Great video. As always putting more ideas in my head to make my fishing more enjoyable! Thanks for doing these videos Steve! You are the source of pragmatic solutions for these issues.
Great tip and discussion of how to use. I have an inflatable kayak and made a H-mount to hold the cam pole assembly. The H-mount ties down to the D rings on the hull. I have a PVC counter weight(filled with lead fishing weights) to offset the cam pole and aid camera stability and deformation of the inflatable hull. Thanks- this tip added to our kayak adventure trips!
I don't care about fishing, but shooting video, and this is brilliant work here... excellent job! Very well done! The pole being in the picture - to me, is not even an issue, the shot that you achieve is fantastic, just for recreational kayaking alone.
This just saved me from buying a second camera. :D Thanks SO much for your contribution to this sport! You have motivated me to do videos of my own. Can't wait until Jan! Maybe you will even watch a few of them... lol
Thanks. Just a little wobble and I think one of those cameras with internal stabilization will solve that. The latest GoPros have that feature, but are too expensive.
Kayak Hacks Fishing I hear ya! Ridiculously expensive these days. I tried making a few mounts but ended up buying the Railblaza boom and added an extention to it. Does the same thing as your device only it cost 5x as much in sure haha. Multiple pivot points/camera angles. It's still an amazing mount.
This video is amazing. It not only gives us an amazing idea, but it also planted a few more ideas into my head that I could do as well on my kayak. Thank You!
Do you use the 45 connector? When I tried it just using the straight pipe, the pipe was always in the shot. Also, did you figure out a better way to reduce the wiggle?
Kayak Hacks Fishing I attached a Scotty mount to my kayak and then bought a cheap monopod in Walmart and modified so it would fit nicely in the Scotty mount. I like it because you can extend it really long and with the Scotty mount I can change the angle of the monopod up or down and sideways. You can see me use it in one of my latest videos. There is no wiggle on this set up😁
Back to the drawing board for me, well, sorta. Out hunting the other day and using my Kodak Playsport camera on a selfie stick, slid into a DIY gearhead pole mount like yours. Everything works great, except I did not hook up the DIY tether to the selfie stick. Goose hunting on the river is a lot of fun, and the excitement level got the kayak a rockin back and forth.... and then it was gone. Selfie stick and camera in 7-8' water, with a strong current. Gone, didn't bother fussing. I bbought a new camera, will be in the mailbox Friday. I like this swing arm idea, and will likely design a version of this using the parts that come with the camera - Garmin Vibe Elite. The difficult part is it swings outside the kayak DIY blind I made, so I'll need to make that work w/o hanging up on stuff. Watch for my build video next week. Thanks for posting your videos, as you can see, I'm a DIY guy myself.
OUCH. I feel your pain. The wind knocked my GoPro tripod over when I was doing video on a pier.... gone.. gone... gone. I subscribed to your channel in anticipation of seeing your next solution!
Looks great, I actually use a telescopic aluminum pole that I got from Wal-Mart, it was for washing your car windows and squeegee. I have yet to try it but I think it will work out ok.
That will work. However, without the 45 degree connector, you will see more of the pole in your videos. Maybe there is something you can attach to the end to create the same offset.
Great concept, thank you for the video and ideas. My concern for this would be when taking down rivers or any areas of possibly capsizing. A much more stable version would be ideal, but with pvc and hitting river bottoms on rapids, this would be a wrap. Loving the different perspective from the camera though.
My only suggestion would be to remove it from the scotty mount when approaching a risky area and securing it to the kayak along with the other gear. Good point. Thanks.
I don't think having the camera mount pole is a bad thing necessarily. Also I went ahead and did this to my kayak as well. Been looking for a solution and this is perfect.
This looks alot like Bayport Park. I like this set up but on narrow (and busy) paddles like the Weeki Wachi this may cause problems. I definitely like the set up. Is the footage shakey because of the length of the poles? I love the composition it gives you.
Once I changed the mount to a regular scotty mount vs the gear head adapter it smoothed out. However, you do need to paddle smoothly to minimize the shake. Ideally, I'll upgrade to a camera that has internal stabilization.
Well done Steve.I do a lot of filming here in Australia.I will be looking at doing this as I do use the above the head shot.May I ask, what length did you make the pole?
I just added the complete parts list to the description. I used a 34" long and 13" short section. But, you should cut them long and see what works best for your kayak before going final.
Actually, not bad at all. Pivot the camera to the rear when not using it to protect it from spray by either turning the long arm to the rear or just spinning the camera. Even then, unless the weather is throwing up spray, I have not had an issue. There may be a spot or two on the lens from paddle splash every once in a while.
Sorry for the late reply. The two sections are 17" and 34" - but there was no real science in picking those lengths. They just seemed right for the kayak.
I use the cameras. On my Hero4, I use a DIY windscreen I sewed around a SONY ECMCS3 mic. I used the furry material you can buy as the screen. On the Session, nothing and the polarizing filter actually makes it worse. You bring up a good point. When pulling the audio using only the Session, I should have used my handheld recorder with a windscreen. Trying to edit the wind sound in post production never works as this video shows. However, in the rest of the video I only used the Hero4 w/windscreen audio track and that turned out pretty well on a pretty windy day. I also use lavalier mics with commercially sold, cheap wind filters - to see how well they work, check out my GoPro playlist.
Here is a brief synopsis of a build I did you are welcome to use anything here as if not for you I probably wouldn’t have accomplished it. Remove bottom of monopod using a vice grip carefully so to not damage tubing epoxied in a 1/4” -20 x13/16 expansion nut this was same thread at toilet bolt. Took pvc cap sanded down bottom to make it flat drilled hole in it inserted toilet bolt that I but a single layer of Teflon plumbing tape on it to make getting excess epoxy off. Used a 1/4 x20 nut on toilet bolt I left about 1/2” of bolt sticking out bottom of cap the nut I screwed in all the way. Put epoxy in cap just enough to cover nut. I used a threaded cap so the epoxy could have something to hold it in better. After letting epoxy cure for 2 hours it was no longer sticky to the touch I unscrewed everything cleaned off the Teflon tape using a dental pic( I use it for gun cleaning) My total cost for making an approximately 6’+ GoPro camera mount for my Big Rig was code to $50 about 1/2 the price of the ready made units. I may a shorter version also using schedule 40 pipe. A lot of what I built was learned by watching your videos. What happens if a fish tries to wrap around the kayak and the line is on a collision course toward the PVC/camera? Are you able to move the unit easily enough to avoid the snarl?
I can change the angle I’m still confused what gearhead he’s talking about that he put his Scotty mount into that allows it to just freely swivel. Can anyone link that for me?
ain't the scotty mount position's fixed? how is he rotating it? can someone help me out with this? I don't see the specific scotty mount parts he used listed in the video description
Yes, you can lock a Scotty down. With this, I let it "float" just above the point where you could push it down into a permanent position. I used these parts - the mount - amzn.to/3eUxBJh and any of the Scotty rod holders will work to hold the PVC - amzn.to/3f1RJJT
I’m new to kayaking. I’ve just bought a used Pelican Castaway 116. I’m very interested in the seat you are using. I’m about your size and you look very comfortable. Would you please tell me the brand and model of the seat?
Nice job! I Just created a UA-cam account and purchased a GoPro Session to film. I have a kayak and 14' Jon boat and I am seeking ideas for this springs mods. I plan on using your tips!
There is a bit of motion that aligns with the motion of the kayak. The good news is that modern action cameras have built in stabilizing software that smooths things out. I usually just use this when I am stationary.
With the right angle, the pipe stays out of the side shots. If I think of it, I can push the pole all the way to the rear and it is pretty much hidden by my body/seat. But, you are correct if you are not careful in how you record the video.... something I need to get better at.
Kayak Hacks Fishing As long as we enjoy of our hobbies, nothing else matters :-) Personally, I love shooting photos and videos for my own purposes and roaming in woods, but sometimes it's quite hard to combine these two. It's funny how the other takes away from the other... PVC pipes are awesome and so affordable. Keep it up and thanks for sharing these vids!
My favorite shot is with the extension pole behind you on the starboard side. Beautiful view and it would catch all the action. Thank you for sharing!
This is probably the most straightforward and affordable version of a DIY mount I've seen yet. Bravo
Great video. As always putting more ideas in my head to make my fishing more enjoyable!
Thanks for doing these videos Steve! You are the source of pragmatic solutions for these issues.
I really appreciate that! I'll work even harder!
Thank you for showing the homemade mount in action.
lol! Another PVC creation!
Camo that white pvc, or spray black would look better. Great video. Thanks God bless.
Yep. I did that a bit later. Thanks for the suggestion.
That had to be a real challenge to get that to work!
I don't care about fishing, but shooting video, and this is brilliant work here... excellent job! Very well done! The pole being in the picture - to me, is not even an issue, the shot that you achieve is fantastic, just for recreational kayaking alone.
Thank you very much!
Painting it black with fusion will make the pole dissappear.
This just saved me from buying a second camera. :D Thanks SO much for your contribution to this sport! You have motivated me to do videos of my own. Can't wait until Jan! Maybe you will even watch a few of them... lol
Send me a message via UA-cam when you start posting!
Love this and I think I will be implementing it into my kayak filming
Def cheaper than the mounts you can buy! Nice work

Cool I have my side camera with a similar Scotty set up. I love the flexibility it provides! Great video, Love your ideas!

I like the pool noodle you put on it to make sure it will float!

Nicely done! I'm no great diy-er, but I think I could figure this out!
Get some great shots!
I don't think having the camera mount pole is a bad thing necessarily. Also I went ahead and did this to my kayak as well.
Been looking for a solution and this is perfect.
Glad I could help!
Thanks for the info sir ... Great view angle fromside of the kayak .. terbaikkkkkk
Excellent video Sr., the instructions and editing are very good. As a photographer and fisherman I`m very grateful for your advice. Thank you!
Thank you very much. Learning to edit is a steep curve made harder by using cheap software!
Hahaha,,,you are doing a good job...Thank you again.
Nice work!
Thanks!
Great video of the application. Do you have a video of the build? PVC size? How the camera mounts to the end fitting?
I will add that info to the description. Thanks for the poke on that.
Great job I like it
thanks!

Great camera Hack! How long is the first pole, and the length of the pole by the camera? Thanks!!
Sorry for the late reply. The two sections are 17" and 34" - but there was no real science in picking those lengths. They just seemed right for the kayak.
Do you capture sound totally with your camera, or do you have a separate recording setup? Thanks.
I use the cameras. On my Hero4, I use a DIY windscreen I sewed around a SONY ECMCS3 mic. I used the furry material you can buy as the screen. Great info in your videos! I subbed yesterday. Sidebar, anyone else think he sounds a bit like Hank Hill? Makes it that much more entertaining. 😂
Everyone says that, but they are wrong. Hank sounds like me, not the other way around!
Good point! You predate him by a year or two. I’m planning on your rail mount hack, from another video, being my furst kayak hack project.
I tell ya hwat that kayak could use a tank of clean burning propane xD
JW G , not a fan of that model?
That model is nice, I was making a king of the hill joke.
I have the first generation ones without image stabilization. Too bad because it looks like a good build.
I just got a goPro 9. I need to try it out on this when I get back on the water. I hope the built in stabilization will be the ticket.
What happens if a fish tries to wrap around the kayak and the line is on a collision course toward the PVC/camera? Are you able to move the unit easily enough to avoid the snarl?
Yes, I have not had any issues. You can rotate it all the way in to be next to the seat
I really like your kayak, where did you get it from and how much to deliver to the UK. 😊 👍
Sorry, I can't help. I bought it from my local kayak store. This was my old Native kayak - maybe their website can help you. nativewatercraft.com/
Great hack
Thanks! Hopefully, I will have better video next season as a result of this!
I can change the angle I’m still confused what gearhead he’s talking about that he put his Scotty mount into that allows it to just freely swivel. Can anyone link that for me?
I was using one of these - amzn.to/48S6Iic
question how long those pvc pipe what size are they
I have the parts list in the description. The length will be subject to your particular kayak.
ain't the scotty mount position's fixed? how is he rotating it? can someone help me out with this? I don't see the specific scotty mount parts he used listed in the video description

Nice job! I Just created a UA-cam account and purchased a GoPro Session to film. I have a kayak and 14' Jon boat and I am seeking ideas for this springs mods. I plan on using your tips!
Perfect!
What are the sizes of the two pvc pieces?
I used 1 1/4 inch to minimize wobble. The parts list is in the description.
Kayak Hacks Fishing I used your idea and works perfect, now im gonna paint it with black flex seal ....thanks
Don't you have a 133x?
I do not know what that is. Can you send a link?
NIce video! Excellent views. Thanks for the post---but please stop saying "go ahead and..."
Noted!
Wobble?
There is a bit of motion that aligns with the motion of the kayak. The good news is that modern action cameras have built in stabilizing software that smooths things out. I usually just use this when I am stationary.
Nice idea, but the pipe kind of ruins the shots. In a way telephone poles ruin nature photography.

if you painted that pole a different color ... you wouldnt notice it so much in your videos ... i am sure you thought of this already .... tho
What a great idea! I picked up some paint today. Thanks!
