    I was a Sony shooter for years, but trying the Zf made me buy one and become a Nikon fanboy.
    Both very capable cameras, but I shoot architecture and landscapes 8-10 hours a day 5-6 days a week, so weaknesses come out in those conditions!
    In my experience, the mirrorless Nikon autofocus system is way more quick, accurate and pliable than Sony with a near perfect hit rate even after thousands of hours of shooting. The colors and white balance of the Nikons is 1,000,000,10% better than Sony, no question!
    My last Sony was an R5, with 63MP, and “on paper” better dynamic range. In practice however, the Nikon’s image files (in RAW at least) have greater sharpness and show much greater dynamic range than Sony’s.
    Besides, the Zf is just more fun to own and use….retro, but SERIOUS instead of just a gimmick. ;)

      How's the ZF's battery life compared to the Sony A7IV or A7III ?

    Digital Cameras these days are great. At the end the results are made by the user. No body will tell the camera you use. Clients don’t care either. I wish a modern camera would bring more clients but that won’t happen. I’ve had the chance to shoot with the 3 most common brands and they all have pros and cons. Use whatever you have and practice and make art.

    I shot sony a7iv and a7rv and couldn't get past their colors. While the af is great and controls wonderful,Sony white balance and color science can't just compete with the nikon. As a portrait shooter I found everything am looking for in the nikon Z8.

    From a non photographer and stranger who look at your camera hanging on your neck perspective, A7 series and Zf looks the same and just maybe when closer, the Zf has more marking on top because their shape looks basically the same, the prism looking EVF and flat top define their retro SLR look, the A7 is the modern approach of that shape, Zf is the retro approach of that shape, hence if one just want get one for the look, A7 isn't much far away from that shape but come with bigger grip but with he PASM shooting approach, I asked and some eoolenget thebZf for the look but didn't use the dedicated to shutter and ISO dials and end up use the front and rear dials hence at the end even more wasted and they use it like a PASM camera too, what do you think?
    I plan to get Zf with 28-400mm f4-8 because it fullfill most of what I need and one Sony Xperia 1 VI (16,24,48,85-170, 2X macro) as the everyday waterproof macro camera that always with me, I might get a 14-30 and Voigtländer 50mm F1 later too, what do you think?
    Can you review the Sony Xperia 1 VI and compare it to the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, and which phone do you think pair the best with photographer and shoot in the most natural looking colour?

    All cameras are so good today it’s down to personal preference. For me I don’t care about the technology anymore but strictly the look and the soul of the camera. Sonys look terrible and so far will always be a no.

      I moved from a Nikon D770 to a Sony A7R5. I thought I was worried about people saying that Sony colours were not as good, but I can't tell any difference. I bought the A7R5 because I'd seen a few reviews were they said Tue auto iso and auto wb, are good, and they are. I really think on the modern Sony's they have got it right.

    • @FramesTM
      @FramesTM  Місяць тому +1

      @markshirley01 I completely agree that the new Sonys are great. They are implementing the required changes. The colours and auto wb is much better, in the last 1.5 years. I would have no problem using the Sonys. I believe Sony is the second Nikon. And I am very unsure about the value Canon brings.

    as a owner of zf and z8 I prefer zf more for day to day photography unless i need to go for extreme sport or wildlife shootings which zf also does better but it lacks the resolution of 45mp which z8 has.

    Nikon is better value for money, Nikon S series f1.8 lens are priced similar to the Sony lenses. The only gripe is the lack of full senser readout

    • @jpdj2715
      @jpdj2715 Місяць тому

      With "lack of full senser readout" you mean in some crop mode? As Nikon work with seriously professional photographers (the Z 9 was developed in collaboration with a French press agency with 150 full-time pro photojournalists), the thinking must be that "pros see the crop in full frame and apply it in post". That's how we did it when we shot Hasselblad 500 series in the 70s and in the square format we decided for landscape or portrait crops in camera, but could only apply that in post. Or 4"*5" Graflex press cameras in the 40s. Or 35mm full frame. Or Pentax 6x7. Whatever the camera was, crop happened in post.
      Do we still want/need that today? I'm indifferent about that, as I still shoot in "crop in post" mode. Your files will be equally big as mine, except in crop mode, Nikon's files will be smaller SOOC.
      If I had a gripe about Nikon's choice, then it would be that they don't give me faster performance in crop mode where the camera has to deal with a lot less megabytes per second, at least between the frame cache and the memory card.
      If they actually apply the crop in the sensor already, then we should be able to get seriously higher performance speeds in crop modes. As this doesn't happen, I suspect some inflexible "real-time" coding in there ("real-time" means a program, or parts thereof, will execute precisely in a predefined amount of time. Over the past decades, a lot of people started using this jargon in different fine semantics).
      For full disclosure, I shoot a Z 8. The f/1.8 "S" class lenses are excellent and completely silenced my recurring rant about my F-mount lenses (chromatic aberration and tint differences between lenses), plus the high MP (>= 36MP at FF or in FX mode) Nikons have the OLPF Eliminated and this makes the 45MP much sharper than the numeric difference between 24 and 45 imply.
      Note that humans reference "resolution" (DPI, PPI) and sharpness (linePairs per millimetre) in "linear" (one dimensional) units. MP are an area unit. If we want to double resolution;sharpness we double the linear unit and e.g. go from 90 DPI to 180 DPI. That's a meaningful difference. For a sensor, linear doubling means that X*Y=MP becomes 2X*2Y=4MP (ceteris paribus, and assuming lenses and processing that can deal with both; and assuming humans can see the difference - probably not). So, "ceteris paribus", 96MP is twice as good as 24MP. But, removing the OLPF means we violate ceteris paribus and incidentally we get about double the sharpness. Compare the Nikon D800 (OLPF) to the D800E (OLPF Eliminated - 2012 released) with the sharpest F-mount lens on both, in DxO Mark. Shocking. Z 6(i, ii, iii) and Z f have an OLPF. None of the 45MP full frame Nikons has one. And, incidentally, a D500 APS-C camera has no OLPF either, which explains why it is so sharp relative to a 24MP full frame.

    What AF settings and custom buttons do you use for birding with your ZF? I struggled a bit to nail focus on various bird species recently (herons, egrets, etc). I've heard these species can be problematic for Nikon's algorithms. Have you used 3D tracking or custom AF "boxes" too? What have you found gets the best results and what is your secondary method if animal/bird eye-AF fails?

    • @FramesTM
      @FramesTM  Місяць тому +1

      Just kept the af on to 3d and allow the camera to detect the subject with wide area. If I see that it’s not picking the bird up, I would change the area to a small wide rectangle. That’s all

    • @bladerealm124
      @bladerealm124 Місяць тому +1

      @@FramesTM do you use any back button focus setup or other custom buttons? On my R5 I have one back button set to bird eye AF and the other set to spot focus in case eye-AF doesn't find the bird. I'm hoping there is a similar effective setup for the ZF.

    • @FramesTM
      @FramesTM  Місяць тому +2

      @bladerealm124 it’s really a budget camera compared to the R5. One thing Nikon keeps for the high end cameras is the subject detect over ride function. So that’s not there in Zf. I used 3D tracking on back button focus and it works flawless

    U made this video at the time when you need to compare a7iv with z6iii or Z6iii with a7siii😅
    Im a wedding photographer i use D850 Z8 and Z6ii
    I wish z7iii comes with a 36MP
    (Im a bit jealous about sony users because they have these a7iv and a7siii and the third party lense ecosystem especially Zeiss)
    let me explain why the 36MP
    24mp is a bit less because hardly allows me to crop
    on the other hand files from z8 n D850 arent as clean as Z6ii . Maybe its because of high resolution which also could mean more contrasty noise. And after every shoot data from Z8 or D850 feels heavy on storage.
    I believe in quality of pixel data than quantity of pixel data . with little flexibility to crop and not overburdening me while editing n storage. Finding a balance of all practicality
    I wish Z7iii comes with a 36MP sensor with clean quality of data.
    Ppl might call it a downgrade from z7ii 46mp but i know what im n why im saying this
    There is this Z8 jst in case if any one wants those 46MP files

    The ergos on the Nikon are so much better - the Sony feels like a high end consumer product. The Nikon feels like a high end purpose built photographic instrument. I know what I would rather use. By the way -- I think the Zf runs circles around anything Leica brings to the table - especially after the manual focusing system the Zf has. Makes Leica lens actually usable.

    Sony has the worst heat dissipation, there cameras turn off so quickly in comoarision to any other brand and if it doesn't turn off the camera heats up very quickly. Luckily my Nikon Zfc is better in that.

      Nikon designs their own sensors. They simply use Sony electronics to fab the sensors. Same as AMD and Qualcom is using TSMC to fab their processors. The sensor IP remains with Nikon. As Nikon is also selling Litography machines, Sony might be using those from Nikon anyway.
