  • We've put a lot of hours and a lot of miles on the 250 XC. It's time to talk about what a great package these bikes are. Many of our viewers may overlook this bike thinking that they need a 300, but we discuss how this might be a perfect fit for many riders at a cheaper price. The 250 XC is one of our favorite bikes.

    I own a 2011 250 EXC fantastic bike. I ride hard enduro, Motocross, Trails, the only thing I change when I change from MX to Enduro is open up the Compression front and rear by 10 clicks.

      +Dirt Bike Channel hey its me the 4 stroke fan :P haha i do miss 2stroke and i have never rode the ktm 300 enduro was wondering if you rock a 2 stroke KTM for the trail why not have a 250 sx ? I myself ride mostly in trails/moutians loging roads but i used a motro cross bike more so cuz i find them more powerfull even thought they might not be "built" for that like i upgrad it with kick stand / light ect just wondering your thoughts on the KTM 250 SX vs the KTM 250 XC or the 300 XC are the KTM 250 SX not faster off the start ?

    • @vivalaphill
      @vivalaphill 8 років тому

      savagex466 the 250 SX engin is almost identical to the xc and exc engine. it might be a bit more rev happy and aggressive but that is mainly due to tuning.

    I have a 2006 250 XC and I don’t know who would complain about the range, unless you were desert riding. I ride enduro mostly and I have never even came close to running out of fuel. Even after a full day of riding.

    I love my 2012 250xc! I got it brand new for $6930 out the door and couldn't be happier. I just got my suspension revalved and resprung for my weight and it's absolutely amazing now. I don't see why people complain about KTM suspension, different strokes I guess.

    Great Video Gentlemen!!! Thank You very much. I feel anything that you guys do to promote 2 Stroke Motorcycles is Fantastic!!!! I will not ride a 4 Stroke! Or should I say "Own a 4 Stroke" I have ridden them and they do seem more comfortable and easier to ride. But when they go (blow up, seize, etc) they really smoke your wallet!!!! I live out here in Eastern NC. and I was at the local track with my bike (2004 KX-500) and some Marines came up to me and were commenting that they too would not own a 4 stroke.! That they like the simplicity of the 2 and especially the KTM 250. Anyways thanks again and God Bless.

    2012 250xc is my first real dirt bike and 2stroke, threw on a flywheel weight, G2 throttle tamer and Gnarly pipe, fatter jetting and set the ignition map to mild and its been an amazing bike to progress on. Even while down tuned its enough to get into trouble, but otherwise has allowed me to ride faster and tackle pretty much anything the seasoned guys have shown me. And totally right about the price thing, was initially looking for a 200 or 300, but the 250 seems to be under appreciated and did come around as a steal. Tried a buddies 250xcf and can't see why it could be favored over the 2t, feels more difficult to ride slow or fast in comparison, and definitely not as fun.....2 stroke bias forever lol....

    I've only owned 4T's so far, went to the KTM 16 ride day the other month to try the 250/350 XCF, when there, the rep really wanted everyone to try their full range. Which was a great call, didn't take to the XCF as much as I thought I would, but man, did I like the 250XC, for track, think I'd stick to my R, but for trail's, when it's time to say goodbye to my X, think I'll go 2T, and the 250 over the 300, 300 was a little much. And now with the help of your video I know I can upgrade it to a 300 dead easy if I ever wanted too....sweet!

      @DirtBikeChannel  8 років тому +1

      +Dean Smith Isn't that funny! You thought you were a 4 stroke man, but after testing out a 2T at a KTM ride day, your testimony of 4 strokes has been shaken :) You may become a smoker after all! I Love your comment (and honesty) more than any comment I've had in a long time!

    I honestly am in love with my 250 xc. Almost bought bought a 300 like a lot of people but I'm glad I got the 250 because of how fast it revs and hits the pipe almost instantaneously where on the 300 it takes a lot of work to hit that power

    • @aridinglifestyle4142
      @aridinglifestyle4142 9 років тому

      But that down low pull on the 300 is almost unbeatable

    Another thing you guys should make a video is for the newest KTM 200. We used to own a 2008 KTM 200xc and I think is one the BEST single trail bikes out there. Recently I help my best friend to buy one for his kid coming out of the KTM 144. I have to tell you guys I was super impressed with the progress KTM put on the little bike. Incredible power from the bottom to the top and easy to flick around (too easy.... ;-)) Forgot to mention now the KTM 200xcw comes with electric start. No that needs one but that is a bonus for some difficult situations on the trail. I tough the electric start will add a ridiculous amount of weight on the bike affecting the handling, but honestly I didn't felt any differences on weight or performance compare of our old and trusty 2008 KTM 200xc.... Sorry to carry on so deep in the 200 but I guess we LOVE KTM's two strokes!!!!! RIDE ON!!

    Hands down the KTM 250xc is just an absolutely great bike. I own a 2012 KTM 300xc and my kid race the 2011 KTM 250xc. I love my 300 but there is also something special and unique about the 250xc the make the bike easier to flick around with a faster rev compare of the 300. We ride/race in TX with a lot of rocky trails and I like better the PDS suspension due the no restrictions under the bike vs the linkage and the longer shock travel from the PDS works good over rocks/logs, etc.... Anyway the two bikes are great and the are also easy to set up for any kind of rider or terrain. RIDE ON!!
    Jerry

    Couldn't have said it better about the mileage situation. My YZ450, which is fuel injected went 77 miles before it ran out of gas in a desert race. Now, the first half of the race really sucked down the fuel due to being behind some competitors who were stuck and I had to really gas it to get around them.
    On a good day it'll get around 45mpg on nice single track with the sprockets I put on it. It's also fuel injected so it may get better mileage overall, but it's not some crazy difference.

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  9 років тому

      Gnarlington Thank you for sharing an honest example of your mileage!!! I hope the group sees this!

  • @qynsar
    @qynsar 8 років тому

    This comment is about the mileage. I have a Honda crf450x with a stock tank . I believe it's about 2 gallons . I can ride about 65 miles or so on that. Also I am really slow. So from your comments about fuel mileage there does not seem to me to be a huge difference. I have put an fmf power up carb kit on it and a block off kit with an fmf Q4 pipe. Other than that the engine is stock. It has boat loads of power.

    Such a good channel guys - love the vids. So the only real difference in XC and XC-W's are the suspension and wide-ratio transmission? Get an XC if you want stiffer suspension and want to go faster thru whoops and get an XC-W if you want more single track, rocky, technical stuff. Quick question - which one you guys think corners (the soft dirt stuff) better?

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  9 років тому

    Damn, I want this bike! First I was watching your 300 videos and was hung up between the XC and XC-W. But now I'm starting to realize that light weight is really the key for me to enjoy my tail riding. And the 250 is going to be plenty of power without a doubt. The added displacement in the 300 helps with torque. Idk if I should go new or not.. I do not like the idea of buying bikes new anymore, but there are very few KTMs in my area.. Maybe if I can find a leftover new bike at a dealer I could cut a nice deal.. Cheers from Tampa Bay, FL.

Which model should her be compared to? An XC or XC-W. What are the main differences from XC, XC-W, and EXC? I don't really have that much to gain in getting another bike right now, but I may switch to KTM since it maintained PDS suspension and that is a great feauture for extreme enduro and less maintenance costs.I'll look forward to your comments and advices. I found a fully rebuilt top and bottom end, 2003 kx250 that was done by my friends coworker who is mechanic, and a 2013 ktm 250xc. personally I only ride woods. even though the ktm costs $1000 more, which would be a better choice, spend $1000 more or put that money into parts to make the kx250 a woods bike?

      +Dirt Bike Channel yeah i feel like the 250 would be less of a hand full for a first trail 2stroke. Also having less of a "hit" of power would be easier to ride i think. Maybe once he has ridden his 300 for a while, doing a comparison of 300 vs 250 from his point of view. either way love the videos!

    • @dirtbikesam
      @dirtbikesam 8 років тому

      Yeah we probably should do a follow up video. The 250 does its best work higher in the RPM curve vs the 300. The 300 has a more tractor pull which makes it a bit better in the tight rocky slow sections. Over all I like the 300 a little better because of the tractor pull.

      yz250x is a little lighter, however it does not have, e-start, hydraulic clutch, larger tank (its has a 2 gallon i believe). It also only has 5 gears, where the later KTM models have 6 gear. So they yz is a little gappy at times. Although people rave about the yz suspension, saying its the best stock suspension out there, but its different for everyone.

    I'm all for two strokes but you guys need to compare some other bikes that aren't orange. Not everyone breathes orange. Up in new England the new off-road bike to have, is a yz250. You guys should consider trying some different colors. I had a ktm 200, I had an rm250, husqvarna 144, and now a yz 250. So far the ktm was my least favorite. I've now had 3 friends go buy new yz 250s because they loved mine. So again you should seriously consider trying other bikes off-road. I do love your channel by the way!

    On fuel usage. My 2015 300 XCW 6 Days with the same 2.6 gallon tank gets just over 40 mpg. That's slightly over 100 miles to empty and about 88 miles to reserve. How? I'm using a 36mm SmartCarb. My 2008 300 XCW with the 2.8 gallon tank gets about 42 mpg with the same carb, for a range to empty of about 117 miles, or about 100 miles to reserve. Just sayin'.

      Barry Jackson thanks for chiming in with this. Fuel mileage is also very dependent on terrain, trail conditions, and the rider.

    • @barryjackson9917
      @barryjackson9917 9 років тому

      Dirt Bike Channel Right. I should have noted that, so here goes. On the ride that yielded the 40 mpg reading it was about 70 degrees. The carb was dialed in at sea level and the ride took place at about 1200 to 3000 feet ASL. The trail is a combo of 25% fast fireroad, 25% mid-speed 2-track, 25% gnarly 2-track, and 25% single track hard, rocky ridge climb/descent. Trail ranged from dry to muddy gorp holes, but basically it was a dry ride with a couple of stream crossings. Distance was about 55 miles. I am old and slow, but this was a good day and I'd say I was riding at about a low to mid B class rider's speed. Hope that paints a better picture.

    Just wondering...I know zip about motor bikes but ride mountain bikes and was wondering why any off road fork would bottom out with as much travel these bikes have. I would think a good air spring would be perfect and get the impression they use coil which is heavier but more reliable and supple but air is much more easily adjutable and progressive and with so much travel plus being a much heavier machine than a bicycle stiction due to seal drag would be a non issue.
    What I am asking is why not use air springs? I would imagine it would be easy to have a plush fork without the klang from bottoming and as a bonus save several pounds in the process. I get spring for the rear because there is no need for an actual structure that a fork must have.

    • @brianh8484
      @brianh8484 8 років тому

      Air forks are out there. Some of the new 2017 KTM line up will come stock with them. A few of the Jap mx'ers come with them too.

    • @BoostedFB6
      @BoostedFB6 8 років тому

      It's a way better feel with the spring fork and they just perform way better but there are air forks out there but there are lots of complaints you don't get proper feeling of the terrain I also ride mountain bikes and I think it's the extra 200+ pounds that makes the fork perform different and also the higher speed in some spots

    • @schlooonginator1227
      @schlooonginator1227 8 років тому

      Mackenzie Ashford Interesting. The mountain bike scene went through the same thing. For a long time air sprung simply could not match coil for ride quality, mostly tracking but they would eventually get air spings to meet the performance of coil. Once that happened, the advantages of lighter weight and adjustability made coil a lower budget option..
      The main differance as I understand it is coil is linear whereas air is progressive and air has stiction issues at the seals for obvious reasons. Eventually they overcame these issues with optional "tokens" to occupy the air volume effecting the rate of progression and seals improved, regardless, I still think it would be hard to beat a tuned coil for tracking.
      Titanium make great light weight coils.

    • @BoostedFB6
      @BoostedFB6 8 років тому

      +schlooonginator yeah it's there has been recent air forks that have performed as well as spring but very few I think we are only a few years from seeing them everywhere
