  • “Fridays at the Front” is a collaboration between Civil War Digital Digest and the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation to bring you great history out of the Shenandoah Valley! Join us today and visit part of the 2nd Winchester Battlefield. This portion saw combat near the end of the battle, and it didn’t go so well for the newer 18th Connecticut. See the place. Hear descriptions of the fight from their chaplain. Join us for a small piece of history!

My Great grand uncle Pvt Christopher Hussey (originally from Ireland) was a confederate soldier in the Stonewall brigade, Co. B, 27th Virginia Infantry who died at the time of 2nd Winchester. He wasn't killed or injured in the battle, he apparently died of 'Heart Disease' near winchester, during the battle. on the 14th of June 1863.

Great video! When Milroy ordered the Main Fort to be blown up, it sent a storm of bullets a great distance. I’ve recovered a good many of those bullets, they’re very mangled, partially melted, and squared where they compressed against each other in the blast. A unique artifact of 2nd Winchester!

A railway cut is incredibly tough to attack - I own a quarter mile of an abandoned railway cut. Cant think of a better place to defend.

Milroy - the one union soldier the rebs wanted very much to hang on sight. The one to stick it to old Stonewall himself at the battle of McDowell. Milroy's Weary Boys were responsible for one of the most famous quotes elicited from Grant during the Battle of the Wilderness. “Oh, I am heartily tired of hearing about what Lee is going to do. Some of you always seem to think he is suddenly going to turn a double somersault, and land in our rear and on both of our flanks at the same time. Go back to your command, and try to think what we are going to do ourselves, instead of what Lee is going to do.” Some say Milroy delayed Lee's cavalry from reaching Gettysburg in time to scout intel for the rebs. Is that a good deal - sacrifice a division and perhaps turn the tide of the war?

The sound quote is marginal audio (nps?).
Will, your clear and animated as always.

A remote record that did not go as well as I had hoped. I ran out of time to have it re-recorded. Sorry for that!

Will: Now that you’ve done a Second Battle of Winchester video, would you consider doing a follow up which touches on the subsequent Court of Inquiry, the arrest of General Milroy, why he was never given another command, and how this Union defeat alter played into the Battle of Gettysburg. There seems to be a lot more to the aftermath of this battle that can be explored. Respectfully, W.S

@@CivilWarDigitalDigest Milroy was acquitted of the arrest charges made though Lincoln was quoted as saying "we have had enough of his kind of genius". Lincoln may have been hasty if one considers the affect delaying confederate cavalry had on the outcome at Gettysburg - though it is hard to follow all the movements and dates. His Weary Boys went on under different leadership - nearly caused disaster holding the union flank in the battle of the wilderness - were routed and were responsible for another infamous quote from grant made with great heat. "Some of you always seem to think he is suddenly going to turn a double somersault, and land in our rear and on both of our flanks at the same time. Go back to your command, and try to think what we are going to do ourselves, instead of what Lee is going to do.” According to Shelby Foote - the weary boys later redeemed themselves in another big battle under grant where they were the only ones to achieve their objective.

I have often wondered if Milroy was also a descendant or related to the Milroy Wigtown martyr/covenanter hung in 1685. I have read he loathed West Pointers because he was an outsider with a non West Point education - but he was the only union commander of troops that I know of to stick it to old Stonewall at the battle of McDowell.
