Hello Bernd Kaussler. I'm working on a project in regards to foreign policy, where I'm discussing the US and Iran and how President Obama and President Trump has dealt with a that they deem dangerous to the international community, by limiting their accessibility of nuclear weaponry. I was wondering how would you view Donald Trump as somebody who uses the defensiv realism sort of mindset, in how he opts out of the Iranian nuclear deal and strikes even harder with further economic sanctions? Long question, I know, but then again it's for a pretty big project. Thank you in advance :)
Hi Amin, thanks for your message. I would not characterize Trump's as being guided by defensive realist mindset. I am not sure there is much of a strategy beyond a form of isolationism and abandonment of multilateral obligations. Leaving the nuclear deal was more an act of diplomatic self-sabotage than brining about any real leverage for the US. In fact, reaching the deal under Obama was more in line with defensive realism as it created an arrangement that limited what the Iranian government was doing with regards to enrichment and, therefore, prolonged the 'break-out window" but it also made the US live up to fulfilling its own confidence building measures. It was a two-way street and a sort of Entente between both states. In the absence of bilateral relations, it reduced uncertainty about each others' intentions. I view his decision to sabotage the deal largely motivated by his desire to undo something that Obama had accomplished.
Great explanation sir. I have a question however. 9/11 marks the end of US unipolar throughout the 90s. Does that also counts as the risk of maximizing power, just like the argument of defensive realist?
