the context). My father was also in the RAF, although a couple of years too young for WW2, which I mentioned in the description in my own videos from yesterday, and which was why I thought it was especially important for me to make the effort to go to Windsor yesterday despite the less than ideal weather (very windy, and a bit cold). This band, according to the schedule, is due to be there several more times over the next couple of weeks - let's hope there are a lot more videos.

      @@MikeM14-40 Hi again Mike! I remembered I was supposed to find that link for the Monster Sax. Of Course I can't find the one I wanted, but I did find this one. I suspect this is the Baritone Sax you mentioned, he's in the 3rd Rank, amongst the Tubas (I think there's a Bb as well as Eb) & Euphoniums, he's a Blues & Royal Musician. I also spot 2 Bass Trombones in the Front Rank, a Lifeguard at the Left end & a Blues & Royals at the Right end. Very good the Band is too! The Monster Sax I saw, was even bigger than this one. It may have even been one of MBE's Videos, from Denmark, Norway or Sweden, I'll have a search there.

      @MikeM14-40 10 місяців тому

      Hi again@@vickyRoyalHistory I'm glad you found that video by "Mr B" - I watched it a lot. If you're talking about the Cavalry Sunday 2023 event in Hyde Park at the beginning, you're right about the Tubas - our favourite Bb is in red nearest the camera. You're also right about the Baritone Sax. I think though that there's only one Bass Trombone. That's the player in red nearest the camera, with a reddish-coloured instrument, and he is *very* loud! Unfortunately I haven't seen him for months now, so I don't know what's happened to him. The "blue" trombone at the far end is a Tenor not a Bass - this can be seen in detail in Military Events' video of the same event from the other side of the road:-
      ua-cam.com/video/uwIGwbALd0Q/v-deo.html
      In your same video, via your link above, you might like to listen to the end of the Radetsky March from 35 mins 40 secs, with the "action" at 36 mins 00 secs (the nearest trombone)! The march immediately after that is worth listening to as well. At 37 mins 45 secs the "poor little" single euphonium trying to be heard with its tune but doing a valiant job, and all over again at 40 mins 55 secs. I could listen to that march over and over all day!
      On the saxophones, the next size up from the Baritone Saxophone is the Bass Saxophone - examples here:-
      ua-cam.com/video/3dpCB-a6dEU/v-deo.html
      or:-
      ua-cam.com/video/_mf6RIdH2JQ/v-deo.html
      And if that's not enough, then the biggest is the Contrabass Saxophone:-
      ua-cam.com/video/hXBeu7o9uUM/v-deo.html
      You probably won't see many of those in marching bands!
      Finally, if you really want to see lots of details about the various brass instruments, you might want to look at Trent Hamilton, who's actually from New Zealand (I think). Some of it's a bit silly, some of it's very amusing, but in the main it's very informative and he can play them all as well. A couple of examples:-
      ua-cam.com/video/rmRTx9Liosk/v-deo.html
      and one on the Euphonium vs the Baritone (the 2 main instruments I play):-
      ua-cam.com/video/xCNYwom47sE/v-deo.html
      Happy viewing!
      PS: The weather here is terrible this morning, so unfortunately we may not see the RAF band playing at Windsor - but fingers crossed!

A very Polished Drum Major, She is Flight Sergeant Jeanette Scott & she has the distinction of being the First ever Female Drum Major in all the Armed Services. SDM Gareth Chambers is my Favourite, but she ranks right up there.

      @@supernutkin5122 I don't believe I've seen him before. I don't see very many Marching Videos of the RM Bands & most of them are static Concerts. On the few occasions I've seen them Marching, they're being led by a Marine I took to be their Band Director or what ever they call their Director of Music, certainly not a a DM in Drum Corps Uniform. I'll have to search You Tube for him. I really like the DMs of the various Armed Services Bands, their Style & Direction make a big difference to the overall performance of the Band I think.

      May I suggest you watch any Royal Marines Massed Bands videos when they're marching, not sitting in concert halls, etc.
      Corps Drum Major Chris Mace (yes, coincidentally Mace is his name) has been in this senior position for a couple of years now so you'll see him leading the other 4 Drum Majors on state occasions.
      I personally prefer to watch RM MARCHING Bands, not orchestral, etc.

    Thanks for bringing us an excellent video, MBE. I was there yesterday, and was worried that this wouldn't be properly covered, because I didn't immediately see any of the "regulars" filming it. On a couple of general notes (forgive the pun!), it might not be immediately apparent to some viewers just how windy it was, even by Windsor standards (in my limited experience), which I know can play havoc with the sound. I like some of your low-level filming, which certainly adds a different nuance to the acoustics. And I'm glad you got "Trafalgar" in at the end. I'm becoming convinced, although I haven't tried a metronome against it, that this band marches at a slightly faster rate of beats per minute than some of the others. On a humorous note, I was convinced for a second that I was hearing the start of a cat fight at 13:20!
    As a slight aside, I particularly liked your fairly recent video of the Band of the Scots Guards at the Guards Polo Club.

      Thanks for the kind comments Mike on the video! Glad you liked the style of recording also. Sorry for swiftly cutting across your own video at one point! I was fortunate enough to have a few days off work and I couldn’t not come and watch the RAF on a unusual stint in Windsor! I wish I could be there much more than what I am but due to work or actually doing the parade in Windsor itself from time to time it is often hard to film things on every day off! Glad you liked the Guard Polo Club one too.

      Hi again@@MilitaryBandsEverywhere , and thanks for your reply. Thanks also for owning up to crossing my video, but to be honest I didn't really notice! I'm fairly new to filming at Windsor, but am now very used to the crowds etc. That's why I've more or less given up trying to film in the High Street and at the castle entrance, and at my age I need to try and keep out of other peoples' way - I've already fallen over once trying to film and walk at the same time while negotiating the crowds. Anyway, I hope you can keep up the good work with your videos, and I'm sure I speak for many in saying how much they're appreciated, not least when it's all in addition to your "day job".
