@kingmarshmusic Completely agree with you.... Winner Takes It All is one of their best songs, and did deserve a higher spot! At least it made #1 in the UK though :)

I'm guessing the hosts "The Romantics" are kinda off their face when hosting the show? :P

I remember the previous week Abba jumped from 16 to 9, so was very disappointed that they dropped to 10! "The Winner Takes It All" should have been a number 1 for them in OZ!!

By any chance, would you have the Countdown Top 10 for that week written down somewhere? Been trying to find it for years now!

      @@OzFrog Unfortunately, no!

I remember saying to a friend at school that if it wasn’t ABBA, it would be a number 1! ABBA went from smashing the Australian charts to struggling almost overnight, pretty much after their massively successful March 1977 tour. I can’t help thinking failing to appear on Countdown had a lot to do with it. Molly would have been offended.

It's strange. The Kent Music Report which was the quasi-official chart bible for Australia from 1970 to 1992 stated that Babooshka only peaked at number 2, yet countdown is saying that the song was at number one the week ending October 26th 1980. I'm confused 🤦‍♂️

Yeah it was really bizarre. Countdown did their own chart calculations for YEARS, even to the point where often you would have two songs in the same position in one week. But finally common sense prevailed and Countdown started using the Kent chart in June 1983 (under the ARIA brand).

@@OzFrog Thanks for explaining that! I've wondered about that for ages, especially being a huge Kate Bush fan (she's my #1). I always wondered why KMR had her peaking at #2 with Babooshka, but Countdown had her at #1 (which I'm not complaining about cos she's always #1 to me LOL!).

Same. I have that yellow chart book and have only found one spelling error in it. It is meticulously done, so I would believe that book over Countdown. Maybe CD made Kate #1, just so they could air that video in full, because let's face it, Kate's look's & the video are more apealling than poor old Leo.

Countdown have cocked it up again with their own-number one from Kate Bush and they've put Leo Sayer where he hurts at number 2 !!

Kate Bush WAS No.1 all around Australia !!

@@skippybartalozzi in my parallel American billboard chart in the Hot 100, Kenny Rogers kept Kate Bush off number one on the 6th of December 1980 whereas Leo Sayer dropped down a place to number three, despite Babooskha would be her highest charting hit in America than Running Up That Hill which was featured it’s conclusion in the fourth series of Stranger Things and peaked at number three in 2022 when people streamed it due to an American hit show.
In the Kent Music Report over Australia as Leo Sayer kept her off number one and in the ARIA chart, Kate Bush was already at number one, as there was two different music charts right through until 1983.
