Very rare stuff, this. There's very little footage of the 'Belo Horizonte' group in existence, but it was, without doubt, one of McLaughlin's finest line-ups.
i had this concert (UK ITV late night broadcast) on video at one time when i was about 11! I only knew him at the time for the Paco de Lucia trio. I taped over it with an AC-DC concert. I could have committed hari kari when i realised what a great musician he is. And what an insult snubbing him with AC-DC - what a foolish child!!!! I have never forgiven myself for this ...
When I look back, I can't help this feeling that John's acoustic solo in that period (such as Shakti) even has more fire, as compared to his recent works, albeit still excellent. Anyway, his playing has been evolving over the years, a Supreme Master, nonetheless. Thanks for posting.
wow, I just found this amazing video..I bought the record ages ago, always in love with it, but to see the interaction and intuition between these two is truly unbelievable!!!! I have seen JM play many times, but NEVER with this much emotion..such passion and chemistry between him and beautiful Katia...this is what a great love affair can do..!!
Your unigue trio! John my favorite guitarist, as he is charming, handcome - dream, all play beautifully but his manner of performance, improvisation divine. I adore you !
John Improvises his solo- Katie plays exactly the same thing every time- John wrote out all her parts. The unison line he wrote in a cab on the way to the studio when they went to record this piece.
Pat Oliver was a school chum of mine at the University of Colorado at Denver. Among our fellow students was Bill Frissell, someone whom I played with from time to time, a graduate of East High School where I still live down the street. Pat and Bill both moved, Pat taking up in NYC where he became friends with Mitchel Forman, who eventually teamed up with John years later.
So glad there's a live version of this! It is just miles ahead in terms of musical depth. The speed and precision on Labeque's solo is truly amazing - I'd love to transcribe that! Did not know that she wasn't really an improviser. It's pretty at hard at this speed. Such a great period in McLaughlin's career. To the guitar players out there - so McLaughlin is a DSX player? looks like it..
....John and Katia...a match almost made in Heaven.John is possibly at the top of his technique here...essentially just playing a standard classical guitar with pick.Bright Moments 🐝🌈
HE plays fast because that's what the hell he DOES! Why do people want to go to where a guy plays a certain way and complain ALL the time? We don't complain about slow players, we just change the channel.
they're both great, no problem. JM never stay's still though, always the seeker. I can't think of another musician who's been through the changes he has. Much better than playing the same old - once fresh now stale riffs - for the last 30 years, no names mentioned. carlos s... oop's.
Absolutely correct ,he’s Ben playing the same for over 40+ years made a great living out of it though,I thought is was only me who thought this bravo .
Yeh, I love this period of JM's career. My MO files are all on 'VOB' and they're HUGE!, like approaching 1gig. I assume it's a 'lossless' format. Is there anyway I can convert them to something smaller? tks.
And the fellow who moved into his ex-Grenich Village apt. when when he split NYC for France, and left his Gold Record for BIrds of Fire hanging on the wall- cause he didn't care for the music bus. in the grand USA
SRV has a style and JM has his "styles" but guitar ability? take "belo horizonte" and "A handful of Beauty", I think nobody has those fingers. JM is number one in guitar tecnique, thats very clear"
wow you get annoyed listening to John Mclaughlin? that's fine his music isn't for everyone, but just watch john's performance of dawn at syracuse university, and tell me he isn't an incredible guitar player and "doesn't have the feeling on the guitar". Then show me Steve's best video here and compare guitar skills, not the music or the style, just the guitar ability.
It's not like he doesn't do that. If I listen to SRV I get annoyed because doesn't have the abilities on the guitar. I love John Mclaughlin's music because it's John Mcalughlin's music not because it's like SRV.
The thing was, Katia was a classical musician, unlike Pat and Mitch, and she couldn't improvise at the level John and all the other French musicians could, and so John ended up writing out all her parts, to the relief of all. If you listen to her solo and compare it with the record- same thing.
John is number one for spirituality, passion, grace and ferocity. Nobody goes out on a limb like this man.
..also, I love Katia, what a beauty..!!!
Very rare stuff, this. There's very little footage of the 'Belo Horizonte' group in existence, but it was, without doubt, one of McLaughlin's finest line-ups.
As far as I heard John and Katja where falling in love at that time, and this is a part of tis great playing together
She's beautiful!!
This might be the best thing on the internet
41 years later Katia is still beautiful
Johnny boy ain't bad either for an 81 year old man.
@@shirleymental4189sure and I corrected it, it is even 41 years ago. Hell it really flies

you're going on a highway to hell for that 😋
Nice way to play the synclavier Kathia, John with a singular spanish guitar, what great is this my God!

mc laughlin not only plays good, he also kicks ass :P
I know this well from the record but this is incredible and at times superhuman. 😀
AWESOME MUSIC, PLAYERS!!!! TOMMY CAMPBELL ON DRUMS!!!
Katia on Keys is GORGEOUS!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY John McLaughlin!

Stunning Sound and Concert...Just one word...¡¡¡ YEAH...

Staggering virtuosity. JM!

i have a 1 hour video of Mahavishnu he is one of my favorite guitar players, along with Scofield, Metheny, Jim Hall, etc...
Katia and John were the perfect pair. Anyone who could reach McLaughling in speed could only be her. In some takes Katia looks like a vampire.
Lovely simple, nice yellow shirt. John is simply "himself".
....John and Katia...a match almost made in Heaven.John is possibly at the top of his technique here...essentially just playing a standard classical guitar with pick.Bright Moments 🐝🌈

He met the perfect woman - someone with as many chops as him.
She's great. Yeah, Syncla is a bit dated now but at the time was
state of the art.
I think it sounds amazingly esoteric and beautiful, otherworldly and still organic in comparison to a lot of digital synthesizers that came out later.

lovely
Katia Labecque, JM's former wife on the Synclavier

@underage4page yeah, nice observation!
My cat is named Katia too. she is a beauty as well but she can play piano fuck all, bugger that.
@superhube who cares? he's soloing the hell out of that guitar and you think about his shirt?
Oh okay.
lighting fast, but very long.
'They may be lovers but the idea that you would know this from the video is preposterous'.
Chill out dude, just a light hearted comment.

AbstractMan23 i think 1985
1982 Antibes, France
wowww, they both are too speedy
who is the pianist?
The virtuose Katia Labeque
Yeah sure- Except I know the guy who rode in the cab with him.
TOMMY CAMPBELL ON DRUMS, & KATIA IS SO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!! lol

Hey Neil, I am a little late to the party here, but was going to write what you did, so funny, one of us had to do it1 Hope all is well...
How ridiculous
