Who doesn’t love fluffy, warm, and crispy on the outside doughnuts! Great news is this delicious treat existed during the Civil War era, just a little different. Using a special cookbook from 1864, Will makes doughnuts hearthside and provides the story on the cookbook. This is one you need to make at home!

Is the recipe adapted for modern day all-purpose flour, with the substantially more gluten bred into it, or do we need to use a different kind of flour?

Not sure if they adapted it but we used all-purpose and it’s worked well.

Lard good. Canola oil not. One natural the other not.
