I think if the BBC didn't rely on intimidation tactics for the licensing fee and didn't do things like support past, present and future Jimmy Savilles, people might not reject the license as much as they do. As for myself, I just don't watch live TV or anything BBC.
Should people running this country have to obtain a license, I think a high percentage would or could not qualify, as an engineer I have to sit theory exams and do practical tests to obtain a license maybe it's time to update our system to test our MP's and remove those that fail. Sweden has replaced the TV licence with a tax that everyone have to pay. It doesn't matter if you watch TV or listen to radio at all. If you have a taxable income you have to pay. I wouldn't consider that an improvement.
TV licencing uptake is right on the tipping point where it is becoming unsustainable to enforce those ignoring it. How many letters are they sending out every month that go straight in the bin? How much does that cost them? By 2026 it will become plainly obvious that the ONLY way it can survive is to move to a subscription model.
Turn it into a subscription charge, if you want it, you pay for it, if you don't want it, don't pay for it......... it is an outdated system that needs bringing up to date....
If the BBC genuinely believed that it would survive/prosper with a subscription model of funding rather than a licence model it would happily adopt the subscription model.

The licence fee has to be scrapped. The BBC being the sole beneficiary is wrong. The BBC wastes money, does not provide quality programs and of the four main channels two don't operate until 7pm. It pays presenters like the awful linneaker an obscene amount of money for what? It has produced the disgusting Saville and Edwards to name a couple and worst of all knew what was going on and did nothing. We are not in the 30's anymore when there was a need to fund broadcasting via TV licencing. Scrap the licence and if the appalling BBC is to continue it should fund itself.
Licence and License - Licence is the noun: We bought a TV licence. License is the verb: We are licensed to use the TV. We have a licence from TV Licensing. I have a driving licence. I am licensed to drive. I got it from Vehicle Licensing, who issue the licences.
Americans find the UK TV license odd because it's mandatory, even for those who don't watch BBC content. Unlike in the U.S., where people pay only for services they choose, the TV license feels restrictive. Enforcement with fines or jail also seems excessive, and many see it as outdated in a world dominated by streaming. Public broadcasting in the U.S. relies on donations, not mandatory fees, which better aligns with consumer freedom.
Crapita, who run the BBC licence scheme, essentially accuse anyone who says they have no licence as a liar. The licence fee and the way live over the air TV content is transmitted is archaic and unnecessary. We live in a modern world and should be able to watch content when we want and in many cases pay for that privilege. The BBC should fund itself via selling content through subscription. The unwarranted tax is a detriment to the poorer end of the pay scale such as pensioners, students and so on. The fact that you can be fined a lot of moeny (and in the past jailed)for not having a TV licence while watching live broadcasts, which again affect the poor and vulnerable, is abhorrent as being jailed for 2 years for a tweet on X! Modern living, who would believe Orwell predicted this!
We in AUS got rid of that stupid Licence Fee system back in the 1960's Totally bureaucratic and unnecessary; our ABC is just funded out of general govt revenue. They do a fair bit of marketing too, and sell a lot of your stuff as well as their own !
Quite a few years ago I went to a Question Time recording and Billy Cotton Jnr was doing a kind of warm up talking about the licence fee. I had to agree to his arguments then that if the BBC went to advertising the ITV and Channel 4 (was no 5) would have to compete on price and everyone would start to lose out. However, with so many channels now accepting low-cost advertising, that has happened and ITV is as rubbish as everything else. So 'Cry havoc and let loose the dogs of war.' Let them all fight for it.
Today the “licence fee” is a grossly distortion of competition in favour of a single broadcaster. Why does none of the revenue got to other free to air services? The BBC has a massive legacy of intellectual property that can be licensed by to broadcasters. Time to abolish the licence fee and make the BBC self fund itself commercially.
I don't possess a TV and have no interest in watching that rubbish, nor am I interested in the 90% of the news which is about the petty squabbles of celebrities I've never watched in programmes I've never heard of rather than real events about which if they do report them they are lying anyway. Why should I pay for a service I don't want or use? Why is there an assumption that everybody watches television? We're not all morons.
You will be amazed at how complicated crooked the BBC is. Where do you think all old programs have been sold, the off shoots of the BBC. Franchise the BBC out or sell it after you have sold all the buildings.
I have not had a licence for years now, and I always make sure that I make this declaration online as soon as I receive an email from the BBC to confirm that I still do not need one. So far I have never been bothered by anyone knocking at my door.
The system is very fair to those that understand this; If you do not engage with goons they are powerless and thus you never have to pay the licence fee.
The BBC overseas services carry advertisements.. If they broadcast here you get something that plays over said advertisements so you don't see them here. If they did show them here it would give the game away so they have to ghost them .If you see BBC world news, they will have musical interludes. That is when overseas viewers are receiving ads. It's a complete con.
I gave up my licence a few months ago, I don't watch the BBC, i player C4 or any live shows/ programs of any sort on ANY channel the BBC are a national disgrace and are so biased and away with the faries. It's an institution that needs defending.
To have TV vans searching for non payers, TV tax police going to homes harassing people, TV tax to punish people with a 1000 pound fine for non payment, to be taken to court, etc is STASI like and a waste of resources. Why doesn't the money just come from tax dollars like in USA, Australia, Canada etc? In the USA public tv and public radio also seek and get donations from people and foundations.
As I understood it, the Post Office was given a monopoly (and thereby control) over Post, then telegraph, then telephone, then radio and finally TV. All involve information going from one premises to another.
I will be furious if they added it to council tax, if it's added to employee tax then that doesn't affect me. So far they've just mentioned "general taxation", I don't understand what is meant by that?
I'm getting sick of them sending letters. I told them we don't watch live TV and now they just keep sending them it's harrassment. Is there a way to completely stop them?
I wouldn't care so much if it was just for BBC stuff rather than all live channels like it should be, but they know they'll fail instantly that way because they are shit.
If you think about the big picture the cost per year isn't terrible if it was just for access to all the BBC stuff without any adverts, it's all the forceful ness of it trying to cover things it shouldn't etc that puts people off more.
It all went tits up went the BBC became so darn political and woke. From that moment on, when they lost the support of the general public, it turned to a shower of sh.... I do not agree with it being a criminal act not to have one, that needs to be immediately addressed and cancelled as that is grossly wrong and they should not have been allowed to stop it for pensioners either!
Both myself and my neighbour had a combined harassment of about 3 years even though we each HAD a license then. We kept phoning, BBC Licensing kept agreeing that they had our licenses registered....but still the threats kept coming.
Worth noting that when the House of Lords explored alternatives to the TV Licence Fee, they were against general taxation. However, they were supportive of a household levy on council tax. This would allow for discounts to be applied, such as single occupancy and those with SMIs. The collection and enforcement of it would also be covered by the existing council tax system. I believe they were also broadly supportive of a levy on broadband, though that had more issues/concerns. Replying on advertising is a non-starter, as it would be strongly opposed by all commercial TV channels. Subscription was also ruled out, not least as the government likes a bit of soft power, which the BBC brings particularly via the World Service.
Lords report: committees.parliament.uk/publications/23091/documents/169130/default/ Chapter 4 (paragraph 88) lists European countries that have abolished the licence fee, and states what it has been replaced with. Paragraphs 131 to 136 cover the household levy alternative. Hopefully, the current Labour government will take note of this report when making its decisions.

I really used to like the idea of the BBC when it was impartial. Sometimes it's easy to forget the benefits. In the USA for example, if there was a guest that talked about subjects an advertiser didn't like they would threaten to withdraw their sponsorship if the guest was allowed to say certain things. I've just realised, that's a bit like UA-cam. It's great that's it's free but a lot of opinions are not allowed. If you want to hear free opinions you have to pay for it. The BBC in it's current state doesn't deserve any money though

Scrapping that tax that people CAN get out of, means they want to tax everyone and the BBC’s budget will rise exponentially as their buddies in power try to keep brainwashing the muppets in our society and around the world
🏴🇬🇧🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
You still use a TV aerial ??
There is. If you look at the terms on their website. You don't need a licence if you don't watch live broadcast TV or access the iPlayer. Alternatively, get rid of the TV.
It wouldn't surprise me if this government doesn't allow us to opt out. They see it as acceptable If they can gain an advantage from something that is morally wrong.
@ No, I use Sky Q for every channel I watch. I don’t watch anything on any BBC channel.
Why was the license free for over 75s and then this benefit was taken away like my winter fuel allowance, our political system is broken.
I think the BBC should get revenue from advertising rather than subscription, like the other commercial channels
The law clearly doesn't apply to TVL, deliberately causing harassment, alarm and distress, especially to vulnerable people.

I think as I recall France has abolished their TV licence... but put it on council tax instead....so they still have to pay.
There’s still too many repeats on the BBC paying for something we have already paid for 🤦♂️🤦♂️
It always annoyed me in the music industry. You'd buy a vinyl 45, then buy a vinyl LP with the same track, then buy a Cassette, then a CD, then a download. Each time You'd pay full price for the music and the medium but you'd already paid the copyright it was just new format to play on the latest kit or in your car.
Why do you have to pay the copyright for the same recording multiple times.
I haven't watched the BBC or much of any UK stations for many years, mainly because of pure poor quality content and msm bias. This should be a subscription service imo.
500k people cancelled the tv licence tax last year.
500k cancelled their tv license 20 million+ just don’t pay , that’s a lot of “ love “ letters they have to send out each month !
15yrs not paid a penny and I'll never pay again.
you might if Lisa Nandy gets her way, shes looking to get BBC funding out of general taxation!!
I gave up tv for 3 months to get on with other things. That was 12 years ago, I never watched it again.
Bully Boy Cartel
No that's not correct the BBC and Capita are a MAFIA GANG. who are beyond the law. untouchable
No interview required, no qualifications required, very disturbing.
As a pensioner I refused to pay the license I find much more on u tube that meets my needs, I've disconnect the Ariel, the bbc is rubbish🤮
I agree , I am a pensioner at the end of this month ! 👍☺
Yep, I decided to pay my tv license money to youtube instead.
but if you watch any form of live tv, you could be charged.......

@daddad8707 if the Government continues down the path of indoctrinating children into LGBT+ and Woke ideals, then yes I would say it's unfair
No license in Spain. All channels depend on advertising as there is NO national TV network.
Televisión Española ?
I remember a couple of years ago the TV licence letter even tried to claim that watching a livestream on UA-cam counted, even if the stream was coming from another country. I thought that was a bit of a stretch of logic there even for them
Sweden has replaced the TV licence with a tax that everyone have to pay.
When the charter is up for renewal in 2027, labour is trying to get the BBC funded out of general taxation!
How many pay the tv licence in the migrant hotels?
None of them, your taxes pay

Turn it into a subscription charge, if you want it, you pay for it, if you don't want it, don't pay for it......... it is an outdated system that needs bringing up to date....
If the BBC genuinely believed that it would survive/prosper with a subscription model of funding rather than a licence model it would happily adopt the subscription model.
Please can we understand that broadcasting is not the same technology as data packet-streaming.

Licence and License -
Licence is the noun: We bought a TV licence.
Their latest letter to me says that while I can go to their website and make a declaration that I don't need a licence, but they will still want to make a "quick check" to confirm. What happened to innocent until proven guilty?
I've declared no licence once.
That's enough.
Never contact capita/BBC to tell them you dont need a licence!!! This authorises them to keep your details. Simply cancel your direct debit, thats it!!!!!
@@robtheplod That's what I did, ignored them, but they send me a letter every couple of weeks and have sent an "investigator" round once. I don't have a TV, and don't want one either.

Does the BBC make people outside the UK have a licence even though the BBC makes special problems for them paid for by us. Sounds normal nowadays.
I want to see the BBC go to another country and set up capita to obtain more from there country population. I really want to see what happens.
the stupid people who Pay for the TV licence, Pay for TV shows that earn money in other countries yet the profits from these shows go into some one else pocket
nope, just gullible UK citizens who pay their licence....
Ban the tv licence and BBC.
Been 15 years since I've had a licence.
I got rid of my TV at the same time. Was never a huge fan.
Thanks Daniel.
I withdrew their implied right to come to my house. That got rid of them. It's a legal term too.

Wow that's a massive sweeping statement about the TV quality.
I bet you wipe from back to front. 😂
You will be amazed at how complicated crooked the BBC is. Where do you think all old programs have been sold, the off shoots of the BBC.
Franchise the BBC out or sell it after you have sold all the buildings.
Make them stop forcing their signal into homes that don't want it... make it a box if you want to get their signal.
I'd rather watch unbiased TV even if I have to watch adverts.
I have not had a licence for years now, and I always make sure that I make this declaration online as soon as I receive an email from the BBC to confirm that I still do not need one. So far I have never been bothered by anyone knocking at my door.
Where's the fun in that? Better not to tell them so they have to waste time chasing you. Do what ever you can to deplete the BBC.
You do realise by contacting the BBC every 2 years you are giving them authority to keep your details?
The system is very fair to those that understand this;
If you do not engage with goons they are powerless and thus you never have to pay the licence fee.
They will covert it to a tax. So everyone pays whether you use it or not !
lisa nandy is looking at that option now!
i feel i am preached to whenever watching the BBC an I have to pay for it, not for much longer

Cannot tell what you are trying to say.
I will be furious if they added it to council tax, if it's added to employee tax then that doesn't affect me. So far they've just mentioned "general taxation", I don't understand what is meant by that?
In the US we don't pay a licensing fee, as far as I know.
But IS NOT used for the roads, it was absorbed into general taxation and the roads are the worse for it !!
Exactly! Hence the poor state of British roads!
It seems to me that the STATE BROADCASTING SERVICE here in the UK has changed into the STATE PROPAGANDA MACHINE.
To quote an episode of not the nine o'clock news...
"I think the BBC is a load of crap"
100% well said
If the BBC is publicly funded then it shouldn't be politicized.
Unless it represents the views of the general public I guess.
Both myself and my neighbour had a combined harassment of about 3 years even though we each HAD a license then. We kept phoning, BBC Licensing kept agreeing that they had our licenses registered....but still the threats kept coming.
Anything the government runs, turns out being for the workers and not the customers, and the integrity and quality evaporates.
Just like the National Lottery is run by companies that bid for it, the state broadcaster role should be put out to tender.
Stayed in a hotel recently and watched TV for the better part of three days solid (no decent internet). It was absolutely shite.
ok, so on day one you'd discover that, yet continued on day 2 and 3... interesting!
Lords report: committees.parliament.uk/publications/23091/documents/169130/default/
Chapter 4 (paragraph 88) lists European countries that have abolished the licence fee, and states what it has been replaced with.

They should not include radio as you do not need a license to listen to the radio anymore.
