Some of those "troll" entries are actually iconic by now. Well he is not completely wrong. Some countries would send troll entries to avoid winning but sometimes would end up on a good place.
These days though Eurovision is seen a bit more serious from the artists standpoint. Still here and there you will find fun and funny songs. Some artists became very huge after winning ESC...ABBA for example won in 1974, Maneskin won in 2021 and are now global.
There are many bangers though and I guess you would like it.
Also there are great compilation videos like all the winners, all runner ups or all last places.

Eurovision is such a unique, fun thing that celebrates different cultures, languages and obviously music. It's a massive party.
The attitudes towards it have changed in some countries recently, as Eurovision has launched the careers of artists such as Måneskin, Sam Ryder and Rosalinn. The troll entries are not as prevalent as they used to be and overall the quality of songs is getting higher and higher.
Definitely worth checking out with an open mind! 😊

@@evawettergren7492 haha you're right, and in a way I miss them too. They were definitely one of the defining features of Eurovision for that 2000s era, which was when I was introduced to the contest.
Then again, I love how this new wave of Eurovision embraces different languages and genres. In the 2000s it used to be mostly just pop songs and power ballads, 90% of them in English... Now we get all sorts of (more interesting, IMO) stuff!

It is a shame that there are fewer troll entries now, but there are still some. I'm going to get hate for this I'm sure, but people watching Croatia this year without context will think it's a troll entry; and I think people would say the same about Finland and Austria this year if those songs weren't so amazing.
Part of the problem is that the "trolls" are now using really fantastic songs - I think in a previous decade people would have thought that Iceland 2020 "Think About Things", Lithuania 2021 "Discoteque", Norway 2022 "Give That Wolf A Banana", and so on were "troll" entries, but all of them placed really high because the songs were actually excellent.

Also, that video is not bad, but the notion about Eurovision is quite dated, - even for the time it was made. Most of these clips are joke entries from the 2000’s, a decade infamous for being an all-time low for the contest, so it’s not very reflective of the contest nowadays nor during the time the video was made.

A few incorrect statements in the video. Eurovision is not the world's oldest singing competition, it is based off of the Festival di Saremo in Italy, which has reached its 73rd edition in February 2023 and is 10 years older. The big 5 actually have tried to send their best artists in the past few years, they're not afraid to win, Italy has in fact won in 2021 with the band Maneskin. About the politics involved, in 2022 Russia was not allowed in the competition, and Ukraine collected 12 points, the maximum allowed, from the televote of almost each competing country, thus winning the contest. In this year's edition, the two semifinals will take place on May 9th and 11th, the grand final will be on May 13th. The contest will be held in Liverpool, since Ukraine could not host it for obvious reasons, and the UK placed second in 2022. I hope I've been helpful.

The Eurovision Song Contest (French: Concours Eurovision de la chanson), sometimes abbreviated to ESC and often known simply as Eurovision, is an *international songwriting competition* (keep that in your mind* because its not just about the singing/voice!* (like Americans always assume) instead its about the Songwriting, the staging, the the voice, the Outfit, the performance and the likability of the contestants together as the whole stage Performance, judged by largest live tv audience (183 million in 2021) of the entire world (the super bowl 2021 has only 111 million) annuallyorganized by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), wich is also the reason why countries like Marokko, Israel, Australia and Turkey have participated in Eurovision but being not in Europe
Every Active members of the EBU, as well as invited associate members, are eligible to compete, and as of 2021, 52 countries have participated at least once.
(To be clear „Eurovision“ is not the full name of the competition and and does not mean that the contest has to be focused only on Europe.
The word „Eurovision“ (a short version of the French Original name „Concours Eurovision de la chanson“ or nowadays just „Eurovision Song Contest“) is just the name of the original swiss tv Channel „Eurovision“ wich originally have broadcastet the competition (if US-America had started this the name could be „MSN/NBC’s Song Contest“ or something like that)

      - The ESC
      - Big TV game shows (especially in the german-speaking area (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) like the former shows "Einer wird gewinnen" or "Wetten Dass..?" or the international show "Spiel ohne Grenzen"/"Jeux sans frontières"/"Games without borders"

To give a sort of flavour of modern Eurovision:
The more 'unusual' performances: Norway 2022, Poland 2014 (you'll thank us later), Russia 2012 was the one with the grandmothers, Ukraine 2007 (the very first one you saw), Greece 2014 (you'll find out why at the end), Iceland 2021 (I think it was 2021 anyway, the one with Hatari). Plus I have to give a special mention to Jedward, aka Ireland's entry in 2012 and 2013, probably their best placing in the last 10 years.
San Marino 2021 features your own Flo Rida
Moldova 2010 and 2017 feature Epic Sax Guy
Add in Norway 2019, Italy 2019 and Italy 2015 for some fan favourites that didn't win. Israel 2016 (may have been 2015, the year 'Golden Boy' was selected) is a classic just for the last few lines of the song.
And for a good mix of songs from the last few years: 2022 - France, Moldova, Spain, UK, Finland, Lithuania, Serbia (not my favourite but it was popular); 2021 - Italy, Finland (again), France (again), Ukraine, Norway; 2020 aka the Eurovision that never was - Iceland, North Macedonia, Germany, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Albania
But if you really want to know what Eurovision is all about, watch the halftime performance from the 2016 contest of 'Love Love Peace Peace' by Petra Mede and Mans Zelmerlow (Mans won the 2015 contest and has been popping up on UK TV every now and again ever since), that pretty much explains everything in less than 3 minutes.

Hey! This video is from 2018 but it's mostly reflecting the 2000s Eurovision era. Eurovision today is much different honestly, it has evolved. It's a high quality tv show with mostly competitive entries, little to no troll entries by year and it's taken much more seriously.
It has also become a platform for artists' career boost (or at least one hit wonders) even in the USA - Maneskin, Duncan Laurence (song Arcade), Rosa Lin (song Snap)

You could watch the winners of Eurovision from start to now, a compilation.
It's the biggest musical competition in the world. This video deals with the funny aspects of it, but it's actually incredibly well done, quality entries, stagings, costumes, songs and fantastic performers. It's a whole thing that comprises of many national selections (a national selection is an event where countries will select their representative, and the fandom watches those, too), then some countries will choose internally (without a national selection), it goes on from December all the way to March, then the pre-parties where the selected representatives will perform, stage reveals, rehearsals, it's massive.

Eurovision gets a lot of hate over here in the UK, criticisms like; the music is shit, its cheesy etc. But you know what, I've changed my opinion a lot over the past few years. Some of the tunes are legitimately good and lot of fun and way better than some of the dross they play on main stream radio these days (looking at you Lewis Capaldi)

Just realise that the best piece of music
    is the opening piece
    Charpentier's Prelude to Te Deum
A bit of French Baroque music
    historically used to allow synchronisation
when that was a key part of getting
    all the different television networks
    which used different encoding systems
to work together for live broadcasts.
I watch it every year here in Germany
    it is for me hilarious
and I get a printed "scoresheet"
and aim to write my responses to each song
    during its three minutes.
    This year for example
    My comment on Italy was
    "oh look at the trampolining"
They had two folks in the very far back
doing trampolining dancing in the background
It was useless as an effect
    but it was there LOL

After Lordi won for Finland in 2006 I was hooked, and now they’re one of my favourite bands. Pretty much all their album titles are horror puns and their music is just fun horror based hard rock. Nothing too complicated, just fun.
I’m sure people have already said, but Eurovision takes place in May every year. This year it’s on the 13th, taking place a couple of miles down the road from me in the centre of Liverpool, being held on behalf of Ukraine, who won it last year. As we finished second, we’re hosting it given what’s going on at the moment. The BBC shows it in the UK and I’m pretty sure it’s aired in the US too, but I’m not sure where.
I’m in Florida myself at the moment, enjoying a couple of weeks away. Hopefully these storms aren’t affecting you too much. Orlando has missed the worst of it so far.

The one aspect not said here, but is essential to know and the reason why you can't just make a (good) Eurovision copy in the US, is that it's effectively TV channels from different countries competing. Hence the euroVISION part. Every National TV channel selects there candidate, either internally or with a national selection competition to compete for their country. Also to note, it's not a talent show, countries can sent whoever they want, so often the candidate is already famous in the country or even famous internationally.

In 2007 Verka Serduchka, a Ukrainian drag queen took 2nd place with a campy song called Lasha Tumbai. At the time the undertones were that the lyrics sounded a lot like Russia Goodbye. In light of recent events it’s no longer an undertone but an anthem for Ukraine. Verka performs the song among others throughout the world including benefits in Ukrainian subway stations.

Let's give some clarifications. The competition was born taking inspiration from the Sanremo Festival (event of 6 years more). The idea of EuroVision came from an Italian journalist and with the help of the director of the EBU (today the same institution is called EBU) of French origin. It was originally supposed to take place in Italy but RAI, Italy's public television network, didn't quite believe in the project. The principality of Monaco was thought of but the costs would have been too high.
It was decided that the first country to host the event was in Lugano in Switzerland where the official language was Italian.
Informally the contest was known as the "Eurovision Song Contest" and the main focus of the contest was on the musical aspect.
In recent years the competition has been called Eurovision Song Contest or ESC precisely to underline the importance not only of singing and music but also of entertainment. Sometimes the quality of the music also wins, other times more fun.
There are exchange votes between culturally close countries but for reasons of cultural rather than political proximity.
Italy won 3 times and not 2.
Last information. There is no first prize. Competitors participate in the competition to make themselves known even outside their own national audience.
ESC is the best but also the best of Trash. Once you start watching it you won't stop :-)

The most ridiculous entry this year is Let 3 from Croatia. The competition is this coming week - first semifinal on Tuesday, second semi on Thursday, final on Saturday. The last couple of years it has streamed on Peacock in the US.
The three bookies' favorites to win this year are Sweden, Finland and France. They are very different songs. Finland is the most bonkers, but I listen to it over and over and I don't speak Finnish.

As a European watching Eurovision my whole life, I have to say something - Everyone wants to win Eurovision and hosting the contest is not really expensive, considering that at least 200 million people will watch your country. It's advertisement above all. Hosting the contest cost between 10 and 30 million euro - the country decides how much. The Big 5 wants to win too - Italy won recently, Germany is investing 1 M euros in Eurovision and France is sending really good songs. And if it wasn't about the war, UK would have won, instead of Ukraine (this is the actual political part of the show, not the countries that are voting for their neighbors).

Oh and the suspence every year of the voting is real, cos they 50/50 voting is first juries, then televoting, so someone who are at the top after the juries has been up - could happen to get no televotes and vice versa, so you cant really know who is gonna win after the first half of voting =)

I'm Romanian so i think i can share this with confidence. One thing that America will not understand EVER about Eurovision is that, this song contest is to feel good, make a show ,enjoy and celebrate yourself as a country/culture and other countries and a way to land support to a country that maybe didn't have a good year and hey if we happened to win fine that is great and if we don't that is fine too we had a blast at least. I feel that America would take this to seriously and just want to win.
Don't understand me wrong Eurovision its not a silly contest it means so much for us Europeans it brings us closer as a continent through music but the wholesomeness of the ''we are here to vibe' and vibe only" even if that means we make a fool out of ourselves sometimes is what makes it ten times better and is something that America (USA) doesn't posses because you want to be the worlds best and that does not apply here because is not only about that.

Since I was first introduced to Eurovision as a Irish child in the 80s Ive always loved it. I’ve also written a song too for it but have yet to enter it. Ireland (my country) up until 2023 have not only won it 7 times, the most, but have also won it 3 times in a row in the 90s. Sweden in modern times are the best at churning out winners, respect to them. They take it seriously and respect the premise of the contest in and of itself, that being one of creating, producing and performing a brilliant song. Think it’s time Ireland up its game again. Also the world was introduced to Riverdance, a show that has grossed over a billion dollars worldwide. You should do a reaction to Riverdance. I would love to see King and Queen Boomer react to that. It’s heartwarming, touching amazing, beautiful......I could go on. Love you guys, keep up the good work
