A tendinitis because of a Friday of massive playing without the right warm up... So I cannot play for all of you. But I take the opportunity to go through flying with guitars, taking you guitar on a plane with you, checking in your guitars... Three of my subscribers have sent me the same question! Guitar friendly Airlines, what to do and what not to do... Hope you find it useful and more than happy to get your comments as always.
Of course: Don't forget to check the Airline Policy about flying with instruments. Some of them have it, some of them don't...

Good information, thank you! My first plane travel with a guitar was with my Gretsch hollow body on Lufthansa. I was a noob and thought they would let me take the guitar on the plane in its case. Ended up checking in the case and getting help from a Lufthansa lady to wrap my guitar in plastic foil to take on board. Great service. In Frankfurt, a gentleman from baggage handling came out personally to hand my case to me!
Thanks for sharing your experience and watching my videos! Guys at Lufthansa are generally very instrument-friendly... One I was flying from Paris to Frankfurt with them and the flight attendants took my case and put it in the first class lockers. Great service indeed - my guitar travelled better than I did LOL...
Valuable information from a pro, thanks for sharing! Be sure to get rested up!
+Bluelightbandit Thanks so much D! Really appreciated! It is ok... just an annoying tendinitis.
Forgot to say - Of course, you can always buy a ticket for your guitar !
Thanks for the information Cesar!!!!!🎸🎸🎸👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼😊
+Steve Harris Thanks to you Steve, as always!
thoroughly enjoyed the video, Cesar! very informative and straight to the point. this should be very helpful in the future as i plan to do a bit of guitar hunting in the states when budget and work schedule allows it. more power to your channel! :-)
Thanks so much for watching and for the nice comment! Appreciated!
Thanks for the info brother
Great information!!! Thanks, Cesar!
+Michael Stander Thanks Michael! I really value having you around! Take care my friend!
I agree with how you pack your guitar and the specific case to use when flying! My Ovation uses the same hard plastic case and it arrived safe and sound!
Thanks for the feedback and for sharing your experience!

Thanks. Very educational.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the advice! Really helpful
More than welcome and happy if it helped! Welcome back anytime!
Great advices Cesar! Thanks!
Thanks to you for the comment and for watching!
I have wondered about this but have not taken a guitar on a flight yet. You give very good information and advice all of which I will keep in mind if I ever decide to do it. I must say I am surprised you recommend British Airways, I have had a lot of trouble with them in the past, e.g. late flights and such but again I've never tried to take a guitar with them so that's a different issue and of course if you say they've been good with you then i take your word for it. Thanks for sharing and I hope you heal quickly.
+fishy paw Many thanks for your comment! Really appreciate always your support for my channel!
During three years i have been flying British Airways every week - not only London - Madrid but all around Europe...It is true I have had many delays (Heathrow can be terrible sometimes ) but they have been always super nice to my guitars. In fact, when I was traveling Economy sometimes my guitar was given a place in one of the small wardrobes in Business Class :-)...Just sharing my experience, of course. Stay tuned, please!
I doubt that I will be flying anytime soon but I always enjoy your videos and it is always great to see you! Thanks for sharing your experience. I hope your hand gets well soon my friend!
+guitarstruggles Thanks Bill! I really do appreciate your support, watching and commenting... BTW I dunno if it is because of the tendinitis but Ophra... OMG I am getting older LOL!!

Thanks Cesar for these tips. 👍😁
Thanks so much for the comment and for watching my videos!
Great video! Thanks so much :-)
Thanks to you for watching and commenting! Glad you liked it!
Hope your hand is better soon.and thankyou for this video i fly P.A.L .frequently, and had no trouble/ damages on that airline. United flying in u.s.a. is another story....almost here
Thanks for watching and commenting!
1. Don't fly United
United Break Guitars lol....never broke any of mine but I know what you mean...
2. Dont fly spirit
Interesting. United happily stowed my guitar in the business class or first class section, just as he said, on three different flights. The ticket counter staff suggested I take it to the gate, and in the worst case scenario, they would gate-check it. Not a fan of United, but in those three cases, they pleasantly surprised by their flexibility. The next airline I flew, ANA (strictly by the book, as he said) would not even allow it to be taken to the gate.
I'll keep these tips in mind if I ever fly and want to bring a guitar.
+JamCave Studio On top of answering the questions I just wanted to share my experience of years flying with guitars... I have read so many dumb comments like " just put it on a gig bag and they are obliged to take it":..no way. In fact some of the friends commenting here have had issues with that at the counters... Thanks so much for watching and commenting, is great having you around!
This is helpful. Thank you
Happy it helped! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment!
Cesar All Guitar I’m gonna be traveling to Australia from the US so i wasn’t sure what I was going to do with my guitars.
Interesting video, I enjoyed it.......hopefully, the tendinitis goes away soon :))
+max washington songs Thanks Max! Appreciated the support as always. You see, the older you get... Is the first tendinitis I have after more than 40 years playing :-) Time passes, my friend....
I've been recently travelling with the Turkish Airlines and they indeed do justice to your instruments, they will take good care of your axe; Unless you are willing to fly with something gargantuan like a Contrabass, they allow you to bring them into the plane as hand luggage. Defenitely reccomended!
Thanks so much for sharing your experience with all of us. Appreciated the views and the comments!
Great info as usual Cesar and I have heard about British airways allow you to take your guitar in the overhead locker. I found out when I bought a guitar on my US holiday that had I been with BA I could have brought it back myself. Hope your fingers soon heal as I miss your weekly licks 😉 today was a bad day for me as I lost money on a computer scam, what a mug and I never I'd get taken in. Oh well.
+Simon Bradbury I am so sorry to hear Simon... those bastards should be in jail! My mum got money taken too on a computer scam past year... Maybe you can do something about it.... Thanks Simon, the hand is doing better by the minute.
Excellent advice here. I've flown with guitars in SKB cases (similar quality to Hiscox) with no trouble; Qatar Airways have always taken excellent care of my checked guitars (I mostly fly Hong Kong - Doha - Manchester). With a bolt-on neck guitar, another option (I wouldn't do it regularly, but on occasion it's OK) is to take the neck off, wrap the body and neck and take them in a suitcase.
Of course, when the time comes to take my Les Paul back to the UK, I'm buying a seat for it and babying it every step of the way! Stupid fragile headstock angle :)
Thanks so much for the comment and for sharing your experience with all of us! Hiscox are great cases and I have never had an issue when travelling with them... Welcome back anytime!
Happy that you said Hiscox are the best, as I just bought one in preparation for traveling to Asia!
Thanks for watching and the comment! I can tell you I have seen the Hiscox falling from a luggage cart, bouncing several times and my PRS is like new ( you can see her on my vids... ) Just make sure the shape is the correct one.
I have an arch top so based on recommendations got the jumbo shape. Nonetheless there was still a gap at the endpin area. I emailed the Hiscox people asking for recommendations and they sent me (at no charge) a bunch of matching color padding pieces, which I velcroed into that area. Great company!
thank you sir
Thanks to you for watching and commenting!
Sometimes it works ... I just had two sleepless nights because of "travelling" with guitar ... and now your extremly helpful video showes up!!! Well, I did plenty of times fly with a guitar ... but with cheaper "travel" guitars. So I only used a gigbag and was never asked ones to check it in whatever. Only this time I have to bring my Lowden acoustic who has - hopefully! - a great Hiscox case. Still ... it makes me still a bit worried. Thank you for the useful tips!
Thanks so much for the comment and for sharing the experience. I have a video in the channel about Hiscox Cases...Cheers!
@@CesarAllGuitar Hi Cesar, thank you for replying! ... I will check the video about Hiscox. I wish you a great time ... cheers Res
thank you
+Mikhail Liakhovskiy Thanks for watching and commenting, really appreciated!
oh man, I sure can relate to the hand problems!!! It can change your life! Good info in this video Cesar! Do you not loosen the strings even a bit when flying with your acoustic guitars? I know the barometric pressure changes and instruments like drums and banjos (with tuned heads) will often change tuning or even bust. I hope your hand mends quickly! Cheers brother!
+Randy Schartiger Thanks Master! So thankful for your support Randy. It is annoying but nothing serious thank God. Just getting older :-) Well, I have never loosen the strings during so many years of flying...and I have never had any issue, in both electric and acoustic guitars. Never changed tuneing either.. Maybe it all relates to how good d=the cases are and how well packed the guitars are.... Anyway I suppose it does not harm loosing them ;-) Many thanks Randy, appreciate having you around so much!
I have never had the opportunity to fly, I always wanted wings, haha. However if I ever do fly I will remember these tips. Thanks Cesar ☮
+Harry Timmons LOL I wish I had wings too so I would stop worrying about taking the babies with me when I take planes... LOL. I am so f...ing tired of flying my friend .. I only want to play guitar :-)
Cesar Blues Guitar haha, I know! this damn job thing is screwing up my fishing and music career ☮
Hi Cesar, once you have check in at the gate, so from where would you collect your guitar. Also which Hiscox would you recommend for gibson lespaul standard. Whether it has TSA. As we have to keep the locks open otherwise. Thats is more scary.
Hi Cesare, I have another question about travelling with expensive acoustic guitars. Going soon for a long time to asia ... how to handle/care the climat ... humidity. I did live many years in asia ... but not with a prescious guitar ... or I was also innocent and did never care ... so I never had any issues.
I have never taken a guitar with me when flying but I appreciate the tips for if/when I do. I hope the tendinitis goes away soon. What do you usually do to warm up before playing?
+Dale Palmer Thanks Dale for being around my friend! IT is nothing serious but just annoying . I have a very simple warm up routine, I will share it in one video, thanks for the suggestion!
Thanks for the information. I will be traveling from the U.S. to Italy this summer to play some gigs with a big band. Do you think things like Mono cases that are super protective but not hardcases would work? I was thinking about getting one and it seems that it would be easier than a hardshell case
First thanks for watching and commenting. Sincerely I will not bet my guitar in a Mono bag. If you have seen how the people who work in the luggage bands treat the suitcases, etc.... Of course if you are going to fly first class and you can carry your guitar with you in the cabin, it will be ok....
me encanta tu acento lol
muchas gracias por el video
LOL ! Gracias a ti! Saludos desde Miami!
Thanks for the info, i have a question, is it ok to dissasemble the neck of your electric guitar or bass , just to be extra careful so the neck doesn't break even if the luggage is thrown. like keeping the neck and body safely in seperate luggage ? i don't travel much but i always wondered whether that doing so is good or bad for the guitars.
Thanks for watching and commenting on my video! I have never done that in any of my trips. I know some people in UA-cam talk about that....
Hi Cesar,
This is super helpful! Have you ever flown AirCanada before? I'll be flying them Denver to Vancouver to Shanghai, and I'm hoping they'll let me carry my guitar on. What's been your experience if you've had one with AirCanada?
Hi there! Well, in my only flight with them I flew Business Class so no problem at all.... Cannot tell you more as I only took one Air Canada plane...
Hello Cesar, have you ever flown a domestic flight in the US with southwest airlines. If so do they allow it on the plane, if not do they treat checked in guitars well? Thanks!
Hello - no, I have not had the experience of flying domestic in US, sorry...I cannot help there.. But you might check the policy of the company for flying with instruments - they might have one...Thanks for watching!
Very helpful video. I am travelling from London to Lima (Perú) in British Airways. My ticket is economic class. Can you tell me about your experience with them? Was it good? Where did they put your guitar?
My experience with British is Excellent. I was traveling London - Madrid for three years in many many occasions and they always took good care of my guitars. Usually they were taking them to a small closet in Business class. Thanks for watching, commenting and welcome back anytime!
I didn't release the tension of the strings before flying from Berlin to Bogotá and I had many issues with the neck after arriving, I had to take my guitar to maintenance. (Berlin is at 34 meters above sea level while Bogotá is 2600)
I am sorry about your experience ... In all my years traveling around the world with Guitars ( believe me, around the world ) I have never had any issue.
Hi thanks you for sharing your experiences !
I have two questions :
- Do you know if "Vietnam Airlines" is a "guitar-friendly" company ?
- What do you think about the "travel-guitars" (such à Taylor GS mini) ? Do you think it really increase the chances of taking it on the plane with you (in economy) ?
Thanks for the question and for watching the video! I have flown from Beijing to Hanoi twice in Vietnam Airlines with one of my PRS's and I have not had any problem. It is true that the flight was half empty so there was lots of space...
If you watch my channel you will see I have a Little Martin. I fly with her very very often and always comes with me in the cabin with no problem, even in Economy class.
I hope you enjoy the channel and welcome back anytime!
@@CesarAllGuitar Hi guys. Since I need to get Vietnam Airlines' plane soon and I am really worried about my guitar atm. They said I need to buy an extra seat to get the guitar on-board (even though I've got the business tix), and since I'm traveling on my own, I wouldn't have extra hands. I want to ask; you think would it be still better and give more chance if I upgrade my ticket to business class? I should anyway need to bring my guitar in hard case to the gate right? ugh I am so worried I wonder how all other musicians do it. Thanks a lot.
this is good stuff!
+pitsbrits Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Really appreciated! I hope you will enjoy the content on my channel..please stay tuned! Much more coming!
+Cesar Blues Guitar i can relate coz i had my friend by the SLG200S in SG and Jetstar didn't allow it for handcarry. good think she stuffed her clothes in the gigbag and it was really really tight. I got my guitar in good condition!
+pitsbrits See...Not guitar friendly,,...usually they let me in with the SLG's as they are smaller than a normal guitar.. But good your friend could stuff the clothes in! Great solution!
+Cesar Blues Guitar yup and im so scared till i knew my guitar arrived safe! btw this vid is really a good content, most guitarists will find this useful!
+pitsbrits Thanks so much! Happy you have found it useful!
So, assuming you have a carry-on suitcase containing your tuner, capo, extra strings, and little things you need, do you ship your amps and peddles, do your amps fly with you in their own heavy cases, or do you simply rent what you need when you get to a gig that you flew to?
Good question! Since I have the Kemper, I only use Kemper in my gigs. Never flew again with pedals-just get a Kemper in the place where the gig is.
I never flew / fly with Amps. They get rented at the place where the gig is.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
I might be moving to Germany in a few months and we aren't packing my BASS guitar in the household goods (furniture, dishes, etc.). Bass guitars have a much longer neck than regular guitars and thus may or may not fit on the plane. My original plan was too put it in my hard case, with lots of bubble wrap and random clothes to keep it safe. Then I was going to go nuts with packing tape and check it in at the gate. What do you think of this plan? Will my guitar fit through the x-ray machine in security? My bass was sent to me through the mail and put on my doorstep upright so im not questioning bubble wrap, im questioning fitting and stuff. Thanks for the tips!
Well first let me thank you for watching and commenting! Now it sounds like a plan. You should not worry about fitting- think about the double bass players traveling.. in my case is a special company which takes care of shipping my guitars- on top of my cases they use special crates for that. Bottom line- I don't see a problem with your plan. But you better have a good case! Welcome back anytime!
Thanks so much!
Hi Cesar, I am flying economy on Swiss Airlines, Florida to Zurich..I have 3 electric guitars that I wish to bring (home)
1-strat, 1- SG and one flying V. the strat has the best case..
what do you think is my best solution? carry 2 on in gig bags ( my wife and I can carry one each) or try to gate check in all 3 with good cases? pls. advise, and have you had any good or bad experiences with Swiss air? thanks!
First thanks for commenting and watching. My experience with SwissAir is they go by the book and no exceptions made. Flying with them I always check the guitars at the gate....Let me know how it goes.
hey Cesar I am going to fly in a month and want to ask which case is better for my strat
SKB Route 66 vs SKB FS-6
They are almost the same price.
Hey Adham... I have not tried the Route 66 but my Carvin always travels in a FS6 and I have never had an issue... thanks for watching!
What about flying with the Fender USA Deluxe case or Gibson Custom Shop Case, are they okay, no? I don't want to buy the guitar on my trip and leave its case behind for a better flight case.
I don't think you will have any problem using that case!
Hello Cesar,
I'm flying Air Canada soon from Ohio to Toronto then Toronto Peru. I wanted to know if you had any experience with the airline. I'm traveling with my bass in a soft case, but I intend to wrap it with bubble wrap and fill it with clothing also. I also hope I can get it on the plane, but if I check it at the gate, do you think it will be ok? Thanks in advance!
Hi Franco Paolo! Thanks for watching and commenting! Well - I am sorry I have no experience with that airline but checking at the gate is always, always and option. Be sure you protect the bass properly...
Hey,
I'll be flying from Australia to Brazil next month.
I've an Yamaha LL16 and I'm planning of buying the SKB020 Universal Jumbo case to check-in my guitar, would you recommend this case?
Since it's almost 2 days to arrive in Brazil, do you think my guitar will suffer from the extreme climate condition?
Would you recommend putting and humidifier inside the guitar body?
Hey Lucas,
Thanks so much for watching and commenting on my videos. I don't know the model you mention but as far as it is a very solid case and you make sure the guitar does not move inside the case , I think it will be fine. I won't recommend you put ANYTHING inside your guitar when shipping...
So, the climate change is not a problem?
That's my main concern...
Should I put the humidifier ?
Thanks for the reply!!
The total trip is around 32h...
Personally I have never put a humidifier inside any of my guitars, and the last trip was from China ( Beijing ) to Miami and the total trip, taking in account Customs clearance and all was more than three weeks...And never had an issue ( Spain, Romania, UK, Egypt, China and now Miami ). But is a decision you must take... I can only talk about my experience!
Oh, thank you!
That clarifies a lot!!
Guess I'll just put my guitar on a TSA case and hope for the best.
I'll record all the process though, just for precaution.
This is my most expensive guitar ever (900$) all solid... I'm crazy about everything that could happen to it, haha
Thank you Cesar! :)
traveling for work. gonna be away from home 3 weeks which is way too long for me not to play. Very nervous about taking my guitar with me.
Don't be. If you watch my channel you will see I live " on the planes " and never had an issue! Cheers man!
Cesar, I am going to be flying with a vintage twelve string in a few days, the neck tension is much higher on it than on a six string guitar, should I detune it a step or two?
Hello! Well, I have never flown with a 12 strings guitar...it might be good lowering a bit the tension? Thanks so much for watching my videos!
@@CesarAllGuitar Thank you! I've landed and all is well, only a single scratch on the body appeared but otherwise it is fine.
I hope you get well again, Cesar.
Framat
+2009framat Getting better by the minute, Framat..Thanks so much!
thanks man! bt what about malaysia airlines? are they will take good care of my guitar?
Hello! Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I flew once with my PRS with them and it was perfectly OK...WElcome back anytime!
Can you or anyone tell me your experience with Emirates airlines carrying your guitar - as hand luggage or with check ed in on economic class please?
I am sorry- every time I flew Emirates was first class.... but I think you willl be ok, they are a great airline. Thanks for checking in!
Hi Cesar great vid, but have this changed since we in 2022.
Not that much but I will post an update…thanks!
Would an SKB case for a stratocaster wrapped in bubble rap work?
1I have two SKB and at least in my experience they are great Flight cases. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks!
Hi, may you please tell me if qatar airways is friendly with taking my guitar on the plane as a carry on for economy class
Hello! I never flew Qatar in economy but is a very reputable airline as far as I know...Ask them to find out....Thanks!
I've had tendinitis now for 3 months- how do you get it to heal?
The best way is resting, my friend. Thanks for watching!
What if you only have a vintage case? Any tips for protection? :(
Try to wrap the guitar inside as much as you can and the trick is that the guitar does not move at all inside the case. Hope it helps
Can you suggest an affordable case for a les paul?
Hello! Any of the cases you might find at Guitar Center will make it. My preference are the Hixcox...
Hello, what about KLM? Is it good for guitar players?
My experience with KLM flying to Beijing was good- business class... thanks!,
I'm flying Japan Airlines from NYC to Tokyo. I want to take my Gibson ES-335 in a gig bag and take it on board. Economy class. What do you think? I've done it before but as you say there is always a chance you get some counter worker in a nasty mood.
Hi! First thanks for watching and commenting, really appreciated! Now - sincerely I will not do that... My experience with the Japanese Airlines is that they go by the book always and they do not allow that in economy class... My advice will be to get a good case and check it in at the gate.... Welcome back anytime.!
Hi, Thanks for the advice. Great video!
Hello - Could you tell me your traveling experience with Emirates airlines about carrying your guitar. As I am traveling soon with Emirates airlines from the U.K. to Dubai, your advice will be appreciated.
Hi, do you think stock fender american strat hard cases secure enough to get checked in?
I have always shipped my strats like tat - just make sure you pack it well on the inside, and the guitar cannot move inside the case.
Thanks for watching!
Cesar Blues Guitar thanks! I checked KLM and British airways, and they say that guitars should be checked in. I didn't see they allow a hardcase if I buy a Business class ticket. Can you un-confuse me please?
I have ALWAYS got my guitar with me ( even two ) when I have a Business Class ticket. And I have used the two airlines. You simply get into the plane if you have a business class ticket. They will take care.
Ethihad airlines by any chance? Flying two guitars from Belgium to india with a stop over
I am sorry... never flew that airlne...thanks anyway for checking in!
Do you have any idea if United are guitar friendly ? Thanks :)
You can watch the UA-cam video “ united breaks guitars”... in general i don’t like United. I have not had issues with them but I don’t like the airline, I prefer American Airlines. Thanks!
Cesar Blues Guitar okay thank you :)
I'm flying to Norway, which will be 3 planes...if I have to put my guitar in the hold, how can I assure that it'll be alright? we're stopping in the airport lounge at Oslo for a few hours whilst we wait for our second plane, will they let me take my guitar to check her over? we're flying SAS
Hi there - never flew SAS with guitars.... but I think if you pay them a call they will arrange it for you,,, good luck!
Sam Mason I know its long ago, but did it work Well for you by checking in? Thanks mate
What about american airlines economy class.
Do you know weather they are very strict on rules and stuff
Hi...I am afraid they are really strict....
Can someone tell me how many guitars we are allowed to take n is it safe....i have two guitars and im flying to singapore????plz help
If you are flying economy I am afraid you will need to check in one of them....
Cesar Blues Guitar thank you for replying me....so can i take my two guitars one with hardcase and another normal guitar bag....My flight will be in malindo airlines.
Never flew Malindo Airlines....but if they do operate as a normal airline yes, you check in two and take with you one and there should be no problem. I took four with me in Singapore Airlines ( three checked in and one with me in the cabin ) ...
Cesar Blues Guitar thank you very much sir...
Hello Cesar and everyone who is watching this comment, I would like to ask if anyone ever carry their guitar and fly with United Airlines? I have seen news about UA that they don't treat musicians and their instruments well. However, I really hope that I can carry my guitar with me or else I will see it only once a year...
I am traveling from Los Angeles to Oklahoma City, which will probably be a small plane like E175. Seems hopeless ha..
By the way, this video is great, truely thank you for your advice : D
I only travelled once in United and nothing happened to my guitar...Though if it is a small plane you may be forced to check it in... Thanks for watching!
can i take 2 electric guitars with me on a plane
Ho Jonathan! First thanks for watching and commenting! Now to your question - I have done it when flying First/Business class ( no problem ). There are gig bags for two guitars ( I have one ). I am afraid if you are flying economy you will need to check in and then will need two cases or a case for two guitars ( flight case ).
You can see the two - guitar gig bag here
www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/road-runner-double-electric-guitar-gig-bag
Hope this helps!
Have you ever flyed to Dubai, in emirates?
Yes, several times from Cairo. Never had an issue, excellent airline! Thanks!
i plan to unscrew my strat and put it into my luggage
I couldn't understand the name of the first airlines that is guitar friendly...
British Airways. That have been superb with me always, even flying economy. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your quick response and very excellent information. My only question is What about TSA locks?
Well, if you have TSA locks is OK - they will open it anyway...
I value your expertise and experience! I just wonder if the latches get somehow opened in transit...
Take a bolt on neck guitar, eg strat. Take off the neck and check that in with your luggage, wrapped in clothes. Carry on the body in a folded gig bag.
This will get you on most if not all airlines.
Get a guitar specifically for this, you don't want to regularly fly with your irreplaceable, super expensive guitar anyway.
That's an option for sure. Thanks for watching!
I’ve considered that, but then the guitar will need to be set up again, right? Bridge adjustment, intonation, etc.
Common sense is all that’s required. simple as that.
Less common of all senses...Thanks!
I’ll bet you have never flown with Ryanair 🤮 they don’t even look after their passengers let alone guitars 😔. Baggage handlers don’t give a toss about our luggage, my advice DONT risk it.
