    Born and raised in Corvallis, and I can remember when Camp Adair was training the troops.
    Many of them were hauled in, and hauled out again, by passenger coaches to Wellsdale.
    Glad to see the West Side Line is still robust and active. Suver was the northern limit of my
    Gazette-Times motor delivery route, 1957-58, which took in Lewisburg and Adair Village

    Once again, I have to say what memories! I was a locomotive engineer for Southern pacific back in the day and worked The westsider off and on as my seniority allowed! When I first started with cider, was operating on training orders! I’ll never forget running on the 20 mile an hour track in the snow and the peaceful, beautiful scenery and the quiet serenity of slowly mandarins Through the valley slowly!

      Sounds like you were an extra board guy! I love that era and wish I had lived in it longer. I’m just grateful that the old espee branches are still hosting regular trains like this! I am bummed that the Dawson branch and tillamook have gone.

      @@pacificrailproductions5281 thank you so much for the reply! Yes, I was an extra board guy! Also work the westsider as a regular run, when I was a fireman! Like you, I am really bummed Tillamook branch is closed! What an incredible run! Took empty, chip cars over and loaded chip car is back! Quite a challenging run especially in snowy weather! I was told it was the steepest grade Railroad in the western United States! Coming down the hill, you could see your caboose over your head! Break into’s just from wheel slips, going up the hill! Having to use retainers coming down! I remember one engineer depleted the airway, setting up and releasing and had a runaway coming down the hill! Fortunate to live through it! Also Herds of elk along the track and stunning Mountain scenery! Sorry I get carried away. Great memories.

      @@williamcochell9889 absolutely ok! I love hearing the stories from the guys running back in SP days! I was just in Tillamook yesterday and last weekend at a rental in Oceanside. I saw the Hampton mill and lamented the end of service. That was my favorite branch line too. I have a friend modeling it in HO. It’s terrific!

    Monstrous = good for business. I love this line; most Oregon railroads are just fascinating. I sure wish the Tillamook Branch hadn't bit the dust.
    Why are the speed restrictions so heavy? That trackage looks like it's in pretty decent shape.

      I was very glad to see a train this heavy for sure. The track does look good, and seems like it could handle higher speeds, but the RR has learned that the slower speeds in general, though they make for longer days for the crew, generate less derailments, and less destruction when they do leave the rails. Just look at the Toledo Hauler derailment last week on the one section of 25 mph track. It made a pretty good mess. They’ve still got a few higher speed sections on the Westside line.     1:09 I live in Adair Village and I see the train head by almost everyday. One summer, when I was 16, me and my friends hopped on it and rode it up to Yamhill, we hopped off at a bridge to swim in the river

      Yeah, we hung around Yamhill until around 9 o'clock before we started heading back. We walked on the train tracks for about three hours and we heard the train horn so we decided to hop on again and ride it back to Adair. Except it was the night load so all of the centerbeam cars we full of lumber so it was a bit difficult but we managed to hop on a car that was only half-loaded :)

    So seeing this is a short line railroad, can't they apply for rehabilitation grants so they can increase the speed on the line? With the heavier rail, new ties and some roadbed work could probably do wonders to increase the speed and eliminate derailments.

      It is a regional carrier, but it is owned by Genessee & Wyoming which is a very big corporation. I don’t think I can really speak to the financial workings behind the upkeep. But I do know that it would probably be a big investment-low reward situation. The train volumes are low being 1-2 a day; so raising the track speeds would likely not create an influx of traffic, but only move current traffic quicker. Also, the RR is still at the mercy of UP to interchange with. It can be a headache to negotiate car volume increases. As far as derailments, that would be the best argument for track rehabilitation, but the slow speeds keep this from being a real problem. It’s definitely the higher speed sections of track that need to be better maintained, since these parts see more derailments.

    ~7000ft wow thats long for a local
    Classic G&W why spend money on upgrading or even painting engines or rebuilding track. 10mph is fine

      Yeah, they haven’t upgraded much in since 93. Track speeds only going down everywhere. Makes for a leisurely chase…but the crews must wish they could accelerate
