Awesome video. I'm new in the coral hobby and just soaking information right now and eventually would have a tank like yours. What corals are easy to care for beginners?
Omar Cadenas thanks Omar. Mushrooms are really easy and so are hammers and torches if you get decent lights. Birdsnest corals are also fairly robust if you have desert light

you heard correctly, 0.2 to 0.3 ppm (not 0.03 or 0.04)... i know that is considered 'really high' and perhaps catastrophically high by some. But, i let my phosphates rise above 0.1 ppm when i was battling DINOs, they stayed at between 0.2 and 0.3 for about 4 month, and went as high as 0.4 ppm for one week. Nitrates where around 10 ppm; my SPS looked great!!! I've since started growing chaeto in my fuge, and my nitrates are about 2.5 ppm and my phosphates are 0.1 ppm now.
yeah coral naming in the hobby is not an exact science! i always thought that reverse superman is red with blue polyps, not pink with blue polyps, but i've never seen one in person, so i can't comment. I am fairly certain that mine was sold as 'pink mystic' and it is indeed pink when you see it in person.
Awesome video Amro....May i ask when you started adding some of those acros exactly after how long you started adding them once your tank cycled? I am now in my 4th month and want to start adding acros...i do have pink Cadillac, the miyagi electric tort (from u) which are showing good signs of growth....thanks..
Ash I added the first acros a couple of weeks after starting the tank... I cycled the dry rock in a brute garbage container and I moved a couple of bits of life rock from my nano when I started the reefer. I had not detectable ammonia or nitrite 2 days after running water and I can tell that critters on the life rock where still alive so I added the fish right away and the acros a week later
Amazing growth! I have my acros for a year now and all those suckers do is encrust! Did you notice a growth increase by dimming blues and increasing red and green for a fraction of the day?
Oh ok I must have gotten confused with the spectrum change that you mentioned in a lighting video when you watch the tank. I want to try lower kelvin lighting with LEDs to test acro growth. With metal halides the lower K bulbs made a worlds difference in growth
Matyas Castro somebody did an experiment with running all blues, sps ab+ vs full spectrum lights and found no diff in coloration / growth... I think it was posted on ecotech’s channel
Kelly's Reef thanks Kelly! All info on dosing can be found here ua-cam.com/video/VzZzjvu2Gds/v-deo.html briefly, I dose kalkwasser via ato, then supplement with Redsea’s Alk / Ca / Mg buffers. I also occasionally dose potassium nitrate and phosphorus to maintain nitrate and phosphate levels
Great video! Btw, when did u introduce ur first sps in your tank? Soon after the cycling or waited for 5-6 months..? If you can share, it will help in setting up sps tank of mine! Thanks..
Hi Salman. good luck with your tank. I seeded my tank with live rock from my nano. i didn't really have to wait for the nitrogen cycle to establish (because of the bio filter provided by the live rocks). I added a few SPS a few weeks after tank startup
i should add that if you have any nuisance pests in your nano, then obviously you may want to start with dry rocks. Also test your new system with a couple of cheap SPS frags first
Sure! Will do that! But we in India don't have much choice about selecting corals. Plus nothing n sps is cheap. Least would be a 40$ frag. Corals are banned here in India ! Not even maricultured are allowed to be kept. Some rules they have set! They themselves need some awareness on this stuff.. Well, will surely update. I have coralline algae growing on my equipment though.. Should that be a good sign?
TrulyTanked this Tort was mislabeled as Cali Tort from a LFS that typically imports wild colonies. So not exactly sure what it is ; I cal it miyagi because it’s the closest thing based on pics
actually, you hear correctly 0.2 to 0.3, although now my levels are between 0.15 to 0.2 ppm (measured by hanna ULR checker). I know this sounds really high based on the 'wisdom' of keeping nitrates and phosphates near zero. But in my tank, and many others, these levels don't seem to cause issues or noticeable algae in the display
That is great! I was just going on articles like this one that seem to indicate that calcification, or growth, would be strongly inhibited with high phosphate levels. reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-09/rhf/index.php however, your growth looks great so obviously there is more to it than just a phosphate number! Cheers.
yeah, i've read Randy's articles... and also read the peer-reviewed literature that he cites (the manipulative experiments that elevated nitrates and phosphates and documented reduction in growth)... i have a few ideas of why perhaps we should expect a 1:1 extrapolation from increasing nutrients in the great barrier reef to our reef tank. 1) all other factors are not equal; so possibly, high nitrates and phosphates can be tolerated at higher that NSW alkalinity / calcium, etc. 2) Most of my SPS have been in aquaculutre for a while; perhaps they adapted. its commonly assumed that wild colonies are more finicky to keep than the 'named' acros that have been in tanks for 20 years or so; perhaps there was an acclimation / artificial selection that has allowed some corals to tolerate high nutrient conditions. Either way, according to 'theory', my tank should be full of algae and show low-no growth... but it doesn't. why? is my tank unique in some way, or is it perhaps that the theory is not all worked out yet.... thanks for your comments by the way, i appreciate thoughtful discussions! cheers!
You reefers are going to be the end of me. Lol. Making me want to swap up my empty freshwater tanks to salt so i can get some frags. Gonna turn me into a "frag freak".
my cali blue tort looks exactly like yours except one thing, it has an underlying green to it in certain blues and violet light. do you experience the same thing?
Its interesting the difference 4 years has made. There are no more 'run of the mill' corals or fish. Every pencil eraser frag for 60 dollars is now special. 10 years ago I thought that the supply chain was unlimited.
You can still get a few things for $20 to $30. You typically get better deals from home reefers vs LFS, but I think some of price increases are justified. It’s expensive to run a reef and the costs of electricity and reagents are always increasing. So it make sense for the frag prices to also increase. The vast majority of reefers sell frags as a cost recovery mechanism for their expensive reefs. Just my thoughts!
Most of the time, i use the TLF putty. But i just tried the DD putty and i've been liking it a bit better. It tends to stay pliable for a longer period, giving you more time to use the product. The DD putty does give off a lot of residue when in the water relative to TLF however
