Had the rotten luck of playing in the Smythe and seemingly losing in the first round to the Oilers, but what a player. Played the right way. Easily the most underrated player ever, and a class act.

I remember him best in Canada Cup '87.
I got to love Dale from his time with the Sabres even though the goal scoring declined. He worked his butt off every night and still put up points. If not for that Gretzky guy that I also love, he would have gotten a HART. RIP my friend. 🙏

A true legend of the game, and a great person
The most underrated player of all time. Overlooked all the time because he didn't play in major markets, not much media hype. But if you base it on stats alone, he was one of the best ever. His stats puts him in the league of a Joe Sakic and Steve Yzerman, Guy Lafleur territory, but he basically put up those stats you see on the board all by himself. Think of the talent that surrounded Lafleur, Sakic, and Yzerman, now name me the talent that Dale had?, go on I'm listening. In this respect, he is above Sakic, Lafleur and Yzerman. Only played 15 seasons in the league unlike those other players, but got comparable numbers. Like I said, the most underrated player ever.

All those guys except Verbeek had 2 50 goal seasons. Tkachuk led the league in goals. Roenick had 3 100 point seasons. I'd put them all in though. Pat Verbeek played a very physical game and played a lot of years.
Turgeon also has the most points of any player not in the hall of fame...

Watched him and Gilmour win the memorial Cup in 1981 in Windsor, that Cornwall team was one of the best ever and then he went on to be a great player for everyone he suited up for!!

What a player. We forget what a stud this guy was. Durable. Anybody that can put up more than a point/game in the NHL, especially for some of these weaker teams, is deserving of a ton of respect. Those fantastic assist/ setup numbers are proof of an intelligent playmaker. Exactly what you'd expect from an elite talent. I remember his skating ability, which was tops--always there. Like you note, the Hart is a TEAM award too. Your team must make the playoffs for you to be considered. As if being voted the second best player in the NHL is a sleight.

Nice Homage, couple points he did not get in HOF on his first Ballot which was a joke and the story of his career, number 2 he was the player of the game in that series winning CC game you mention , and when he retired he was 14th all time in scoring, he has been passed since then, also although he had a long career he was only 34 at the time of retirement due to hip injuries.and his jersey was hung in the WPG arena a couple of years ago and a statue is in the works , and finally he was instrumental in the Jets drafting Mark Scheifele as he was his coach in Barrie and recommended him to Chevy great to see Ducky remembered
one extra bit about the Blues stint, he was benched by Keenan when his terminally ill grandmother was in attendance for the final time, then traded

It's a shame that Dale didn't get all of the love and respect from the NHL community while he was alive that he's been getting since he passed away. He was, without a doubt, the most underrated and unappreciated superstar of the last 40 years.
One correction; Dale did NOT get elected to the HOF in his first year of eligibility. Denis Savard and Joe Mullen (!), who were also in their first year of eligibility in 2000, both made it even though Hawerchuk had more points and was productive longer than Savard and he had far more points than Mullen who got in so quickly because he was a great American player. What a disgrace. We Winnipeggers made quite a stink about that slight and sent a petition to make sure he got in the next year, which he did.
The second big slap in the face, which you didn't mention, was his being left off of the 2017 100 greatest players of all time. I watched the announcement program and even though I half expected it, I was still in disbelief that they would leave one of the top 20 scorers of all time off the roster. There are at least a half dozen forwards on the list that are less deserving. Another disgrace.
Finally, Dale didn't just win the draw that set up Mario's winning goal against the Russians in 1987, he was also named the most valuable player of the game. Not many people remember that because it's rarely mentioned. I remember being thrilled when they announced it after the game.

I recall someone suggesting the initial snub by the HHOF may have been symptomatic of the NHL not wanting to attract attention to the defunct franchise that went on to do nothing but lose multi-millions annually in the Arizona desert.

Gretzky scored a lot of goals like that, by shooting the puck in the back of the goalie while he was in "the office" behind the net.

Hawerchuk was regarded as a mini-Gretzky by some hockey writers and fans. He may very well have been the best center in the NHL who played for a team other than Edmonton.
I always enjoyed watching him play and his arrival in Winnipeg enabled the team to shed its previous two years all but instantly, and catapult the Jets to respectability.
Unfortunately; the team's move into the Smythe Division was a death sentence and any meeting with the Oilers spelled an instant playoff exit.
As was the case with Marcel Dionne; Hawerchuk was the star player of a team paralyzed in mediocrity.
He was the face of the Jets and, now taken well before his time, he will be greatly missed.

Lets not overlook Duckys endurance. First 7 seasons missed one game. Had the iron man streak for a while. 7 games missed through the Jets era. I think he missed 6 in four years in Buffalo. 13 games in 13 years. Then the lockout happened and his hip became an issue,and ultimately ended his career.

The Jets did beat Calgary in the 85 and 87 playoffs. It was Edmonton that was the big stumbling block.

He was a superduperstar in the last half of the 80s and first half of the 90s. Had he not played in god awful markets he would have been looked upon as a winner, not a loser. Going to the Sabres was supposed to bring him over the top, but the trade was two years too late in my very enlightened opinion. Had he been an oiler instead of say Glen jerk Anderson or Simpson or Messier he would be a multi cup winner and NHL legend all fans would know of. He was on the wrong teams at the wrong Time…but, he had fun in Winnipeg on a nonsense team with nothing to lose.

If the Jets were in the Norris division, they would eventually run into the Oilers or Flames. I believe if they took out the Oilers in 1990, instead of letting the Oilers come back from a 3-1 deficit, they would have reached the finals and won the Cup.

No, Keenan brought in a few ex-Oilers when the Rangers won the cup. Then when he was with the Blues he tried getting the ones from the Rangers.

The concept of the Hart trophy is pretty bizarre. By the book definition, a journeyman player on a team of beer leaguers who gets 50 points and the team finishes dead last with 20 points absolutely should win the Hart trophy, garnering every single first place vote. It doesn't make a lot of sense that being on a bad team validates you for an MVP award. In reality, it's very nebulous as to what factors are considered.
Had the Jets not got robbed of all their players coming out of the WHA they might have won a cup or two.
