The number 1 thing that sticks out, is that they didn't say anything until you asked. It is my opinion that someone in the shop thought they could slip one by you. Which means, you'd have gotten a monochrome green logo and say 'Well you only paid for one color. Now, you got what you paid for. If you want another rack with a full color logo, that'll cost you $1700 more.'
I like that you share all sorts of interesting tidbits about your LC business from one day to the next. I like that you are quick witted, and you have a self-deprecating sense of humour. I'm not in the lawn care business but I still enjoy your conversational videos (including this one). So, from one business owner (fashion) to another (that would be you 😊) - stick to your guns and continue to upload educational content. If your videos help just one person - then you've achieved what you set out to do. And that's all that matters, right?
It looks great! You know, the whole paint change, cleaning the gun in between colors thing I get. But if I quoted a customer for a job and then later realized I forgot to add a little for two-tone leather I would be a little annoyed at myself but I wouldn't change the quote. It doesn't take more paint, the surface area is the same. Just a bit more time to clean the gun in between and mix the second color. And I'd rather the customer like me and be happy in the end😊
I am in sales and if I screw up a quote I eat it.. That is being fair.. I have screwed up a quote and had to tell the client I could not deliver the product due to a massive mistake. He understood and we worked together on another project.. If their margins are so tight then they need to re-structure their pricing.
Reminds me of the old adage "Buyer Beware". Unfortunately, nowadays it is rare for a company to take care of their customer let alone their screw-ups and take responsibility for it.
Hi Brad, looks like I'm about 3 years late to this video. I appreciate the constructive criticism and totally understand your frustrations. I have worked with this company for 4 years and actually replaced the sales representative that handles custom headache racks. He unfortunately was let go because of too many mistakes just like you experienced. On his behalf and the business behalf, we truly apologize. If you ever are in need of a new or another headache rack please reach back out. I assure you things are much smoother and more professional now. Much less of a headache ;)
I don’t blame you about the extra charge. To me I think they just snuck those two in and took off the lesser option in the guise of a “mistake” there never was a “mistake”
Totally get where you are coming from. My OCD does not always allow me to settle. Your provider should have owned up to original quote, their mistake, and they should have told you what colors you needed. Having said all that, it looks great on that truck so be proud. 👍🏻
Been through a similar experience trying to perfect my logo. The back and forth was months long. In the end just went with what I thought was good but not perfect. The end result is no one knows about all the back and fourth and all the imperfections, it looks great to them. Same goes for your logo, I saw it and instantly love it, looks awesome! I want one for my ute :)
I like your diversity of content. Please keep it up. You also do a great job on vids. In my opinion a headache rack is a necessity unless your truck is just a road queen.
Dang. But then again, Brad, it looks GOOD. What's the expression: "Chalk this up as "one for experience" and be sure it doesn't happen again"? Or something like that. Anyway, it does look great!
I bought a spider web brack from the same company in 2010 for my super duty and although I absolutely love the look because I was the only one in my area that had anything even remotely close to that the build quality was absolutely horrible. I have been told that they have redone the way they installed it and have changed the brackets around to a much better design hopefully you have good luck with this rack mine did nothing but squeak and rattle and kept cracking
Maybe it would have been possible if you'd requested it, but if they knew they had limited color options that wouldn't match your logo they should have sent you a packet of paint chips or something similar, not just a photo (and even then, chips usually aren't perfect matches). When I got some paint a few years back I went in with a literal chip (pulled off the wall) for them to try to match to. This was to do some cover-up at the place I worked. The first gallon they gave me didn't match well, to be fair, it was a hard color to match. After showing them a picture of the two side by side (and knowing their color mix) they were able to alter the mix and give me new paint that was a close enough match (was never going to be perfect). They did charge me for both gallons, but didn't charge me the usual fee for the color matching since they got it wrong the first time.
I agree, be professional enough to mark the pricing on the invoice correct the first time. Their administrative sloppiness isn't something that you as the customer should have to pay for. Physical printing and signage is a bear, but not all of this had to be done by the same company. You could have had the rack from any truck accessory company, then the logo made by a sign company and applied separately. In the future regarding logo colors you should specify them according to a standard such as Pantone swatches. That will remove any question of variance due to camera sensors, different monitors, etc. They could then match that swatch with the closest color swatch they have available in their powders, or you could have gone to their facility and matched it with your own eyes in person. And that's another reason to use a professional printer or sign company to do the logo part, they're more familiar with these accepted practices.
I understand the "Headache" I've been through a couple of similar projects and yes it's a big headache. That being said, fantastic looking Headache rack.
Its all about setting the customer’s expectations. In this case, your expectations were set, and they jacked the price up. They should’ve called immediately and explained what happened.
i stopped dealing with supplier after i notified them that their new employee was screwing up invoices and then they tried to charge me the extra money i said to the owner would you rather of me let your employee screw up more invoices or me stop it now he literally said he would rather let the employee screw up FU%^ing hate how some people think business should be done
Educate us, Brad! I enjoy you sharing your experiences with clients and products. There is always something to learn from the experiences of others! The rack looks great, but I agree that "CREEK" would look better if it was darker.
Looks great, it looks like the guy who makes these does the customer service/acquisition himself. From the mistakes on the quote/making pictures of a colour sheet. But anyways he didn't cut corners on quality 😉 pun indent.
Thanks for sharing, really good info to know going in. This is really helpful for someone just starting out and that spend would be a huge investment in their business. Looks great by the way.
I have 30 years experience with color having worked on a printing press! Color matching is never easy and they change after they dry. I don't know how power coating colors and how they change after they are dried. Not like car paint. Sun will make it fade if it's not protected by something? Just fyi
this company doesnt seem to be customer oriented. i feel like their service was dissatisfactory because 1 they misquoted you, and werent able to match the colors to your exact needs. (i feel like finding a paint match, wouldnt be to hard) sorry you got slumped, but your witty and smart and show them who's boss.
They should have a PDF of their colors, not a picture from some camera. The lighting, camera, and the monitor together, you'd never get it right. If they had something like a production proof PDF of their colors, I could see that working out better. But man... They are very much into "you will pay for the work". On the other hand, you should agree to invoice when the quote is finalized. Hell they could have mailed you a sample of those colors in the time you waited for it to be produced
Lemme correct you, Brad. "What people fail to realize is IT'S MY CHANNEL." You post whatever content you want, because it's your channel, my friend. Your followers enjoy whatever content you bring. If people complain about one video out of a hundred, then they can go find a different hobby.
How do you like having a black truck? I'm in the market for one and it's slim pickings so black is the last on the list because of the heat and it being dirty all the time. I live in michigan so in the winter it will really get dirty!
They need better sales training. They gotta understand that customers don't understand what some charges come into play so they need to be accurate and up front about it from the jump. Also, if they misquote you they should eat it. I have a feeling though this sales guy might eat that cost off his commission, which makes him hesitant to absorb that mistake. All in all, this is a sales training issue.
I use a tool box to hold down long boards and laders down. I sometimes knock myself out on boards sticking out. I sometimes knock my shins out, on trailer hitches.
How I see it, with Powder coat (and the whole world) there are millions of colors out there. If you own a company, you should know the colors you choose for your logo. How is a random company supposed to know everything about your company and personal opinions from just a picture? Not every photo is the correct file to be able to work with.
Wait... they didn't pull the colors off your logo for you? All that requires is opening your logo in photoshop and using the color picker tool to find the rgb code... And if they don't have that exact color they can just open up their color chart in photoshop and find the closest match and send for your approval. Odd.
To be fair, they said 'lets talk about colors' then sent the swatch. From there I assumed it was my job to pick so I did. I should have spoken up and asked THEM to pick. So that one COULD have been my fault.

I appreciate this comment a lot, Daff. (I get lots of 'when are you ever going to post another mowing video' comments) Thank you for writing it :)

In any metal work typically the owner or fabricator does not eat the cost for mistakes on an invoice, sometimes it happens but typically it does not.
I like your diversity of content. Please keep it up. You also do a great job on vids.

I like the rack. You are right about the color...That company won't be there long.!
The company is very much still around and thriving :)
Looks sweet but that logo blocks all rear view visibility.
Thats what i was thinking
It does, but I am already so used to using side mirrors for everything due to towing I didn't usually use the rear window anyway.
Dang. But then again, Brad, it looks GOOD. What's the expression: "Chalk this up as "one for experience" and be sure it doesn't happen again"? Or something like that. Anyway, it does look great!

Very good to know, thanks for sharing!
Mounting brackets were the weak point but looks like new design and style from old. Should solve issues.
Good video. Don’t blame you for being dissatisfied with the company.

Sorry I'm so late, but awesome comment and points, thanks!!
Cool story, I really liked the final design, although a yellow-er green maybe could've look a little better.
Also, lol the profile pic with hair
It's a beautiful headache rack

Great video very thorough and fact driven. How are the letters affixed to the rack and also what's the appearance of them on the back? Thanks
They are riveted. The back is solid black in the logo shape, that is what the letters rivet to.
That Headache Rack looks nice. I like it
This was a great lesson. Thanks Brad.

Hey brad, was there a ever an update on the city that sent a cease and desist to that lawn care guy?
On his channel I think there was. They dropped the C&D but still wouldn't let him do volunteer work if I remember right.
Great video thanks for sharing

No that's actually not how it works at all.
What would be cool is if the logo could be removable so when your working it can be up and when your traveling it can be taken down.
Your geting close to 300k Brad, I am almost at 180 haha. My dad said he might buy me a cyclinder mower when I get to 1k haha
