I was on the College Program, and knew a guy who used to do VIP for Disney and I asked him for his best story, which can be best summarized this way: Shaq on Space Mountain. He was legit concerned he might be decapitated.
i realize i'm too late to this convo, but I just have to get my thought out there. The reason the bride scene is bad even though "that's what pirates do" is because Pirates isn't an educational ride or even a scary ride, it's a romanticizing pirate life fun ride. So in that context of "wow pirates are cool!" associating that with human trafficking and rape etc in turns make those subjects a joke. Also, it enforces the idea that it's okay to view women as objects to young kids in the audience, which in my opinion is irresponsible thing to show at a park that is supposed to be a fantastical utopia for kids. If it wasn't played as a joke or fantasizing about being a pirates, that would be a different story.
Man, you guys had me cracking up like crazy, all the while reminiscing about my trips to the Magic Kingdom, back in the 80s and 90s. This was a helluva fun podcast!
I remember hearing from my dad, way back when the court case first happened, was that the Tigger suit was going to be dyed yellow and have all the identifiable bits removed. I've always wondered if they actually did that, to protect Tigger's good name.
Agree 100% about Disneyland vs. WDW. I just took my 1st trip to Anaheim last week, and loved the intimate feel of Disneyland. And yes, I was SHOCKED at how small Sleeping Beauty's castle is!
I had someone sum up the different feels between disneyland and magic kingdom perfectly. Disneyland is your grandparents' house: a little small and older but full of warmth and heart. Magic Kingdom is your rich aunt/uncle's house: large and full of flashy things but a bit cold and static. Personally love Disneyland's versions of things, but Magic Kingdom has its own strengths as well
Man, this is so relevant to me right now. I'm working on a project bringing together all the histories of these outdated attractions and Carousel of Progress is a really interesting one. Thanks for having and sharing conversations about these rides.
Super late in hearing this podcast but Mystic Manor was the highlight of Hong Kong Disneyland for me, (went over the summer when I was an intern in Hong Kong) the themeing, the little kids who I shared a buggy with crying in fear, mystic point in general was my favorite themed area of that park (yes even compared to Toy Story Land). Have to admit there really isn't much in Hong Kong Disneyland yet and when I went they were renovating the castle.
What I like most about It's a Small World is that if you are a person visiting the Magic Kingdom from anywhere in the world you can experience some representation of your country or language in a welcoming way. I don't think it should go away.
Anyway, I want Stitch to be replaced with something Treasure Planet related. I know the movie didn't do so well, but it's getting a cult following on Tumblr, and it's coming back to the forefront I think. Or maybe I'm just a fangirl who really wants a Treasure Planet attraction.
Cait Cher Disney doesn't give a shit about it, never has or will, it was made by the guys who made black cauldron and green lit by the guy who left Disney to form dreamworks, disney opened it against Harry Potter, that shows how much they cared about it (Stich came out in the summer of the same year). It has as much chance coming back to the forfront as Atlantis, home on the range, or black cauldron. (Not happening)
Swagford95 I mean, you are not wrong. What you are saying is true, but out of Home on the Range and Black Cauldron, Treasure Planet was actually a pretty decent movie that sticks with Disney fans, including myself. Hunchback of Notre Dame had mixed reviews in the box office, but it’s been making a pretty big comeback ever since the evolution of the Internet. I believe there’s still a chance for movies that have potential and Treasure Planet had it.
PLEASE DO MORE PODCASTS LIKE THIS. I was listening while cleaning my house laughing so hard my roommates asked me what the matter was. Also PLEASE make "I'm not sold on the Dole" shirts I will absolutely buy one
I was expecting people in the comments to attack Kevin for not liking certain rides or not knowing where Dumbo is. I am pleasantly surprised, well done everyone. This podcast was hilarious
The final scene of Carousel of Progress should be updated. The family is still there, but everyone is staring at their smartphones. The kid's fingers are flying as they text, Grandpa looks confused, and occasionally curses and hits his phone, and Granny is wearing a GearVR headset and eventually falls over from dizziness. Otherwise, silence. Maybe they could get UA-cam as a sponsor, with the tagline, "Welcome to YOUR future."
The "don't sanitize history" argument makes no sense to me. It's Disney, Disney sanitizes everything; have you watched Pocahontas recently? You don't go to Disney parks to get an accurate history lesson. You get a watered down filtered version of what Disney handpicked from history. I'm so glad they're getting rid of the bride auction, it's such a gross demeaning scene. I don't want to think about women getting raped when I'm on vacation, or ever.
At the end of the day, Walt Disney himself did NOT want Pirates of the Caribbean sanitized. It's also worth pointing at the the paintings in the queue confirm that there were female pirates. Besides, the new scene is just bland.
I agree about the distracting clicking!! Did they always do that? The atmosphere in there is great though, yes! Hated "under new management" btw....messed with the show too much....
Jungle cruise is the best ride in all the parks and they it is great. Maybe I’m one of the few but it’s my dream to work as a skipper on juggle cruise because it’s one of the few rides cast actually get to interact with the audience. Keep it alive and hopefully the movie doesn’t ruin the ride
Absolutely loved this podcast! The playful banter between you two is so much fun to listen to. I recommend more podcasts in this format. And for the record, I highly enjoy your voice, Kevin. ;-)
I saw someone wearing a Defunctland T-shirt this summer when I was at Magic Kingdom and Universal Studios. Can’t remember which park but I remember thinking hum that looks interesting and then finding your channel.
I’m purposely restraining myself from reading up about the Tigger court case, purely because I can’t imagine how such a bizarre story would pan out and I’d hate to spoil your upcoming coverage!
When me and my sister were 5, and we went to Disney World, we went on Space Mountain and my sister started crying. There was a foreign man in the car with my mom and her and he was trying to calm her down, but he didn't speak English
The new redhead pirate animatronic is awesome, I wonder if Kevin changed his tune after he saw the update. I mean all they really did was change the banner and a couple lines, plus the adit ion of a great new original pirate. you still have the women chasing the pirates a few scenes later, I'd hardly call it sanitized. I'm sure parents appreciate not getting asked "what's a wench auction?" in the middle of their family vacation anymore.
A great podcast. You might want to change pictures every few minutes or have a constantly moving picture in order to avoid potential burn-in. That is for us viewers that watch this in their TV.
I love these podcasts!!! Would be interesting to do a video about the lawsuits and deaths at the Disney parks more in detail.. I know there’s a ton of videos regarding it but they basically just list the basic facts...
I'd replace Stich's Great Escape with an Avengers themed ride. Maybe a Stark Industries tech demo? That would deffinately fit the theme of tommorowland, as well as keep the circular seating.
My oldest son hates Space Mountain, too. We rode it once with the lights on and he’ll never ride it again. His little brothers pick on him constantly about this but he’s afraid his head will be chopped off.
I am mixed on the Pirates changes honestly, I like we are getting a female pirate, but at the same time, you are changing one of the most memorable scenes on the attraction. Also, any chance we are getting more info on cancelled Lego Dimensions stuff.
People Mover is my favorite! I love the inside of Space Mountain part - especially when the lights are on because it's broken... then again I am a sort of odd duck. *shrug* I hope it never dies, I love it and so do my kids.
I actually really liked the under new managment version, but i also loved that, unlike every other ride that gets updated, they left the classic version at disneyland, so you could get to see both. Sadly the Tiki room is no longer under new management due to a fire. a fire that oddly only destroyed the new manager animatronics. Some believe the fire was done intentionally, possible by some cast member because many of them hated the under new management version. very suspicious
Hey man! Love the podcast as usual! I heard in this that you sometimes need people to make music for your outros. As a music producer, I'd love to maybe talk to you about that! Anyway, keep up with the amazing work, always love to see people talk so passionately about what they enjoy!
I could listen to you two talk about this stuff for a long, loooooong time :) Disney Dan rules - the only reason I don't sub to his channel is that I just don't care that much for LEGOs (I also sub to way too many channels as is), but I definitely enjoy checking out his vids. You guys both rock. Great episode!
I just started watching this channel and I legitimately thought you were putting pictures of Brad Pitt up as a joke, for 5-6 episodes of Defunctland... I'm an idiot.
What are you talking about "the audience is gonna hate this"? Shame on anyone who hates this podcast =P Oh em gee, I know I'm probably insane, but I could just wallow in the nostalgia of listening to people wax about Disney World all day long =P
I actually don't care about the buy a bride thing like at all, but as a female human I understand seeing lady pirates in the ride would be really cool. I used to play pirates when i was little, so I think little girls would really get a kick out of seeing girl pirates.
Super late on this but yes, Space Mountain is terrifying! I thought I was the only one. I distinctly remember an older couple probably in their late 50s who were in line behind me and a friend when I was younger and they had the best time laughing at how scared I was.
Wow, Disney Dan TOTALLY sounds like David Goodman from the Family Guy staff who sounds like Ray Romano! WOW, two random people who have the exact same voice...! I've only been to the Magic Kingdom twice but I'm ALL about Frontierland and The Carousel of Progress!
i would've loved to see a video of mulan playing on the carousel of progress because i have so many questions about that... which scene it was in? was it playing super loud? was it through the actual speakers? did it stop the regular audio or was it playing over it? how did it even get there in the first place?
Don't fret about Tigger spooking you, Kevin. My mom's fiance let out the most undignified girly shriek I've heard and every rider proceeded to laugh themselves sick, us even more knowing it was him.
Ok Kevin i agree Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom is horrific, but as someone not into roller coasters I feel accomplished for riding it alone last time I was there. Disney Land how ever, that ride is totally awesome mind blowing and so different, not even the same ride. and the people mover broke down right when i was about to step into a car, so missed that peak into Space Mountain
@19:00 I don't know how or why, but when Kevin started talking about the Mulan soundtrack being played, I had a feeling that he was talking about that song! Creepy...
my family loves the Jungle Cruise the entire draw of it to us is just how outdated the jokes are a fun tradition we always do is pick a joke they might say and if they say it we laugh so hard trying to get the cast member to break character and when they break it's a lot of fun sometimes they don't say any of our jokes and some times they just say one so it's really awkward but it's a lot of fun and if it's updated I'm afraid that it'll become a bunch of internet jokes and just ruin the feeling of the ride (ginger snaps is the best joke)

NOOOOOO, SWISS FAMILY TREE HOUSE 🏠 ONE OF MY FAVORITES SINCE 7YO, PLEASE RECONSIDER you should go at night, near closing, but it's the whole story of it, the movie
Best podcast episode so far! 👍
the action park podcast was lit tho
Best comment about best podcast so far.
Disney Dan best comment to my comment
I'm Disney Dan and I approve this message!
Disney Dan subtle
Your laughing is hilarious!
I'm not Disney Dan and I approve this comment
Disney Dan what happened to the snow white ride in Disneyland u said the vultures were from there?
Cameron Ortega it’s now the princess meet and greet.
I am totally okay with like 3 hour podcasts Kevin. Hit me with that.
I was on the College Program, and knew a guy who used to do VIP for Disney and I asked him for his best story, which can be best summarized this way: Shaq on Space Mountain. He was legit concerned he might be decapitated.
Im 6'8" and I was always concerned that something would take my head off.

sXeblues thanks for listening!
Don't ever worry about time. Make as much long form stuff as you want. I'll watch it.
“Goodbye Jesus” 😂😂
Kookaburra the Koobaburra That part had me in tears!
Oh thank god, the Tigger case is coming soon. I can't wait to see the magical mystery behind this.
I remember hearing from my dad, way back when the court case first happened, was that the Tigger suit was going to be dyed yellow and have all the identifiable bits removed. I've always wondered if they actually did that, to protect Tigger's good name.

Hey, my question got on the podcast! Thanks for the Shout-Out, Kevin!
Coming from a self proclaimed wimp, I'm really confused by what scares you
You guys talked about nothing of substance and I loved it. I listen to your podcast at work and it makes office life much more bearable.
What I like most about It's a Small World is that if you are a person visiting the Magic Kingdom from anywhere in the world you can experience some representation of your country or language in a welcoming way. I don't think it should go away.
Out here in Japan they still have the pirates chasing the women in pirates of the Caribbean.
Yukendoit well the BIGGEST thing in Japan is one piece, so it makes sense
Yukendoit
Yeah, Japan sorta has a legitimate rape culture goin on.
How do you convey disgust as intense as this with mere words?
This is he only podcast I’ve listened to, where I started cracking up more than ten times.
The only thing more sanitized then Pirates of The Caribbean are Kevin’s curse words
Anyway, I want Stitch to be replaced with something Treasure Planet related. I know the movie didn't do so well, but it's getting a cult following on Tumblr, and it's coming back to the forefront I think. Or maybe I'm just a fangirl who really wants a Treasure Planet attraction.

As a Tiki Room nerd... It's "All the birds sing words and the flowers CROON" lol! As in sing!
And then you said it like 5 seconds later... haha!
Kevin dropping the clock is a great metaphor for what happened to this podcast
FINALLY Kevin will talk about the Tigger court case!! Love the podcast
The final scene of Carousel of Progress should be updated. The family is still there, but everyone is staring at their smartphones. I’d be first to admit every time I go on space mountain I have to fight the urge to put my arms up because I’m afraid I’ll lose a hand or something.
The idea of a method of torture using the soundtrack of "It's a Small World" to drive people insane literally made me spit a beverage.
Best pod cast yet!!! Great work and splash Mountain will return.
Jasin Mac thanks! Can’t wait for it to come back!

Ok but Kevin has the cutest voice ever? And the funniest sense of humor? This didn’t feel like an hour at all
When me and my sister were 5, and we went to Disney World, we went on Space Mountain and my sister started crying. There was a foreign man in the car with my mom and her and he was trying to calm her down, but he didn't speak English

We need a post podcast podcast!
yeah quit teasing us.
Omg! I love the people mover/space mountain part, cause you can wave at the other riders from either side. Those are two of my favorite rides too.
Lissette Acevedo kinda a dark topic, I’ve toyed with the idea.. will be covering lawsuits with Kevin soon though haha
I had a childhood crush on the redhead from the PotC auction scene. That's my main (albeit selfish) motivation for wanting it to be kept on the ride
She's still there. They only changed the audio up a bit. I believe they actually made her a bigger part.
Your comments of Under the Sea is spot on! They should’ve added a scene for the climax of the film
Oh my god, Disney Dan's laugh brings me so much joy!
Cait Cher :D
Splash Mountain just reopened this past weekend, it will be closed again in January - february 2018.
The Channel of Lego & More oh awesome!
I am mixed on the Pirates changes honestly, I like we are getting a female pirate, but at the same time, you are changing one of the most memorable scenes on the attraction.

Loved this! You guys sounded like you had so much fun!!
Bill and Ted excellent Halloween adventure come on who's with me this show is gone forever and I will never be forgotten
Space mountain is definitely the most terrifying attraction in Disney world. I have to close my eyes the whole time so I don't freak out!
I just started watching this channel and I legitimately thought you were putting pictures of Brad Pitt up as a joke, for 5-6 episodes of Defunctland... I'm an idiot.

Man, I forget just how different Disneyland and Magic Kingdom are. I didn't remember Autopia being Tomorrowland Speedway there.
Super late on this but yes, Space Mountain is terrifying! I thought I was the only one. I distinctly remember an older couple probably in their late 50s who were in line behind me and a friend when I was younger and they had the best time laughing at how scared I was.
Literally everything that scared Kevin scared the hell out of me when I went on the first time, i got laughed at a lot 😂
this podcast was Wildly entertaining, you two are so funny. I loved this!!
This honestly was interesting to listen to even though I haven't been to any Disney park since I was 7
kerra7 thanks for listening!
Disney Dan honestly I could listen to podcasts with you two talking about Disney stuff all day !
Space mountain has become more scary as I have grown old. My eye sight doesn't adjust to light as fast as it did as a kid. So the ride is much darker.
I needed to be in this room because I would have fought the MK is Better argument so hard!
Disney: we made a ride for children
Kevin: h o r r i f y i n g 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
Wow, Disney Dan TOTALLY sounds like David Goodman from the Family Guy staff who sounds like Ray Romano! WOW, two random people who have the exact same voice...! I've only been to the Magic Kingdom twice but I'm ALL about Frontierland and The Carousel of Progress!
i would've loved to see a video of mulan playing on the carousel of progress because i have so many questions about that...
which scene it was in? was it playing super loud? was it through the actual speakers? did it stop the regular audio or was it playing over it? how did it even get there in the first place?
Can you make a Defunctland episode about The Funtastic World of Hanna Barbara?
Don't fret about Tigger spooking you, Kevin. My mom's fiance let out the most undignified girly shriek I've heard and every rider proceeded to laugh themselves sick, us even more knowing it was him.
Ok Kevin i agree Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom is horrific, but as someone not into roller coasters I feel accomplished for riding it alone last time I was there. Disney Land how ever, that ride is totally awesome mind blowing and so different, not even the same ride.
and the people mover broke down right when i was about to step into a car, so missed that peak into Space Mountain
I’m 6”2’ and terrified every time I ride Space Mountain! I know I logically won’t hit the supports but try telling that to my anxiety!
ThatSasquatch You should see my pictue from the ride in 2015. The entryway music still made me cry out of sheer nostolgia tho.
you two should do musings on other parks too!
This was absolutely hilarious!
My sister: Tower of Terror
My brother-in-law: Mission: SPACE Orange
Kevin Perjurer: Space Mountain
Me: Haven't found mine yet
Andrew Thomas me: the walking trails at animal kingdom
Geez Dan is right, the Haunted Mansion hanging man is super gnarly looking.
You should do this for all the parks of Disney World and Disneyland too!
This was wonderful
can you please have offhand disney on
OMG that'd be fun
@19:00 I don't know how or why, but when Kevin started talking about the Mulan soundtrack being played, I had a feeling that he was talking about that song! Creepy...
did you know space mountain only goes less than 30 mph? it seems a lot faster bc of the dark and the projections, as well as strategically placed fans
Yes you are correct Haunted Mansion is the best ride ever. its been my favorite ever. I love it too.
Clay Ross BEST!
thank you!
The flowers CROON!
I remember back when there was a Kim Possible thingamajig at Disney World...
my family loves the Jungle Cruise the entire draw of it to us is just how outdated the jokes are a fun tradition we always do is pick a joke they might say and if they say it we laugh so hard trying to get the cast member to break character and when they break it's a lot of fun sometimes they don't say any of our jokes and some times they just say one so it's really awkward but it's a lot of fun and if it's updated I'm afraid that it'll become a bunch of internet jokes and just ruin the feeling of the ride (ginger snaps is the best joke)
We are to be referred to as Defuncty Bunch
I refuse to ever go on Space Mountain. I would die from panic.
44:06 I always assumed uncle remus was in it already as the bullfrog?
"Space ranger spin is not going to have major changes in the next ten years because it isn't related to any of the movies"
not too sure about this, now
Never been to disneyworld, but went to disneyland frequently. What the difference between the two?
The Gettysburg address takes 2-3 minutes to recite, max. And if its performance at the Hall of Presidents really is "uninspiring," then the voice actor was trying to mess it up.
Can you please do Bill and Ted's Excellent Halloween adventure
God, you should be more popular. A real hidden jem.
Brendan McGeen I’m gonna pretend you’re talking about me. Hahaha....
Disney Dan Why not both ;)
NOOOOOO, SWISS FAMILY TREE HOUSE 🏠 ONE OF MY FAVORITES SINCE 7YO, PLEASE RECONSIDER you should go at night, near closing, but it's the whole story of it, the movie
If you went in November, wasn't the Haunted Mansion in Nightmare Before Christmas mode? Or is that only in Disneyland?
+Defunctland can the next episode of defunctland be about big bad wolf from Busch gardens?
Since you've done body wars, could you do it's father, adventures through interspace
SMALL WORLD
IS
AWESOME!
but i respect your opinion, im just the person who sings the small world song when ever its stuck in my head XD
