- Woodturning: Ironwood Insanity! The Joker Bowl - Turning a Multiple-Branch Ironwood Crotch
My friend Marky gave me a bunch of burls he collected from trees down on his property. Among the burls was this funky multi-branch crotch piece of ironwood, or Hop Hornbeam (this is not the same wood as Desert Ironwood)). It gets the name ironwood due to its hardness - it’s behind Osage orange, hickory and pecan on the Janka Hardness Scale for North American Trees.
Anyway, he asked me to make him something cool from this piece and I’m hoping he likes what I’ve come up with!
Very nice Lisa 👍🏻
Thank you Jack, that really means a lot coming from you! 😁
@@LisaRamlow ugh...thanks for the correction. It's been a long time since...
Persévérance brought up the gem you search for all along. Stressful at some point but so exhilarating throughout the work. Lisa keep on bringing challenges like this on UA-cam anytime. I will stop turning myself just for the thrill. Pure excitement and increasingly glitches every now and again! Love you and your channel !
Thank you so much, I appreciated that! 😁
That is absolutely gorgeous, very nice.
Thank you!
Lisa, you did it again. You found a treasure hiding inside a lump of wood. Well done!
Thanks Crystal! I am really pleased with it - I was able to keep most of the figure and it finished way better than I was expecting it to after I gave up on sanding out scratches after eleventy-billion hours. I may need to get me a Phil Anderson Sand-o-Flex if I insist on doing pieces like this 😂
Lisa, this was spectacular......thanks for sharing......
Thank you Paul!
Well done Lisa. I especially liked the burnt rim. Great job. 👍🏻
Thank you Dave, I like the way the rim came out too 😁
Pringles Guy. Definitely the Pringles Guy. Love your work!!
Thank you 😁
🤣😂 The funy thing i was eating lunch when i hered eat something you look like a sisel stick 👍🏼❤️😎 Your turning is Just an amazing peace of art 👏🇨🇦❤️
😂 such a great movie!
Great Work Ms. Lisa!!! That’s Awesome!!!👍😁
Thank you Charity 😊
That turned out wonderfully. What a keeper.
Thanks Larry, I think Marky will like it 😁
The grain in that piece is outstanding! Awesome love! Great work!
Thanks Micheal - it really is a cool piece of wood with some very nice grain patterns 😁
Pringles guy! I love the torching bit. Beauty! 😄❤️
Thanks Lori! I see more torching in my future 😂
I love it. Smashing bit of turning.
Thanks Andrew! 😁
Love it. Great job thanks for sharing 👍👍👏
Thank you!
Very nice, that bowl turned out great. Thank you for sharing your video.
Thank you Mark, I appreciate it 😁
Love the pun 🤠. Good job as always 👍
Thanks James 😁
Hi Lisa, this is a hard work, in which you show problems and solutions. A really instructive video and a great result. Congratulations from France for your work.
Thanks so much Jean-Louis, I appreciate that 😁
Magnificent! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Joseph!
Your tools are awesome. Wish you always have beautiful products
Thank you! 😁
Wonderful video, fantastic piece of work! Thank you.
Thanks Kevin!
Absolutely beautiful!
Thanks Kevin!
What an adventure! Beautiful work.
Thanks Terry - it was a bit dicey there for a bit! 😂😁
Good job, beautiful bowl!!!! I even swore when she flew away from you! As if it had happened to me!!!
Hi Ivan! I did a good job of keeping it safe for viewing, though there were many obscenities muttered under my breath as I fetched it from the floor and assessed the damage 😂
I love it. Amazing piece of wood art.
Thanks Kevin!
Absolutely beautiful Lisa.
Thank you Jack 😁
This bowl is absolutely beautiful. Your friend will love it.
Thanks James, I think so 😁
Looks great and you never know how it is going to turn out until you are finished with it. I have a saying, "Some days chicken, some days feathers".
Hi Jacque! Yep. Some days the wood doesn’t really want to be what you want it to be! 😂
You are an artist!! Love your work
Thank you Jack, appreciate that 😁
Phenomenal! The best turned bowl yet. Your friend will be thrilled with the results.
Thanks Johnine! Wait til to see the cherry burl bowls I just finished 😍
Amazing piece! I learned in high school to respect your tools and pay attention to what you're doing. While in metal shop I left the chuck key in the chuck, then I turned on the lathe. You only ever do that once. The sound it made when the chuck key hit the metal catch pan under the lathe got everyone's attention. I'm just thankful no one got hurt.
Hi Mike! Yeah, I respect every damn tool in the shop, cuz the only one I’ve hurt myself with has been a hand chisel. Twice. 😖 Was holding a frame or something in my hand instead of clamping it down and stuck that damn chisel into my first finger and then a year or so later into my thumb. Doh! I use clamps now 😁
Lisa it’s really nice to see a video that honestly shows all the anxieties, decisions and hiccups in producing a work. I learn more from those than seeing a ‘smooth’ production from end to end. Fabulous and inspiring piece! Thank you from UK
Thanks Julian, I appreciate that. While I am by no means putting out instructional videos, I figure people can probably learn something from the mistakes as well as the successes!
I think one can relate to the process more with all the ups and downs and it shows that creativity does not always follow a straight line 😊
Great looking bowl! And all natural.
Thanks Lance 😁
I'm sure your friend will love this bowl. It's beautiful, but who would believe the hours it took to get there!! Burning the natural edge was the perfect finish. I love it.
Thanks Brenda. I think he’ll be pleased. 😁
Nice job, looks great. Well worth the time it took
Thank you Vern 😁
Lisa, OUTSTANDING !
Thanks Kenneth! It was a bit dicey there for a minute but I persisted! 😂
@@LisaRamlow I am a 75 year old Disabled Vietnam Veteran. I also am a Hospice Volunteer. I also am a woodworker and I make things for the families to remember their loved ones. You do good work.....I wish I had your skills.
Beautiful honey, glad you left the whole!!
Hi Pearl! It definitely adds character. Thanks for watching!
So much patience. Awesome job
Thank you Scott. I’m really pleased with how it came out 😁
I just love the blackened rim! Absolutely gorgeous!
I recently had a recommendation of your channel because the algorithm fails to show me many female woodworking channels... I am so glad I followed her advice! Amazing work and I think your narration is incredibly useful!
Thanks for sharing! 💯❤️😁👍
Thanks Lisa, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful bowl! Nicely done.
Thank you Kathleen😁
There are many skilled woodworkers (and other craftsmen) out there putting brilliant and highly informative content on UA-cam. What an incredible resource for anyone wanting to learn some new skills or just appreciate beautiful creation. However, as a recent arrival to your channel, what I find most distinctive, and what most garnered my subscription, is the extent to which you go beyond merely showing us what you're doing or even explaining how you're doing it but rather getting detailed as to WHY you're doing what you're doing, which goes much deeper to the core of the teaching and learning process. It helps cut through to the nuances of design and technique rather than assuming a given viewer already understands or will readily discern all of those both critical and ancillary points that make for beautiful, functional, satisfying and safe shop work. Thank you for better filling that niche. Cheers!
Thanks Matt, and welcome! I’m so glad you’re finding the channel helpful 😁
Amazing work as always!!!
Thanks Daniel, I appreciate it! 😁
Very Nice! Also a bit ... exciting.
Indeed! 😂
I absolutely love it.
Thank you 😁
Beautiful project!!
Thank you!
it is a beautiful bowl, thanks for sharing
Thanks Joyce 😁
Beautiful, thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
That is very beautiful 👍
Thank you 😁
I loved that video. The laser cutter was very interesting. Mostly, I enjoyed your excellent explanation. Thank you.
Thank you Martin, I’m glad you enjoyed it 😊
Just came across your channel today. Love it! Love listening to your thoughts. Beautiful piece!
Hi Terry! Thanks so much, I’m glad you’re enjoying the channel! 😃
It's really cool! Nice job!
Thanks Jesse 😁
@@LisaRamlow You're welcome!
Very impressed. I have been turning since 1964. That was a very difficult piece to turn. Your skills are great. Just a beautiful turning.
Thank you Frank, I’m getting better with each project 😁
The bowl turned out pretty cool I like it.
Thanks Jim 😁
When you said it was scary. I believed you before you said it. Haha. I was turning my first live edge bowl last week and got scared as soon as I started cutting the inside as I realised how far under the wings my hand was going. Another great job Lisa.
Thanks Kev! Natural edge pieces can be a bit dicey 😂
Awesome piece! Well worth the work.
Thanks Troy! 😁
Beautiful bowl came out really nice!
Thanks Stephen!
Gorgeous!
Thanks Frank! 😁
A beautiful piece Lisa.
It was a bit dicey there for a minute but I’m quite pleased with how it came out 😁
Turned out beautiful, Lisa. I wish my bowl would fly off the back of the lathe instead of beating my arm. LOL. The price you pay. Love your videos
I wish it would just stay on the lathe but it just doesn’t always go that way does it!? Thanks so much for watching 😁
Wow that turned out great Lisa!! Love it. Thanks for another great video
Thanks John 😁
Beautiful!
Thanks! 😃
Utterly unique and a very, VERY nice piece. Congratulations on keeping your head!
Thanks Pam, it was a bit dicey there for a bit! 😂
Stunning!!
Thanks Ian!
Thanks for helping to reinvent the Stealers Wheel🤣
😁
When I was learning to farm with draft horses I was told you aren't really a teamster until you've had a runaway, and keep going. I think that is the same with wood turning and blow outs. I had a bowl blank fly across the shop and land in a five gallon bucket. I will never have that happen again!
Hi David! Yes, having an “incident” definitely gets your attention though I think I’m always anticipating potential disaster 😂. Glad I was able to remount it and get a nice piece out of it 😁
Beautiful piece Lisa. Over 12 hours? Wow! Somebody better be very proud of that piece. It is a great piece of wood and you did a fine job with it. Way to go.
Thanks Doug, I’m quite pleased with it. The finished bowl was worth the effort I put in, and my friend Marky is a wonderful human being and an amazing artist in his own right. I think he’ll like it 😁
definitely spectacular.
Thank you 😁
Hard day at the office, but , wow ,what a beautiful result‼️.
Somedays there are shenanigans! 😂
Great work Lisa. I would totally love this if I were that friend!
Thank you Hashim!
I love the Stealers Wheel reference!!!
😃
Another beautiful turning. Totally awesome. Good job!
Thank you 😁
Wow Lisa - on so many levels ! A very hard, dense wood yet you took your time & conquered it ... Yay !! And such an uncommonly big piece - so lucky to have it to turn. And as usual a wonderful vid so ... Thanks and keep 'em coming🙏 Take care. -Mike😷
Thanks Mike! It was hard. And pretty dry. Moisture meter read about 15% in the middle while I was hollowing, but it was coming off in hot spirals that went crunchy in a matter of seconds! Quite pleased with it, and even more so that it didn’t explode on me!
@@LisaRamlow Yeah, them spinning TNT bombs are no fun 💥🤡
Astonishingly beautiful! Exceptionally well done!
Thanks Peter, I appreciate it!
Nice job came out really nice !
Thank you Jim!
Pretty brave turning a lump of tree shaped like that!
Certainly not one for beginners to try!
Beautiful end result and you still have all your fingers, wonderful!
Thanks Roddy! I’m definitely hyper-aware of where all my body parts are when turning something as wonky as this piece!
Wow, lots of work in that one but a very nice end result 😊
Thanks Ann, it was definitely not an easy turn but I’m pleased with the end result 😁
Definitely spectacular! And, next time you start to do a bowl that shape, you won't get any complaints from me. I love that shape!
Hi Karen! I also love that shape but doing it with a natural edge bowl is a giant pain! 😂
All of your hard work paid off! It is definitely beautiful!
Thank you! 😁
Beautiful!! I just love wood. All mistakes give character to a piece. As long as your not injured. Thank You so much . You crack me up with your verbiage .😂
Thanks Helen! It was a bit dicey there for a minute 😂
Really nice work!
Thanks Greg 😂
Gorgeous piece . I love the burning border.👍❤️
Thanks Wanda, me too!
A very nice piece of work.
Thank you! 😁
Outstanding.
Thanks Richard 😁
Good Afternoon , Lisa
I am a New CD Sub and I am very glad that I found your Channel !
Great Work on that Monster of a piece of wood ! It did come out
Beautiful ! Hope to see more of your work soon ! Take Care and Be Safe
Hi Larry, welcome! 😊 I’m quite pleased with this one and I think my friend will be too 👍
Beautiful bowl.
Thanks David 😁
This is proof that wood turning is a marathon not a sprint :) Beautiful piece!
Hey Mikk! Damn straight. This was an exercise is patience and persistence for sure but I am really pleased with how it came out. 😁
Hi, I just aquired a lathe and am going to learn to turn. I came across your channel and like what I see so subscribed to you. I am from Huntsville, Texas.
Hi there! I taught myself to turn by watching UA-cam videos - there are a bunch of great teachers out there! I learned a ton from Brian Havens, RoboHippy, Mike Waldt, Lyle Jamieson, and wortheffort woodworking on UA-cam and Stuart Batty on Vimeo. Learn the basics, be safe, and have fun!
Great stuff!
Thanks Miles!
The figure and inclusions in the wood, the irregularity of the edge, and especially the burning you did to highlight the edge, make this an eye-catching beauty.
Thank you Noah, I appreciate that 😁
Awesome work
Thank you!
pretty nice piece of work I really like it
Thank you Chico 😁
You are amazing Lisa
Aww, thanks Glenn 😊
Looks great
Thanks Brad!
I really like the way it looks.
Thanks Margaret, I think it turned out nicely and I think my friend will like it 😁

Who are you? Just want to know.
Ummm, since my channel name is my actual name, I’m thinking that should be self explanatory? Not sure I’m following you…
First class, Lisa!
Thank you Louis 😁
Beautiful bowl! Tough hunk of wood there and you conquered it. Great skill with the tools. Excellent narration. Ty for posting! Take Care!
Thank you Mike, I appreciate it 😁
Such beautiful work. You got a new subscriber...
Thank you, and welcome! 😃
Well done, worth the effort!
Thanks Scott! Do you also watch Shawn Graham? If yes, then I see what you did there! 😉😁
Beautiful piece Lisa! All that hard work definitely paid off... V
Thanks Mike! It was a bit dicey there for a while 😂
Your friend will be thrilled! Really nice work. It's so nice to see you progress so much. (And you were very good from the start.)
Thank you Stacey, I really appreciate that. I can still throw things off the lathe with the best of them! 😂
@@LisaRamlow Hahahahaha Well I consistently trip over air so...
Non perfection much appreciated. :)
After all the hours and sanding, that turned out beautiful, Great job!
You mentioned bowl shapes so I went through the house and my shop looking at what bowls I'd turned. Wow! They're all shaped close to the same! Guess I need an intervention! Thanks for sharing Lisa!
Take care, Dave
Thanks David! The calabash-style bowls aren’t quite so bad when they are not natural edge, but I still need to get out of that rut for a while 😁
