Yeah, it's cool, active muscle input is required to keep your mouth shut. Dead bodies' mouths drop open (so does your mouth sometimes when you're asleep or unconscious).
Most funeral homes these days will insert a cord through the gums and out of the nose to tie the jaw & mouth closed. I’m interested to know how she morphed into that and what the cause and circumstance were.
Could be that - she was a rich woman - toothless because too much sweets, and that explains the weight, but bones did not deteriorate because she had some moderate physical activity and probably died young.
A recent study of her body suggests she was in her late 20's-early 30's at the time of death. The tooth loss can be a variety of reasons. The middle class also had access to sweets since the tax on sweets was lowered and more affordable.
Saw this at the museum. This is a great place to visit. If you get to Phila., PA, do plan a visit. It is in Center City, fairly close to the Big Major Attractions Liberty Bell, Indepenence Square, etc. I think you will be pleased. Best wishes to all.
@ESOTERICKPLAN not sure I understand Question? or if question was serious - its been generally believedthat the adipose tissue changes due to an long exposure to basic fluids while lying in place think of a nearly successful attempt to make lye soaps . Also they are saying Like tallow, or wax, or soap, because the tissue slightly resembles all of these items- to wash your hands after handling the body you would need to use - more / real (!?) soap
What I want them to find out is why is the "soap lady's" mouth wide open like that; I didn't think people could actually die with their mouths wide open like that (even when they were tortured to death). With that kind of expression, I don't want to imagine what happened to that poor woman at the time of death.
As other people have stated, it’s to do with the muscles etc during composition but also when bodies start to decompose, gases within the body tend to push things about a bit inside and quite often the tongue protrudes outwards which also causes the mouth to open :)
@ESOTERICKPLAN esp since with Universal Precautions the gloves and gown etc. create a barrier between skin to skin / tissue contact , which the M.E. removes after examination and clean-up !
My guess is that since it's a one time thing and they're not doing a lot(like hundreds) in a short time span, it's not enough to do anything to them. Doctors and dentists step out of the room bc they do the x-rays all the time and over time it would start to affect them c:
death 101 when a person dies, the whole body relaxes, including the mouth and other oraphisis. Some cultures do stitch the eyes or mouth shut, but often are left 'natural'. It's the same when a person naps, they relax and often the mouth is open, hence snoring occurs.
But when was she dated from? I know that historically in Britain women were often "gifted" false teeth as a wedding gift. So would have their teeth removed when they were getting married.
Do you have reliable sources on that? I’m an historian with a speciality in costume and culture, and I’ve never heard that. Considering how difficult making false teeth is (see George Washington) I think someone is pulling your leg.
@@helenchappell6502 I'm sure you'll find it if you look into it. It was more common more recently, but there was a trade in teeth that would be set in dentures. They'd literally pull teeth from the dead on the battlefield because the value of teeth was so high.
It has been 11 years why is this in my recommended

@@Sadimal I my knowledge of the period she lived in was zero but I was a bit close.
DuneDemon8 The age is death suggests she died in childbirth, fairly common at that time. Or diabetic, which could also explain the lack of teeth.

0:47 Check the two skulls on the lower right.. Both scary looking individuals!
RIP... unless you're soap lady.
Well, watching the story of leonarda the lady made soap with humans brought me here lol. Interesting nonetheless
I wouldn't wash my hands with her.

Great question!
@ESOTERICKPLAN - Esp since w/ Universal Precautions the gloves gown etc. worn by the M.E. would mean (s)he would never directly touch the body !
What I want them to find out is why is the "soap lady's" mouth wide open like that; I didn't think people could actually die with their mouths wide open like that (even when they were tortured to death).

That perfectly explains why I've never seen any bodies with their mouths hanging wide open before.
So I'm guessing our jaws drop even lower once our bodies start decomposing.
I can stomach this kind of stuff even though finding a corpse like this in person would give me nightmares lol
I wouldn't be jealous of finding people's dead bodies lol
As other people have stated, it’s to do with the muscles etc during composition but also when bodies start to decompose, gases within the body tend to push things about a bit inside and quite often the tongue protrudes outwards which also causes the mouth to open :)
Where in Philadelphia is this museum? I've lived here my whole life and never heard of it,
Old City. At the Physician's College
Lol in 2022 we just scan the whole body and you get super high res image
adipocere? honey, you mean corpse cheese
We'll stick with adipocere, it's a far less graphic and gross word 😂😂

How are they protecting themselves from the radiation?

how can someones jaw open up like that???? (no offense)

its creepy cause she looks like she was screaming
@@tabathamccain3278 I thought she looks like she's screaming. It's very unsettling
Part of what happens after death, quite a natural process. Funeral home presentations usually have mouths wired shut.
@andrea201038 Philadelphia!! its pretty neat, but don't go out to eat before you, you might through it up later lol
Is this museum haunted?
Yay! I sae her there!
