If the Confederacy needs to move troops from VA to TX the shortest safe route is a straight line. The same thing happens with Pakistan in the 1971 civil war where India intervenes. Pakistan is fighting to hold onto Bangladesh but can't get to the east directly. It has to ship troops all the way around India to reach Bangladesh. By contrast, India can easily move troops from the Pakistani (western) to Bangladeshi (eastern) front. As a result, Indian troops can swap between fronts much faster than Pakistani troops can.
