You missed one of the creepiest points about Paveglia, the Venetian "plague island." It's said that at least fifty percent of the soil on the island is composed of human ash.
Note: The average Venetians I've spoken to about Paveglia have all said that they went there as kids to have picnics and barbecues, to sit in the sun away from the cramped confines of Venice, and chase the rabbits that were there. It was, by all accounts, peaceful.

As someone who went to the capuchin catacombs, I can confirm how creepy it is there
You should check out New Straightsville Ohio. It was a coal mining town in Ohio. Well late 1800's early 1900's the miners went on strike. The owners of the mines brought in a train load of men mostly blacks to work the mine for less money than the other miners were getting. Of course the striking miners didn't like that. So while the Scab miners were in the mines they told them to come out or they would send in a burning rail car of coal. The Scab miners didn't come out, and so the striking miners sent the burning car of coal into the mines, which happen to be a gassy mine too boot. That mine was still burning underground when I lived there back in the late 60's. There was a news paper article about it behind glass in the town's small Post Office. And there was an old woman who NEVER had snow on her property, and over the opening of the well on her property she had a grate and always had a pot of coffee cooking for those who visited. They had to re-do several of the roads through the town because of the heat of the fires underground destroyed the existing roads.
