Part 1. Demolition of the Breezeway Motel on Route 50 in Fairfax, Virginia. It is one of several 1950s-era motels to be demolished recently. This part of it was built in the 1960s.
Produced by John Z Wetmore, producer of "Perils For Pedestrians".
How many watching this video were conceived there?
I’ve been watching this for about an hour now. I made some observations and read all comments and replies. This appears to have been poorly maintained or vacant for some time. It more than likely been constructed in modular sections either in a factory or onsite and lifted in place. The telltale signs are the double walls between units and floor and ceilings from upper and lower. Now the drywall was more likely removed prior to demolition because it more contained asbestos fibers. Which was highly common in a wide range of building materials.
I hope they saved that iconic sign out front. That has a bit of history.
sign is still up as of yesterday, Feb 12. glad they’re saving it!
How many bed bugs lost their lives after this demolition?
Anyone seen Batteries Not Included. It be nice if those saucers from Batteries not included came and rebuilt the whole Breezeway Motel like brand new, like how they rebuilt that Apartment building that was burnt down in New York City. Than suddenly other buildings around it like in the ending of Batteries Not Included.
Why didn't they use a claw bucket. Must faster.
I miss all those cheaper motels back in the day all they have now is very overpriced Hotels now.
Huh. I used to live near here. I was at adc nearby, therapy in ffx, I passed the breezeway pretty much daily for years haha. Gonna be a bit weird next time I’m up there for work.
Why did they remove all of the dry wall, that was a was of time.
It can be recycled. Better to get money for some material instead of paying to dump it in a landfill.
Plenty of scrap metals in this job
Actually OP can I message you somehow? You do ffx demo work?
I just film demolitions, I don't do them. But if you need it, my email: john@pedestrians.org
Yes hi breezeway motel hi do you have any rooms with a good breeze ? Oh y certainly sir we're remodeling as we speak, even have suites available if you'd like, the price is really reasonable to lol
"Several rooms just opened up."
I certainly hope it's not noisy, they have a free breakfast, a swimming pool, bar because holiday Inn down the street was very loud, green water in their pool ughhh, the hotel staff ? Well let's just say um um 🙄🤔🙄🤔🤓🤓 crusty hair, smelled, looked so ruff that even the cockroaches packed up,left town 😅 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤯🤓🤓🤯 Roflma
"Here at The Breezeway, Sir, our prices will blow you away." 😂
Or, "I see you have a reservation, Sir. Would you like a demo'd or non-demo'd room?"😂
crazy Demolition chaotic system
Is that asbestos in the walls
No sir, that is fiberglass insulation. Most asbestos that is till in buildings come in ceiling tiles, floor tiles and fireproofing spray type foam. Now days any asbestos must be removed prior to any demolition and has to be done by hand by people in full body suits and also using self contained breathing apparatus and placed in sealed containers or bags and off the premises before this type of demolition begins. You certainly never release any of it into the atmosphere, intentionally,
glassfibre insulation same as the stuff used in lofts
definently gives a new meaning to breezway motel also standard box type construction l&k brown fronts orange fronts howard johnsons grey hawthorne this one was white generick also side note trip to washington dc we stayed at hawthorne also not shure think breezway motel was in a burt renolds film

I see some signs of quality construction. There were double walls with fiberglass insulation to reduce sound transmission between units.
I wonder why they framed the unit walls with steel studs and then the interior walls (bathroom?) with wood.
Likely reconfigured the rooms at some point, and to save cost went with wood
@@lukelegg9915 I suspect you are right, as I didn't see wood framing in other rooms later in the project.
Someone on here suggested the Motel was of prefabricated modular construction. If so, this would make sense as the bathrooms would be added later and thus in wood studs. This would allow for various plumbing configurations on site. The other, more important, reason for the double walls between the units would be for fire resistance. Also, it looks like they had adjoining room configuration. And, yes, it looks well built, except those staircases. 😮
a rooms with a view
Kind of an inefficient tool of choice. Bucket thumb combo would prob go faster and make it easier to sort to start.
I rather agree and if we observe well we have the impression that there is a double quick coupler do I have a vision problem or did you notice the same thing
There is no furniture at this demolition
The furniture was removed and trashed two months earlier.
Why don’t they just save it and turn it into a homeless shelter
Probably because the value of the land exceeds the building and will probably be used as apartments
That would have made more sense and that's not very active these days.
Homeless shelters don't create paychecks, they create more homeless.
Not worth the cost of upkeep and maintenance?
Cost to much to fix
As slow as this operator is, he MUST be UNION as anyone being paid by the job would have had that building down in a third of the time! This is like watching moss grow!
Takes time
I think he’s trying to separate out as much steel as possible during demolition, which will make it faster to get it ready to scrap. There’s a lot of steel in this building!
When he has material over the metal pile why doesn't he shear it through ? I agree with the slow operator comment.
Why break it into smaller pieces, so there are more to load, when it's already in small enough pieces? Not to mention he couldn't. That's a masonry shear, not a steel cutting shear. While it has a small cutting area in the back of the jaws to cut re-bar, most of the jaw area is blunt.
Saw it all blocked off as!sad to see more cookie cutter homes coming
Paid by the hour huh? Slowest demo ever!!!
The rats say thank you.
