🤯SRAM GX EAGLE Best Bang for The Buck! | NX Eagle Not Worth IT! SRAM GX Drivetrain MTB Review Instal: Join me and Anthony at Gotta Ride Bikes in my new hometown. If you are interested in my thoughts in regards to the NX Eagle please watch as they are towards the end of the video, as this video is more of an installation/tips video rather then a full NX and GX review. The Sram GX Eagle Drivetrain is the best budget mountain bike drivetrain on the market. Its insanely great value for the price, NX Eagle just loses, i feel too much value just to save a hundred dollars or so.

Xt is best bang for the buck. Double shifts to smaller cogs, instant shifting, stronger clutch that is adjustable. Compatible with Sram cassette and chainring as well
Doesn't tell why NX Eagle is not worth it.... What a Clickbait video!
At the end I talked about the loss in quality and weight is not worth the difference in cost of just 100 dollars . Also the fact that the 12 speed cadet is one solid peace is amazing for the price
@@MTBdropIN There are many things to consider what is best bang for buck. If you have the proprietary XD HUB then GX Eagle is way to go. But for others that have a Shimano/Spline Hub then NX Eagle is a better choice and the only difference for both is the weight and materials used but the features is the same for every Eagle groupset. For the cost and easily to upgrade I think NX Eagle is one of the best bang for buck.
Only if your hub requires it do I think it’s best bang for your buck, if materials and weight were not important factors we would all be ridding Walmart bikes 😜
MTBdropIN exept geometry matters dude.
@@MTBdropIN .3 of a pound for the casset isn't that much of a difference
As another commenter suggested, I also did not hear you give any reasons to support "NX Eagle Not Worth IT", as part of your title suggests. Towards the end of the vid (17:05) you touch on the NX briefly and say "I'll have to try that". I upgraded to the NX eagle from a 2x10 setup. I love my new drivetrain and believe it definitely helps me with the climbs. Aside from it being inexpensive ($375 MSRP, although you can usually find it for $300) there are other reasons to go this route. Aside from the 50 tooth cog, the NX eagle did not require me to get an XD driver body like GX, XO1, and XX1 require. Out of the box, the NX cassette is compatible with standard 8, 9, and 10 speed splined Shimano (HG) driver bodies.
dude great feedback thanks!
Hey Anthony! Just wanted to say you killed on it that install and set-up walk through! Came here looking for reviews, stayed to watch you work. Thanks man!
I ran a GX 1x10 on my hardtail for over a year, I recently bought a Yeti sb5+ w/ GX Eagle and it's great! Coming from a 1x10, I find I rarely use the easiest 2 gears, but they are great to have as bail out gears on steep lengthy climbs!!
I can't agree more, definitely on the same page!
My GX Eagle on Merida one forty 800 works like a charm.....over a year with rough riding never need a single maintenance...just regular washing and oiling~ still so smooth and quiet~!!!
That’s awesome so glad to hear 😎🤘
Good video. I have 3 mountain bikes in my house, one with SX, one with NX and another with GX. I know the difference between the 3, but they all perform with similar performance. Maybe my daughter's SX doesn't take the abuse as my bikes, but it rides just fine.
Great video, I also have the e13 chainring on my yet, it was great to watch your smash that piece of crap. I’m also planning to switch to the gx. Thanks for the install help.
finally, someone appreciates my destructive personality jk lol, right on brother thank you for the comment.
Gratz, I destroyed by GX cassette on the Texas rock gardens so I will be going by Gotta Ride to get a new one installed.
tell them you saw the vid and decided to come ;) ha ha thanks brother! sorry to hear about that though
Nice video footage of the whole assembly, good job!
Thanks!
Great instructional video!!
Can I straight upgrade my SX 1x 12 to a GX RD? The shifters should be compatible on all the Eagle range right?
NX is worth it! I’ve been running it one season of hard riding and I have zero complaints, I have ordered new wheels for this season and switched to XD drive and will be running the GX cassette, nothing wrong with my NX just being a weight weeny- it is almost 200g lighter
Yeah why does 200g seem so Munch 🤣
Really? I've seen some vids with complaints about shifting. That's why I am hesitant to change my groupset into SRAM NX
@@MTBdropIN I know!
I’ve made the swap including dropping an additional 200 off with my new rear wheel and I think I felt the difference for about 8... maybe 9 minutes 🤣
Oh well it’s at least increased the resale value a bit
@@whodafakru7668
I would imagine it might be set up issues, I’ve been a motorcycle mechanic for over 10 years and I still had to watch the SRAM install video about 10 times- this was my first build but once I got it dialed I have had zero issues with it
First mechanic I’ve seen in an extra shmedium button up!!
lol I know right lol
so you never said why NX eagle is not worth it??? or am i missing it? i have the NX eagle, no problems at all.
I talk about it at the end, but I just believe the actual build quality and the fact that you get one piece cassette is worth the extra 100. I love the NX thought, no problems and its a great system, I just think if you can choose the gx eagle is the best bang for the buck
@@MTBdropIN true ive been through 3 sram nx eagle derrailiurs I was about to give up in sram eagle but i bought a sram gx eagle and its great it has lasted allot and the shifting is better (sorry for my spelling english is my 2nd lenguage)
I have not had a issue either and I'm not a SRAM fan, I usually go on a abusive rant about their brakes,
IMHO NX is a wise choice for most non competitive bikers or even for the eventual bikers. It's a kind of 'SLX' of SRAM: heavier but all in all more resistant. It requires less maintenance while keeping all the Eagle technologies. The SX is a kind of 'Alivio': it keeps some tech but not all (specially the pulley) so it is predictably more rough. And 'mere 100 bucks' is not so... Last Amazon search gave me $418 for GX and $261 for NX...
@@MTBdropIN the cost of a new wheel for gx vs staying with the hyperglide splined for nx is what made the choice for me, yes i have 1 less tooth on the high end but if i want speed ill pull out my road bike. my upgrade path was from 3x9 alivio drivetrain to 1x12 nx and the nx is worls better in in shifting performance.
👍 📹
as always... Greattttt video!
Ha ha you made it 😜🤘
I love my NX Eagle on my Giant Reign. Especially coming from a 2x10 that i changed to a 1x10 on my Intense Spider. The Eagle was a nice change. But just like you said, it will not fix your climbing. Only time on the bike will better your fitness level and your climbing abilities. I recently went for a ride on my Intense and was surprised how well I was able to climb on the 1x10. My strength improved over this past year a lot. So you just need to ride what you have and your climbing abilities will improve no matter what drive train you have. Although, Eagle does make a slight difference, lol.
I know how you feel when a part is irritating and you just wanna pound on it with a hammer. But then I remember how expensive replacement parts are. So I always take my aggression's out on the trail and save those parts for fellow riders in need. If I can help out someone else, especially Veterans or Veterans with PTSD and they don't have to put out a single dollar to keep their bike up and running. Well then I will ship that part to them if they need it. Just a thought brotha.
Anyways, keep up the good work and soon we will have to get together and ride.
sounds like a great plan for a ride, I just destroy stuff because it makes people laugh lol
War Within MTB sram Eagle with an oval chainring for the win!!
😂
@war within MTB whats your email?
I have the same bike and did the same change over a few months ago ! So much better ! I even went with a 28 tooth chainring for the long steep climbs here in Ashland OR. Let’s ride !
Hell yeah brother come on down to Texas or send me a ticket 🎫 🤘😎
Eagle gx is awesome. Loving the 12 speed on my new Trek fuel ex 8. You will love it, quiet and crisp and the range is amazing, my dad runs the XO1 on his Hightower.
Dude right on 😎🤘
And I told you that B line needs to be set with you on the bike at sag! Any reason you aren’t running the crank bros stamps anymore?
yeah, but I wish I could try them again to see if I like but I really love race face atlas pedals as well
i have GX on my Canyon Spectral 6, it feels really smooth.
😎🤘 it’s a great peace of kit
Should have had somebody holding him back from punching the cassette at the end like in office space 😂
It’s a shame Intense discontinued the Recluse this year for the UK distributor, I really wanted to get a frame and build up the bike.
Geez must mean it’s gonna get an upgrade soon 😎🤘
I'm a little late to the party but maybe you can help me understand one thing. Why does he shift down 5 cogs to set the B limit setting? Wouldn't you want to be on the smallest cog as the guide pulley would be closest at that point? I'm sure I'm missing something. Other than me not understanding that point this was really great instruction on tuning the drivetrain..awesome video!
Good video. I have the 1x11 nx on my fuel 9.7 I've been considering going for the 12 gx or the 12 nx purely to get up one section of a climb up a mountain. I'd like to know how the 50 teeth compares with the 43i
I’ll keep you updated 😎🤘
There are plenty of 11sp 11-46 on the market....sometimes upgrades help riding up grades!
Switched to shimano 1x12 after trying the SRAM sx and xo and never looked back.
I think I’m gonna try
I have the Sram Nx 11 speed group set on my bike. I have had it for 2 years and no real problems. Was it worth it? Hell yeah! Instead of upgrading to a 12 speed I will get a new bike that’s a over all upgrade
😎🤘🔥
Great review! So exciting to see your reaction of the new drive system!
right on brother thank you!
I wanted to repair my 2003 Cannondale F800SL. It´s equipped with a Shimano drivetrain (XT and Deore mixed) and Magura Louise disc breaks.
The hubs are still perfectly fine, but the rest ..... new bottom bracket, new chain rings, new cassette, new rear derailleur rollers. Costs: 180€ and I still would have a 17 year old shifter with two old derailleurs and somewhat soft feeling triggers.
And then I realized that for around 100€ more I could upgrade it to an NX.
Yeah, maybe you are correct, that the GX is a bit more bang for the buck, but I had to replace the hubs, too, and while I can install the drivetrain myself, I cannot replace a hub. Or I had to buy new wheels. For 17 year old vintage bike. People think I am crazy for putting the NX money into it instead of buying a new XC bike. But I like the old Cannondale and the NX is what will keep it going for another few years.
;)
Just upgraded to 12 speed cuz my 2018 strive came with 11..big difference but i got my whole package for 350😁
ha ha right on man thats a great price, may the vibes be with you!
My NX 12 speed works flawless, it’s the best system I’ve ever used lol. You need to set the b tension screw with the guide at %30 sag or it will occasionally miss. If the nx isn’t working for whoever, they dont know how to tune a derailleur.
thats probably exactly my issue, I really don't and the average person does not eighther so it can turn in to a real pain
Just watch park tools video on indexing your rear derailleur, if it doesn’t work then watch it agian.. then let the air out of your rear shock and compress it to the 30 percent sag mark so it stays there while you set the b tension screw with that red guide. I don’t even own a bike stand, I just turn the bike over and do it.
Or if you hit a rock and bent it like I did. The hangar bent but unfortunately so did my NX derailleur. I just bought a gx and will install it later so hopefully it isn't as flimsy as the nx was.
The Dude- the gx is lighter so I wouldn’t count on it being stronger.
@@swpa8742 Ill be extra careful then. I guess that's just the drawback of 12 speed. They are so precise that any little bend will mess up the alignment/indexing. I almost considered going back to an 11 speed.
Now we run the same 👌🤙
Lol you bought one a?
When your using a new chain will it stretch after awhile and cause the derailleur to need tuning?
Yes potentially
1x11 here, with 10-46 Garbaruk cassette that doesn't suck ass like the e13 one. Happy with it no need for 1x12 at all.
right on brother thank you for sharing ;)
Did you, by chance, try pedaling backwards with the chain on the 50t cog? Some 1 x 10, 11, 12 drive trains have the chain fall down 1, 2, 3 cogs when you are in lowest cog. Just wondering.
yeah we tested that it was good
I still run a 1 by 11 haha! But we usually shuttle up, and bomb down
1x11 is over kill then 😂
Just bought an Intense ACV 3 days ago. I eyed up the recluse but Intense is giving away a set of e thirteen carbon 29 wheels. I wanted best of both worlds. Anyhow good content. My bike came with the NX eagle and felt good on the first 2 rides.
right on man, don't get me wrong its an amazing system anyway you look at it, I'm just saying for the extra hundred I think the GX is far better bang for your buck, but if thats what It came with I would not be any unhappier, congrats on the new whip!
Hey how do you like the oval chainring ? I put one on my bike but i didnt like the feel i didnt change the chainonly the chainring . Maybe thats y it didnt feel right . In the video the mechanic says he sizes the chain to the oval chainring
I love it, buy one
JFYI oval cogwheel has an effect when you riding with clip less pedals otherwise you waste a money and pedal power.
thanks for the info 🤗
With all of the eagle you can pick whichever part you want Ex. NX cassette and GX everything else
Yup I love that
@@MTBdropIN makes it super convenient for people that dont want to switch their driver body on their hub because they can just use NX cassette and GX everything else
I completely agree,
Using NX rd with xx1 gripshifter smootest set ive ever owned so far
Nice addition! Are you still riding around SA ?
Yes sir 😎🤘
@@MTBdropIN have you tackled goverment canyon yet ?
not yet sir.
lol reminded me of that scene from office space where they smashed the printer...
I just ordered the NON Eagle NX. Going on a bike that was originally $350. Just put $750 into it.
Dude nice, send some pics to my Instagram when done love to see it 😊
"Good to be a gangsta" by The Ghetto Boys would have gone great with the cassette smashing.
I'm on a 1 x 8 still, I have the Gx crank and nx everything else, but I haven't installed it yet.
Install that shizzz!
@@MTBdropIN Just installed the the groupset. Whoa!!!!! no comparison to before, I'm used to good drive trains but this set is off the hook! GX everything, NX Cog. (not running boost on the rear wheel)
cool channel .. option 3 shop local.. so places like Got to Ride can stay in business.
😎🤘
You didn’t mention of the gx eagle needs a xd driver.does it need one?
oooh ill check for you
my bud just got a new GX eagle, we think they installed the boost crank arms wrong cause his chain angle is way to much on the taller gears, which of course is messing with his shifting
That sounds weird I’d have it looked at
yeah I told him to take the bike back and point it out, I think probably a washer on the wrong side or something... they might have rushed the build or something. I have read that the GX eagle has a break in period and will feel better after a 100 miles or so
I have sram gx and it is epic!
😎🤘
Mate the NX is worth it as it (in some cases) can be cheaper the GX is a bit lighter but it doesn’t mean its not worth it.
Agreed, for me I just don’t feel it’s worth it, the benefits of the GX over the NX for the little bit of extra money is just too good to pass up. I have been known to rock an na chain from time to time.
I heard it the other way around that the extra 150 for the gx is almost no difference
Ok no I went from a 11 speed to this and it is very very noticeable
What stem are you using? It looks hella short.
Renthal apex
Bro, A lot of boys saving money and you r hammering the cassette. 🤔
what?
That dude is huge, seems weird that he would be into endurance racing.
Ha ha lol
I don't ride pro level. I have no intentions to. I take a break every so often and never try to kill myself on the mountains. NX eagle works just fine.
😎🤘
Can I drop a 1/12 on a 27.5 inch rear wheel like
There a lot of bikes with a 27.5 and a 1/12 I would take your bike to a shop to see if your rear hub will support it
Smashing old cassette! Lol!
ha ha finally someone gives me cud's for this lol .
I have the SX set up can I switch it out to GX?
You should be able to ask bike shop just in case sram changes minor things over time
I thought nx used the shimano splined hub, whereas the gx used the SRAM XD driver hub? When you upgraded I didn’t see you changing the hub body???
I upgraded from the x01
1x11
Was the drive train you had on their better than the GX
Yes it was xo1
You paid how much!? 500$ for a gx setup is really expensive. I have the same setup as you and paid 250$ off the shelf.
sram gx with the cranks is 500, if you got it all for 250 then they mixed the price tags.
You should give it to me rather than destroying it. 😯
Lol
How did he know how many links to keep in the chain for the new 1x12?
I can't say unfortunately :(
@@MTBdropIN no worries just curious. love your stuff, keep it up
😎🤘
well normally you leave 2 more links when sizing the chain, and he left 1 more to compensate for oval ring, as he said ^^
Very misleading title, I thought it was an actual comparision but was more of an unboxing and install video
Yes, there was some nuggets in there though, in regards my thoughts of both towards the end . I get it though I’m sorry if you felt your time was wasted. I do my best to try and provide value to help you guys out. Care about you guys a ton!
Love my NX set up. No need for GX.
How often do you hear creaking from your rear casset?
Never been happier with my NX either. I've put probably close to a thousand miles on mine without issues. Of course, I maintain it, proper cleaning, etc.
So what was the basis no NX not being worth it?
honestly weight and the quality for just a little more money. Basically, GX is best bank for your buck.
Is your old deraileur workin fine you wana sell it
Sure I think it’s fine can’t be sure how much?
That guy needs a bigger shirt. Looks like it used to fit him in high school.:)
🤣🤣🤣
What is hysterical is how they have everyone ready to pay such dough for 19th century tech. OK the NX is not so terrible.
Lol 🤣
why dont you change the front chainring... its better for the drivetrain and chain
I did, I did a second video the same day on oval chainrings
Does it bother anyone else that it seems like he is purely swapping to the Sram 1x12 because it is popular?
He doesn't even seem to understand what the benefit is.
I guess it didn’t bother 50,000 what is this information that I’m apparently missing, and news flash 99% of mountain bikers do things cause it’s popular! Thus, it probably only bothers 1% of people who watch. Sorry I’m on one today 🤣
right... who's on that 1x11 anymore lol... Im sitting with that 3x9 life lol
lol right on brother, right on !
i have 3x9 its the way forward 🙄
sorry, love my 1x11 and don't need anything more.
The end of the video is very telling.
In what way?
Whoever's mom that is, is in trouble. She looks really pissed!
What 😂
How much does an upgrade like this run for?
If your cranks are already compatible then around 300
MTBdropIN what do you mean if the cranks are compatible?
I said it wrong, I did not need to crank arms cause I liked mine and I did not need to buy the gx crank arms
What, if u donate that to your viewers we love to have it.
Donate what?

Here is a very good comparison between NX and GX
😃🤟
That is quality content!! thans man!
I had sram NX, GX and XX1. GX was the best for me. XX1 look nicer, but it so fragile and "delicate". I think is more suitable for XC bikes. NX and GX are stronger.
Thanks brother, thanking you for letting me know I love thisb😎🤘
I think the E13 cassette is awesome! It takes two seconds to add grease between the two sections and also has more range than SRAM Eagle.
yeah, but I don't have to buy the extra tools and take the little time I have to get it working right. its just not for everyone, but I hear you though, however its a 1x11 so I don't know how it has more range then the 1x12?
@@MTBdropIN e13 Trs+ cassette has a 511% gear range, slightly more than the gx eagle

No sir it’s now part of a wall art piece I created
That's a lie
The only difference between gx and nx is the material but their performance are both the same.
Not necessarily, there is a difference but yes they both shift
MTBdropIN says the guy who can't say how many tooth he has on his chainring lol
Yup 😎🤘
NX I wouldn’t go back. Waste of money and time. Spending more goes a long way and more happier in the long run.
There is no difference nx is just as good uses same tech as all the sram series just heavier and cassette has 1 tooth less than the other other 3,granted the cassette is one piece on gx and above but nx is more practical because of shimano friendly fitting, I have nx on both my bikes but plan on putting xx1 on supercaliber and 0x1 on the Roscoe 8, the sram drivetrain range nx to xx1 are all very good!!!
Ehhh I’m really down on the eagle right now lol
Why’d you need to smash that old cassette!? You could have just gave it to me 🙁
I would not put that crap on you bro!
Xt or gx?
🤔
I had GX Eagle on two bikes, it’s cheaply made flimsy crap, grass can bend the cage. NX is cheaper I guess it’s even flimsier...
Not saying it’s equivalent to higher end stuff, l budget masters here
MTBdropIN My problem is that its quality is not comparable to 11 speed SLX either...
I don’t believe that’s true
yeah they are all pretty sensitive I hope in time we will get away from deraileurs
Sad part is you don’t even need 12 gears 😭
I love them and I have had 1x11 and I love 12, and yes one could say you don’t need 11 but we opt for 11 too. It’s knew technology and new trends that constantly push forward 😎🤘 it’s America baby lol jk
Just so you know I’m just having fun banter 🥰
my top pulley wheel exploded the other day and it has destroyed the mech and my fkn chain

@@MTBdropIN sometimes that stuff helps
Seriously lol
Clickbaity video, hasn't ridden NX hates on it anyway. Says 1 by 11 is a thing of the past but not all of us have money to upgrade and the e*thrirteen cassette can really help to increase the gear range and has a wider spread than eagle because of the 9 tooth. I'd never heard of the problem with the squeaky cassette and worldwide cyclery, your sponsor, seemed to love it as well. Thought this channel was alright before, my opinions a bit tainted now.
I think this is a good peace of content! Worked hard and I go over and beyond for my viewers I’m not worldwide Cyclery nor do I have the benefits of parts and riders at hand. If you are looking for a reliable tech channel then wwc is where it’s at, this channel is about more then a tech channel, I do the best I can with what money and time allows for and I think I do a pretty dang good job. But you are enetitled to your opinion , shred on brother 😎🤘
