About the flags, most of the Europeans cant recognize all state flags, but the point is that its one and only USA that they can recognize, its the same question for you? Can you recognize all state flags in Germany ?!
I mean not even 50% of the people in any country would know all their state/region flags/crests. Knowing about national flags is a lot more important, you don't have to know every country but at least 60% of the 193 UN recognized ones.

UK and Ireland were successful as long as they were the only ones to sing in English. When the rules changed and others were allowed to sing in it too, both were starting to place very poorly. Therefore, it was more the language than the music in 90s.
A lot of European countries have more than 1 native languages. For instance.. France has French, Bretonese, Occitan, Corsican and Alsacian. Sweden.. Has Swedish, Finnish, Meänkieli, Saami, Elfdalian, Gutnish and Romanes speakers. Even the UK has many different languages. English, Scots, Welsh, Gáidhlig, Manx, Cornish, Ulster Irish....So sometimes it is just easier to send it in one of the most common language of Europe (Either English, French, German or Russian) Most europeans have some sort of schooling in English. Therefor English becomes popular.
The viking boat thing ( when ireland won in 1992 ) was held in Sweden, which explains the viking boat with our viking heritage. When a country wins ESC, the next ESC Will be held in that Winners country and so on so forth
The video shows the winner with the flag in the heart, where it was hosted (city and country) and the runner up to the right, though the Norwegian runner up in 1996 actually sounded a lot like the Irish winner although it was in Norwegian. It was while you had to sing in the national language of the country you represented

It will be hosted in Liverpool, england because United Kingdom came 2nd last year. The debate wasn't between uk and germany it was between Liverpool (England) and Glasgow (Scotland) but Liverpool was decided a few weeks ago.
The backing vocalists probably aren't matching with their style, because Italy used the host nation, Yugoslavia's (Croatia) local backing vocalists. Had they'd been italian they probably would have rehearsed this back home and matched their style.
