  • Portland & Western's Toledo Branch trains battle a stiff 2.58% grade to the summit of Oregon's Coast Range. The railroad's weapons of choice are 4 axle EMDs. This video takes you into the backwoods of western Oregon where the battle of horsepower vs gravity plays out nearly every day.
This is an excerpt from "Portland and Western's Toledo Branch Part 1" available on DVD, HD Blu-ray and Vimeo on Demand. To order, visit 7ideaproductions.com www.7ideaproductions.com/prod...

Very cool, I've grown up along this route. For a long time, it was one of the only trains that I'd experienced in person, and I kinda thought that this was the normal speed for all trains. 😄

I went to OSU and had a dorm room right next to the tracks. Really miss living there and took seeing the haulers every day for granted. I always was curious what the full trip looked like. Thank you for this amazing production!

Fifty years ago, I had a dorm room on the top floor of Weatherford tower with a view of the tracks and Marys Peak. I marveled at the trains I saw then and thirty years later, I went to work for the railroad and ran over that line. It is a good run, even at 10 mph that P&W is now running it at.

That's pretty cool that you got to do that. It was the line that got me interested in railroading back in the 1970's. Sure miss the SP but it's nice to see the line is still in use.

Like a couple other guys who replied here, I was an OSU student (OSC originally!) and lived in Cawthorne Hall facing the tracks that passed the campus. I remember seeing many SP trains heading toward Albany. Funny - I don't recall any heading toward the coast!

The idea for building this railroad was that to end a transcontinental railroad on the Oregon coast would be better than ending it at Portland, Oregon.
