  • We are joined by Ustadh Mohammed Abdullah Artan @LoohCast as he illustrates and explains the illustrious history of East Africa and the many Sultanates that flourished in the Horn of Africa from the earliest epoch in Muslim history.
    We also uncover the state policy towards East Africa, as instructed by Prophet Muhammad himself and implemented by the Rashidoon Caliphs as well as the Abbasids up to Harun al-Rashid.
    Somaly piracy during the Rashidoon Caliphate is also explained in additional to the following themes and talking points:
    • Somali Piracy in Early Islam
    • Abbasid Correspondence with Mogadishu
    • Ottoman Habash
    • Said of Mogadishu
    • Sultanates of Somalia and East Africa
    • Early Islamic Conquests and policy towards Horn of Africa

    Thank you for having me on. Its always refreshing to return to your engaging, thought provoking history channel. Always a huge a fan, May Allah bless you and your team and put a long term baraka in this.
    This was very brief gloss over, and some of you might feel I left out things, or even didn't provide in-depth-detail discussion, which is true. But I don't think this was the aim of it. More detailed discussions on specific areas can be arranged, such as:
    - the pre-islamic influence of the Horn on Arabia;
    - Role of Muslims from the Horn in Islamic dynasties across Muslim world;
    - Male and Female scholarly pioneers from the Horn and their mark on the Islamic sciences..etc.

    The historical ties between the Somali peninsula and Makkah runs much deeper than the advent of Islam. Even before the emergence of Islam, Makkah was deeply connected to the Somali region. Among the 360 idols worshipped by the Quraish and other local tribes in pre-Islamic Makkah, many bore Somali names, highlighting the roots between the two regions. Furthermore, significant Somali clans trace their lineage back to Aqīl ibn Abī Ṭālib, the cousin of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Additionally, the Quraish, known as wealthy "zāwamāl" nomadic traders, operated extensively across the Red Sea, suggesting further links between Makkah and Somali Peninsula.
    Examining the practices and culture of the pre-Islamic Quraish alongside clans from the land of Punt (often referred to as the "Land of Gods," modern-day Somalia) reveals striking similarities. Somali nomadic sea-faring poets, renowned for their trading prowess, share similarities with the Quraish. Given these connections, it is plausible that Makkan tribes may have ancestral ties to the Somali Peninsula.
    Considering this historical context, it becomes understandable why Prophet Muhammad (SAW) initially directed his companions to Somalia and sought refuge with the neighboring King Najashi Axum.

    It is said that the Prophet Mohammed (s.a.w.) who was persecuted by the Qureish in order to save the sahaba (followers) suggested that the latter go to the Negus (King) Negash, who gave a warm welcome (refuge) to the guests. Once these guests were accommodated they began to practice Islam, King Negash was amazed by the behavior of the faithful and asked them what it is, they explained Islam and everything it consists of, King Negash embraced Islam and many some of the inhabitants followed him.

      That’s speaking about Habeshis. Not Somalis. بلاد الحبش is modern day Ethiopia/Eritrea. It could have potentially stretched to northern parts of modern Somali lands such as Somaliand, but nothing more.

    • @IbnSharif
      @IbnSharif Місяць тому +3

      Hence why Najeshi, who was the ruler of Habeshis, was Christian. Somalis were never, and have never had Christians. They were nomadic camel herders who believed in a religion named “Waqeefena” that’s connected to the Ethiopian ethnic group named “Oromos”, who still have followers of this religion.

    • @IbnSharif
      @IbnSharif Місяць тому +1

      It also would make sense post the saying of the prophet ﷺ. Ethiopians have never been conquered historically speaking. Rather they conquered the Arabs. Specifically modern day Yemen. Hence why “Abrah” who was the Christian Habeshi general brought with him an army of elephants (from Ethiopia) with him to destroy the Ka’bah. He came from Yemen, because Yemen was under Habeshi (Ethiopian) rule. Ethiopia is also the only African country that beat the western invaders from colonizing, not only once, but twice. Somalia was not only colonized, but colonized by three separate countries. By Italy (Somalia), UK (Somaliland), and France (Djibouti).

      No Muqdisho was established by ethnic Somalis. You have a misconception that Somalis had an exclusively nomadic history, however coastal cities were established by Somalis in antiquity. 1. Nomadic lifestyles increased in Somalia due to Futuh al Habash. The war took a toll on both the Adal and Abyssinia and resulted in damaged trade routes, less agriculture and urbanism and an increase in nomadism. 2. Islam doesn't belong to arabs... arabs literally killed and tried to erase muslims. Allah is the one who conquered them and he is the one that chooses the hearts he wins over with guidance and those he leaves astray. If we stayed as waaq it would just be a more degenerate version of today. Politics aside, Somali's one of the classiest and most honorable societal structures. The average somali will look for work where available and work theirselves to their limits, they will spend sadaqah on those needy in similar situations to themselves even if they dont have enough for themselves, they will show hospitality any visiting guests from other cities, villages, baadiyo by having their kids sleep on the floor and clear the beds. It it a shameful act to beg when you're able to work. Yes there's a bad wrap of ppl due to a minority of individuals but when you put the average somali and compare to the average arab... the arab is always much less honorable in their customs and normality. Same when you compare average whites, average indians, average, west africans... Average Somali customs ALWAYS top the charts on empathy, hospitality, and honourable customs on a societal level. Our first major civilizations was the Land of Punt which was definitely in Somalia as they have tested the Frankincense in Egyptian tombs.3000 year old pottery from Babylon, Mycenae, and Egypt has been found on one of the old Somali coastal cities called Xafun. We have one of the oldest mosques in the world in Zeila that has two Qiblas which means before the Muslims turned toward Makkah. Our roots are firm in the religion and the region.
