Luke, I figured that you had a deeper knowledge of photography with that small collection of vintage cameras behind you, especially those TLRs. You emphasize that many of the tips are your preference but with the explanations you give for each tip you really are teaching the possible best way to record your kayak journey. Good video, great teaching!!
Jorge R Gonzalez Photography thanks so much! My dad is a photography buff, so I grew up taking photos with him. It's always been a passion, so I love bringing everything I've learned and keep learning about photography/videography to kayaking. It's an awesome medium to shoot. Thanks for the kind words! Cheers.
Thanks. Appreciate the help. Just going to start filming this spring. Been kayaking and canoeing forever, thought I'd give it a try. Keep up the good videos. Really enjoy them.
New to Kayaking (Southwest Florida) and got a GoPro 8 to record interesting sightings. I am also new to photography and was starting to hyperventilate with trying to understand settings. Thank you for your comforting perspective.
I was searching all my life for the Kajak Hipster - glad I found him today! Absolutely awesome filming tips when you are out there with your seakayak. Thanx from Germany and the Baltic Sea. Markus
WOW! Thanks for the education. I feel like I got an entire college course in 10 minutes. So much here for me to explore. Thanks for taking the time to share.
One tip for you is if you don't have another camera to switch to, change the field of view on your gopro. That can help you get away from the action came fisheye look. Great tips!
Will you be making an updated version of this video? With how cameras and technology change, I wonder if there are other cameras and gear that you would now recommend.
I'm just getting into moving beyond occasional handheld iPhone/ LifeProof case shots while out paddling. I mean I have it with me for comms anyway. So my wife has some old GoPros at work collecting dust I may repurpose now that I got some how-to's from Kayak Hipster of course! *btw, I'm noticing that in a lot of your 2017 & 18-vintage uploads that when you cut scenes in the studio, there is always a distant beeping or chiming. Sounds exactly like my washing machine when it's done, lol.
Awesome advice. Especially with the camera being off centered. I sometimes run multiple angles when I know something goods coming. I also end up with a ton of footage that gets cut way down. I find the fixed camera steaight down the bow of the kayak is a favorite to use but may have to try some of your suggestions especially the off to the side behind you(looks awesome). The settings on the camera are my weakness for sure. Thanks for all the great suggestions!
This video is awesome! It has really cleared some things up for me and I like how you explained the different preferences. I now have a great idea as to how I will film different action shots
Great ! Very helpful tips :) Im new to GoPro use-age , particularly while kayaking . I’ve been experimenting with different settings . I’ll try your recommendations . I’ve been merging in iPhone videos with GoPro footage.
Biggest take away was, "You do not need to film everything". Ohh man is that a mistake I still do way too often. But you hit the nail right on, if one want to film all, there will be less time to actually enjoy the trip. The art is to know the gear well, and have a plan, because once on the water things happens when they happen. No second chances. Still a work in progress for me.
Great video. I saw a carbon fiber Greenland paddle in your video. What are your thoughts on how they compare with wooden Greenland and what brand do you recommend? I have seen some (Lomo) that split. Any downside to that?
I always use stabilisation and usually have my camera mounted onto my kayak . why do you suggest not having stabilisation on when the camera is mounted to the kayak ? i didn't quite understand why ?
Thanks mate. That was very informative. Just a quick question. I do more Instagram pic then video... for now, lol. Which camera do you find best for pictures while doing a video. Thanks for any help.
Nice video as always Luke. I have just started a university course in video filming and editing and hope to improve :) Some of your tips here will absolutely help me in aching that. And as you say stabilization on when having the camera mounted on the kayak makes the film just weird, but I have forgotten to change settings after filming on land and then putting it on the kayak again. Some ruined sequences!
Thank you for the great video! I am just starting out filming my family and friends. I have 2 gopros and my phone. I think this is enough cameras. How many do you have? Your points have been well taken and appreciated.
I like your video alot and the knowledge you put behind it and i feel this applies to alot more adventures if you could say, but i feel you keep it small by saying this is for kayaks and action cams in the title
My suction cup mount falls off when i try to stick it to my Prijon Grizzly, because the kayak surface is coarse/rough. Almost lost my GoPro in the water.
So true what you´re saying Luke! Finding that balance between capture as much as possible without losing the moment (Good stuff, will definitely tatoo that on my ass! LOL). I think you mentioned something about downsizing video capture in a previous video and I think that goes hand in hand with how "effective" you are with your capture. Really like these kind of videos, how other youtubers think about filming. Thanks for sharing, thumbs up from Sweden!
Magnus Persson I hear you. I find it hard sometimes. But if you make that list of shots you like in your head, you'll be able to capture more in less time, you know? Cheers and thanks as always!
Kurt Penner it’s a great mount. You can find it here, I made a full list with all the equipment I’ve been using for years www.amazon.com/shop/kayakhipster?listId=1COFMDE3A45U7
You said something briefly about a shoulder mount for a camera. How can I find one that is appropriate for kayaking (resistant to salt water, fits well with a PFD, ...)? Isn't difficult to focus on a subject if the camera moves with a shoulder?
Joseph Felber absolutely. I will add a link to the shoulder mount and send it your way. The one I've been using for years is great. Sure, if you're paddling hard it'll move the camera. But if I want to shoot for a minute, I'll paddle a little calmer while I shoot, then go back to paddling normally, you know? Or I just stop paddling while I'm shooting.
OK. Thanks. I look forward to seeing the link. I was also looking for an easy way to store my camera for quick access, in case I see something on little notice that I want to photograph. (My PFD does not have a pocket.) Quick-release from a shoulder mount might be just the thing.
Thank you Kayak Hipster. I have a FujiFilm FinePix camera, so I would need to get an adapter to be able to mount the camera to this shoulder strap mount. From what little I could see in the Amazon description, it seems that the added length ("radius") from the strap (pivot point) would not be so much to noticeably decrease the stability of the camera. (Farther from the strap means, at least in theory, more susceptibility to vibrations.) I wonder how fast I could remove the camera, either at the GoPro mount adapter or at the shoulder strap, if I suddenly saw something like a dolphin and wanted quickly hold the camera in front of me so I could see the subject on the camera display.
Joseph Felber I would check to see if an adapter like this one Action Cam Mount ALUMINUM Conversion Adapter for GoPro Mounts (1/4-Inch 20) Adapter for Action Camera - works with ALL devices that have 1/4-20 - Aircraft Grade Aluminum By TACKFORM www.amazon.com/dp/B06XFQFG1V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_3llAAb2QYFYA0 Would give you enough clearance. I've used it for a couple of other instances and it's a great adapter that holds cameras tight. As far as ease of release, it's awesome. You open the safety, and slide the camera out. That's it. Then slide it back, lock it in place.
Thomas Evers haha, it's a old running joke with my friends. I used to play in a NYC rock band years ago, and my friends used to tease me about my skinny jeans and beard, so the name just stuck when I was looking for something kayaking related. For the drysuit, make sure you wear it ahead of time. Check that the neck gasket isn't too tight. And walk into the water with it, make sure you're not too cold in the water before going paddling. Remember it only keeps you dry, you need to layer up appropriately underneath
Notes for me: Action Cam: turn it on for time periods I suspect may provide interest, and let it be. Turn it off when interest is gone. This allows more immersion in activity, and less focus on filming. Drone: Almost always structured shots. Set up, known or expected content, and attempts to control framing and viewpoint and tracking. Try to decide what your day will be in advance, and then don't stress it!: film focus, activity focus, or up in the air.
Kayak Hipster I often take footage on a cheap Chinese GoPro and my iPhone the quality of the video is good but have no idea where to start with editing it all even down to which apps to use etc. Look forward to watching your future videos.
Cormac O' Bric I use Premiere Pro. But any editing software at all would do. You don't need anything fancy to put together a nice video. I think most editing programs will run on windows.
Here's a link to one of my early action cam kayak vid'sua-cam.com/video/3nvCA76ElqU/v-deo.html. I know some of the shots went too long and use of pro tune was not consistent, otherwise, please tell me what you would have done differently. Love your channel, keep it up,
MARTIN W I thought that was a fantastic look back at your trip. One thing you could add would be to film a bit holding the camera while you're on the water. Maybe if you stop for a quick break or just sit for a minute, so you get a sense of you from a different perspective. But it really was great. Well done. Cheers!
So awesome that you took the time to review my video, thanks! You are right about breaking up the point of view. I have done that in a few videos and it does break up the constant "from the deck" perspective. I don't know how you feel, but it's a trade off in trying to be in the moment, and planning how to document the moment on film. I recently posted on Facebook that I threw a dead fish that I found to a Bald Eagle perched in a tree. He took it five feet from me, too fast for me to turn on the Gopro. I complained on my Facebook post about not getting it on video. A kayaking buddy commented "enjoy the memory, damn the Gopro . Right!
By the way, what is your impression of your new Sterling? I have three friends with Sterlings, they love them. Still, one guy is selling his and going back to a NDK Romany. I can forward the sale info if you know of anyone interested.
MARTIN W exactly. It's a trade off. Some things you need to just enjoy in the moment and not worry about the camera at all. I'm still learning where that balance is for me.
MARTIN W I really like it so far. Have not paddled it enough to tell all of its pros and cons yet, but I really like it so far. If I hear if anyone in the market I'll let you know.
Good common sense tips. I really like the tip on multiple mounting equipment, locations and framing. Great food for thought.
These are golden tips. The things you said about FPS and resolution are exactly the way I approach my motocross videos.
Luke, I figured that you had a deeper knowledge of photography with that small collection of vintage cameras behind you, especially those TLRs. You emphasize that many of the tips are your preference but with the explanations you give for each tip you really are teaching the possible best way to record your kayak journey. First time using gopro and your tips are helpful and encouraging! Thank you for the sound advice ;-)
New to Kayaking (Southwest Florida) and got a GoPro 8 to record interesting sightings. I am also new to photography and was starting to hyperventilate with trying to understand settings. Thank you for your comforting perspective.
I was looking for tips to start filming with my first action cam. I have listened to every word of what you said. Thank you, these tips are useful

I like the way your passion comes through. After watching this I can't wait for some warmer weather so we can get out and try some different shots.
Hey man! You did an excellent job on the tricks and tips for kayaking action footage, thank you.
I really like your explanation and tips, it is useful to me buddy, I'm here to support your channel too. God bless.
Wow! Gold vid and the way you describe things is captivating! Thanks for sharing.
One tip for you is if you don't have another camera to switch to, change the field of view on your gopro. That can help you get away from the action came fisheye look. Great tips!
Great vid. Even though I'm in the film industry, I learned a few things.
Great Advice-i have bow and stern mounts on Kayak and love the look and feel it gives,i always tether and is good advice for anyone instead of regret
dismaldog-William cheers!
Thanks for the ideas. Enjoyed the video.
Will you be making an updated version of this video? With how cameras and technology change, I wonder if there are other cameras and gear that you would now recommend.
How do you attach your GoPro to your life vest?
Gracias por los tips! Los tendré en cuenta para mí próxima salida! Saludos! Desde Chaco Argentina.
Great lessons here. Thank you
It`s very helpful to me I am also a kayaker and videomaker
THank you

Tether it! Lost a Hero 7 Black in the river last summer. Wish I had at least put one of those floaty things on it
Great tips there and something we can use as content creators when we buy our canoe. Thanks for sharing. All the best, GnZ
Great ! Very helpful tips :)

How is the shoulder mount for the GoPro or are you using a different action camera?
Thank you for the great video! I am just starting out filming my family and friends. I have 2 gopros and my phone. I think this is enough cameras. How many do you have? Your points have been well taken and appreciated.
I have too many cameras. I then come back with too much footage... gotta find a better balance! Cheers
I like your video alot and the knowledge you put behind it and i feel this applies to alot more adventures if you could say, but i feel you keep it small by saying this is for kayaks and action cams in the title
D E point taken, I'll find a title that better describes it.
great video!

Hi, I am going kayaking with dolphins and I am trying to decide the best way to film this. Where should I mount my camera?
Is it possible to slow down from 60 to 24?
Very helpful thnx
Hey, what is that cool shoulder mount thing? Who makes it?
Kurt Penner it’s a great mount. You can find it here, I made a full list with all the equipment I’ve been using for years www.amazon.com/shop/kayakhipster?listId=1COFMDE3A45U7

Could you please do an instructional video on editing your video?
Martin Roffe sure, that's a great idea. I'll add it to the list
Kayak Hipster I often take footage on a cheap Chinese GoPro and my iPhone the quality of the video is good but have no idea where to start with editing it all even down to which apps to use etc. Look forward to watching your future videos.
I use Microsoft movie maker lol!
Martin Roffe sounds good, will do!
What editing software do people use? What is good software for a Computer with Windows OS or even a Chromebook?
Thanks.
Cormac O' Bric I use Premiere Pro. But any editing software at all would do. You don't need anything fancy to put together a nice video. I think most editing programs will run on windows.
I just lost a GoPro that wasn't tethered down 😢 I wish I had watched this before @KayakHipster
