I think Scooby Doo Mystery Inc. still stands as the best example of how to do a more mature take on Scooby and the gang. The gang acts more mature, yes, but their personalities still heavily invoke the 60's cartoon.
I'd honestly be down for an older-rated Scooby-Doo which keeps the gang as close knit and harmonious as they usually are. There's a tendency for the gang to become more hostile to one another in the edgier Scooby media. It's not inherently bad, however there'd be something impactful about seeing that more wholesome friendship in grimmer circumstances. There can still be smaller interpersonal conflicts and tiff's in some episodes, but it'd be nice to avoid the 'split apart over differences and come together' plotline. Hell the start of Zombie Island, a beloved darker entry, has them all come together after drifting apart...because they still love and miss one another and just want another go. I'd like to see that energy bought to an R rated Scooby story.
Agred. I'm reminded of how a lot of anime & superhero fans derided the Zack Snyder Man of Steel film for missing the point of Superman, and when confronted by Snyder-fans who said "No, you don't get it. It's a darker, more mature take and you can't handle that because you're so imature" they countered with "No, we have nothing against a more mature Superman. But if you make Superman himself dark you miss the point of the character" and then, since they were both anime and Superhero fans, they pointed to Trigun. Trigun is how you do a dark Superman story. In that the main character, who is vastly overpowered compared to the rest of the cast, still is "handicapped" so to speak by the fact that he is an idealist in a very non ideal world and the struggle and toil it takes on him. How doing the right thing isn't the easy way out, nor the cowards way, but the right thing to do. A "dark" Superman story doesn't have to turn Superman dark, but make the world around him more dark and cynic and shows how he still fights on despite those circumstances. That's what two of the most beloved Superman stories (Superman vs. The Elite (aka "What's So Funny About Truth and Justice?") and Kingdom Come) did, and they are beloved classics for a reason. And I was reminded of that when I read your comment. Making the gang all hate each other and add drama in that way, yeah, you can do that. But it's more interesting to keep the characters and their dynamics and see how they react in a new environment and under new circumstances than to just "split them up" for drama's sake.
This reminds me of my idea for an R-Rated (or at least, more mature) Scooby-Doo fanfic called... SCOOBY DOOMSDAY. It's the ultimate Scooby-Doo love letter, while also being a far superior version of Scooby Apocalypse.

I’m only at the Fred catch phrase joke and I’m already cackling. Also the idea that that Shaggy just has an absurdly high metabolism is gold. As a fan of both shows the crossover gives me lots of feelings. Honestly the thing that would have made the Scoobynatral episode better was if the gang had post Zombie Island characterization and they were more disturbed by ghosts murdering people Han the fact they exist. Which culminates in the gang discovering that some bastard is forcing a dead kid to murder people.(What was actually going on in the episode!) Fred finally gets to use his catchphrase and surprise the real monster was always a normal greedy person! Dean has said multiple times he admires people who can deal with human evilness on a regular basis. It wold have been nice to see the characters have mutual respect at the end. But hey that’s just me.
By the way I never saw a single episode of Suoernatural except the Scooby crossover. I watched it only because it was Scooby-doo and I found it pretty good honestly
Honestly I think it could be interesting for an r rated scooby project to just be the gangs first encounter with a serial killer, like they're so used to it just being people after money or business so seeing the drama and tension of them investigating a killer could be cool
I'd highly recommend reading the novel Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero. It has the same kind of "scooby gang but grown up" vibes, mixed with some Lovecraftian horror and a lot of really great queer rep. I'd also recommend the parody musical The Solve-It Squad by Tin Can Bros, mostly starring performers some might recognize from Starkid Productions
I would have the gang all fill archetypes of detective shows, Fred is the gentleman investigator like Sherlock or Ellery Queen, Velma is CSI, Daphne is the "Noir" investigate with her fist one (where the fact she is a girly girl is part of the gag) and shaggy and scoob are completely unchanged.
It doesn’t have to be Scooby Doo related, but one idea I’d love to see done is to take that type of formula and dynamic, and see how a group of teen detectives would fare in a more survival-horror themed environment like Silent Hill or Resident Evil.
I have a terrible pitch So we take the gang and just have them fight horror movie monsters. I don't mean Dracula, or Frankenstein('s monster) I mean Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Micheal Myers, Ghostface, Chucky, maybe go for more obscure villains like Leprechaun, just a show where in each episode we get a new slasher for the gang to face (copyright will prevent this from happening). Don't hold back on the violence show a guy who's face was cut off by Leatherface, or someone getting their head messed up by the reverse bear trap from Saw, have someone get eaten by Pennywise. Just stick to the brutality level you usually see in the respective villains movie But stay true to the characters and maybe even have a "lets see who's under the mask" moment with Jason and then they see his face and immediately put it back on and remember "wait everyone's been saying his name's Jason" Imply that the characters have been doing this for awhile so they just are desensitized by the brutality. Other than that there's just the occasional swear except in the Chucky episode there all the swears are taken by Chucky At the very minimum give me a crossover with Ghostface and Chucky (in different movies) Again this will probably never happen but a man can dream

Look let’s be honest, we all knew it would be childish to bring it up but back in the day it was alway a guilty pleasure and now with interest coming back I feel I can finally be myself here without anyone laughing at me… Yes, Scooby-Doo 2 is not only better than the first, but also paved the way of me wanting to be a filmmaker by filling me with so much inspiration honestly, There’s a reason James Gunn is one out of three of the most influential directors in my life and creativity (the other two being Tim Burton and Miyazaki)
Oh yeah and I guess James Gunn did stuff like Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad I mean those are okay but Scooby-Doo 2 is clearly his masterpiece!
Okay I was just kidding on the reply as I love the heck out of the other Gunn films, but I’m pretty serious about Scooby-Doo 2 inspiring me to want to become a filmmaker
Everyone seems to forget that Velma was crushing on the gruff mechanic in Alien Invaders. So unless Scooby-Doo canon is like Archie’s and all the content is more or less stand-alone of each other, Velma has some interest in guys.
5:45 Don't lie, this whole video was an excuse to show off that weirdly good Scooby impression. Jokes aside, I really liked the video! You have some neat ideas about this concept and the Scooby brand as a whole.
I think a darker tone is great for it, but it doesn’t need to go as far as an R rating. I mean, mystery incorporated was pretty dark and still a kids show.
Ok, I'm going to take this moment very seriously because I'm the biggest Scooby Doo fan I know and I've been waiting for a more adult version of the franchise since I was 13 years old. My idea is a more adult version of the characters, the age they are in Zombie Island is perfect for me. Blood, nothing super exaggerated gore, deaths, suspense, even jumpscares. Some time ago I had an idea to make an animated miniseries with the same style of animation and dark tone as Zombie Island, in the series we would see the mysteries they find from the beginning of the journey until they reach Simon Lenoir's island, only taking that step of darkness and seriousness that, although it was noticeable, Zombie Island did not have due to being a children's movie. As for the characters, I would develop them a little more on a personal level to give them emotional weight. It would give them their own insecurities, aspirations, etc. Anyway. I hope to see something like this one day.
I watched the first episode of live action Mystery Incorporated for about six times and I love it a lot. Now I’m just trying to wait real patiently for Episode Two to come to UA-cam.
Honestly, what i always wanted to a gritty Scooby Doo series is something like Riverdale. not too much like Riverdale ('cause apart season 1 and 2 the rest is a mess) but there's a thing that the show did well: adaping a light-hearted thing in a mystery drama thing. I think the best way to do that show is taking some inspiration from what Riverdale do in their first seasons. The Mystery Incorporated fan project looks pretty good but i didn't like the choice to do paranormal stuff at the first season. i mean, what i would do if i do a teen mystery Scooby Doo series is to do in the first 2 or 3 seasons of the show just guys who are disguised as monsters and they make believe that they are actually monsters using special effects and in full Scream style they go to kill some people in the town. then in the next seasons introduce the more paranormal aspect of the show, like the Mystery Inc. during an investigation finds out that the main villain is collect something that allows to open a gate from another dimension and with this evocate real monsters and this is the main fulcrum of the last few seasons ( i imagine something like 5 or 6 season for this show). For Scooby i didn't think that make Scoob a normal dog is a bad idea. you can just make him important to Shaggy (one example of this is 'cause he's the only thing that his father gave to him before his death or something similar). Also i would like if they do a sort of 80s Dog-Cop movie thing where the dog is important to the story to resolve the Mystery, this would be fun.
If i were to make a more mature scooby doo series I'd make it realistic, just with paranormal activities around and I'd make scooby be a normal dog but when we get shaggy's pov the entire world is a cartoon and scooby is the one we see in all the older cartoons like he talks, has cartoon physics etc
@@jordanwright2072 Could probably work for a gag or two but idk about a consistent character trait. I can only think of 1 show that properly justified that trait in a character and it was never peak comedy. Would take some really good writers to not mess it up.
Another more sci-fi take on a "realistic" Scooby could be that he's a regular dog with a translator collar, like the ones in Up, so his thoughts are communicated, but don't come off as cartoonish.
This is cool, but I feel like if you want to do a mature take on scooby-doo, you should just adapt the Scooby-Doo Apocalypse comics. I know a lot of people have to mix feelings about it, but I fucking love that series
I wouldn't mind a R-rated Scooby-Doo movie but for me, I would prefer like a PG style of Evil Dead 2 with It's bloodless with mild violence. The monsters would be scary but it doesn't forget it's original cartoon's essence and humor. I don't like the overly gritty reboots where they try so hard to be edgy that it's unintentionally funny.
I thank my main issue with the show (from the admittedly little we have seen) is I don't think R-Rated Scooby Doo would work. Also where is Scooby? You did make a good point at the 1:45 but that doesn't make enough sense to me. (How are they going to adapt Shaggy without Scooby?) And this last part is just a nitpick, but the color they use on Velma's sweater is too yellow, it doesn't mesh to well with the characters skin tone, so maybe just make the sweater orange-er?
I’ve wanted an R-rated scooby doo movie/ show since I watched Gunns movies as a kid , the darker premise would just make for more tense situations and higher stakes , the mystery inc gang are all great great characters and I think they could be very nuanced if written correctly , I just want to see shaggy and scooby getting stoned in all honesty
I have watched the Negative 10 rewrite and it got me thinking about Scooby Doo Monsters Unleashed about changing some of the monsters that we got in the movie.
If they wanted to make a R-Rated Scooby-Doo cartoon, they should’ve adapted the Scooby Apocalypse comics into a adult animated series on HBO Max. That would’ve been awesome imo. Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated is definitely the best version period. I love that cartoon.
If you're interested in something like this you should watch "the solve-it squad returns" by the tin-can bros. It's a theater production that's clearly a scooby-doo parody while still being a scooby-doo adventure (in a really weird, twisted way). It's fun, it's free on UA-cam and you should probably watch it
6:36 I’m Sorry but Velma should Not be gay it’s pretty clear the original creators of Scooby Doo did not what that because as soon as they died they made Velma Gay And just because Velma is a nerd dose make her gay
Very interesting take on the concept of adult Scooby Doo. Also: Whoa! My list of things Scooby fans don't want in a story I actually put in my 2020 fanfic series gets longer and longer. Good thing I called the series INFAMOUS, cuz it might become very infamous among the Scooby community when it's finally finished and uploaded. 🙈
It would be spectacular if Scooby sorta had a Courage the Cowardly Dog characteristic on the team. Mystery Inc does what they do: solve mysteries and unmask villains. However, the supernatural aspect of the show is something only Scooby sees, and no one can understand what he’s saying except for Shaggy, who only understands him when he’s blazed out of his mind, and even then, he tends to not realize the severity of the situation.
On paper, a Scooby Doo series aimed at an older audience is a good idea, but it doesn’t need to be necessarily rated R. Just give us the same Scooby Doo charm we know and love but with a bit more of an edge in terms of its humor and tone. Don’t be afraid to add some innuendos about Fred and Daphne’s relationship, or Shaggy being a closeted stoner. Also, it’d be great to experiment more with the concept of real monsters and ghosts like in Zombie Island, Witch’s Ghost, or even Mystery Incorporated. Even include some in jokes or appearances from beloved side characters like Scrappy Doo and the Hex Girls. The most important part is to not oversaturate the show with sex and graphic violence. Keep it at a decent balance. I’d also toy with the idea of making the characters older like they were in the original DTV movies, rather than the typical high school juniors and seniors they’ve always been, put them in college and have them solve mysteries while either attending classes or off semester.
An R rated live action Scooby-Doo could work. But I think a live action Scooby-Doo HBO Max series would be better. Plus it’s a good idea for Fred dropping the f bomb. ua-cam.com/users/shorts6dd1PBX1WoA?feature=share Also, here’s who I would cast for the Scooby-Doo HBO Max series. Jacob Hopkins as Fred Jones Sadie Stanley as Daphne Blake Isabela Merced as Velma Dinkley Jack Dylan Grazer as Norville “Shaggy” Rogers Frank Welker as Scooby-Doo (because he’s obviously the best fucking voice for Scooby-Doo!)
I feel like a good way to address the fact that at heart Scooby Doo as a franchise is a draw for kids and you even posed the question; "Still for kids?" Is to kinda address it like the early Simpsons. It certainly had some risque moments, but never directly went "Hey Marge, lets have HOT STEAMY INTERCOURSE!!" I think it's a great show to let lead by example as it was very much an adult show, but never got so raunchy even when addressing topics that were progressive at the time. I.e. the episode where he found out his friend was homosexual in "Homer's Phobia" which depicted Homer being afraid because of society's norms at the time and what he had been brought up believing. I think the same thing could be true in alot of ways for an adult Scooby Doo show.
I’d really like a very mature comedy style Scooby Doo stuff. Sounds like fun if they could have any jokes they want without having to hold back (mostly).
I think a R-rated Scooby Doo can definitely work, but like you said, it shouldn’t try to be edgy and “adult.” There’s one element that would be essential to the film, camp. The concept of a talking mystery solving dog is inherently goofy and, if the filmmakers wanted to respect the original IP, they would need to acknowledge and lean into that. It’s not like it would even be that hard to do. Horror comedy is a super popular genre. But rather than a Scary Movie type horror comedy, I think something more along the lines of a Sam Raimi film would actually work great with the Scooby Doo cast!

Another more sci-fi take on a "realistic" Scooby could be that he's a regular dog with a translator collar, like the ones in Up, so his thoughts are communicated, but don't come off as cartoonish.

BEST CUT F-BOMB
I love the Scooby Vids Troy, keep up the good work!
I don’t like Velma being gay because I love the coupling of Velma and Shaggy along with Daphne and Fred being a couple.
Please do a Green Arrow Pre Write
I want a Rated R Deadpool and or howard the duck show
I remember when we should’ve got a Deadpool R-Rated animated series on FX. The shouldn’t have cancelled that.
your pronunciation is crazy, john constan tine and also studio jhiblii is crazy. all love tho ✊🏽
Heard you on Geeksplained! I love your takes
Just found your channel love the style
For a moment when you said it opens on a cult circle I thought you were literally just gonna pitch Solve-It-Squad
This is cool, but I feel like if you want to do a mature take on scooby-doo, you should just adapt the Scooby-Doo Apocalypse comics. I know a lot of people have to mix feelings about it, but I fucking love that series
It just feels like scooby doo meets scream
I wouldn't mind a R-rated Scooby-Doo movie but for me, I would prefer like a PG style of Evil Dead 2 with It's bloodless with mild violence. The monsters would be scary but it doesn't forget it's original cartoon's essence and humor. I don't like the overly gritty reboots where they try so hard to be edgy that it's unintentionally funny.
Yeah if they made it a more adultswim style show (samurai jack early seasons with some sprinkling of futurama in it) then it could definitely work
@@brandonhowell5096 What do you mean early seasons (Samurai Jack)?
That got me thinking: Imagine if Sam Raimi directed a Scooby-Doo reboot 🤯
I thank my main issue with the show (from the admittedly little we have seen) is I don't think R-Rated Scooby Doo would work. Also where is Scooby? You did make a good point at the 1:45 but that doesn't make enough sense to me. (How are they going to adapt Shaggy without Scooby?) And this last part is just a nitpick, but the color they use on Velma's sweater is too yellow, it doesn't mesh to well with the characters skin tone, so maybe just make the sweater orange-er?
Now ima become Scooby to take a stand and not because I was already wanted to
I’ve wanted an R-rated scooby doo movie/ show since I watched Gunns movies as a kid , the darker premise would just make for more tense situations and higher stakes , the mystery inc gang are all great great characters and I think they could be very nuanced if written correctly , I just want to see shaggy and scooby getting stoned in all honesty
5:01 5:04 5:07 love the references
R rated Scooby will be peak fiction
I have watched the Negative 10 rewrite and it got me thinking about Scooby Doo Monsters Unleashed about changing some of the monsters that we got in the movie.
Did not know this series is gonna be rated R
If they wanted to make a R-Rated Scooby-Doo cartoon, they should’ve adapted the Scooby Apocalypse comics into a adult animated series on HBO Max. That would’ve been awesome imo.
Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated is definitely the best version period. I love that cartoon.
Don't forget Robot Chicken , Harvey Birdman, and The Venture Bros has poked fun of Scooby doo
If you're interested in something like this you should watch "the solve-it squad returns" by the tin-can bros. It's a theater production that's clearly a scooby-doo parody while still being a scooby-doo adventure (in a really weird, twisted way). It's fun, it's free on UA-cam and you should probably watch it
it should be a shaggy and scooby stoner comedy
6:36 I’m Sorry but Velma should Not be gay it’s pretty clear the original creators of Scooby Doo did not what that because as soon as they died they made Velma Gay
And just because Velma is a nerd dose make her gay
They've been implying it for years??
valid points, but I still wanna see the dark timeline where the cw gets scooby doo and makes it a riverdale level so-bad-its-funny teen drama
Pls make more “where to start __” because they have really help get into more interesting comics.
oh this probably not too bad

It would be spectacular if Scooby sorta had a Courage the Cowardly Dog characteristic on the team.
Mystery Inc does what they do: solve mysteries and unmask villains. However, the supernatural aspect of the show is something only Scooby sees, and no one can understand what he’s saying except for Shaggy, who only understands him when he’s blazed out of his mind, and even then, he tends to not realize the severity of the situation.
@Will N what about them
I’d absolutely love to see you pitch a live action Looney Tunes!
ruh roh raggy
There's this comic with Scooby doo and zombies that I think could work well with an R rated cartoon
So you're telling me skilshare excited in 2002 when the gange broke up in scooby doo 1
Two words. Scooby Apocalypse. Yes! It’s real!
He better still have shaggy hair dammit
I love Scooby Doo so much.
An R rated live action Scooby-Doo could work. But I think a live action Scooby-Doo HBO Max series would be better. Plus it’s a good idea for Fred dropping the f bomb.
ua-cam.com/users/shorts6dd1PBX1WoA?feature=share
Also, here’s who I would cast for the Scooby-Doo HBO Max series.
Jacob Hopkins as Fred Jones
Sadie Stanley as Daphne Blake
Isabela Merced as Velma Dinkley
Jack Dylan Grazer as Norville “Shaggy” Rogers
Frank Welker as Scooby-Doo (because he’s obviously the best fucking voice for Scooby-Doo!)
Gumball Watterson as Fred Jones
How to make an r-rated Scooby-Doo movie: *Don’t do what they’re doing :)*
Actually jump scares and blood
Yes we need rated r Scooby doo
Have you seen the Scooby Natural crossover??
they could make scoob like Brian in family guy
10 hours and almost 1k likes 🔥🔥
Scooby doo has been doing the same for so long that I just think it’s cool to see a different take on it.
Meta humor and all.
I’d really like a very mature comedy style Scooby Doo stuff. Sounds like fun if they could have any jokes they want without having to hold back (mostly).
Thoughts on the amazing werewolf by night
Here's how you make R-rated Scooby-Doo: You don't.
But rather than a Scary Movie type horror comedy, I think something more along the lines of a Sam Raimi film would actually work great with the Scooby Doo cast!
i love ur videos
