This is a great example when you work hard for many hours to deliver high quality content for the audience and UA-cam doesn't care. TikTok , ASMR and other dumb humor is what's popular nowadays
This game was absolutely amazing. I loved it so much. I even went back to it several years, as I just felt like it drew me back to it whenever summer started.
I used to try and attempt to break the camera in this game a long time ago because I just loved it so much, but didn't have the full knowledge to be able to. It makes me so happy to see you've made a video about it because it's just so dear to me! It was lovely to see stuff behind the scenes.
Thanks PinkClaudia35, Glad you enjoyed it. If you do want to try it out again. I've pinned a comment by BoffinBrain who did the camera work. It links to where he got the camera from.
That skydome is fantastic. I only noticed it in my most recent playthrough (after 55 or so hours) when messing with the FOV with hotkeys. This video is fantastic and thank you and Boffin Brain for showing me a lot more of my favorite game.
2:30 it actually looks like they may have originally intended for the billboard to be slightly more to the left so that Celeste runs out from behind it, because if the billboard wasn't there at all then you would be able to see Celeste spawn in from nowhere, but at some point it got moved further right by someone who was unaware that it needed to be placed in a specific spot because of Celeste's animation
I find it fascinating that there were two explosions from the helicopter in the final scene, despite the fact that only one of them is visible from the first person perspective
A lot of interesting game design decisions are shown in this video! Also, how come I'd never heard about interrogation room easter egg? I wish Mirror's Edge: Catalyst was better :(
@@andreyfurdick9425 Kinda hard to explain. It didn't have this vibe you get from playing the first game even today. I feel like the first game was made by a small studio with soul and the Catalyst was mad by a big company just to make money off franchise. That's the feel I get. Also the I feel like the level design has got worse because they tried to make the game open-world and made some sacrifices. I just wanted the Catalyst to be similar to the first game but open-world.
@@Kokurorokuko Also the parkour mechanics were a little more catered towards "instant now" and lost the feel of the original which gave you a more realistic look.
@@Kokurorokuko there are so many things wrong with Catalyst. It's story, characters, skill tree, etc. but it was still made by a small (not really) studio with soul. It's there, just beneath all the things EA forced into the game. It's just as beautiful as the first to me, and the atmosphere + city in both games is what I mainly admire. The soundtrack in Catalyst is also definitely on-par with the first for me.
It sure is! Thanks... but I'm just the dude that did the grunt work to gather the footage. The real thanks should go to volunteers like btbd for making the multiplayer mod, which has all the tools necessary to take the camera anywhere.
Very interesting video. As a game developer myself, it's quite eyeopening to see how Dice handle the gameflow in games. Especially that train dynamic and static switching, it might sounds unreliable with game engine physics but carried out perfect to give seemless feeling in game.
It's a shame that you put so much effort and work into this than what other people would do (just regurgitate commonly known things and not include anything new) and barely get any recognition. I totally understand why you're done with the series and hope future projects work out better for you :)
I almost want to go back and play Mirror's Edge with its fun parkour and clean style, but then I remember the truly awful gunplay, enemies with laser-like aim and wonky CQC. So frustrating.
It's unfortunate that Catalyst went the open world route. I always felt like that was the reason I didn't like it as much as the original. I just couldn't get around the city without constantly getting lost - and I didn't want to resort to runner vision. Catalyst was, movement- and combat-wise the better game and the few sections that force you down a tunnel is where the game was at its best. Like for example, when you enter the Ocean View District and run from the very top to the bottom, through rooftop gardens and penthouse balconies down to the harbor. The first time you get there was literally the one part that saved the game for me. The first one was able to produce a way better flow due to the linearity of the maps.
@@Skyfox94 I haven't played Catalyst but I've watched playthroughs. I agree with you about moving to an open world design. Linear level design (with multiple routes) is best for Mirror's Edge. That's the reason why the time trial maps were so popular. The combat in Catalyst didn't look much better than in the first game. And locking movements and combos was the wrong move IMO. If DICE ever make a sequel to Catalyst, then I hope the game is paired back and returned to its more linear routes. And either borrow the gunplay from Battlefield or remove it entirely.
@@mcrazza The combat feels a lot better than it looks - at least in my opinion but I agree - locking things like the roll or faster climbing speeds behind upgrades was dumb. Though you get the most important ones by the midgame if you care - so it's less bad than one would imagine. Also you can NG+ it with all your upgrades - not that that excuses any of it but it's at least something. Couldn't agree more with you though.
I certainly won't defend it on those points! But I still love the music and the aesthetics that totally make up for those shortcomings. The easy difficulty makes you take far less damage and there are plenty of checkpoints so you shouldn't find it too stressful to play through again.
Yes, sort-of true... I know the final elevator to the security room half-cheats by popping out of the lower Shard walls due to the way the building is shaped. I can totally understand why they'd do that purely for ease of development, since you don't see the external walls at that point. There are also some places where playable areas intersect with skybox buildings if you stream in all the level areas at once, but of course that won't happen during real gameplay.
