Just some fyi, the older nikon lenses with autofocus use a screw drive, where the focus motor is actually inside the camera body. If you look at a body that supports it, you will see what looks like a tiny screw driver in the mount, and on the lens what looks like a little screw (or vice versa I forget) I believe the D750 has it as did ny 800 series. The newer nikon lenses have focus motors in the lens themselfs and dont use the screw drive. So any lens you wish to use on the Z with adapter would be any lens with built in focus motor.
When you have time definitely enable the focus peaking feature in your camera’s menu. I find it to be an improvement over the green dot manual focus indicator.
A lot of my Sony friends use their version of focus peaking and find it really useful! I'll definitely do a test run with it and see how I like it - thanks for the heads up, Solomon!! :)
In the past, the focus motor was built into the camera body. In newer lens bodys (AF-S, AF-P, Z-Mount...), the focus motor is integrated in the lens. Take a look at the lens mount. If there's a slotted screw, it's an old lens. So there must be a motor in the camera body. The Z-system bodys and the FTZ adapter don't have an integrated focus motor so you have only the option "manual focus" ;-)
I hate that! Great to know, but such a bummer because I love all my old lenses. Sounds like I'll forever be keeping my D750 then, because I love my easy AF as well!
just bought a barely used z6 - put the 3.50 firmware on it - works great for wildlife (Sigma 150-600) - but for video I use an AF-P 18-55 DX lens with the FTZ - that lens has no VR (the image stab of the z6 is enough for that small lens) - the AFP-lenses are very silent and very quick at focussing comparable with the Z-lenses (especially this one as it has no onboard VR) - I also have the fullframe AFP 70-300 lens (also with the silent AF-motor - that one is with VR) - also great for video - my other cameras are a D5300 and a D750 - the tiny AFP 18-55 can be bought for little money
If you end up needing to manual focus you can zoom in with the magnifying glass button plus the focus peaking and use those both together and get tack sharp images
I'll play around with that and test that out! I found the manual focus super easy on this camera, so I'm sure that will help me so much more even. Thanks for the suggestion, Anthony!
I am about to get my Nikon Z6 ii, d750 finally died on me and making the move to the mirrorless now. Glad to see some versitile videos out here, not all the stuffy over techincal gear flex videos. Sucks about the manual focus. I guess the FTZ only works with Nikon lenses that have the AF motors in them. I am seriously cracking up about the taking a knife in the desert incase of humans or bobcats... here I am like.. desert = snakes yikes! lol and I totally just had to check my friend Erica's friends list because your vibe screams someone she'd be friends with down in L.A. Sure enough, yes you two know each other hahaha.
THAT'S SO FUNNY! LA is such a small world for a big city, it seems like everyone knows each other here. I love that so, so much. Did you get your Z6ii yet? I hope you love it - and yep, AF only works with the lenses that have the motors in the lenses...which makes total sense, but I just didn't realize that until I tried it for myself.
🙏🙋♂️Hello Boston..I love your vdo❤👍, very lively & attractive content..about the lens on this vdo, I also used it too but the AF-D version and surely I buy coz it's cheap(40$).😆 Its not the worst nikkor lens at all..I guaranteed.📸💯👍
I LOVE cheap lenses that are actually useful! I hate how photography can be so expensive, so that's why I test these cheap lenses. I'm glad you've found use in a similar lens! Thanks for watching & supporting my channel!! 🙌✨
Great - thank you for making this video! Manual focus has it's time and place but I don't really enjoy going out of my way to do it on a modern camera.
Ah! How interesting! I really felt scared switching out lenses in the desert, so I get the worry about needing an additional layer of protection on the sensor. Are all your DSLR lenses usable with AF on the adaptor? I was quite surprised how many of my lenses weren't.
It will only autofocus native Z lenses or AF-S, AF-P or AF-I F lenses with the FTZ adapter. There is a 3rd party adapter from megadap that will slowly autofocus the older lenses. I think there may be another 3rd party adapter that will do the same.
I wonder if there would be issues with the camera and lenses 'talking' to each other through two adapters... Especially if it's a slow focus, I wouldn't want that and wonder if I could probably do it quicker manually. It's great to know that it's an option though; thanks for watching & commenting Mitchell!!
@@BostonSchulz It seems to work but you might be able to focus quicker manually. I think for vlogging it may be useful although it does make a fair bit of noise . Hopefully it will get better as time goes on.
Thanks Steven! I did have a great time! I loved that little cactus plant too. I think the picture of getting on it's level turned out great! Thanks for watching & commenting!!
I was just looking at a 6ZII, I need one! :)) I also have the same lens that I use on my Nikon film cameras. But yes... The D lenses don't have a focus motor in the lens so the camera has to do the focus. You can actually see the part in the lens that connects to the camera body to do the focusing. And the FTZ adapter does not have the same thing, which is .... not so nice :)) But at least it works with the other ones.
Sorry I missed this comment! Did you get a Z6ii yet?? I'm still super obsessed with mine, still bummed about not being able to AF on old lenses, but I am learning how to better use MF with it, so I guess it's not that big of a deal. 🤷♀️ ❤️
@@BostonSchulz It's fine! Haha! Yes! I got the Z6II finally!! I use it almost every day and it's great! Yeah ... Too bad it doesn't work with older lenses, because I have a few. They work on my order film Nikon cameras but not on the Z6II soooo... HAHA! :)) But love the image, love the body, its a great camera. The video could be better without a $600 recorder, but yeah :))
I'd hate to invest in *another* adapter. But I might try it if I move completely over to the Z cameras and want to keep my old lenses! Thanks for commenting, Eshan!
I've honestly never heard of a focus adapter! I wonder if there would be any issues with the camera 'talking' to the lens with use of two adapters and trying to focus...
You should always research before attaching a lens to a different-style camera. The lens could retract into the body and damage your sensor or so I have heard,
That's only concern if you're using the wrong mount on your camera (if I tried to attach this lens straight onto the new camera). Using an old lens that has AF capabilities with a newer camera can also drain your battery more. But there's no risk of an old Nikon lens 'damaging' a new Nikon body unless there's user error involved. 😏
@@BostonSchulz Btw, I didn't intend my comment to be in any way negative towards you. I rewatched your video and noticed I missed the part where you used the adapter ring. Great video. You have great energy.

I don't have any z lenses so I leave the adapter on all the time. I feel it gives a little more protection to keep the sensor clean from dust etc.
