Crazy how the atmosphere of this series is so good and unique. The game is pretty much empty, but there's something about it that makes me fascinated. I think its the same thing with The Last of Us 1 or RE4, where the world is there, very empty, but you, somehow, feel it.
Many people don't deserve this game..this game world is so beautiful , peace and music tooo it's like dreamy.....so as soon later every gamers will understand this game and I hope they will make mirror edge 3....
I loved the mirror’s edge catalyst open world tho :( it had a super beautiful architecture and world design, with more new mechanics, I think it works so well for an open world, but maybe they could add more fun activities to the open world map
I think it all comes down to preferences. I personally love the cyberpunk genre, and Mirror’s Edge’s striking visuals (both the original and Catalyst) combine with the smooth free-running seems perfect for an open-world parkour game to me. Sometimes I just put on a synthwave playlist and just run. For example, the parkour in Dying Light feels really forced and lackluster to me. ME brings you the sinking feeling when you stand on a building’s edge looking down, makes you feel the weight of each jump, and when you successfully execute a hard sequence of moves you feel gratifying. DL’s parkour is basically run along the street, vault over some cars, jump over a wall, climb a small shed, jump back down to the street and keep running. So in the end, even though DL allegedly “has more stuff to do”, exploring the open-world seems like an absolute chore, whereas just running in ME is much more enjoyable, at least to me.
He didn't even mention the fact that the first game ended on a cliffhanger (and Catalyst is a non-canon prequel) and they replaced Faith's VA with a shittier one. Also, the new Faith doesn't really look like the old one, and I'm not talking about the clothes. All these things serve to sour it for long time fans, making it hard for them to feel invested, and confusing newer ones when they go and try to figure out the canon. This just makes both parties, new and old, say fuck it and go play Battlefront 2.
Just repeating the same old criticisms from years ago.. there's a reason it has a die hard fan base.. and one of those is the fact it's not another dam generic shooter game. There's nothing like it as a "wholistic" gaming experience.. free running, ambience, music score, styling and awesome oob areas u can get to using glitches and play for hrs OUTSIDE of the predefined areas.. one of my favourite games for that alone
Mirrors Edge, Mass Effect, Dead Space, Dante's Inferno - I miss the days when EA actually had the ambition to create electronic art. Or at least interesting and new kind of gaming experiences.
eh i had a lot more fun with Catalyst than with the first game, and the combat is much improved there as well. i don't think people give the game a fair shake.
I must say, having played videogames virtually my whole life, Mirror's Edge Catalyst is the only game that caused me to experience a strong sense of vertigo. This was the most pronounced during the final mission on the Spire. Just insane.
Im playing catalyst for the first time right now and ive actually been liking the story. Multiple times throughout playing ive just been like “man this should be a movie trilogy, or tv show. It could be so cool”
Still love these games. Its a shame such a great idea on paper ultimately flopped financially and even critically when thinking about the second one. I will say though, ME is a bit of a pioneer for first person platforming. Not saying it was the first or even one of the first, just that it really moved the mechanic forward.
Nonsense, the open world was one of the redeeming features on MEC, which I as a good game, the only problem with the map was the cellular nature of the layout which created bottlenecks, the other key issues that kept it from perfect were that they should've kept the guns as they were in the first game and kept the ledge/small gap sliding, i saw so many places in MEC that og faith would have had no trouble with but because the slipping move was taken out there were these intraversable gaps that even my 210lb frame could've squeezed through, also breaking glass panels is highly missed here, as well as reaction mechanics for civilian npcs, they should've been more interactive. The open world in it's current form is better than the og game where it is the same but less of it, and that wasn't a good thing, and i have gone back and played through the original again after playing through MEC, and as much as i loved the forst game the open world environment is simply better. The edge pole swing is cool, and the combat mechanics are better in MEC, so they got that, though killing the kick glitch is highly bittersweet, though to be fair it was way op, so i don't blame them for getting rid of it, The environments are quite nice actually, I didn't find myself bored of them at all, perhaps confounded by the lack of functionality of the archetecture, the overall appearance of it is nice, the archetectural aesthetic is nice, but the actual floor plans are like something from a strange dream, quite absurd from an architectural planning perspective. If i were ea id do aa few expansion packs for MEC in a lead up to new game that takes the best of both games, gets rid of the skill tree nonsense, adds in zelda style collectible items, (the grappling hook was dope) make an open world that's more conducive to exploration, less cellular in nature, with the above issue like lack of certain moves and guns addressed as well. You want a Mirrors Edge game to do what the original did in its time, give more control and variability to the player in a rooftop playground environment, to encourage movement over beatemup combat
I loved Catalyst and I don't mind not having guns. I can understand why they did it so you couldn't use them... The game is a lot more fast and momentum focused so you're supposed to use your agility and speed to fight enemies, using guns would ruin that. Also fits the theme a bit better because it's way in the future so the guns would not work without the correct registered dna/fingerprint (I think it was mentioned somewhere)
@@banana-bunny i understand the logic, but being able to wirld weapons made some of the slower combat scenarios more fun in general, bouncing from enemy to enemy to skillfully acquire new weapons you knew had limited functionality, really you're still stuck with these types of situations in MEC you just have to trade better combat mechanics for the use of firearms, and frankly it was a mistake to not have both, if only to get in an out of combat quicker. There is the problem of the pendulum swinging too far the other direction, becoming hyperfocused such that gameplay becomes repetitive and stale. If they had carried through with the planned expansions it would be less of an issue, but the variability was a feature not a flaw in the original, one of my strongest memories is shooting through the parking garage at the docks, you've got limited ammo, no refills, and you got shoot your way to.more and better bullets, and even if you do, you can't take it with you, no parkour when youve got a 15-50 lb piece of machined steel in your hands, it just mixed things up in a way that was complimentary to the game. In the extreme If its pure running and no other challenges, then its a screensaver, not a game. Getting a good long run only feels good because its a limited resource, and youve got to finght for it, and use great skill, and the draw of both games. I pray to HaShem the next game bring back guns, but like they were in the first game, limited in ammo and limiting in movement, so you can choose that trade off when its expedient.
@@banana-bunny damn good, i love both games, they occupy 1&2 slots in my top games list, with catalyst only barely edging out mirrors edge, just for the better melee and open world, if theyd have kept the few things they neglected to add like breaking glass panes, sliding through narrow gaps, and firearms, they'd have a bigger lead iver the original still 1&2 by miles compared to anything else ive ever played
tbh i like everything about the sequel more then the first game i never found it complicated or clunky i could even turn off runners vision and know where to go and the characters were quite good
I mean in that GeForce now leak it did had a RTX remaster mentioned and surprisingly they are reviving dead space and I think this franchise still has a chance and it may not see the light for some time cause dice is doing some stuff currently but maybe some other studio can pick it up and make something out it but yeah we'll see.
The original was rather bold for its time... You have to remember that in 2008 the gaming world was FLOODED with the expectation that every first person game HAD to be big burly men in war torn scenes with lots of chest high walls to hide behind, basically Halo and Gears of War. Then comes this bright game with a unique look to this day that swapped muscle man for a thin parkour woman. I gotta be the only person I know that loves Catalyst more than the original. The original WAS good for its time, but it didn't age well and I really feel like the story was made up in the last 3 weeks of development. Catalyst isn't the next great novel or anything, but the story and world held my attention a lot more. I think DICE shouldn't have gone full open world like they did in Catalyst, but they did good. I have the Catalyst collectors edition statue in my room and sometimes I look at it depressed because I know this game is never going to get a third game. It's always awesome to me whenever I meet someone who loved the series like me.
Ppl always sooking about Catslyst, and now the characters too apparently I loved the game and the characters I just wished there was MORE interaction and with NPCs also as well as being able to walk on lower ground. Either way loved it, I wish they'd at least release DLC for it.
I would love for the series to make a comeback. I replay Mirror's Edge every now and again because of how serene and fluid it is. The visuals were unlike any other game at the time. Yes the second was nothing to rave about but that first game stuck with me and still stands the test of time.
I love mirror edge because the game really focuses on parkour. sure there are other parkour games but Demn mirror edge really is something. This game need to be come back
There was so many possibilities and opportunities for a better plot driven exciting mirror's edge but unfortunately the series wasn't a priority I remember playing this game year's ago the music aesthetic and atmosphere still holds up today and is beautiful to explore during the puzzles solar fields did a great job on the soundtrack fans are still waiting for Faith's return.
yeah catalyst wasn't a great sequel to the series, but I still play it to this day. It's a very calm and refreshing game. Add in some Mods to bump the graphics and it's beautiful
I don't understand the hate for catalist i love it, sure the story is bs and so is the first ones. The open world is lovely and with out it costum time trials don't exist. Time trials are what gives the game its soul. If you like to be placed in a closed scenario then all you have to do is replay the main missions as manny times as you like.
I ❤ the original Mirror's Edge, it's easily part of my Top 10 List of First Person games of all time, especially because of it's original creative & artistic design. I hope the series gets rejuvenated someday since Catalyst had such a different feel & just wasn't that good of a prequel. (imho)
Just letting all know Mirrors Edge is 4k60 on XSX while Catalyst is 900p with autoHDR and 120fps. They both look stunning, but the original really shines in 4K. Edit: Catalyst is also on Gamespass.
mirrors edge catalyst is better in my opinion. i like the fighting, the finishers, they just need to make the game longer, and able to double counter the guards.
Mirror's Edge Catalyst is not a bad game. At the core it's still the same as the first + extra stuff that was unnecessary. As far as the story goes I agree, but the first one wasn't interesing either, you didn't play that for the story. It was all about the gameplay and atmosphere and Catalyst still delivers on those.
dude seeing "financial district 1:58 pm" made me so nostalgic and sad. I miss the atmosphere of this game. It really feels like the atmosphere of real life when I would go downtown into the city as an 8 year old and look up at the big buildings and just have a feeling of peace and calm. I miss that shiit soooo much lol
Mirrors Edge needs a new game on Next-Gen only consoles. Imagine running through Glass at 60fps in 4K with beautiful graphics while a banger beat plays while you’re running. I wouldn’t even care if the game doesn’t do anything new to the formula. I just want a next-Gen Mirrors Edge
The fact discussed in the video is just so true. These days studios that can make such great games fear to fail and incur losses just to experiment something new. As a result we gamers are getting same bunch of games with is just fluffed with some boring side quests or open world to fill up the time. The smaller studios free from this try hard to try out new things but for them, budget becomes the problem. I hope something can level this out and we can once again enjoy fresh and new concepts that are nicely implemented. I think this is asking a lot but is it really?
Ask yourself would you gamble to lose your job every year + lose the money you put aside, or would you rather have a save working place without risk that pays well? People complain all the time, nothing is good enough for the hordes of the toxic, entitled gamers today. if you go experimental you get hate, people dont want to preorder either, they dont like DLC and dont want games as a service or ads. There is no way to create experimental, creative games with a AAA budget with the toxic customers mentality, who dont even want to pay.
@@bellonasservant4496 you are probably right bro. Even if someone likes one thing, there will be someone disliking the same. Guess gotta make a list of things we want and then give it to studios to get customised games XD
@@khushjain8679 people arent able to agree on a list either.... wich is actually a good thing. It would be boring if everyone had the same taste. The bad part is the pool of games gets smaller and more low budget the more you stray away from the mainstream. In that case there are "2" main options. Support the small indie, niche games with your money, or develop your own games. Toning down your expectations also helps.
I remember when I was like 8 years old, picking this game up from a knock off blockbuster like 2 minutes walking from my house. As an 8 year old, I didn't care for anything but the fun parkour. Wil always miss this game and it will always have a special place in my heart!
It's such a shame because they both deserved better. The first game still holds well to this day with its visuals and gameplay. My only complaints were its short length and underdeveloped story. I will defend Catalyst to the death. I loved its improved visuals, more expensive story, open world design, and challenging side missions. My only real complaint was the combat. It could've been better
Literally jusy installed this and was like "I should write a video essay about this" then i look up mirrors edge and the very first video is a video essay on mirrors edge uploaded 2 weeks ago... I love the internet.
Original mirrors edge is still one of my favorite games ever. The open world concept of the 2nd one just didn't work. It was too bland and all those beautiful linear runs that you tried to perfect just couldn't be replicated. What a letdown.
the first seconds of the video gave me goosebumps, ME was one of my favourite game of all time ... the second game, not so much, it felt like it lost it's soul ... too bad
For some reason I feel like somehow mirrors edge will make a come back and it’s going to be amazing who knows maybe it’ll be like a fan game or something fan games are usually better than the originals anyways.
I wish catalyst was better…I do admit the combat is better, altho still not like super in depth or anything. But it didn’t need to be. The open world really was the biggest thing that sucked. The story wasn’t great either. I would really like it if they made a true sequel to the original. Something like how dmc5 was a true sequel to dmc4.
I played both games some months ago to make a review for my channel. The original is still a very enjoyable experience, albeit short. Imho the parkour feels clunky compared to what more modern games have implemented, but it's obvious that they all drew inspiration from it and Assassin's Creed. Catalyst on the other hand improved on all aspects of the movement mechanics, but reaaaally screwed the pooch by making it open-world, particularly in that very uninspired and bland manner. It's a big shame because it has some very good-looking sceneries to admire, but if you experience any degree of open-world fatigue, Mirror's Edge Catalyst will feel like a big chore after a couple of hours into it.
I personally never understood the hate that Catalyst got. I thought it was a huge improvement in all categories. Going back to the original, it felt way more jank and limiting. My only actual complaint about Catalyst was the open world. It wasn't really open, but rather a bunch of linear paths that intersect, with very little activities to do. Plus, there was usually only one or two set paths to get from one area to another. So you end up running the same routs over and over, making it feel really repetitive.
I remember playing the original when I was in secondary school can’t believe this game is 13 years old now i was 12 yrs old now I’m 25 makes feel like time flies fast😭
It came out on Nov 13th, my 13th birthday. 13 was my great gramps' jersey number. It was my grandfather's lucky number, then mine. Combine with that with it being 13 years old and this year I've found major success with my art, quitting my job and everything and to have kicked it off with a Mirror's Edge themed post. Idk man, there's something magic bout this game. Sorry for the ping it's barely related just you talking about time got me thinking hard on it lol
The first Mirror's Edge was MAGIC!, the feel! the atmosphere and the colors and the music, it was so memorable!.. Mirror's Edge Catalyst was okay it wasn't like the Mirror's Edge Magic like the first game. Lets face it, EA as a publisher is a shell of its former self, and it was a shell for a very long time. This game will have no sequel or any update for Catalyst to continue the series, its over. The only way to recover the franchise is someone to buy the IP or EA's decision to change leadership..
Mirror edge is such a underrated franchise that needs to make a comeback.

I loved Catalyst more than the original. It met my demands. People said they wanted an online race, but for the next game I need a coop
Crazy how the atmosphere of this series is so good and unique. The game is pretty much empty, but there's something about it that makes me fascinated. I think its the same thing with The Last of Us 1 or RE4, where the world is there, very empty, but you, somehow, feel it.
Few game mechanics are as satisfying as hitting a flow in Mirrors Edge.
I miss this game
I loved catalyst because of the open world
And in the first one, I loved the fluid gameplay
I got an even better question for you. What the hell happened to GamingBolt?
BOOM
Many people don't deserve this game..this game world is so beautiful , peace and music tooo it's like dreamy.....so as soon later every gamers will understand this game and I hope they will make mirror edge 3....
I loved the mirror’s edge catalyst open world tho :( it had a super beautiful architecture and world design, with more new mechanics, I think it works so well for an open world, but maybe they could add more fun activities to the open world map
Played Catalyst from start to finish during lockdown. Fell in love with the series
Mirrors edge catalyst's story actually had a pretty good understandable story line. maybe its just me.
Mirror's Edge changed my life. I wish they didn't abandon this franchise.
I don’t care what anyone says, ME & MEC are classics and some of the most underrated gems from last generation
You forget to mention how stunning the World is, in Catalyst!
I love catalyst… ist has something that the og mirrors edge cant deliver.
A Comeback would be highly appreciated
eh i had a lot more fun with Catalyst than with the first game, and the combat is much improved there as well. i don't think people give the game a fair shake.
The first game inspired me sm as a kid god damn I wanted to be faith so bad bro I wish I didn't have a fear of heights
I must say, having played videogames virtually my whole life, Mirror's Edge Catalyst is the only game that caused me to experience a strong sense of vertigo. This was the most pronounced during the final mission on the Spire. Just insane.
Despite "all that", I still very much enjoyed playing the Original and the sequel. (I would buy a third release if they offered one.) Pass it on......
modern ea would ask for 60 dollars for the jump feature to work
Im playing catalyst for the first time right now and ive actually been liking the story.
You can definitely see this game’s influence in titles like Dying Light.
The combat in catalyst was great
I love this series and I wish it was given more love. It is so unique and beautiful.
Honestly, whoever says that the combat in Mirrors edge catalyst is clunky just sucks at the game. I think it’s way smoother than the first one
The edge pole swing is cool, and the combat mechanics are better in MEC, so they got that, though killing the kick glitch is highly bittersweet, though to be fair it was way op, so i don't blame them for getting rid of it,
The environments are quite nice actually, I didn't find myself bored of them at all, perhaps confounded by the lack of functionality of the archetecture, the overall appearance of it is nice, the archetectural aesthetic is nice, but the actual floor plans are like something from a strange dream, quite absurd from an architectural planning perspective.
Its a test of agility, of manuverability It's the lotus elise of the videogame franchises where as battlefield is more like a range rover
It's pretty good for what the team had to work with
@@banana-bunny i understand the logic, but being able to wirld weapons made some of the slower combat scenarios more fun in general, bouncing from enemy to enemy to skillfully acquire new weapons you knew had limited functionality, really you're still stuck with these types of situations in MEC you just have to trade better combat mechanics for the use of firearms, and frankly it was a mistake to not have both, if only to get in an out of combat quicker.
@@banana-bunny damn good, i love both games, they occupy 1&2 slots in my top games list, with catalyst only barely edging out mirrors edge, just for the better melee and open world, if theyd have kept the few things they neglected to add like breaking glass panes, sliding through narrow gaps, and firearms, they'd have a bigger lead iver the original still 1&2 by miles compared to anything else ive ever played
tbh i like everything about the sequel more then the first game
i never found it complicated or clunky i could even turn off runners vision and know where to go
and the characters were quite good
I mean in that GeForce now leak it did had a RTX remaster mentioned and surprisingly they are reviving dead space and I think this franchise still has a chance and it may not see the light for some time cause dice is doing some stuff currently but maybe some other studio can pick it up and make something out it but yeah we'll see.
EA DOESN'T CARE ABOUT THIS IP NO MORE
I would love for the series to make a comeback.
This game need to be come back
This question made me wake up from being tired lol
1st is legendary while catalysts has better movement but a dead world
mirrors edge catalyst is better in my opinion. i like the fighting, the finishers, they just need to make the game longer, and able to double counter the guards.
Mirror's edge felt like one of those really cool dreams you accidentally wake up from and try to quickly fall back asleep to try and go back.
I literally got into parkour because of this game. A game made me exercise dammit!
I found the combat to be the best melee combat I've ever experienced in video games, it was a blast
dude seeing "financial district 1:58 pm" made me so nostalgic and sad. I miss the atmosphere of this game. It really feels like the atmosphere of real life when I would go downtown into the city as an 8 year old and look up at the big buildings and just have a feeling of peace and calm. I miss that shiit soooo much lol
The feeling of realizing yes you actually can make that jump was so amazing
Mirrors Edge needs a new game on Next-Gen only consoles. Imagine running through Glass at 60fps in 4K with beautiful graphics while a banger beat plays while you’re running. I wouldn’t even care if the game doesn’t do anything new to the formula. I just want a next-Gen Mirrors Edge
Yo I’m so happy people are still talking about this game cause I haven’t heard of it in such a long time and it’s just an nostalgic game.
I finished the original Mirror's Edge for the first time today on my Xbox Series S via EA Play and found it a great game overall
Great video Gamingbolt!
Original mirrors edge is still one of my favorite games ever. The open world concept of the 2nd one just didn't work. It was too bland and all those beautiful linear runs that you tried to perfect just couldn't be replicated. What a letdown.
What happened is the second game didnt sell well sadly
ME1 runs on pretty much any modern low end machine it's fun for everyone, easy to get started too
the first seconds of the video gave me goosebumps, ME was one of my favourite game of all time ... the second game, not so much, it felt like it lost it's soul ... too bad
Catalyst feels like Mirror's edge but something is missing. I played them both recently for the first time so it isn't a nostalgia problem
the first mirrors edge was a masterpiece, a pillar of gaming and i'll never forget it
For some reason I feel like somehow mirrors edge will make a come back and it’s going to be amazing who knows maybe it’ll be like a fan game or something fan games are usually better than the originals anyways.
I finished it 17 times believe me or not, best game i ever played
I wish catalyst was better…I do admit the combat is better, altho still not like super in depth or anything. But it didn’t need to be. The open world really was the biggest thing that sucked. The story wasn’t great either. I would really like it if they made a true sequel to the original. Something like how dmc5 was a true sequel to dmc4.
Oh, the first one was a master piece, and it still holds up well
Dice just stated that "because of" their failure that is BF, Dice put everything else on hold including Mirrors Edge
I used to think it was the dogs bollocks tbh
I played both games some months ago to make a review for my channel. The original is still a very enjoyable experience, albeit short. Imho the parkour feels clunky compared to what more modern games have implemented, but it's obvious that they all drew inspiration from it and Assassin's Creed. Catalyst on the other hand improved on all aspects of the movement mechanics, but reaaaally screwed the pooch by making it open-world, particularly in that very uninspired and bland manner. It's a big shame because it has some very good-looking sceneries to admire, but if you experience any degree of open-world fatigue, Mirror's Edge Catalyst will feel like a big chore after a couple of hours into it.
it’s so underrated as everyone has mentioned, need a switch version of this:(
I got the collection which included both games and am playing it on my aya neo handheld pc 😏
I beta tested both games in the franchise on my PC and the games showed promise, but there's something about it that didn't click with many people.
I played the PS4 Version, is there any reason to go back and try the older one?
I personally never understood the hate that Catalyst got. I thought it was a huge improvement in all categories. Going back to the original, it felt way more jank and limiting. My only actual complaint about Catalyst was the open world. It wasn't really open, but rather a bunch of linear paths that intersect, with very little activities to do. Plus, there was usually only one or two set paths to get from one area to another. So you end up running the same routs over and over, making it feel really repetitive.
This game needed to be in 3rd person.
On the Nvidia leak, there was a Mirror's Edge RTX remaster and possibly a sequel to catalyst
Sorry for the ping it's barely related just you talking about time got me thinking hard on it lol
a new jet set radio just got announced so im still hoping mirrors edge might happen one day :p
Looking back on this, this reminds me of apex. They definitely could do so much with the movement if they ever reboot.
I tried playing the second one and couldn’t even get over the tutorial. Not my cup of tea but hey the world doesn’t revolve around me
I honestly liked the combat and freeroam of catalyst but the story was meh
@@YaBoyRascal good for u. I most play third person games. Destiny 2 and Cod are the exceptions when it comes to first person shooters
@@yourfriendlyneighborhoodca9576 have your tried Infamous? The parkour is pretty good in that series
I think parkour in prototype is better
@@YaBoyRascal yeah. I played Infamous Second Son and First Light. Pretty good games
i hope we get another one for current gen only
Just bought this game. Cant wait to play it.
This game is one of the best games I've ever played.
Back when games were for people with hand eye coordination
It wasnt a blockbuster to rival call of duty so of course the studios fucked it.
One of my favorite games of all time
Breaks my heart how the sequel went. Should have never been open world.
