As great as comparing these two is. Honestly both of these for the price are excellent and even tho I always prefer shimano if my complete bike is coming with either of these I’m happy. Because both quality components and it doesn’t hurt as much when I need to replace parts or wear the whole thing out. Performance may be improved in the higher level models but not to the point where the price difference is worth it

Im doing the same to my brother’s bike. Keep in mind that you will have to change the crankset. Since the chainrings are riveted to it!

My NX was a bit fussy from the outset and hasn't been very durable. About to replace with XT shifter and SLX mech.
I have the m5100. And i am very satisfied with it. I will only upgrade de jockey wheel for some with ball bearing
Both manufacturer's drivetrains always felt the same to me. But since i totally prefer Shimano brakes over Sram, I just use Shimano drivetrains for the i-spec EV.

I very much need a drivetrain, so I'd love to win the giveaway. I have a bike much like the one you fixed up for your friend, It's actually weird how similar they are. It's around a 2006 XC full suspension bike with a Fox fork. I am pretty happy with it, as it's hard to find decent used bikes where I live, and I cant afford to spend $2,000+ on a new one. It is great to own a full suspension, but my 2006 Deore XT drivetrain is extremely worn out. If I put any torque on the pedals when accelerating, the chain completely slips over the gears on the cassette, causing the pedals to jolt forward. It happens through every gear after the first 2 easiest gears. A new drivetrain would certainly bring my bike back to life.
So I’ve got a cousin I’m trying to get to ride with me and IV offered to tune up his bike , but it hasn’t been tuned or maintained in years. So I’m thinking he will need a new drivetrain . Please help me get him out on the trails , I just got back into bike after 15 years off them, and he’s been off his bike for about ten. So I know it needs some tlc. Mine was stolen about 14 years ago , so this past summer I got a new one to ride . But this coming season I want a riding buddy , help me prep one :) . And yes I’d like to see a long term run down on the durability of the two drivetrains. Keep the videos coming!

Watching this video for a second time. But for different reasons. I have now bought a bike. It came with the sram 11 speed. After a ride I still don’t like the shifters and want to switch to Shimano. I’m looking to pickup a shimano shifter and derailleur and use on the same chain & cassette. Any known issues with this?

I just found out that Specialized upgraded their drivetrain for the Sirrus X 3.0 from 1x9 microSHIFT Advent to the 1x10 Shimano Deore for the 2021 model. overall i really like the bike but I feel like its missing something at that top end and the microSHIFT Advent is just clunky, multiple issues with the crank and chain drops. just feel like i need to try something new.
I own a 2021 (or 2020) Cannondale which has the M5100 groupset, but the latest model also has Microshift. No experience with that, but can't imagine its a upgrade

Sram have clutches but they wear out quickly And there not very good to begin with

In my opinion a think SRAM is better to shimano just because from looking at my mates bikes and comparing each when I went on it just felt like the chidr was a lot smoother

Why is your fork installed the other way round?
Would be interested in the update on the NX. Just got a bike with NX and have a lot of negative stuff about it, not sure if a lot of the issues come as it wears in or if they are present from new. My intention is to race XC with the bike, hoping to get the season out of it and then in the winter swap out the derailleur, shifter, chain and cassette for SLX or XT, which would save some decent weight and seem to be very positively reviewed. Thinking of keeping the NX crank and just swapping to a Shimano compatible chain ring.
What's the bike? I've raced a lot of XC on an SX Eagle groupset with an NX cassette and I have no complaints.
@@Fred_the_1996 Its a Norco Revolver FS 2. So far so good, only one XC race in my area this season but have put >1000kms of trail riding on it. I had a typo in my first comment should have said "have heard a lot of negative stuff" Still intend to upgrade to GX/X01 components as things wear out an break if it comes to that before I pick up a new pick but other than being a bit rough and noisy shifting it has held up and worked fine so far.
On the topic of chain retention, I got a Spesh Fuse with NX 1x11 in February 2020, and rode it suuuper hard all year, and didn't drop a chain once.
What brakeset do you use then sir?

@@ernestooswaldohoffmanndeol4999 Minha bike veio com sram SX, mas achei muito ruim a precisãoe principalmente para descer do cog de 50 para o de 42, demorava uma eternidade. Coloquei o deore para testar e meu cassete e corrente eram novos, então mantive sram e vou deixar para colocar o cassete deore quando for trocar o sram, aí troco o cubo também, pois o meu não é compatível, já que o sram é 11-50

I'v got Sram NX 1x11 and I'm about to change it to Deore RD M5100 and M8000 XT shifter. Do you think the Sram cassette will be compatible?
I've tried that but with an SX and it doesn't work well. It works at first but after some time the chain starts jumping around and it stops working well

Yes, the shifter is the Deore's weak link, it feels mushy and shifts really badly, an XT shifter makes it perfect

I upgraded from an SX to NX Eagle, and the NX is super crisp when everything's freshly tuned-up :)

I own a 2021 Giant Talon 3. I want to upgrade from my current 2x7 groupset to Deore M5100 1x11 groupset. Do I have to change the wheelset and rear hub?
U need a new rear hub with freehub body

@@ventador7761 sure. U can get deore M 475 rear hub or any mtb rear hub with free hub body. Any hub that supports anything above 8s will be right for you. But please make sure the no of spoke holes Match your wheel.
Sometimes it can be expensive to buy a hub, new spokes and built the rear wheel so it might make more sense to buy a brand new rear wheel from decathlon or a bike shop. It may cost less than building up your wheel. 😁

I’ve had a couple friends with nx and they have long term chain retention issues and the clutch is not adjustable and slaps around pretty bad
Yep I have the same problem! I bought a new bike with NX drivetrain. First ride was perfect no chainslap, nothing. Since then Ive only ridden maybe 250km and the clutch is already weaker and my chain slaps to the frame. I wanted to give sram a chance but this is unacceptable for me.
Yea, Sram derailleur are amazing, shame the clutch is so weak
The NX derailleur is far superior in the long run. More robust build and requires less maintenance compared to Deore.
Are you sure about that? What about the NX Derailleurs being lose and shakey where you end up having to replace the washer rings to prevent the derailleur from shaking/flopping around
Hi do the Shimano cassettes fit the Sram hub?
It depends. If it's just the standard hg freehub on your bike than you can use any brand cassette but sram and shimano do have there own standard for freehubs. Sram is the xd driver, looks like a almost smooth body. Shimano has there microspline freehub. Xd and microspline are not interchangeable. And there only made that way to have a tooth count lower than 11 by essentially making the freehub just a tad bit smaller in there own way.
NX for higher gear ratio and better longevity on SRAM coating. Also NX Eagle sounds cooler than Deore.

Deore any day... avoid any of the SX, NX and GX SRAM Eagle stuff - ride nicely but fall apart. Have you wiggled a SRAM 12 speed rear derailleur lately? Seems only the top 2 echelon products are designed to last...shame
I have the sram gx from a new bike with boost hub and its been excellent , not had to adjust it at all in 1 year of lots of off road riding.
I have Scott Scale 960 with sram nx 12 speed cassette that only after one month have play and makes terrible noises.
It is complete junk.
I had cheep 26'' bike with shimano alivo drive train, which I have ridden for 10 years without any issues.
With the Deore 5100 any upgrade option is excluded, there is no better compatible part. So for thisreson only I would chose the NX where anytime you can change just one part to World cup level.
M5100 is compatible with xt and slx shifters and derailleurs. It's even compatible with sram nx stuff if you prefer a sram shifter or already have a sram cassette.
@@chairmanmeow8388 M5100 is 11 speed system. Therefore any upgrade with new parts is excluded, you ca match with older slx, xt, xtr -s but those do not handle the 51 cog (max 46) rear chainring, so you have to put a goatlink . As I said: going with the NX you get the already 12 system so you can buy any sram eagle part or even shimano 12 speed components can be compatible

I have the Deore 12 speed and my friend have the NX. NX shifts more smoothly but Deore's built different and more durable

The picture is a bit deceiving - there is WAY less space in the center of the frame than it shows. The suspension connection takes up the entire thing. So I needed to attach my battery on the bottom of the frame and my controller on the top. Instructions for assembly were lacking but honestly it wasn't too hard to figure out even though I have very little bike knowledge. Watched some youtube videos on adjusting the disk brakes but that was it. Still, I am loving it and very happy with the purchase.
You compare 12x SRAM with 11x Shimano, so if you want 12x there is no choice if you have HG freehub body.
I have a shimano and the new bike i am looking at at 3k has nx. A friend had nx and i felt it war hard and not as smooth as the shimano. I know it is eagle but i need smoothness and precision and shimano has that at the demore level. Im afraid of spending more money and not getting somehting in not gonna be confortable. And I can't test it...

@@zencro-bs9506 I finally bought a Enduro cqrbon frame from specialized which came with sram GX. I had a really hard time with the shifting from the beginning. Speacilized couldn't make it work right taking there once or twice. I tried another mechanic and did better but after a while I discovered it was the long chain. Finally that mechanic was able to fix it and I haven't had any major problems with it since then. I can say having a 10 gear shimano deore and 12 gx sram, shimano remains softer and agile. While sram at the gx level is precise and works as expected. I can tell you everything about the bike and the shifting but... after watching some canyon bikes, trek, and others pass by me or owners talk to me. I think the big difference comes to life expectancy and quality. The more you spend, the more durable of a product you will obtain. And the more expensive it is to fix. If it was up to me. I would probably stay with shimano (because I like the softness of it and the easy setup and leave it alone) and try to go up on the shimano scale. But really either company is fine. At the end we all get used to what we get.
@@zencro-bs9506 one more thing. Sram doesn't stay right for too long. It tends to want to be maintained more often. Take into account that the marin i had and the enduro that I have now work under two different conditions, one more on trails, the other more under enduro trails You could say the enduro takes more of a beating (gx) but the other (shimano deore) just stays well put and precise for too long (like for months without touching it and it works perfectly. And I love that about shimano)

@zencro-bs9506 shimano has 4 levels. 1. Alivio 2. Deore 3. SLX 4.DeoreXT. I've had 2.deore and it worked perfectly for florida and NJ trails. 10 gears. Now when you go 12 gears, the mechanics have to be more precise, that's probably why I feel the Sram GX is giving me a harder time with the setup and taking it more often to the mechanic. So this depends on your riding style. If you want a reliable product for normal trails, no fancy enduro terrain, you will be fine with shimano SLX and sram NX. If you are riding more enduro trails with more rocks, more crashes and just more demanding in general. Then sram Gx or shimano XT are your options. As for me, I do ride enduro trails but I am not any good by any means, that means i give my bike a hard time and rely on it quite a bit. I use GX ar the moment, but probably will end up with. Shimano XT on my next bike. I just have had such good experiences with the deore that it is hard for me to change my mind, and gx has not proven to be as set it and forger it. It wants to visit the mechanic more often...
Shimano had a better granny gear? Definitely what I need although my climbing is a bit better than a granny.
My shimano acera is messed up so I cant shift to the largest cog on an 11-32 cassette LOL
Deore is the only derailleur from shimano specific build for mtb.. That why you messed up with acera..
Great review, think that the sram is better than the Shimano because of the derailer cage lockout, the all back cassette looks way better and you can mix and match parts from the SRAM Eagle family so you could put on a fancy oil slick Chain or a nice xx1 shifter for a more crisp shift. But great review!
the same you can do with shimano system. Sram you always have to constantly tweak the transmission and you find yourself using very specialized tools to fix or tweak. sram is trash.

In my country, Shimano parts are more expensive than Sram.
Where are the weight differences? You should weigh and compare each component. the main difference will probably be in the Casette 12sp vs 11sp. SRAM shifting is always superior to Shimano so I don’t believe you there. especially in muddy conditions another thing you didn’t test. That makes your video biased towards Shimano. Shimano is very good cost but also lacks longevity another point you haven’t raised or tested. I think you could have done a more thorough test
It's funny because you're stating the opposite of reality with each sentence. Deore is not only more reliable, lighter and cheaper, it also has a much superior shifting feel and stays in tune forever so you don't have to mess with it. Can't say the same for SRAM stuff below X01. Shimano is just on another level and always has been. And if you get into XT or XTR, there's no need to even think about SRAM ever again.

nx is dogshit tbh the derailleur just jumps around on rough terrain makes me think my chainstay broke or sth,horrible.Deore on the other hand has a better clutch much more quiet.Shifting is also better on shimano HG system.
