As a life long Ranger fan (I am 58 years old) I have to say two things: 1) I absolutely hated all of those Stanley Cup winning Islander teams and 2) Mike Bossy was the greatest pure goal scoring winger I have ever seen
You had a LOVE - HATE - relationship just between two NY Teams ! Good on You !

You got to see probably the two greatest pure goal scorers within ur division. Bossy in New York for the Islanders and now Ovi in Washington. Gretzky has the record (for now) but those 2 are probably the most pure snipers in NHL history. I missed most of Bossy's career as I was born in 83 but watching Ovi has been a pleasure. I've heard about the greatness of Bossy and I've tracked down old games to watch on You Tube and Bossy was a great one for sure.
I can say hated this team at the time however I would recognize now they were one of the two best teams of all time. I also consider now Mike as my favorite player from the 80s...time gives you more perspective.

There is so much recency bias with the superstars that have emerged the last several seasons. The NHL has done a much better job lately of marketing it’s stars, not so much 40 years ago. Unless someone is a die hard hockey history fan, or maybe if they are an Islanders fan because of where they grew up, not many people from the younger generations would think of MB if you said “give me your top 10 or top 20 list of all time greats”.
His name is generally not included with the Orr’s, Gretzky’s, Lemieux’s etc., but it probably should be.
Unfortunately his career was cut too short from injuries. I stand by my original statement, he is under appreciated by many

I don’t know how you say that with Ovechkin in the mix. Ovi- if around in Bossy’s time would have doubled these totals. Bossy in today’s game doesn’t repeat this.

I'd put Patrick Roy in there as well. His numbers are staggering. He created the template for most goalies after him. They all wanted to be Patrick Roy.

And IIRC, in Game 50 he needed 2 goals still late in the 3rd period (maybe last 5 minutes) to reach 50 goals for the year. And the game was tight - when he lit the lamp twice at the end to get there.
Btw Bossy does lots of commentary for french television (habs) in Montreal. I’m sure he’ll appreciate this Shannon.

All this in 10 seasons and left the game at the age of 30. Like a Boss-y! A tenacious sniper like no other.
I could never imagine the toll that going to 5 straight playoff runs to the Final had on those Islanders' careers. Mike's game would fit in well today and with advanced medical treatment, he could have possibly played longer.
Mr. Bossy's back issues were not the result of a specific injury from a hit etc-he had a genetic issue that caused his spine/discs to degenerate that was accelerated by his skating style

5 straight finals, four straight cups, the Islanders were able to out tough the Flyers and out score the Oilers they could do it all. Probably the greatest hockey team of all-time and in the conversation for greatest sports team of all-time.
100% agreed. 19 straight playoff series wins is a record that will never be broken. The Isles were the best team, ever.
From 1975 to 1984 a ten year stretch the Isles failed to make the final four only once. From '79 to '84 a six year stretch they either finished first overall, won the Cup or were in the finals. Four straight Cups, five straight finals. Throw in a record 19 consecutive playoff series wins and you have there a team that transcends mere 'competitive'. Skill, heart, grit, toughness - mental and physical - discipline, character and the will to win were all there until injuries and time conspired against them. It took a super-skilled Oilers team who the Islanders swept in the finals the previous year to finally end the run. A true heart and soul dynasty team that I honestly believe never fully received the recognition they deserved.

I got to know his brother Chris, who sadly passed away a few years back, through the hockey card community. Both brothers were class acts and will be sadly missed.

One of the best pure goal scorers to ever play. There is a great Pat Lafontine interview where Pat says he picked his brain about shooting, and Bossy told him he would deliberately try to put the puck on its side and shoot 5-hole, because it made the puck that much smaller.

Bossy was a sniper. Scored a goal about every 4th shot. It bugs me when they say that Ovechkin is a sniper. Ovechkin is a volume shooter. Great goal scorer, yes. But Ovechkin's shooting percentage is roughly 15%. Average. BOSSY, on the other hand, was far and away, a more dangerous shooter.

Best player in history that I've seen by far without injury and if the islanders played like the other teams of his era he would have broken 1500 goals easy he was too good not to

Born in 77. Leafs fan. With numbers like that why is he not in more conversations? 5 60 plus goal seasons. Crazy.
Bossy is my all time favorite hockey player. Every sport I ever played I took 22 in his honour. Talk about mixed feelings when he scored the OT winner versus the Canucks in game 1 of the '82 cup. Of all the people for Snepsts to cough the puck up too. Pretty sure there was under a minute left in the OT period as well. If I recall correct he also had the game tying goal as well.
When Bossy scored on the gift from Snepsts there were 2 seconds left in the first OT. That pretty much was the series right there.
Excellent Analysis. Thanks for all your research. Mike Bossy was one of my favorite players of that era. I was a Flyers fan in the 70s and early 80s. Supremely talented hockey player. I'm in my sixties and have watched the game for 50 years.
To A. J. Far. Me too 50 yrs. There are lots of differences in the game pro and con but back then he was a marked man and checking Was a lot more and a lot more vicious he would never have to worry about that in the last 20 years the game is changed that much

good point that people always overlook, the training is so different now. If Bossy was around just 10 years or so later he probably could have fixed his health issues and played at least another 8 years. I think and it not really a giant revelation, the trap would have been the one thing that would have keep his goal numbers down a bit. but he was such a great scorer and they always find the back of the net. He is the Sandy Koufax of hockey, career way to short. Pure Hall of Famer, put up godly numbers is a short period of time that 98% of their peers would take more than double the amount of games to touch.

Imagine how Rangers fans feel...they had TWO chances to take Bossy in the 1977 draft and passed both times (Deblois and Duguay).

@@bb-gc2tx Take it easy sport. Tough to compare players/teams across generations due to today’s more advanced training and equipment. You’ve got to look at their eras and how the team played during that era. Although the 70s and 80s were a “run and gun” style, Al Arbour’s Isles played a responsible defensive game. Ovi only played defense while Barry Trotz was the Caps coach.
Sure goalies weren’t as athletic back in the day, but Bossy had to run the gauntlet of “tough guys” that Ovi doesn’t have to face on a nightly basis.
Again different generations, both are great. I would choose Bossy of the two.

Flyers, Rangers, and most of the other top teams (including the Islanders) were physical and shifty IIRC, and wore teams down. And let's not forget, the two line pass was still in existence so you couldn't get behind defenses all that easily. I don't think Boarding was a penalty yet either. The only real speed they had was Bob Bourne. But in any case, b40 trying to use goaltending as an alibi is pretty lame.
@@johnbuckley8724 Ovi's defensive game has matured alot over the years. He's never gonna be an elite defensive player but he's much more responsible now then he was in his early days. Remember, on the goal that beat the Pens in that cup run it was Ovi that made made play to strip the puck from Crosby and passed it to Kuzy. In his younger days he doesn't make that play. He probably just tries to smear Crosby all over the ice. So he's a much better defensive player now. And yes, Trotz definitely helped Ovi in that regard but he's still doing those things today so it's not like he only did those things under Trotz.

Great video Shannon. His rookie year when Bossy is drafted he meets with Bill Torrey the GM of the Islanders and they talk about his contract. He tells Torrey what do you think a 50 goal scorer is worth? Torrey why You think you are going to score 50? He said watch me and he did. Arguably the greatest pure goal scorer of all time and I was a huge Guy Lafleur fan then.
I agree that Bossy and Ovie are the two greatest goal scorers of all time. As I sit here writing this wearing a vintage Selanne sweater.

Of the 46 members of the NHL 500+ goals club, only three of them played under 1000 games - Maurice Richard (978), Mario Lemieux (915), Mike Bossy (752).
Mike Bossy was a "class act', both on the ice and off. "22 Says It All!"
this was great to watch. My dad talks about how great those islanders were especially Bossy. Bossy also was 3rd fastest all time to 1000 points idk if you mentioned it Shannon but just to throw it in there. the thought though that during the regular season that he didnt score a goal 1 in 4 games is crazy. and the only person in front of him in goals per playoff game is Lemieux. averaged 57.3 goals per season as well. now comes the speculation part, if he did play longer how many more 50 goal seasons did he have left in him? and does he hit not the 800 but the 900 mark? 327 goals, but all that is now is what ifs and fantasies.
I have a more "optimistic" view on his goal numbers. He would be like we are seeing Ovechkin today, not slowing down in his amount of goals despite getting older.
My take: he would be the first to reach 1000

I was lucky enough to watch him play in Nassau throughout his career, I even got one of his hockey sticks from a practice, but I was young and broke it playing hockey.great video.
I wasn’t alive during Bossys time in the NHL. I learned what I know from this channel. I’ll say he could’ve easily played another 5-7 years in the NHL and been up in the top 5 all time goal scorers at the end of his career.

So where does he rank all time among forwards? Goal scoring is the most important aspect of a forward and he was one of the best at that.

63. His hands were so quick and Nimble, to this day I can't tell how the puck went in watching many replays. No super slow replay back then.

Shannon - What had actually happened at the end was that Bossy told Torrey he wanted to retire after 86-87 because of back. Torrey told him to think about it for a while and see if he could get better. I think Bossy might have went to different medical people hoping for a solution but none happened.

He would be the best player in the nhl with todays style. He played in the rough tough era. Im not sure he wouldnt have had a longer career. That back injury took one of the best at the end of his prime; who is to say if he would have lasted any longer. Seemed like he fought through it and still put up 80+ game seasons.

I hated that team, they were a detriment to the league and the game of hockey in the early to mid 70s.
Yeah they were controversial, but they deserve one. And how do you stop a bully? You beat him up, which the Habs did in the '76 final.
in the 1986-87 season Mr. Bossy only scored 38 goals BUT only played in 63 games due to his chronic back pain. Assuming he could have played at least a whole season (80 games)-he would have needed only 12 more goals in 17 games to do it--and I'm sure he would have

Aside from Wayne, Maurice, and Mario,... Bossy was the best sniper ever. Sabres fan here. Punch could've drafted him. But the Sabres (with the French Connection- including Rick Martin; who was a very productive sniper himself) needed a two way defensive forward. It was fate for the Islanders. In retrospect: What a goal scorer Mike Bossy was! What a hockey player. Wow! Hats Off!

I remember the 50 in 50 and new it was going to inspire the great one to beat it. It is a shame that he couldn't play another few years, to see Howe's goal record be beat at least.
Bossy burned the candle bright on both ends leaving few miles of tread left.
Just my humble opinion, but the really interesting video to me is going to be the one about BILLY SMITH! He was a great goalie and I HATED HIM!

You missed the fact that the islanders teams from 74-75 through to 78-79 lost 3 times to the eventual Stanley cup winners all in the semi finals … this team was great for over a decade…..
I'm 56 & a lifelong Caps fan. I watched Bossy through his career & he WAS Ovechkin version 1.0 goal-wise. Not as tough as Ovi (one dimensional), but had a more accurate shot (keep in mind goalies had smaller equipment back then - hence more room to score).

You almost have to feel sorry for 80s goalies... I mean absolutely no mercy!
A lot of them had short lived careers. These goalies made the NHL, meaning they were not slackers but some of those teams had a way of destroying one's confidence to the point of early retirement. Teams would get a few years (or less) out of a goalie and they would just disappear to be replaced by another goalie, then another one. There were the ones that hung in there like Fuhr, Liut, Smith, Lemelin that lasted pretty well the whole decade. Teams like Quebec, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Pittsburgh couldn't hold onto a steady goalie at all.

What an amazing career!!!! Reminds me of Bure just the unparalleled gifted scorer. Question, do you think if Bure's knees held up the first years i Florida and New York he would have scored 60+ starting both years so incredibly 🔥? If so, that would have made 4 60+ for Bure......then would he have scored another year of 60+ to tie Bossy or perhaps a couple years to hold the record at 6 60+ goal seasons? Thanks Hockey Guy 🙏
Bossy with a modern stick is terrifying.
Personally I think that Ove would probably get the same abuse as Lemieux and Bossy. I don't know if he would have lasted this long if he played in the 80's.
Not saying the guy isn't a great sniper and a great player. He is one of the best of this generation for sure but when you look at physical big forwards in that era they got crushed and got major back problems if not concussed.... I could just imagine a guy like Stevens licking his lips to get at Ove...
