Digital Super 8 Camera Example Tips On Shooting!
Nice down to earth explanations Boston! I'm about to shoot my first concert, my sons band so I'm not getting paid so there's no pressure. So my question to you involves your white balance kelvin numbers. I've never really played around with it, so your 5260k setting, is that your starting point? This will be in a club setting FYI and that number seems a bit high, but I have to assume that's due to the effect of the spotlight. I'm going to see if I can find footage of bands performing in this club to see what their typical light set up is, I'm sure it's not too sophisticated, but it's a way of doing my homework!
I have had opportunities to shoot shows and festivals, but this isn't my day job. I just got a Z8 as my first mirrorless, and stumbled upon this video. Thank you for being thorough and understandable. This was a great watch, and your humility is as outstanding as your knowledge! 👍📷
why
Why not? 😏
Wish you’d shown sample images from each lens!
It takes just seconds (in any app or program) to make quick adjustments to a photo to give you the same filter effects that the paper shoot offers. But you can’t add exposure after a photo is taken (add light if you don’t have a flash). If you want to take a photo without enough natural light you either need a camera with a flash, you have to use your phone’s flashlight feature, or skip the photo completely. My vote is for the Camp-snap, for those reasons alone.
I can't use my camera with a concert lights on any other shitter but 1/60 because of the lights flickering 😭 and even then it sneaks through sometimes. Even going by 60, 120 and so on in theory has to help, but on practice it's so much worse than 1/60. I can't find enough information about it. I'm in a more provincial place and that's the lights small venues have
Thanks for this ,very useful
I'm so happy to hear that! 📸✨
I got one. Its has a nice look but I dont like the light weight of it. Also it cant use high capacity sds. Overall a nice camera though
I completely understand - I think weight of a item makes it feel more luxurious and hardy. I actually enjoy that it takes cheap SD cards...I don't wanna pay $50+ for a new SD but I had a few cards on hand that worked, so that wasn't an issue for me. I'm glad you overall seemed to like it though!! 📸✨
Thanks for the info in the most simplest way for someone like myself who is just starting out freelancing at gigs. I have only done 2 gigs so far and i was tbinking my photos looked bright and sharp on the camera led but when i got home and checked them out on my laptop, they were dark, they had dark shadow stripes gowing through the image. Could this have been helped if i had put the lens hood on? I am using a camera new to me and learning as i go along. It's a Sony a7iii with a tamron 28-75mm lens. Any advice would be appreciated if anyone has used tbis camera on settings for harsh lighting, etc. Also, i was advised by someone to turn on shutter noise as i turned it off as i didn't want fans etc hearing me press multiple times, click click click. So i have it off, so I can't use a mechanical shutter. Because im building my confidence also being in the pit around other photographers, i dont want to be the noisy one.
Wow thanks
Of course! I'm happy to help! 📸✨
Nice!!, what about your N80..?. thanks for sharing.
Of course - happy to share - I still love this scanner! I shoot maybe 1 film roll per year and it works so well for me. 📸✨
85mm are great & affordable! If you're shooting a tiny venue where you're 2 feet from the performer a wide and fast lens, 35mm or wider is ideal. But ultimately, the best lens for concerts is a 135mm f/1.8. It has the length and the speed. Yes they can be heavy and expensive but SO worth it! It's what I mostly use now and am upset with myself it took me so long to finally get one.
I like to lock my control dials/wheels after I my shutter speed and aperture are set, and then simply ride my ISO up or down to get exposure right. I will not the shutter or aperture till the next shoot. I constantly bump the selection dials while moving around the pit and use to get my settings all out of whack. So locking them going through the (pencil menu) Custom Settings Menu "F4" on the Z9 and "F3" on the D850 to lock them or disable the front and back selection wheels on the bodies. I do it for every show now and haven't had the issue with my setting getting messed up since.
Nikon shooter too, I'm going to try out the WB setting. I'm normally shoot in auto and haven't had much of an issue. But if it helps I'll do it!!!
I feel like in most scenarios you can use auto WB with no issues -- I've found it very helpful for me to be more consistent to my editing style while also being true to the changing color of the lights in the venue. It's not for everyone - but I hope you have fun testing it out!! 📸✨
I hope you've upgraded your film scanner by now. Those Kodak scanners are crap.
Hi there, i hope you well! Thanks for the video! Which nikon z are you using? Suggestion to the world! Do not use the auto area af people for concerts😂🫣
I use the Nikon Z6ii right now! 📸 Auto Focus and letting your camera choose your settings for you -- it will hurt you more often than it helps!! (At least in my opinion... 😂)
@BostonSchulz I'm using the same. Big jump from the D70S to Z6ii. Yes did hurt me already and learned my lesson
Ah you're a legend! Thanks for taking the time to make this
I'm so happy to help!!
The latest version of the Camp Snap has an improved sensor, strap eyelets, lcd panel, ability to change the shutter sound volume as well as turn it off, and the ability to set metadata. Looking at the metadata from my images in LR, the camera has a fixed 2.8 aperture, and shutter speeds from what seems to be 1/15 all the way to 1/2000. The ISO range is from 100 to just over 4000.
I love that Camp Snap has listened to it's users and improved the product! Over my usage, I've never gotten an image below f/3.2 (as noted in my video settings), but great to know that they do open up more...wild that I've shot mine at night, indoors, concerts, and it's always been at f/3.2...???
Shooting on Nikon, my kit for concerts is… Nikkor 50mm 1.8 S Nikkor 20mm 1.8 S Tamron 35-150mm 2-2.8 In the past, I shot on Fujifilm and used: XF 18mm f1.4 XF 33mm f1.4 XF 90mm f2
I love prime and really miss shooting with them (I'll have to bring them back out!!). You got a good range and variety!
@ I prefer primes personally, and they suit the venues I shoot in! Obviously not ideal to switch lenses constantly, but I have the opportunity to capture the entire event at most venues I shoot... So I don’t mind taking my time and making a lens switch here and there. That said, the tamron is a freaking work horse of a lens. The only time I take the 50 out now is when the room is very dark or I’m taking an artist portraits
@@sonderbass That's how I feel about my 70-200, it's a workhorse and I can practically use it anywhere. And if I'm too close, I can run farther back as needed. :)
Thanks so much Boston, great tips. I was most interested in your single shot v burst mode comments. Burst mode certainly can increase the chances of getting the perfect moment but it quickly becomes tiresome in post. I do street photography also and there is similar dilemma, to burst or not to burst. I am going to try shooting some concerts with just single shot. I am mostly just shooting local gigs for fun so nothing to lose.
I love hearing this! I would absolutely recommend testing it. If it doesn't work for you, yes, then stick with burst. I completely get wanting to catch that moment, but I find myself focusing more and shooting with intent when I'm on single shot. Also, I feel like I miss focus a lot with burst, so it's even more tedious going through all those images in post and not having most of them even be usable!! Let me know how it goes when you try it!!
@@BostonSchulz Very helpful. Thanks for your kind reply.
my Apperture is 1.7, shutterspeed is 400 to 500 then Auto ISO. Is that alright? I get some good results but I'm wondering if it's right and I also want to improve.
I would recommend going full manual and getting used to how those three play together. If you need more light, you might even want to turn down your shutter speed. In this video, my normal rec for shutter is 1/250 unless your band is SUPER fast.
You can see my full list of "starting" settings here: ua-cam.com/video/YDwxYeHp5uA/v-deo.htmlsi=r-UGV0w1NhjvkL2U&t=1436
If you decide to use Auto ISO, I’d put a cap on the maximum ISO you are willing to accept. Otherwise, you’ll start shooting at ISO 25k in some dark settings which most would find less than ideal. I recommend manual as well, but I personally set my maximum allowed at 6400 ISO if I decide to use Auto
@@BostonSchulz I used to do this but it was a hassle so I was experimenting with Auto ISO and it seems to be better, I started to experiment on this when I saw an post by nikon that you should use Auto ISO when shooting with constant change of light. out of 4 thousands pictures I took one event, there's only 3 pictures with over exposure.
@@sonderbassyes I shoot in manual, only the ISO is set to manual. I do shoot with manual ISO when I was on DSLR and I really find this as a hassle, sometimes I miss some nice moments just by changing the ISO. I tried Auto ISO with my old DSLR before and noticed a lot of pictures were overexposed, but now I am using a mirrorless and noticed the pictures are really decent. After reading your comment I went to investigate on my photos and saw that the highest ISO it shot was 1600, I don't shoot night photography with Auto, I shoot them with Manual so I should monitor my auto ISO again for gigs. I used Auto ISO on 3 gigs already after my initial comment so I'll still keep in mind of your comment regarding with ISO capping. If I notice a frequent really high ISO, I'll set a cap. Thanks on this.
They are so cute, I love the bit of them laying their head on the table hahaha

Your happiness is so infectous
Thank you so much - I appreciate that!!
I love your energy!!!
Thank you!!
campsnap or flashback. saw that flashback have more image quality
That's awesome! Sadly, I can't speak to flashback cameras as I don't own one. But if I get my hands on one, I'll let you know!!
I have both and love my papershoot with the classic film filter card, it gives a dreamlike quality. But the user design drives me crazy -- its impossible to keep the camera board lint free and the shutter sound is obnoxious. And the lack of feedback on the shutter button sucks too.
That's so interesting -- I've never had issues with link in the board, and I own a cat that gets hair on literally everything. But I have noticed that most of these cameras have a shutter sound to signal that the picture has been taken, which I do think is annoying and unnecessary. Hopefully both cameras will make improvements on the button press to actual picture capture while removing the sound.
Thank you! I've been struggling with my band photos lately and I will try your settings in the future. And is that a Shaun Cassidy album in the back?
I hope they work for you! Best of luck!! 📸✨ And it's a Tom Petty vinyl cover!!
How do I get a job for a publication though ?
I have planned to do a new video on this, but I do have other videos on getting started (ua-cam.com/play/PL1Gpgay8wOqkDsxwWkrZLwXd0VOxYS0Kn.html). Joining a publication should be considered like any other job -- find companies you want to work with them and reach out / apply!
I just ordered the camp snap camera 2 days ago. I'm a rock)metal concertphotographer for 20 years now. And i will take the camera to my next show. To switch with my other camera during one song, to see what the camp snap camera will do. 🤘🙂
SO FUN! I hope you love it. It's a fun little camera, but I haven't been able to produce shots I'm happy with at concerts from it. I hope you can!! 📸✨ I'd love to see them once you use it / post them!!
This is exactly the video I needed, thanks so much! Love your glasses too btw.
Thank you for watching and commenting - glad this video helped!!
So glad I came across this video. I'm looking to expand our publication into the music scene and this is really useful information
I'm so happy to hear that! Figuring out how to do this on your own is quite confusing, so I'm so happy to help. Fingers crossed it works out well for you!!! 📸✨
Thanks a lot, Boston. I have to take some pictures tomorrow of an orchestra as a good-willing amateur. 😇 This will help a lot. Greetz from The Netherlands.
I'm so happy to help!! I have my fingers crossed that your shoot went well! Best of luck to you!!!
@@BostonSchulz I’m pretty happy with the results. I used the 85mm lens most of the time and your tips off course 📸
you can get the filters with Camp Snap, but you have to download them.
Oh! I hope I didn't edit that out of the video. Yes, you can download filters (I had mine shooting B&W for a while actually) but when you're at an event, there's no way to switch between filters like you can on Paper Shoot. I'm an indecisive photographer, and choosing what filter to have until the next time I download one is too much of a commitment. 😂
@BostonSchulz shoot, I might have missed that part. So far I do like mine. I have the paper shoot as well. I love the switch for the filter. I just order a couple of cases for mine. Will be doing a review of them soon. FYI, I liked you video
@@DaddisHouse I'll keep an eye out for your review!!! Can't wait!!
@@BostonSchulz :) it will be in the next two weeks thanks
Ohhhh you can get filters for Camp Snap?!?! How's that?
any tips for videographers? anything to say about lens selection?
Since I don't do a lot of video work, I wouldn't want to speak on any recommendation there. But most of my video work that I do is just handheld with my 24 - 70. ✨
Such a useful video thank you so much! I'm just starting out and lucky enough to be shooting some gigs on a tour soon. The venues are pretty small so will be quite close to the singer / band. So you recommend the fixed 50mm? I'm worried fixed won't give me options to change things up. Or do you recommend a smaller mm? I'll be touring with the artist possibly again end of November if all goes well and she'll be supporting a band at much larger venues so would need a second lens perhaps? Sorry for all the questions. Ps love your work :)
Thank you so much for watching & commenting - and your kind words!!! I worked with the 50mm 1.8 for roughly two years before I invested in other lenses. Having a prime forces you to really work on your eye/vision and getting creative with your images. It is definitely more difficult, but I recommend it due to it forces you to learn with a boundary. If you have a crop sensor camera, I actually love the 35 1.8 and that might be a better choice! Both are fairly low cost, so you could potentially get both and it gives you opportunity to switch. Depends on your budget, honestly!!
Can you please compare camp snap and kodak printomatic?
I'll keep this in mind! I'm not buying any new gear for videos - but I'll keep the printomatic in mind if/when I do buy something new!!
Are you comparing to a 16mp papershoot or the newer 18mp one?
Great question! I bought my Papershoot back in 2021. I'm not seeing anything on their site that they upgraded this camera to a larger mp version, but if they have done that across the board, I would assume this is the 16MP then. papershootcamera.com/products/old-classic-black-paper-camera
@@BostonSchulz you can tell on the camera easily by what usb port it has. The 18mp one is type c. I believe every camera is now the newer one.
@@maluslupo754 This is NOT the USB Type C, it's a micro USB, so mine must be the 16mp. I didn't know that they changed it -- so I'll update the description!! Thanks for pointing this out to me.
I must say that your passion truly inspires me, I'm not a professional photographer by any means nor do I want to be, although it's a passion of mine. Your videos make me get up, get out and just shoot and I love that. Thank you for the inspiration to take better photos. So far I've bought two lenses that you use and I may think about getting the Z6, but I don't know if I'm ready for Mirrorless.
Mirrorless is a big shift, but not necessary if you love your current set up! I haven't even made the full switch over yet...but I do still love it. Thank you so much for your kind words, it means a lot to me.
I'm really loving your videos, such fun and informative videos. I look forward to watching more of your videos. I will definitely check out this lens. Is it for full frame or Crop?
Thanks for watching, commenting, and your kind words!! I appreciate it so much!! This lens is a full frame for a DSLR. To be honest with you, I no longer own it. It's a great lens, but I switched to the Z system specifically for the 24 - 70mm f/2.8, so that's now what I own. 📸
Amigo The Devil! 🤘🏻
Yes! 📸✨
Whoa!!! -- It could be a way to get noticed :) -- My opinion, try to be as invisible as possible and dont touch anything!
Yes!! In most photography, we want to blend into the background (like even in weddings). Being invisible is part of our job!!
Hi Boston, such a deadly video! My process is more or less the same. Some great tips. For bigger artists, the Mags I shoot for the comission editor requests the photo pass and this request goes direct to the promoter of the event or a press agent for the promoter of the event. Then, for smaller gigs I would would request my pass. You make a great point about including your editor in your email. Taking all your tips one step further is that the music industry is like a family, and you get known, and media contacts get to know you. You keep bumping into the same people again. So it's very important to be respectful at all times in getting your pass. Great video!
Hey Trevor!! Thanks for watching!! I feel like every publication I work with has different rules. Some are super small pubs and want to be the ones directly in contact and some want the photographers to reach out on their own. Right now, all of my "big" shows for my "big" publication - I do the requesting, funny enough. I LOVE your note about being respectful. 100%!! It's surprising how small the industry is, and how often I send requests to the same people or teams for different artists. Being respectful at all times is incredibly important to your career and how far you'll go in the industry, for sure. 📸✨
great video, thanks so much! just getting started with concert photography so this is helpful!
I'm so happy to hear that! I know it can be overwhelming to get starting in the industry, so I'm glad I can help!! ✨📸
Considering that I forgot all about the eclipse, we’re all socked in SF Bay Area.🤨
I forgot about it too! 😂✨ We got very lucky with a clear night here in LA. Hopefully you'll be able to catch the next one!!
And please 🙏 NEVER harass media / press contacts. If they tell you no, you're not approved...move on. If they ignore you....move on. Keep working on your portfolio, content and connections, and I have my fingers crossed for you the next time the band comes to your town!!
Hi From Australia 🇦🇺
extremely handy! thanks for sharing those tips!
Awesome!! So happy this is helpful for you!!
Spot on! Kudos! I love how you show the work behind the photo work. Most people don't realize taking photos is just one aspect of the job. A lot of this applies to shooting runway and your spot on the riser, but I let you tell that story on your next video :)
Oh my gosh, runway -- always so fun to shoot and prep for. 😅 I've gotten so many questions about keeping my "calendar full" with shoots, and this is my process. I think you're 100% right that people don't realize that there is so much research & time spent just doing general stuff on the computer to make a "photography business" run. As always, thanks for watching!! :)
Great info, thank you so much! 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Thanks for watching & commenting! Glad it helps!! ✨📸
Hi lady i wish to buy a camcorder for local concerts here in Puerto Rico can you help me what to buy??
If you're looking for an easy camera to have for photo & video, I would look into the Sony RX100 cameras. I own one and it's great that I can bring it into any venue (most venues that say "no cameras" do allow this as it's a "point and shoot"). But it also takes RAW photos and the video & sound from it has been impressive for what it is. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1496248-REG/sony_dscrx100m7_b_cyber_shot_dsc_rx100_vii_digital.html
