  • "Oh Captain My Captain!" by Walt Whitman
    O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
    The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won,
    The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
    While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
    But O heart! heart! heart!
    O the bleeding drops of red,
    Where on the deck my Captain lies,
    Fallen cold and dead.
    O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
    Rise up--for you the flag is flung--for you the bugle trills,
    For you bouquets and ribboned wreaths--for you the shores a-crowding,
    For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
    Here Captain! dear father!
    This arm beneath your head!
    It is some dream that on the deck
    You've fallen cold and dead.
    My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
    My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will.
    The ship is anchored safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,
    From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
    Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
    But I, with mournful tread,
    Walk the deck my Captain lies,
    Fallen cold and dead.

    This is a wonderful performance. It really brought the emotions of this poem. I played this in class today, on the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's death. My classes of 8th graders were silent and respectful, and I could tell they really felt the sadness and mourning in the poem. Thank you for making it available to us.

      hligh I completely forgot I had this old channel still live on UA-cam. I've since moved most of my work to poetryspoken.com. I just stumbled on the channel after someone asked me about "The Tyger" by Blake. THANK YOU so much for sharing your story with me. That was EXACTLY the reason I started this project a few years ago : to help disseminate this great works. Please check out poetryspoken.com. If there is anything you, as a teacher, would like to hear, do let me know. My Best to you and your class. - - - Seth

    Génial ! At last, I can understand and follow this poem thanks to your beautiful voice, your perfect pronunciation, the sub-titles and the absence of music !!! Thanks a lot ! I also love the way you say the poem and your profile "en ombre chinoise" that allows to see the mouvements of your mouth ! MERCI !

    I suggest you do a reading of "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. I would love to hear it in your calm, relaxing tone. Also, incredible performance! You truly know how to express your emotions in words. Beautiful.

    Absolutely wonderful! I am a composer and when I go to set text to music I write, I always try to find someone reciting them poem in a way that I like. I just decided to take on this poem, which I will be writing for a men's chorus. I am picky so congrats!
    May I make a request.... a few months a go I was granted the rights to set Dylan Thomas' "Do not go gentle into that good night"... Would you please recite that and post it?... recite it with great intensity and passion! Aside from Rodney Dangerfield's version in the '80s movie Back To School, I can't find it anywhere that shows half of that intensity.... I would appreciate it. :)
