DBG: Scott Shafiroff's Ford Mustang II, A Car And Driver That Changed The Rules Of NHRA Pro Stock

- A big Shout out goes to Chris Leibenberg, from 3 Dog Garage. Their restoration shop, is almost done with the build.
This is a video, showing that not everything goes well at the Drag Strip. I open with my own crash, and some details, and show the Mishap, that happened to Scott Shafiroff. Scott raced throughout NHRA, and specifically Pro Stock class, 73, 74, 75, and 76. I show some of his race cars, and focus on the racing and restoration of his 1975 Pro Stock Mustang II. In a couple of pics, you can see the axle of the Mustang II, all jacked up. The story goes, that bolt broke, that held in the right rear front attachment point of the ladder bar, on the Don Hardy built Mustang. This event, caused NHRA to look at the rules, and attachment requirements for the ladder bar style rear suspension in Pro Stock cars. NHRA required the bolt to be held in place with 2 pins, the tubing of the ladder bar had to be made to thicker specifications. Scott will expound on this with his Live Chat. Scott told me that Don Hardy sent new ladder bars to every customer that may have this potential issue.
Scott raced for years, and raced many different cars in NHRA, but decided that he wanted to build the engines, rather race. we will hear the whole story from Scott. Scott later built his Race Engine Shop, into one of the premiere engine shops in New York.
www.shafiroff....
Nice opening - Kitty reaches for the sky! Scott and his cars bring back a lot of memories for me. I agree, that Mustang II was a looker. Certain chassis builders had certain issues that we were well aware of at the time. The issues were eventually corrected. As a kid, and as a tribute to Scott's Mustang II, I painted my Pro-Stock Pinto in a similar scheme. Saw Scott run in his Ford but mostly in his Chevrolets. Very successful engine builder. Nice to see that Mustang of his being recreated. Great cameos here by Andrea, Alaina and even Zeus. I love Alaina's patriotic spirit. Well done, DragBoss and Family!
Thank you Bill, I thought you would appreciate it for sure. Those were the days when I just started to see racing on TV, rare. Love the paint and gold leaf lettering. They said hi Uncle Bill. Red white and blue, is what I say to you...Stay tuned
Love the older pro stocks ❤
They were the roots and my favorite class back in the day.
Fantastic Resto on that Pro Car...Great to see these Legend Cars Live on.....Front Bumper.?????... Great Video DragBoss, always fun, your a lucky Man to have a lovely family that share your hobby ans Passion... keep well
Thank you my friend. I am blessed and give thanks twice daily. I love these old pro stock cars. Every one is history. Keep well and strong yourself my friend.
Nice to see the crew. Thanks for taking the time to put it all together.
You’re welcome mate. Glad you enjoyed it. Crew says hi down in 🇦🇺
that was really cool to see those photos of Scotts car racing as well as the restoration photos. it would be great to see all of these restored pro stock cars having their own show, and hearing their stories. well done Tim amazing video showing a great car, thank you
Thanks Craig, trying to keep pro stock alive and well at DragBoss Garage. They do have some meets where the cars are on display, few and far between
thank you for making these amazing videos showing amazing cars, talking to incredible people. for me this is amazing as i live on the other side of the world and havent the abilty to see these cars in person. so thank you very much Tim for showing all us ford fans these stories@@DragBoss351Cleveland
Thanks Tim!❤
Your most welcome Vamp
I love that Cougar! Very threatening to see that in one's rearview mirror at dusk whilst driving a lonely, two lane road.
Thanks much. I can remember driving home at night, midnight. Exhaust could be heard for miles, back then 55 was 3k rpm, man she sure sounded great.
Good to see this history put out there for us to see. I finally learned how to pronounce his name. I remember riding to HS in a Mustang 2. Lord they put some low HP motors in them cars. Great Vid.
Thanks Clint, appreciated. Yes I had one too, 74, with anemic 4 cylinder. Man could I shift those gears.
@@DragBoss351Cleveland Stick life ! '74 was the low point in Mustang performance, and if I remember right, it was the only year without a V8. Then there was the less than awesome '80/'81 255ci Mustangs' with their 119 horse (pony) power....SLOW !!
I just bought a BBC rotating assembly from him about 8 months ago and he gave me a hell of a deal on some good parts. I didn`t know he was a racer but it makes sense. Turns out he`s got a friend of mine in Florida from New York named Tommy A. Delt with a guy named Vinny and he went out of his way to help me . Next time I get a big dollar job I`m going back to those guys
Right on my brother. That’s what I’m talking about, customer service and support goes all the way. Appreciated 🇺🇸
Your Cougar is BOSS! Don’t see those very often…..very nice ride.
Thanks Mark. Appreciate it. I have not raced it in 6 years, and finally will be ready for spring. Stay tuned.
The best years for PS...Grumpy, Gapp and Roush, Glidden, Dyno, etc.
Man ain’t that the truth Earl
I remember Scott's racing Crate Engines Wow , Cool video Tim. Any Tunnel Port's in the background??
Thank you, glad you enjoyed. I didn't see any?
That's right listen to that girl always learning something new at dragboss garage like and subscribe, that was priceless tim I like how you just go with the flow
Thanks Terry, sometimes to much effort to fight back, lol. I have a bunch of catch phrases, my kids know them all. Hmm wonder if I should start porting a set of old A3 heads, see what I can do?
You have an awesome family brother! Well done!
thanks much, trying to teach them what i can, stay tuned
Hey my brother, Tim here, i'm still searching for that E-town, Summernationals pic of Bob pushin his car by himself.....i havent forgotten, i just cant FIND the F'n thing...grrrr.........if i ever do, you'll be the FIRST to know!!!.....i apologize for the extended wait...PEACE to you sir, and i'm diggin the Scott vid, as i'm a Jersey boy, and knew his rep well!!
No worries my brother. I ain’t going no where. Thanks for watching. Trying to schedule Scott on for live chat and talk about his pro stock days.
🏁Great vid!!!!!!🏁
Glad you liked it!! Sunday we will be chatting with Scott, it will be wicked fun, hope your there
I had a safety chain on front of ladder bar in case came off ….don’t know if that in later years ….lol
Well you were thinking ahead, glad no issues for you.
The black and yellow Duster on the far side at the 7:50 time was owned and driven by Stewart Pomeroy. That is the Mopar Missile after Stewart bought the car from Don Carlton. Joe Pappas would know the whole story. When I first met Stewart in Tampa, we went to lunch and he had a folder of photos of a plain black Duster. The front fenders were drooped a bit and I commented it looked like the Missile. He said it was the Missile! Wow! You could have knocked me over with a 426 Hemi block.
I love how they sectioned cars, and acid dipped panels, I have talked to Joe, great car that Missile
Ask Scott , about the trouble with the stock Cleveland blocks , and the Australian blocks Bob , Don , Wayne , and Jack had ,,, !
Yes sir my Friend, we will get his Cleveland knowledge, he may be on Sat or Sun, waiting to find out his schedule.
@@DragBoss351Cleveland Just seen a recommendation on UA-cam for a channel called BuiltMikesWay, from about a year ago. He scored around 8 engines, and loads of iron cylinder heads. There was a pair with filled high ported exhausts, and he says "don't know what that's all about", haha !!
I saw Scott at Empire Drag way in Leicester NY. back in 74. They had 8 Prostocks for a show. Reid Whishant. Was also there, and those were the only ones I remember. I was a Ford fan, so I definitely remember Scott. I think Ron Lyles was there too.
Man that was a show I bet, I raced that track before, off the thruway, before Buffalo? Scott will be live on Sunday at 7pm
Freaking awesome video Tim! Always thought Scott was Chevy only, so I'm looking forward to the live chat! DBG for the win!!
Right on Mav, he was Ford guy, we will chat with him about his Cleveland and Pro Stock experiences. We are all winners, most just need to realize it. 🏁🇺🇸
I have an SRD VEGA. Built before Scott's. Scott's was built the same time as Bruce Larsons car. Scott's Vega exists in Pennsylvania. Larsons car was totalled in Europe
I remember that you mentioned that. Cool deal, Daniel.
That Shafiroff Mustang II was moving! Wish I could afford a Shafiroff power plant for my 86 GT!
Build your own, and better. Because it’s you doing the work, but easy to push buttons and order the hp you want.
I've been running shafiroff motors for bout 20 years now been through 2 632's great motors think next going to noonan but scotts motors will always be in my street car
We will let him know. Stay tuned for the live chat. Thanks and appreciated
@@DragBoss351Cleveland can't wait
ive got a shafiroff 500 atfw sbc in a 4x4 in @ustralia, good thing
Thanks for sharing with us and knowing that his engines are all around the world 🌎 🇦🇺
I've been slowly building my cobra 2 for the past 6 years or so on my channel and at first I thought man, I'm going to get so much hate but if roush, Glidden, Dyno don and Scott had one it's kind of hard to hate on a car with so much racing history unless you are just totally ignorant. I think they can look pretty damn cool! Not the easiest car to build and mod but that's part of the fun!
Build it up, I love those cars, I had a 74 with a 4 banger, fun to drive. They are cool...Get R done
We had a class called "Thunder Saloons" down here in NZ, in the mid/late '70s. Google PDL Mustang 2 to see one that was legendary down here !!
I’ve been subscribed to your channel for because I love the Cobras. They are great cars considering the era they were built in.
@@GA08GT478I need to go see the guy, that made the exhaust for the GT40s, he lives near me. I love the Cobra, neighbor has a kit car, 427 Fe, pounds the ground. Thanks for the sub
Love the drop in by the family! That put a smile on my face. Thanks for bringing us back to the time when you could actually use innovation. Sadly it's just cookie cutters these days.
You’re most welcome Mike. I sure miss those days. Now I know what it was like back in my day when people did the same. Lament on the old days. Everyone says hi🇺🇸
Mr. Exclusive, is at it again! Great upload, sir! Diving into specific "back in the day" drag racers. Love, 70's-80's drag racing! The, heavily modified, "stock" engines!
Thanks Stroker, I like that. Yes more good stuff from the guys that made the history. Stay tuned for Live Chat time.
They did use Factory blocks and heads; modified of Course. No after market for those parts back then. It's amazing to see the rpm they were able to get !!
Nice job. Thanks
Thank you too! Lots of cool memories for many.
The Early Years, when most had flowing locks of hair... and real PROs built Stock , throng(crowd) appealing cars
DBG does it again
Thanks what I’m talking about Rick, those were the days my friend…. Ready for carb tech video series with APD, carbs. Keeping it real.
I fully agree thats Scott and his team build great engines. I run a 434 Ultra Street in my 73 Nova. Best time of 10:38 @ 129. Up here in Canada I run 94 octane with the 10.5:1 compression no problem.
Thanks for watching. Yes he has been building great combos for well over 20 years. Sounds like a stout Chevy.
I worked on Scott's 73 Vega at chuck wright's pro car assoc. When he was at dragway 42. Cut his fuel tank in half, blanked off 1 side to make a smaller tank.couldnt tell from outside when we put the 2 halves back together. He will remember what we provided for him free of charge outside in his hauler,
Thanks for sharing, I will have to ask him about this. He wants to come back and talk a bit more on Pro stock, may talk some of current engine combos..Hmmm Free of charge????
Having worked for a couple of OEM's, I was very impressed watching one of Scott's vids, where he took the viewer through the process of ordering an engine to the parts marshalling and machining/assembly. Very impressive. Also remember him running that Mustang II back in the day. Killer paint job!
I will have to check his video tour out. He has a good business and minimal issues from what I have read. Yes love the paint, just fits.
Scott rebuilt my 70 Pontiac Ramair 3 for my Judge back in the mid 80's,at his Long Island shop.So He wasn't Ford and Chevy only.
I love those Judges. I always remember here come da judge, from laugh in. Live chat with him Sunday night 7pm
I had a subscription to Car Craft back when this was a new car. If memory serves me correctly Scott also had a dragster that was very unique for the time. The man was a racer for sure
I put a pic of his dragster in the vid, did you see it? I still have boxes and boxes of them old mags. Definitely a racer 🏁
@@DragBoss351Cleveland the dragster had front disc brakes. Any idea about its fate?
@alanquintus2069 no idea. We can ask Scott on the live chat.
@@DragBoss351Cleveland I'll be there. Subscribed
@@alanquintus2069thanks for the support alan, stay tuned to DBG.
Thanks tim history so cool.it show how talented them gentleman where back in the day no cnc.thanks for sharing. Peace
Your most welcome, Scott will be on live at 7pm .est tomorrow night
Scott is a Long Islander, not a city guy, completely different accent.
Scott is the kid from New York City, just like on his hood scoops. 😊
Scott was a regular at Englishtown in the mid '70s and was always in the mix no matter what car or class he was running... I'm really looking forward to this livestream...
Cool stuff, I can;t wait to hear his story, yes he will be on Sunday at 7pm, .est
@@DragBoss351Cleveland I will be there! We had a lot of PS heavy hitters that called Raceway Park home and 'the kid from New York City' was at the top of the bunch... Please ask him about the match races!
@@roberthill2219 sure will, he is the man. Be fun chat.
@@DragBoss351Cleveland thanks Tim, YOU are the man!
@roberthill2219 No just the DragBoss.
I'm sure you get tons of questions like this. Opinions ever given on amateur street M code mods you would suggest? Your knowledge of what works and doesn't.
Thanks.
Gears, 3.89,3.91, cam in 106 ILC, timing, good carb.
Thanks! Not quite there. Inch by inch.
You got plenty of time
Love this car's
I do too, one of the best looking cars out there
Don Hardy built my dad's cars
Cool deal, what cars? Thanks Mark.
With a cleveland of course
Of course.
You talk too much, cut you off at 7 min. when the family showed up. Good bye.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video bad boy 😂
🥝✔️🤘
They make wheel stand prevention devices. They are called wheelie bars.
You don't need no stinkin wheelie bars, just good DA shocks
Hey Tim, I said it before you gotta find some kind of mustang II or pinto project and take that motor out of that cougar and into something more safer that cougar sits up way too high put a stock Cleveland in it and build up a true drag car before you get hurt in that car
Thanks Eric, Those wheelstands, were from not having quality DA shocks. After I put the custom Mark Menscers DA in only lifts front wheels about a foot. I just finished Cougar Saturday, she sits low and mean, and ready to test. I would really like to build a 78 Fairmont. Thanks for watching, more on the way.
Heyyyyy, anybody got a unfinished Ford Fairmont for good ol' Tim at Drag Boss garage he's gonna tear that cougar up he has to retire that car to a mild manner Sunday go diving car with the family 😜
Hey who modified the front spindles those photos were kind of between the video with Scott Shafiroff and another video O was trying to zoom in on them, they reminded me of the pro stock stuff from back in the day, like Scott said home made race cars and home made engines and that's the way it was, and it's ashame that this stuff and the people who made it what it was are leaving it all behind these young kids couldn't even imagine how that era was they only know nitrous, pro chargers, turbos insane size engines and carbon fiber everything in the yesteryears everything was built at home or your shop or even the basement, I miss those days and the people who made it happen
@@ericscrutchins6350 yep, want to build a pro stock Fairmont. 😊
@@ericscrutchins6350 my buddy and chassis guy made them. A real learning experience. They bolt on like a dream, aligned well in DragBoss Garage, now taking to a pro race car alignment center. You are so right, many do not know how to fix or fabricate only buy. I try and teach my girls this stuff, when they come out to DBG. Thanks for noticing the work involved.
I'm not from up north . Yet I believe it's spelled ShaFEARoffs .
I’m from upstate Ny, shafiroff there. We will see what Scott says. Maybe this weekend
