    This channel the first channel to have Top Five in its name and make sense. By adding the "s" he can do all multiples of 5, instead other top 5 channels that do like no vids of top five of something.

    Baltimore is most definitely NOT the capital of Maryland, it's Annapolis. I know, I lived there for 30 years... I mean I lived in MD not Baltimore or Annapolis

    The facts on Lake Natron are not really accurate in the video, so fair warning of the rant ahead.
    Lake Natron is a very alkaline lake and reaches dangerously high temperatures of around 104 degrees Fahrenheit and sometimes higher. It also has an extremely high soda and salt content. High levels of evaporation have left behind natron and trona. The alkalinity of the lake can reach a pH greater than 12. The surrounding bedrock is composed of alkaline, sodium-dominated trachyte lavas that were laid down during the Pleistocene period. The lavas have significant amounts of carbonate but very low calcium and magnesium levels. This has allowed the lake to concentrate into a caustic alkaline brine.
    During the dry season, as water evaporates, salinity increases, and salt-loving organisms like cyanobacteria begin to thrive and photosynthesize. The reds of the open water of the lake and oranges of the shallow parts are created through the red pigment these photosynthesizing cyanobacteria produce. Halophile microorganisms on the alkali salt crust of the surface of the lake also can cause the red or pink coloration.
    The high salt content and high temperatures make it inhospitable to most organisms, but it is still home to some endemic algae, invertebrates, birds, and even some fish species that can survive in the less salty water around the lake's margins. The lake is the regular breeding ground for the near-threatened lesser flamingoes as they are highly dependent on this one location. When salinity increases, so do cyanobacteria, and the lake can also support more nests. It's a safe breeding location for these birds as the caustic environment provides a natural barrier against predators that try to reach their nests on the seasonally forming evaporite islands. Greater flamingoes also nest on the mudflats. Two endemic fish species, the alkaline tilapias Alcolapia latilabris and A. ndalalani, also thrive in the waters at the edges of the hot spring inlets. A. alcalica is also present in the lake but is not endemic.
    I have seen in more than one video how this lake killed animals simply by making contact with it and it then turned them to stone, but from the beginning, I didn't really believe this, so I did some searching. Turns out, my suspicions were correct but not completely. The lake does not kill animals by contact with it and instead only kills animals that cannot withstand the rough conditions. The high pH level can burn the skin and eyes of animals that are not adapted to it, and even those that are adapted to it can die by drowning or by being killed. The stone-like appearance these dead creatures take on comes from sodium carbonate deposits building upon their bodies. As for their positions in the photo shown, they were taken by photographer Nick Brandt, who found the dead creatures in that condition before posing them in such a way to make them appear "living". He wanted to "bring them back to life" in a way, or make them "alive again in death."

    Critically endangered but *infesting* an island?
    Considering the Golden Lancehead Viper only exists on that island and has *ONLY EVER* existed on that island I think it's okay to take them off the endangered species list.
    ...just sayin.

    • @cantoffendanyone5786
      @cantoffendanyone5786 Рік тому

      It’s not far off to consider them that. Considering they only exist on one small island, which if outsiders could explore would easily lead to their numbers going down, it’s fair to consider them endangered. Or at least “near threatened”

    Baltimore made be bad but places like Chicago and New Orleans are much worst. I grew up in New Orleans when it first reached murder capital status and held onto that title for several years, lost it and got it back again. I believe it's considered the murder capital once again, last I checked there were 10 murders before the 1st week of 2023 ended. I've long since moved away but if we're talking statistics, New Orleans was #1 in 22 as well.

      @@hydro.pl.27 Precisely why I put the quotation marks around the word SAFE. I'm into exploring abandoned places and would love a few pics featuring the old amusement park & gory kids toys strewn about the old orphanage. Yet, even with their new tourist "packages" I wouldn't want to spend the night there with the amount of radiation still present. Hard pass.
      ps. Loved you calling the reactor remains a sarcophagus. Legit❣
