  • Watch our video showcasing the University of Sussex’s Centres of Excellence, our flagship centres of research, each addressing areas of global importance. Meet Centre Directors; Winfried Hensinger (Director of Sussex Centre for Quantum Technologies), Alice Eldridge (Co-Director of Sussex Digital Humanities Lab), and Gail Davey (Director of Centre for Global Health Research) and discover areas of their research that are driving progress for our planet and its people, built on a belief that any challenge is only #ImpossibleUntilDone
Our Sussex Centre for Quantum Technologies is harnessing quantum physics research to create transformational products that are likely to change the way we live and work.
Professor Winfried Hensinger: “We're building a full-scale quantum computer that will be able to find the answers to some of the most urgent technical challenges of our time. From designing drugs for health care - to making aircraft engines more fuel efficient. University of Sussex has become a powerhouse for quantum technology”.
In a rapidly evolving, increasingly digital world, Sussex Digital Humanities Lab are investigating the opportunities and implications for contemporary society.
Dr Alice Eldridge: “Our work in eco-acoustics aims to develop tools to listen in to the soundscape that emerges from an ecosystem as a way to understand its health. Our research centre brings together experts from arts and humanities, computing and social sciences, remixing those disciplines to solve the challenges that we're facing. The next generation of tools for planetary care will be co-created with scientific and traditional ecological knowledges. We hope to create a world where people and planet thrive as one.”
Our Centre for Global Health Research is addressing global health and wellbeing challenges, including infectious diseases and neglected tropical diseases.
Professor Gail Davey OBE: “Within the Centre for Global Health Research at Sussex, we have an aim which is to eliminate podoconiosis within our lifetimes. That is achievable and I'm committed to continuing work until that goal happens.”
Collectively, there are 12 Centres of Excellence, each is building on existing research strengths at Sussex, and will conduct ground-breaking and potentially transformative research that will drive progress and make an important contribution to the planet and its people. From advancing quantum computing and artificial intelligence, better understanding genome damaging diseases, developing initiatives that contribute to global sustainability, and enhancing access to education across the globe, the Centres focus on areas of international importance and will enable University of Sussex researchers to address a range of societal challenges.
The Centres will also support interdisciplinary research collaboration and provide high-quality research environments for the next generation of researchers and students.
It was through a competitive process that the 12 Centres were selected. The Centres will have this status for the next five years in order to undertake explorative research.
Stay tuned for more videos in the series showcasing:
