This too! A linear bass line to help us understand the product. This is why I will be buying the product, all the other videos are just people going crazy which drives me nuts and don't actually show the settings.
Amen! Given that slap doesn't come up that often in the music I listen to and play, it's no help seeing somebody slap-wank all over every tech demo. Just play a goddamn bassline, as if you were a bass player playing a song! I know. Radical, huh?
I’m super surprised with this demo. I expected nothing but Rush riffs but you come right out of the gate playing some kickass metal. Kudos to you, sirs. Kudos to you. Also, the fact that you put “Josh” in the signal chain is amazing and I love it.
I have one on these and I love it. I had a very simple modification made to mine to combine the drive and deep signals within the unit itself which allows me to run one cable out of the unit into my amp with the blended signal. I also had another modification made to change the function switch from mute to bypass. These are easy changes to make and can just as easily be changed back if desired. I got the info from the tech at Tech 21.
This is THE best product demonstration I have ever seen on UA-cam. Minimal but helpful speech which really works. But all demonstrations of many different types of settings REALLY helped me make a decision. I will get this product. What helped me the most was when you manipulated the Mid Shift and Mids which is very important to me as I aim for more of Geddy Lees late 80s early 90s Wal Bass sound. I will only use the Drive on fast, hard rock songs. Thank you soo much for this video. You got Tech 21 another sale!
Just started using this in 2021. It changed my life. LOL Really. I run it into a two channel QSC or Crown power amp and send the two separate signals to two cabs and balance how much power each gets. I have experimented with different cabs and have gotten lots of variation. I really like all the options I get with this preamp instead of combos and heads I have had in the past. When I don't want or need a stack, I use an old school Acoustic bass head with two channels to blend the signals when I want to play in a small setting through one 15".
@@1thess523 I have 2, one for the Church/backup which runs direct to the board and the other is for home. At home I'm running through a QSC GX3. The drive channel is running into channel 1 that runs to a Markbass traveler 2x10 and the deep is channel 2 and runs to a Markbass 1x15. It's pretty beastly. There's not a lot I can't do with this rack and I still feel like I still haven't really exploited it's full potential.
racermech The bass is tuned to D Standard for this video. Will and Nick usually tune to E Standard for most videos and Josh is normally in Eb Standard.
Know what dude, other then alternating basses with different pickup configs, I sound the same regardless of what I plug into, it's almost all your fingers. When your onstage with 3 guitarists, a vocal ensemble, keyboards and a very aggressive drummer, NOBODY is going to notice if your using tubes or fet let alone some silly cab sim.
Great Video as always but I have a question. I know it is a bit late :D What is the effect of amps do you use in this video like markbass and rocketbass. Why don't you use only mixer?
especialy with a double output from a Rick O Sound of the rickenbacker, could be fun to use in the back of an ampeg with half of the output on the PA, a swiss army knife tool for bass player like every sanamp product from Tech 21
Awesome review as usual! This sounds killer. Im already using the Deluxe VT Bass so that i can switch between different presets of overdrive. I would love to build this into my rig (Fender MIA Jazz - Deluxe VT Bass - EBS Reidmar 500 - EBS Proline 410) but then i feel like i have too many PreAmp EQs. I keep the amp set to a very clean setting and use the DVT for all of the character. Do you think its possible to add the GED to the rig for more sound possibilities (I'm also thinking of that dual DI out). Thanks for any advice!
besides me and my Fender MIA Jazz bass its the basis of my sound. I own the deluxe and the single pedal version (and the Bass fly rig which uses the VT circuit apparently). i love them all. the deluxe is simply great because of the chance to save settings and create presets. i haven't had much luck with using the effects loop yet though. something is coloring the sound and i cant figure out what it is.
So is this something I can put in my PA rack and send it to the board? I've got a Lexicon efx unit for chorus. Id like to avoid buying bass cabinets since I've got 6 15's in the PA.
@@styles.bichley What a horrible thing to say. Billy is not only an amazing person but is a legendary bass player, and his sound is fantastic. Don't be such a dickhead

@@johnswartz7285 sorry I didn't realize I had a response. I was thinking about this pre with a qsc gx3. I have markbass traveler 2x10 and 1x15 cabs and would run the drive into the 10s and the deep into the 15. I've tried the pre at Sweetwater, but it was hooked into a gk mb800 with the jumper mod. Loved it's tone but wish I had my basses with to truly test it out. Both are G&L L2000s
@@geekguitars I used to own a QSC GX5 - great amp. I ended up switching to the Peavey due to the weight (about 7 lbs vs 20 or so for the QSC) - not huge deal unless you're gigging alot. You could definitely run the "Drive" channel to one input and the "Deep" to the other on the QSC.
Would have improved demo to run this unit direct into d.i. or flat mixer channels. Placing a mic in front if two different bass amp and cabinet types is not a "transparent" way to demo this tonally. Also you could inform single bass amp people how you can wire the low drive output back via the rear panel fx return for a combined mono output from both channels and demo how that sounds. Great sounds anyway but 8/10
Fun fact, Geddy was using prototype units during the last Rush tour instead of the usual monster racks with the demeters. This signature is not a shill product, the endorser uses the gear.
Andrew M I was wondering about that, it seems like it would be a pretty awkward oversight to not build this thing to allow you to run it into one amp. Sure, you can use mixers but a simple switch would be much nicer (and less expensive.)
There are two jumpers in the unit. One that when reversed allows both signals to be combined within the unit and lets you use one cable from the unit to your amp. The other one allows you to use the function switch as a bypass instead of a mute. Tech 21 sent me a download with diagrams explaining how to do this. It is very simple and just as easy to reverse if you wish. By eliminating the Morley ab/y box I was using, I also eliminated nearly all of my background noise and the unit still sounds great.
You can also run a 1/4" patch cable from the output of the "Deep" channel into the Effects Return (and engage the "50/50" switch on the back). The output of the "Drive" channel is now the two channels blended (with "Level 1" serving as a Master Volume and "Level 2" serving as a "Channel Blend").
Maybe Im wrong but isn't the idea of this to get out of the amp and cabinet???? Thats the idea behind the washer and dryer and chicken cookers on stage.. Its a joke but its real... The dirt sounds sooo different and separate from the clean tone. I’m not a big fan of that sound. I like it to sound like a continuum from just a tiny bit of hair on relatively clean lows to crunchy mids to hairy but not overly tin can/boss distortion pedal sounding highs.
Even if I did have an extra thousand dollars lying around, I'd *still* go with the Tech 21 GED-2112 Geddy Lee Signature SansAmp and a quality Class-D Power Amp, as opposed to quickly destroying my Back hauling an Ampeg 8x10" and SVT, as well as playing a Ricky 4003.
