The superbowl is a usa thing and just a usa thing but Eurovision is worldwide....Europe, Australia, South Africa, South America and even Asia
Btw Sweden and Switzerland are not the same place and the "small country" in the middle of Romania is Romania I believe it is just a map of languages and the other "small country" to the east of Romania is in Moldova which speaks Romanian and Russian I believe. Also i believe F.Y.R Macedonia stands for Former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia (if I am wrong anyone feel free to correct me)>
Hi, I am romanian, that small portion is populated by mostly hungarians and ukrainians, I passed that place years ago, there are hungarian schools and shops etc. and yes it's still Romania.

This Place in the middle of Romania is also called Siebenbürgen, a area where german speaking people came centuries ago and mixed their culture and Language with other people. Today most of them speak this language

FYR stands for former Yugoslawian Republic. They since then renamed themselves to North Macedonia
The "small countries" werent countries, that was map of (most)languages spoken in Europe and those were small pockets inside a country where another language was spoken.
When he said "most of the time" he showed 4 pictures of 4 performances which had a big sipport from the Eurovision fans before the contest but didn't make it to the Grand Finale.
The Iron Curtain was a deadly, almost impassable border that divided Western European countries and Eastern European countries in 2 halves (the Berlin Wall was also part of the Iron Curtain). Europe was divided into 2 parts for almost 50 years. This division arose when the Soviet Union (Russia's communist empire, founded in 1917/1922) brought its tanks to Berlin in World War II to defeat Nazi Germany. On the way to Berlin, the Soviet Union annexed + occupied the Eastern European countries and introduced "Soviet Communism" in the countries. In addition, in 1939, shortly before the start of World War II, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union had agreed in the Hitler-Stalin Pact to divide Eastern Europe between themselves. While 🇪🇪 Estonia, 🇱🇻 Latvia, 🇱🇹 Lithuania and 🇲🇩 Moldova were annexed by the Soviet Union and incorporated as Soviet provinces into the Soviet Empire, Czechoslovakia, 🇵🇱 Poland, 🇧🇬 Bulgaria, 🇷🇴 Romania, 🇭🇺 Hungary and the German Democratic Republic (GDR/East Germany) became communist doll states of the Soviet Union (called Warsaw Pact). 🇺🇦 Ukraine, 🇧🇾 Belarus, 🇬🇪 Georgia, 🇦🇲 Armenia, 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan and the Central Asian countries (🇰🇿 Kazakhstan, 🇰🇬 Kyrgyzstan, 🇹🇯 Tajikistan, 🇺🇿 Uzbekistan, 🇹🇲 Turkmenistan) have already been 1917 - 1920 (approx.) annexed by the Soviet Union. At the end of the 1980s, the Soviet Union fall apart + the communist puppet dictatorships were overthrown in the other Eastern European countries. Furthermore, there were two other communist/socialist states, the also communist 🇦🇱 Albania and Yugoslavia, which were not doll states of the Soviet Union. Yugoslavia was founded as a socialist state by Josip Broz Tito at the end of WW2 after he and his partisans liberated the entire territory of Yugoslavia (Yugoslavia was a kingdom before WW2) from the Nazi occupiers in a guerrilla war. Tito became the leader/dictator of the state and broke ties with the Soviet Union in the 1950s, establishing Titoism, a particular path between capitalism and socialism. Tito was probably one of the most popular dictators in history, who held together the many different ethnic groups within Yugoslavia with his steel strength alone. Tito finally died in 1980 and 10 years later Yugoslavia was engulfed in a series of bloody civil wars in which all ethnic groups fought for independence, eventually breaking Yugoslavia apart. Furthermore, Czechoslovakia split into 🇨🇿 Czech Republic and 🇸🇰 Slovakia. 24 new countries emerged from the collapse of the Eastern Bloc (Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia): 🇪🇪 Estonia, 🇱🇻 Latvia, 🇱🇹 Lithuania, 🇧🇾(⬜🟥⬜) Belarus, 🇺🇦 Ukraine, 🇲🇩 Moldova, 🇬🇪 Georgia 🇦🇲 Armenia, 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan, 🇰🇿 Kazakhstan, 🇺🇿 Uzbekistan, 🇹🇯 Tajikistan, 🇰🇬 Kyrgyzstan, 🇹🇲 Turkmenistan, 🇸🇮 Slovenia, 🇭🇷 Croatia, 🇧🇦 Bosnia and Herzegovina, 🇷🇸 Serbia, 🇲🇪 Montenegro, 🇲🇰 North Macedonia (Macedonia), 🇽🇰 Kosovo, 🇨🇿 Czech Republic, 🇸🇰 Slovakia and 🇷🇺 Russia. Also, 🇵🇱 Poland, Czechoslovakia (🇨🇿 Czech Republic, 🇸🇰 Slovakia), 🇭🇺 Hungary, 🇧🇬 Bulgaria, 🇷🇴 Romania and 🇦🇱 Albania became democratic states again + West Germany and East Germany were reunited to form 🇩🇪 Germany. Today there are only 2 dictatorships left in Europe, namely 🇧🇾 Belarus (dictator Aleksander Lukashenko) and 🇷🇺 Russia (dictator Vladimir Putin). 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan, 🇰🇿 Kazakhstan, 🇺🇿 Uzbekistan, 🇹🇯 Tajikistan and 🇹🇲 Turkmenistan are also dictatorships, while 🇰🇬 Kyrgyzstan, 🇬🇪 Georgia and 🇦🇲 Armenia are democracies. 🇭🇺 Hungary and 🇷🇸 Serbia are half-democratic/half-autocratic.

It's changing with languages both the 2021 and 2022 winners were in non English native languages in 2021 most of the top 5 weren't in English.

Getting a zero isn't that difficult though.
To get any votes someone must think that song is the best. A song that nobody places as #1 will get nothing, even if everybody wants it in 2nd place.
Italy was in the first Eurovision but in the 90s Italians didn't care that much about it so Italy left and came back as one of the Big 5 in 2011.
@thatamericangirl - the map was one of languages and as you might know the EU countries are somewhat mixed in languages - the spot in Romania is a minority group called "secui" who speak Hungarian - on the map the color of them is the same as for Hu. The other one next to Romania might show the "gagauzi" which are also a minority group, but inside Moldova. They speak their own language that is a turkic language. There are even more examples of people speaking a language, but yet not being represented by a state or country ex: the Roma people.
I am Spanish and we mostly sing in Spanish at the festival but the market determines that we have to have an English chorus or a Weird Lala chorus people can follow. Because if not public won't vote for you.

I think the block in the us is because one broadcaster bought the rights to show esc in the us so don’t think it’s the EBU’s fault.
I like having different languages and cultures in esc, but knowing many go after which songs they understand, so English using countries get an unfair advantage.
The Norwegian participant last year (TIX) usually sing in Norwegian, and I think you’d like a lot of his songs, but he chose English so everyone would see the meaning.

The system change in 2016 was not as big as it might seem. You had both juries and public votes before too, but up until that point you combined them so each country had only one set of points not two. The most known records with the old system was probably most 12 points (or most countries first place) Euphoria by Loreen from Sweden 🇸🇪 and most points Fairytale by Alexander Rybak from Norway 🇳🇴 though we also hold the record for most last places. 😅

FYR Macedonia was the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia called this after the breakup of Yugoslavia but the name/region of Macedonia is disputed with greece so in 2019 had a vote to change the country's name and was won so it is now North Macedonia.
The eurovision is exactly the same as the electoral college, but we decide the vote on the night so the winner gets to run Europe from that night, there is no 3 months being run by the last guy which allows for all the law suits.

I understand you like when countries are singing in their native language, but we would like to win. And singing in swedish (I’m from Sweden) most likely won’t allow you to do that. In the olden days they had rules for language usage and the countries that sang in english and french won way more than the others.
The problem is that English is nowadays a "lingua franca" i. e. an international language and in some way it is melodic (it can be well interwoven with tones thus making a nice sound). On the other hand English became a snobbish thing so many artists from non-English speaking countries use it to achieve fame. Unfortunately it's just the case of Sweden as their singers use only English to compose and sing songs as if Swedish weren't exist. As a Pole I'm proud that in my country there're plenty of Polish songs in the Polish language and they're quite good. It's a pity that they are almost not known outside Poland. Not only Sweden but most countries don't have songs in their languages. So Poland is an exception.
If every country would sing in their national languages, Belgium should sing in three different languages as we have three national languages ( Dutch/Flemish, French and German ) I think it would make it worse in our case 😅
4:40 the problem is with more countries and the televote and all that showbiz you kinda have to sing in English in order to garner the attention of many as many countries speak english which gives a preference if you can actually sing the song along
3:07 the reason why that song got disqualified is because the singer sang in Crimea I believe. The singer is a beautiful soul, super kind. But of course the contest that year was held in Ukraine

The thing with The jurys is countries tend to vote their neighbours. Jury votibg is supposed to Even That out a bit.
Normally the semi finale works well. In some years songs that were considered likely to win or at least reach the top 10 fail to qualify.
If the native languages are used, then there is less chance of winning because most popular music is sung in English. Songs with both often do very well.
I'd like to think that if its a good song, it could win, but there have been winners that have been awful!

We mostly, take it less seriously than a lot of other countries and will be hosting next year on Ukraine's behalf.

The problem with the languages was, that the nordic (Sweden, Denmark, Finnland..), the slawic (Russia, Lettland, Tshech, Hungary, Slowenia...., the german (germany, austria, Switzerland, Dutch..) don`t sound good in the ears of the other "groups"!, so the winner were most countries with the "music"languages like english, italian, spanish, french! And the countries with similar languages gave her points each other!
If you want to here the different languages watch one of the earlier song contests. On youtube you can find the WHOLE Songcontest from EVERY year since beginning!!! And you can also see the Voting!!!!
