I have been trying to learn asl for about a year now. I am losing my hearing. Financially I can't afford to attend classes. You have been the b UA-cam program so far. Your explanation is better than the actual deaf instructors.
Meredith, I just wanted to thank you so much for your videos. I started teaching my 2-year-old granddaughter how to sign and your videos have made it so much fun for me. I used to get up at 5:00 AM and watch the news while having my coffee and waiting for her mom to drop her off for the day. Now, I'm up at 4:45 AM so excited to watch your videos while waiting for her! I love your approach to it. You make it so easy to understand and retain. Thank you for taking the time to make them for those of us who are learning. Please continue to make more!
There is a deaf person who works at the time thumb near me, he's the cart collector. I want to learn more sign language just to brighten his day, his other colleagues don't seem to care. I already knew a bit of ASL before I knew he was deaf, now I'm devoted to learning it more.
I was going to click on the color video after this one hoping you would cover my favorite color in it… But just a few minutes later I discovered your favorite color is my favorite color! Teal is so beautiful! Thank you for all the lessons and videos you have posted on ASL, I am learning so much! 🙏🏻
This is so helpful for me to be able to communicate with a new hire in my work place. She is also showing me different signs. Being able to watch videos and repeat them is so helpful ☺
I'm new to ASL and just recently stumbled onto your videos. I've done the first 3 of this series and while I'm a visual learner, so this is already helpful just to watch these, your little tips are really helpful ("milk....it's like milking a cow"). I make online flash cards, so that I can study whenever & wherever, and I just went through the "food" flash cards for the first time and remembered 90% of them, just because of your tips. So thank you very much for making these videos :-)
Meredith, this is super helpful for me!! you have no idea! You make it so easy to learn another language! Keep making more videos! The more the merrier! Thank you!
I can't believe a get stuck trying to "say" ASL. Well, I don't give up that easy. Someday, I will be able to spell with my hands. I will use the same trick I used to learn nato phonetics alphabet. Again, nice video. Congratulations to the team, all those guys we never see but I know they are there working hard. This has to become one of the top ten youtube channels.
These videos are so helpful and I LOVE that they’re broken down so I can click on a specific word/sign in the description and it will take me to that point in the video! Just a note, I don’t think I saw the sign for “school” in this video which is why I clicked on the video. But I learned so many other words so thank you!!
Thank you. And yes, we totally overlooked the title of video (insert facepalm). We actually have a full school's signs video coming out tomorrow....with the sign for school in it. Go check it out!
I am teaching my 2nd graders' sign language using your videos! They love it and can't get enough. It is so fun to practice communicating this way and this also helps keep my classroom quiet.
i watch these in 0.75 speed to help me process! this makes it so i can see the signs in slower motion so i can copy it and note it into my brain easier.
i really wanted to thank you for this :)) i have DID and have a non-verbal alter. my system has been learning asl so we can communicate with our friends and your videos are helping us so much!! thank you
That's wonderful! I have a question about DID, does every alter have to learn ASL individually in order for your system to understand the language? Very sorry if I sound uneducated, I don't know much about DID yet. Thank you! Sending love!
I started learning with a free app and then I became more curious and wanted to learn more. Thank you for making these videos for others to learn! Great video production as well! :)
Thank you so much for these videos. I have a degree in ASL but due two two strokes...I forgot a lot of it and had to relearn...this made the process much easier. It appears the knowledge is still there but now I have access to it ...if that makes sense. One thing I'm still missing if figures-of-speech...I remember "train go--sorry" and "egg's broken" but the rest is a blank. Can you make a video on figures-of-speech?
Hi meredith I'm from switzerland and I have a disability that sometimes prevents me from speaking so your videos are very helpfull to comunicate in these situations Love your videos❤
Do you have any tips on how to deal with awkwardness of learning to sign and trying to communicate with deaf people, knowing that you'll probably mess up or look silly if you don't do it all correct or your sentence structure isn't always correct? This is the hardest part for me is having the confidence to put my signs into action with other people. I do them at home and with my kids but out in public I feel embarrassed that I might be messing up or doing it wrong..
I have this same problem with learning Spanish, but my teacher said that as long as you get your point across, it doesn't really matter. They'll correct you if you do something wrong, but at least you're able to communicate. It'd be wonderful to use ASL or Spanish perfectly, but the point of learning it is to be able to communicate.
You're very helpful you helped me how to talk with deaf person i talk with deaf person once and Because of you i told her the sogn language and she seems to know want i'm saying ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you Meredith for your great videos! I’m learning a lot really fast. I need to ask about something; I’m not clear on when to point back at myself (or to whom I am signing) as a “finished speaking“ sign. Can you clarify please? Thanks again.
Meredith...I have stumbled acrosd your videos by chance as I was looking for learning ASL. You are doing a wonderful job for beginners like me. Indebted to you my mentor!
I can't believe how fast I've been learning! But I have a couple questions. How do you sign "that" and I can't make the Y hand without my ring finger sticking out. does that make a difference?
These videos are so helpful, thank you. Also sorry if this is off topic, but would it be correct if I signed "see you later" and then signed alligator afetr it? I was just wondering because I thought it would be cool if I could sign "see you later alligator"
Fun fact: Similar to how English has jokes that rely on how words sound, ASL has jokes that rely on how signs look. In my ASL class, we learned to sign a joke from king kong's perspective. Joke: The signer indicates "me - king kong" and then "building - climb". King kong sees pretty girl, takes her out of window, and holds her in left hand while swatting away airplanes. After proudly clearing the skies, he says he wants to marry the girl. Unfortunately, the sign for "marry" makes it look like he squashed her in his left hand. He then cries. It's not super funny written out (just as verbal jokes likely won't be as funny signed) but it'd be similar to a comedy act by a mime since ASL is very much expressive.
I love the videos I have watched so far. I went to your website, but was not able to register. I tried on 3 different browsers. Not sure if membership is capped. Some blocks for information won't tell me what information is needed.
Hi! I'm really enjoying the clear way you show the signs, many are for me reminders, but I'm also learning some new things, which is awesome. I do have a question though as I have noticed it here and on a couple of your other videos. I was always taught when fingerspelling to keep the hand and arm still not having extra movement (minus things like double letters sliding or the Z and J which require movement), but I noticed that every time you spell "ASL" you start by creating a circular motion with the fingerspelling hand. All your other fingerspelled words follow what I was told except for the "ASL". I am wondering why that is? Is this part of a lexicon style of signing ASL? Thanks again!
ASL can be signed without the circle motion, but that circle motion is used when you fingerspell an abbreviation. Hope that helps! And thanks for watching!

Like many other, I have learned so much from your videos. I have a question regarding making conversation. Is it proper to sign how you would speak i.e. sign sequence: you, give, red, book, me, please verse your sequence: book, red, give me, please. Thank you for these learning videos
I have a question. When you sign sentence structrue, for example, " Can you give me the book please?", do you sign "Book give me, please?" or " Give me book, please?"
Can you explain the order of words in the sentence "Can you give me the red book please?" In pt 2 of this series you signed "Can you give me the book please?" and signed "give me" before the sign "book". However, in this video, you signed "book" before the sign "give me". I'm confused! I love your videos. I'm surprised with how quickly I'm learning. Thank you!
Hey Meredith! I’m learning so much with your videos. BUT the thing that slows me down is ASL structure and grammar! I *kinda* get the idea but I definitely get confused. I did watch the video on it, but I still get tripped up on certain sentences. Is there any other way you could suggest to understand it more? Thanks! ❤️
I happened to come across your video while browsing. The sign you demonstrate for BOOK is not accurate. You're inadvertently signing OPEN-BOOK as a verb. The correct sign for BOOK involves repeating the sign twice to indicate a noun. You should be familiar with the noun/verb pair. I hope you make the correction in this video. Thank you. :-)
My uncle who is an interpreter said to start with the main subject like as if you walked in on a conversation and wanted to know what the people were talking about. Like "yeah I have a green tractor in Wisconsin". "Whatcha talking about? " "tractors"
