- Richard Dowling plays Heliotrope Bouquet composed by Scott Joplin and Louis Chauvin (1907). Filmed Sunday, October 2, 2016 at the Cape Cod Ragtime Festival at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Orleans, MA.
I love this! I know ragtime isn’t jazz per se, but I do feel the introduction has hints of that jazz dissonance I love so much
One of the best performances of this I have heard. Maybe the best!
I agree. Most play Scott Joplin too fast. His music was not meant to be played "honkey-tonk" style. This rendition is true to the original sheet music and displays the proper expression and form that the composer intended (i have been playing and studying Scott Joplin for many years).
This is the best performance of ragtime I have ever heard. Such elegance and grace.!!!! Joplin always says "not too fast"! Finally someone that does not just blast through the piece! Thank you.
Right , I agree.
This is chauvin

Beautiful performance, really!
Thank you so much, Richard Dowling and Ragtime Press! I was listening to another performance of this piece on UA-cam, which left me terribly dissatisfied, for the performer seemed to have little feeling for the piece. Mr. Dowling's rendition feels as if he's returning to the beloved "old neighborhood"!
I always thought this was written by Louis Chauvin, but it appears that it was a collaboration between Chauvin & Scott Joplin. Regardless, it’s a beautiful song, wonderfully performed.
I always keep in mind that both of them made it
wow this is the best i've heard
Thank you for interpreting the Heliotrope instead of trying to make it sound like a piano roll. Very nice!
Possibly the best rendition of this delightful piece I have heard, and I have heard a good many.
beautiful almost brought me to tears
That is beautiful....probably the most delicate composition by Scott in my estimate....and your rendition was very emotive! Thanks you!
Any Joplin piece can be played delicately. Heliotrope was supposed to be faster and stronger.
This is chauvin not Joplin
@@aswomebro2601 'Heliotrope Bouquet: A Slow Drag'. Fast and strong it is then.

Very nicely played.
